Golf Books

Mindy Blake was the clearest thinker and innovator in golf, but his ideas never penetrated the golfing society. I bought his last book two years ago from Amazon Books, and today I hit the balls straight and long in what could be considered a most unconventional way.

I find this book very funny, whitty and insightful. As a hacker I found many of the stories and examples to be right on. I would suggest this book to any one who has every picked up a club! I could not put it down...

We are a nation of self-improvement junkies: just look at the trade paperback best sellers lists. And most books promise much more than they can deliver. This modest little spiral-bound book is really more like a well-illustrated cookbook however, and delivers to golfers more than most books. For each of the main strokes in golf (putting, chipping/pitching, full swing), there are several series of photographs of perfect strokes taken from the front, side and above: careful study and subsequent emulation (maybe with a friend to help) will indeed improve your game. There are also helpful sections on stretching and appropriate weight training.

I have attended many Golf Schools and found them useful for the physical part of the game, but nothing really addressed the insecure thoughts that ran through my head as I placed the tee in the ground. This book does and I would recommend it to anyone who who ever said to themselves. " what do I do now?" " Ya but, how am I going to get over the water hole? How am I going to keep the ball from landing in the sand trap? Now I just reach in my bag and see what my personal mental thought coach has to say.

If you have one or more non-golfers in the family, it's important to plan your golf vacation for where there are things for the others to do while you're on the course. Our family had been planning a Myrtle Beach vacation and had found lots of "general" info on the web, but this book speaks directly to golfers with non-golfers in the group, so it was tremendously helpful to us. We're already planning a trip to Florida for next summer, based on this book's recommendations. It might be time for an update, though...we found Myrtle Beach has added a number of family-type attractions as well as some first-class courses since this book was published.

Bruce Janke is a devotee of golf instruction manuals and golf videos and has done all of us a great service by incorporating in his text all the lessons he found useful while ignoring those that seem better suited to the professional. Read and absorb the instructions in his book and you'll play better, guaranteed, and he doesn't expect you to practice, practice like so many other books do. It's as if you had a playing partner offering tips on occasion. A stroke or two per nine add up to perhaps your best round ever.

Brian McCallen has given us all a new set of golf destinations to put on our "lists." Rather than send us off to the usual places, we can look foward to visits to New Zealand, PEI, and the "other Ireland."

Anyone can write about what everyone has seen. It takes a special writer to entice you to new places. Brian has done a great job. Nice pics, too.

The ongoing debate about golf's greatest performers should make its way into a book such as this, and "Golf's Greatest 18" is a great title. I even liked the mini-bios of the players, including some stories that I haven't heard before, such as when Trevino hustled Seve during an exhibition in Europe. And I agree with most of the selections here. Except.....leaving out Harry Vardon, and putting in Greg Norman just shows the bias of these writers toward the modern game. Vardon was THE dominant player of the beginning of the 20th century, and Norman, while he certainly had the potential to be included here (as did Tom Weiscopf and Johnny Miller), was a flawed player. End of story.
