I have read a number of golf books over the years and what I enjoyed about this book was its simple style and information. It was an easy read that made sense to me and was understandable without getting too technical. I liked the comics in the book along with all the photogrpahs to go along with the dialogue. Having numerous sports celebrities doing the drills along with other non pros gave me the feeling that we are all in the same boat and going through similar problems. This book addressed many important issues which was excellent!

Short and Sweet on Strategy

If your golf mechanics are ready to use on the golf course, then it's time to think about how to lower your score. Tom Watson is one of the best strategists in the game of professional golf. Read this book to discover how he picks clubs and where to hit them in various circumstances, how he hits repeatably shaped shots (straight, high and low fades, high and low draws, skyballs and worm-burning knockdowns), and how to get the advantage in matchplay. The goal is to lower the golf score, not to hit the world's most pure drive. And this is a good thing.

Highly recommended.

even a beginning golfer can reap benefits from this important publication. mr. watson is in touch with how to transfer knowledge to another golfer. this volume is so important to have if you are at all serious about the game. this book serves a wide variety of players from hackers wondering where they might get back strokes to single digit players seeking a new perspective. this is one must book for a golfers library.

Hands On Golf Book to Play Better

Step by step, this book is like a playing lesson. From the green backwards, Watson helps us realize what course maintenance is all about. This book will really help us begin to think a round out, rather than just look at the yardage, the obstacles and let it rip. Smart golf book. Higly recommended.

Great book for non-architecture nuts

To get a good overview of golf strategy, there are only a few ways to go. One is to corner your pro and make him give you a round lesson, asking "why" every two seconds like a three year old. Another is to read through books written on golf architecture. The problem here is that they don't exactly cover strategy from an easuly accesible perspective for the average golfer, and just getting ahold of some of the better books is a trick.

Last we have the handful of volumes on the subject writen for golfers of all caliber. Between Tom Watson's book, Armour's (A Round With...), and Harmon's (Playing Lessons), Watson's is not quite the easiest or most entertaining read (both these go to Armour), but it is the easily referenced and speaks most generally on the subject.

Both Harmon and Armour use the format of a round of golf to explain strategies and offer swing tips. You have to look through the different holes to find one that matches the type that always gives you trouble, then hope there is useful information there to help.

Watson organizes his writing by general topic (shot shaping and other swing tips and tricks, attacking holes, etc.) and then focuses on specifics (short par 3s, long par 3s, etc.). There are also just enough illustrations to help understand his points.

This is where the only gripe I have with the book comes out: I wish there were more illustrations, particularly diagrams of the many holes at Augusta National, Winged Foot, etc., that he describes. All these can be found in the World Atlas of Golf or any other book on famous layouts, but the reader could have been saved a trip to the bookshelve and the book made to look that much better.

All in all, if you want to know anything more about golf strategy that you do right now, this is the book to pick up. At the least, for those who have read Armour or Harmon, this will serve as a great review and reference.

My favorite golfer here reveals some of his thinking about the game.

Renowned for his tempo, short game and scrambling ability, you'll take away much in these areas.

From reading this, I too now play gloveless. It saves money, I feel the clubhead much better and have much better grip pressure from making this change.

Another tip that has saved many shots in my rounds, is that when the ball is down snug in the grass, play pitch shots down the line.

Freddie has many like these in here you'll find so useful as well. Good stuff!

A great golf reference for learning to play "trouble" shots.

Since I purchased Total Shotmaking the book has been my constant source of reference and review whenever my game drops a notch. The best part of this book, for me, is the section titled "Couples' Clinic." This section includes 60 excellent tips on shot making. Its almost as if Fred Couples becomes your personal instructor to help you correct bad shots or develop new shots to enhance your game.

Total Shotmaking has helped me lower my handicap because it has expanded my bag of shots to help me recover from difficult spots.

I am not a golf fan, but I found this book a great read none-the -less. It is so much more than a story about a very special golf club, though that aspect of the story is intriguing as well. The books appeal comes from the colorful and heartwarming characters that fill its pages. The emphasis on the real meaning of sportsmanship and family values is refreshing in a time when athletes with 'attitudes', and few scruples, are paid millions. It seems True Sport would appeal to a wide range of readers, from 12 to 90, with an interest in a great story

The True Sportsmanship of Life

TRUE SPORT is a swiftly moving story of a very special golf club followed through three generations of golfers. But golf serves primarily as a metaphor for life. TRUE SPORT offers up a heartwarming story of people we care about who play by the rules to win what is really valuable in life. Although not a golfer myself, I found True Sport to be a captivating tale that is a powerful antidote to today's cynicism about sports and life. Author John Laubhan combines skillful storytelling with genuine American values. The result is a five star opus which introduces interesting characters who affirm our shared humanity.

A novel about golf, sportsmanship and life

"True Sport," a golf club created from driftwood by a Scottish craftsman in the mid-1800s, bestows its owner with the ability to strike more powerful drives than any opponent can. Before he dies, the Scot presents the club to brash and cocky American golfer Jack Trevor Strand. We then follow "True Sport" from Jack's hand -- and a flooded course creek -- to an eventual home with Kentucky caddy Billy Prescott at the turn of the century. The story is told in reflective manner by Billy's grandson John and takes its own unexpected turns.

Though this self-published novel would have benefitted from tighter editing and more stringent proofreading, the plot is intriguing and has its suspenseful moments. In _Field of Dreams_ / _Shoeless Joe_ fashion, the reader is never really sure what might be truth and what might be fiction. If "True Sport" were made into a screenplay, the result would combine _Tin Cup_ and _The Legend of Bagger Vance_, with a little _Caddy Shack_ thrown in for good measure. This book should appeal first to golfers and fans of the sport, and secondly to those looking for an entertaining light read.

A True Delight

If I were to say all I could about "True Sport", this would indeed be a long review.
Let me start by saying that I'm not an easy sell.
I am the Director of Golf Instruction at Eagle Ridge Inn and Resort in Galena, Illinois as well as the Head Teaching Professional at the Westin Mission Hills Pete Dye Resort Course in Palm Springs, Ca.
But more than that, I, myself, attempt to capture this "True Sport" in my golf column which appears weekly in several different publications across the country. You might even say that I'm a bit of critic, much like the gourmet chef who can't find a decent restaurant.
I first cracked the book expecting to learn of a mythical, magical golf club which the main character somehow stumbled upon. That's how it was described to me anyway.
But it was far more.
It has more to do with how someone entered and exited the world. It is about how one unassmuming man learned, then taught. It is about real virtue.
Just as captivating are golf's historical figures who show up to compete in the many on-course battles in "True Sport".
If I do have a complaint, it's that the book was over before it started. One minute, I was deep in imagination, trying to figure out how the game must have been different in 1906. A minute later, I was overcome with the sense that the game hasn't changed.
I recommend "True Sport" unreservedly. It's a wonderful read that takes many turns.

For the few who ask why

Review Date: 2005-03-28
Many like golf. Some of them are obsessed by it. The only people who truely seem to object to it are those who have never even picked up a club and simply tried to hit a ball, despite the outcome.

What everyone, despite their own personal connection (or lack of) to the game, would like to know is why. Why do people spend sums great and small to play a game with more furver than has been seen in virually all of human history? Why do they keep it up year after year, even if they see to sign of improvement, or even a glimer of hope that they may some day win a championship? Simply put, why golf?

Cullen's journey to find this answer takes him to many possible fonts of wisdom: psychology, evolutionary science, Greek philosophy... His answer is, of course, not singular. He finds that, from an elemental instinctive level to a higher appeal to our intelects, golf satisfies and entices us in more ways than we are conciously aware.

The questions that come up and their answers will be of interest to the duffer and duffer-hater alike. If you still have a few weeks before the course thaws off, or you want to know what your spouse keeps sneaking out on Saturday morning to do, this is the book to go to.

A Must for Every Golfer's Bookshelf

Review Date: 2000-05-23
This wonderful book answers the question that every golfer has been asked: "Why in the world do you play that stupid game?" Part of the answer that we duffers already know is that even the most modest golf course is a pretty nice place to take a walk. But Cullen goes beyond that, and shows that there might actually be a deeper reason, reflecting our species' emergence from the forest on to what Cullen calls the "clipped grassland" savannas of Africa, and thus the genetically-wired comfort a modern day "clipped grassland" can give. Another reason we love the game is that it's eminently companionable, allowing two, three or four people to spend a few hours together in an atmosphere wholly unlike that of any other sport. Cullen fleshes this out beautifully, with chapters on both an annual trek he takes with friends for several days of golf and side bets, and the delights of "twilight golf" with his kids when there are few other people around and you only play with the old balls at the bottom of your bag. He also points out that golf is the only sport where the weekend duffer can play as well as the pros, even if only for a hole or two or even if only once in his life. I once played with a friend, who could never hit a Randy Johnson fastball or dunk over Shaq, who had a hole-in-one during the round. It was a wonderful, exciting achievement, one that many pros never experience, but one which happens every summer weekend in foursomes of even high handicappers.

Read this book, and you'll never be at a loss to explain this most benign of obsessions.

View from the Uninitiated

As a curious, but skeptical non-golfer, I hoped Why Golf would reveal something which would turn around some dubious stereotypes about the game and the reasons people play it with such apparent zeal. To my surprise, I learned that while golf may appeal to primal human attraction to stretches of clipped grass, it is as much about enduring human nature as any endeavor which seeks perfection rarely if ever attainable. Bob Cullen's personal journey through an unlikely array of sites and characters made for an engaging, often funny, and inspiring read. Cullen provides insight into male fellowship in a sporting environment unique to golf that has nothing to do with making deals on the course. While Cullen's experience in Iran may not have exposed him fully to the cultural attributes of that society, his point relating to the ethnic origins and and ability to master the game are well taken. Fortunately, he does not stretch the point to cover geo-political themes beyond the game itself.

I'd recommend Why Golf to anyone considering taking up the game for the first time. The reassurance he gives to the novice that it is possible to experience the same satisfaction as the veteran in exploring this highly complex game, has nudged me closer to the links.

This is a good book for people who like to read about golf. The author's thoughts on the sources of golf's appeal to the human psyche and well observed accounts of golf charcters and out-of-the-way golf places yield intriguing insights into the special qualities of the game. The author's tone is genial and unpretentious. Reading it is a bit like meeting a pleasant stranger on the first tee and sharing some thoughts about golf as you play a round together.

I was extremely surprised that Arnold didn't mention meeting me in the parking lot of Houston's Memorial Park one evening after he'd finished a round of golf and I was returning to my car after running on the track there. We had a memorably joyful conversation -- I asked him how he was doing, and he said fine, and he asked me how I was doing, and I said fine, and we both smiled. He should have mentioned that episode, but he didn't

Before there was Governator Arnie there was Arnie the golfer. It seems like golf has always had a shining star or two that go beyond the game to making a lasting impression on the world at large. And Arnie certainly fit that. He generated an image for a generation of people, inspiring to do better in their work, in their life. Not the world's best golfer, he's simply Arnie, the world famous guy next door. His approachability and down-home humility have secured his status as one of the most admired people in and out of sports.

This book could almost be his scrapbook. It combines stories, both personal and professional, rare photos from his private collection and removable facsimilies of twelve collectibles from his archives.

This is a fascinating book with which to curl up during the long winter months. A good Christmas present for the golfer in the family.
