The book to read after 'Swing the Clubhead'

This is one of the best books I've read on the golf swing -- and I have a whole shelf-full. It breaks the swing down into large chunks, not micro-analyzing things you can only see in videos and over which you have little control once the backswing or downswing starts. Some of these micro swing positions are simply the body's response to the momentum of the club, and you don't have to try to think about them at all if you stay on plane. This was a most refreshing revelation. It helps first to have the swing feel described by Ernest Jones' Swing the Clubhead, so read that first. A few lessons won't hurt either to check your grip and alignment and otherwise fine tune your swing.

Carr's book is a delight for anyone who has had ANYTHING to do with golf, even one who doesn't play it but knows what a club is. Wit enhances seriousness, or seriousness enhances wit--I don't know which. These are down-to-earth suggestions drawn from a lifetime of cogitation. Golf becomes a metaphor for life--a good life. It is the best book I have read on the subject.

There's Only One Masters and Ron Green Captures It All

Review Date: 2008-04-06
As Ron Green writes: "Take away every sports event, but one. I'll Keep the Masters. I'm a hopeless fan, and I make no apologies...." Nor should he...The Masters is a one of a kind sporting event..the last sporting event that has not sold itself to altar of almighty greed. Sportsmanship, grace, beauty, and hospitality still matter at Augusta National and golf is all the better for it.
Combined with his latest book,"The Masters--101 Reasons to Love the World's Greatest Golf Tournament," this is Ron Green, Sr.'s loving and lasting tribute to the event, to the spirit he loves best, the spirit of Bobby Jones, Clifford Roberts, to golf itself, and to the spirit of Augusta.
If Journalism is history in a hurry, this book, "Shouting at Amen Corner" is good history--no, great history. It starts with Snead and Hogan, passes reverently to Palmer, Nicklaus, Player and Watson and on through to Tiger, Phil and others of the current era. Green writes about history as it happens, and, as the young lions become old lions and give way to a new generation, he writes about that, too, lovingly, caringly, but also candidly--most candidly.
This, as you might imagine, is a collection of his best coverage of the Masters beginining in 1955 and continuing through 1999. After brief introductory material for perspective, each chapter, each year, proceeds immediately into his coverage of the event....history as it happned, told by one who understands it, respects the participants, and appreciates their efforts, their agony and their ectasy.
This is a book, as he writes in the introduction, about "moments of greatness and moments of dreadful failure," all told from a deeply human perspective.
If you love golf, especially the Masters, or know someone who does, this book is a must. As was said of the ole Lone Ranger, "Return With Us Now to those Thrilling Days of Yesteryear...." That's what this book is all about, the wonderful days of yesteryear at Augusta and the men who made them wonderful.

A very nice book on a very beautiful subject for golf purists. Ausgusta National is ruled by a bunch of stiff ole grey men in green jackets. But the course and the annual tournament are stuff of legends.

This book has it all. It's like traveling around the world and stopping to play at the greatest courses-and only on beautiful, sunny days! What's more is that your tour guide (the author) knows every interesting and entertaining anecdote about each place and everyone who has played there. If you like this book, take a look at Golf Digest's 50th anniversary book, "Golf Digest: Golf's Greatest Players, Courses and Voices." More great photos and the best golf writing ever!

This is not so much my review as it is my 92 year old grandfather's. He's been golfing for over 50 years and still says it's the greatest game ever played. This book reminded him of places he had been and events he had witnessed. I could tell by his reaction that this is as fine a tribute to the game of golf as you will find anywhere. There could be no tougher critic. Highly recommended.

Do you have friends who are avid golfers? Do your eyes glaze over when they start talking about their game? Have you ever tried watching Tiger Woods on t.v. and been bored? That's because you don't know the sport of golf! Pick up one of these easy to read, quick-study guides to golf and you will find yourself wanting to join your friends in a game. Or, at the minimum, you 'll understand what they are talking about and when those big golf tournaments are on t.v., you'll get the game and find yourself interested, and enjoying being a spectator. I am impressed with how clearly this guide lays out the strategy of the game, explains the swings, scoring (eagle, birdy, par, bogey), use of equipment (woods, wedges, putters)...all those terms you've heard but never really understood. Now you will!

As a clinical exercise physiologist, I am constantly asked to review books for my patients. This is one book that I highly recommend for people who really WANT to improve their game. This book contains excellent sections of exercise and conditioning that will not only improve ones game, but will improve ones overall health. It contains everything that I look for in a "how to" book. This would be an excellent resource for anyone interested in golf or just fitness in general. I highly recommend it!

If you are looking for an outstanding easy to read golf book that is loaded with information Strengthen Your Game is it! As a weekend golfer and one who is always looking to "try" to shave a few strokes off his card...I found this book extremely helpful. The stretching, flexibility and conditioning sections were very helpful and really something that I havne't done in the past. After the first 18 holes of the year my entire body is sore and fatigue sets in for at least the last nine holes which adds strokes on my game i am sure. Controlling my swing is often a major problem with my game and this book has detailed information and several items for me to try this spring. A MUST READ for any golfer!!!!

My doctor said to get out and exercise - I told him I Golf and he said and what else? So, I got this book because it touted to teach me how to exercise and not ruin my game. Well, after following the guidelines laid out for you in the book, my chloresterol has dropped, my pants are looser and my drives are straighter and longer.
Man I got to tell you, something worked. Yes my doctor scared me and yes I really really followed the tips in the book. It also introduced me to a whole different sport, - bodybuilding. My muscles are bigger and stronger and my drives keep getting straighter and longer - It's got to be the book ahh its the combination of the book and the video.
Finally, a book that makes sense.

When I heard that Tiger Woods uses weights to help give him a more powerful swing I decided I would give it a try. My biggest problem was finding information that applied to me. You see, I love to play golf, ever sense my wife died I play all the time. The doctor said I need to do weight bearing exercises but I did not want to ruin my game. Any way, I got this book and it explained to me that by actuall being stronger I can be a better golfer. Also, now that I am a stronger golfer I now hit the ball even straighter because I have the power to manipulate the club more.
Not only that but the exercises described in the book really helped me strengthen my shoulders and lower back. The book taught me about form, control and hey I even lost a few.
Longer drives and fewer pounds would have to be my review of this book.

Best Golf Swing Instruction Book

I've read A LOT of golf instruction books (what can I say, I'm a book junkie.) If I could only have one book on how to swing to hit the long ball (drivers, fairway wood, long irons), this would be it. It does not teach you everything about hitting a golf ball. You won't learn anything about chipping, putting, or how to swing your wedges. It does present, in an easy to understand format, an easy swing for hitting the long ball.
Be aware that there are several different ideas about the right way to swing a club (swing axis, modern coiling swing, etc...) This book teaches a very traditional swing, and nothing else. I think that is a good thing. Too many books get the reader confused by trying to teach too many different things.
If you think a traditional golf swing is right for you, then this book is a good choice. It will teach it to you as a simple system you can understand.

I live in London and only found out about the Swing Factory recently, I've played for 19 years to a pretty good level but wanted some pointers to make me a little more orthodox and kill some of my bad habits.
I've both bought the book and attended the school and the messages throughout are consistent, its a very methodical approach and the drills in the book help the reader to build a swing the likes of which you see on TV.
I wouldn't say I'm a natural sportsman but with Dave's help and from time to time Steve's too I've been able to iron out the kinks in my swing but most importantly begin to recognise how to spot flaws myself and deal with them. There's a comment on Amazon.co.uk that a reviewer made saying they wished they'd known about this place and the book years ago - and I'd reiterate that.
I was by no means a beginner but on the downside that meant I also had 19 years of bad habits to correct.
Glad I read it, glad I attended the school.

Excellent Insight into sales and golf

Peter Athens using everyday sales and golf terminology engages the reader consistently. Each section is concise and to the point. Sales can be a specific science based on your product. Mr. Athens transcends any possible product line. Golf as we all know is sweeping the nation. Your average golfer is now more cognizant of circumstance and strategy. Parallels and analogies throughout the book lead the reader to the intent, "golf and sales are conceptually interchangeable". This book is an easy read. Nowhere in the text is the jargon so golf/sales specific that cross cultures cannot follow along. Mr. Athens uses personal humility and " lessons learned" to share the risks of sales and golf. Books of this nature grab me when self disclosure is used in proper doses. Experience and reflection combined with his choice of analogy make this a great read. I recommend this book to all sales trainers. What better teacher than a man telling " his story".
An excellent read

Peter Athens provides an excellent comparison between the rigors of the world of golf and sales. By using his own personal experiences in sales and golf, he is able to probide an insightful look at the striking similarities between the two in a clear and concise manner. This book will provide an excellent reference for sales professionals to keep with them throughout their carrers.
