If you play the game of golf, you will be able to relate to the characters in this book.
Mr. Montclair is able to take you out on the course though the eyes of a young caddy, and writes in such a way that you feel you are there.
Some of the golfers he describes he is cadding for you will be able to see yourself, your golfing buddies or a golfer you have been paired with to complete a foursome.
The tales he tells of the frolics of these caddies is priceless.
If you know someone who loves the game of golf, this is a book for them. In fact if you are with someone who loves the game of golf, this is a book for you as well as it will help you understand what draws a golfer to this game.

An essential guidebook for the recreational golfer!

IM a newcomer to the world of golf and this book has made the road that much easier! Everything is covered from pre-swing routine to some general info on troublesome lies! This is not just raw info but it also provides you with info on how to practice! This book will work wonders for 100% of recreational golfers! The book is great but it must be coupled with instruction to reap the full benefits! IM fortunate in this aspect as my instructor is James Callahan who was the PGA technical advisor for this book!

A book for the serious golf lover
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.

This is not a book with lots of pictures; it is not a book with the stories of great golf matches. This book is an excellent study of American country clubs and golf in this country--about how they began and how they have evolved. It is perfect for serious golfers, for those who really want to understand what country clubs are and have been about and how they relate to the game they love.

Although much of the information covered here is available in the more easily found Spirit of St Andrews, this original work is far more profound in the impact it has on the reader.

Inside is an overview of Mackenzie's views on golf architecture, mostly drawing on his experience while in the UK. It was after this book was published that he found his way to the Americas and left a lasting mark on the profession.

By reading and rereading this book, much of what was upheld by the classic architects not only becomes clearer, but it also shows us quickly how course construction has strayed from its early ideals.

The renewed interest in golf architecture, and Mackenzie in particular, will hopefully spawn a new age of course construction. This book, one of the best of its kind, should be read by the student in whatever edition he can find.

This brilliant addition to your golf bag is a must! It's a good reference that explains the rules in a language that everyone can understand. Plus, it talks about many of the different betting games in golf. Witty and well-written! Well worth the money.

I thought this was a great book. A great mix of anecdotes, history, and psychology. Golf is about 'feel', and he captures that feeling in this book. After reading the book it made me want to go out and play 18 holes by myself and really enjoy the beauty of this wonderful game. I will definitely read the book again!

One of the Best Golf Books

Gary Player's "Golf Begins at 50" was a timely book for me, as I came back to golf at age 51 after a 25-year break while I was doing other things (backpacking, canoeing, kayaking, etc.). This book includes instruction on all phases of the game. It isn't a beginner's book. Rather, it is for experienced golfers who want to continue playing well and improving after they reach the age where they aren't as strong and flexible as they used to be. Among other things, Player teaches you how to get extra distance by hitting a draw, and how to save your back with his so-called "walk through" swing. He also gives good advice about playing intelligently, and recommends exercises for physical fitness over 50. Player was one of the first pros to recognize the importance of physical fitness for good golf, and nowadays most pros and top amateurs agree with him. In my collection of about 30+ golf books, this is one of my 5 favorites. I recommend it for both men and women, and you don't have to wait until you are 50 to benefit from it. -- Bill from Bangor

Golf California Universitee
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2004-12-16
This is by far the best information book about EVERY golf course here in California. Not only does it provide all the information someone needs to know about a course but it also contains honest evaluations about them. It was put together by golfers for golfers and the evaluations are not only informative but humoruous as well. It is well organized and it is great for those golfers that want to venture outside the area they live in. What seperates this from other guides is the quality paper that it's printed on and is small enough to fit in most glove boxes.or seat pockets of your vehicle. Don't leave home without it!!!
