Okay, don't take it all so seriously...it's just a ball right...so look at the darkside of the ball...the evils of golfswing-though...the art of club tossing, five mortal sins to avoid.....the truth about sandbagging.....how to be captain of your own ship (hmm thought it was golf...not sailing?) and being in the present moment ...golf is Zen but in what the authors call tghe putter in cheek book-- you learn how to lower your score...and improve your GOLF ATTITUDE -- NOT~! If you loved caddyshack-- you'll love this.....price is right-- every golfer in the world deserves this for birthday...or stock it in your Pro shop-- keep it on your shelf after a really BAD game...but it's a game remember and you can have a ball if you can't be the ball!

When I opened the package that contained a book "Being the Ball" by some guy calling himself Billy Balata, I thought that it had to be some kind of a joke. Like most Golf nuts, I enjoyed and still enjoy - "Caddyshack" as much as the next guy, but couldn't see how this book wasn't going to do the film a great disservice. I couldn't have been more off the mark....

I would recommend this book to anyone who has come to the conclusion that golf is as tough a game as there is to master -- we might as well laugh at our own shortcomings. Underscored throughout all of the examples in "Being the Ball" is that there is never a bad round of golf. It may be required reading for anyone who wants to share a round with me.

Mr. Balata has amazing insight into the game of golf.

This is the "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" of golf books. It had a provocative, perky spirit that moved my heart with every stroke. It is refreshing to see the dawn of a rising star among golf's rigid thinkers and bad dressers.

Its creative, witty approach to presenting golfs important features makes it a must read for all golfers. Your mantra after reading "Being the Ball" will be "Billy, Billy, Billy" as you check the line of the most pressure packed putt of your life!!!

This is the first golf instruction book that really shows you the basics to improving your golf game! I have been playing golf on and off for many years. This book breaks down the entire golf game in very easy to understand steps. If you apply the six "basic angles" in the book and practice them you will surely see positive results! I'm a true believer in the concepts. Why? Because they work! They absolutely make sense! In fact you don't even need to swing a golf club to practice the angles. Get the book and you will see for yourself. I had the pleasure of meeting Julius quite by accident after I had been applying his principles. I told him in person that he had changed my whole approach to golf.

I am somewhat biased because I know Julius, but I wouldn't know him if he wasn't a great teacher. He has a very unique approach that is completely different from the run-of-the-mill teacher and probably everyone else in the Top 100. As a golf professional, he was very instrumental in helping me take my game to the next level. I have seen him work with beginners and average players alike, and he gets results like no one else. His teaching approach is in this book, and anyone who gets it will benefit.

Julius is the best golf instructors that I have taken a lesson from. Julius fixed flaws THAT EVEN DR. JIM SUTTIE COULDN'T FIX -and the best part about it was that it cost me half the price. I dropped my handicap down from a 20 to a (10-12) handicap - over a 3 month period taken 2-3 lessons/month. TRUST ME, when it comes to building a fundamental golf swing that is consistent, Julius is one of the best.
While some of the other top 100 golf instructors that I have taken from talk angles and formulas, Julius talks feel/fundamentals and less clutter of the mind while preparing to strike the ball. If your a beginner or want to improve your fundamentals, read this book or come to Chicago in the summer and take lessons from him -you won't regret it.

I was a little skeptical when a friend suggested that I buy and read this book but after going completely through it, I was guite surprised how easy the reading was and it all tied together. I have read a ton of books, mags, tips on got but this was very different. I personally sought out Julius for lessons after reading his book and it has completely changed my approach to golf. His unique style makes learning golf not only fun but he incorporates real life situations with his examples. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking to better their game both physically and mentally.

Correct Address Positions Lead to Better Golf

Review Date: 2005-08-10
This is a different kind of instructional book on golf. Instead of focusing on mechanics and positions in the swing, the author keys on six angles vital to effective ball striking. Five are established in addressing the ball. All are clearly defined and illustrated. The book also contains some excellent drills to help the reader get into better positions at address. There are chapters on the short game and even a few pages on the swing itself. This is an excellent book for anyone above a 10- or 12-handicap or for any golfer who has come to the conclusion that setting up to the ball correctly makes up at least 75 percent of effective ball striking. It is also easy to read. Most importantly, the key points made can be put to the test right away at the driving range.

I told my father when he was writting this book that I wouldn't read it until it was fully published and I could go buy it at the store, to truely appreciate the expirence. When that day finally arrived I got the book, opened to page one, and didn't put the book down until I was done. I smoke, and for that 4 hours I didn't even stop to go have a cig. The book reached out and grabbed me, like the IRS when you don't pay your taxes. If you look up page turner in the dictionary there is a picture of this book for a defination. Do yourself a favor and enjoy this work as much as I did.

I especially enjoyed the stories about the important friendships between Robinson and Dodgers' manager Branch Rickey and Jewish ballplayer Hank Greenberg. Truly inspiring. It took a health expert to tell me more about Jackie Robinson and Hank Greenberg than all the bios I've read on these memorable athletes. Letha Hadady has provided a real service here by combining history, culture and health care all in one wallop -- and she did so with a firm command of her subjects. I knew about the religious barrier and the color barrier, but not to the extent as provided here in this short but illuminating piece. Jackie Robinson had diabetes? I didn't know. I go back to Montreal with him, even before he got to Brooklyn, when he played for the Montreal Royals, so I've always felt that connection with Robinson and still think he did more to bring the races together than anyone. I was inspired by this story and I'll be returning to this Amazon Short to learn more from Letha's health tips. Altogether, a superb essay. Jack Engelhard

When I was a kid my father took me to Brooklyn's Ebbits Field and we sat high up in the bleachers, ate popped corn and yelled for the home team. At age ten I rode my bike half way across the City to the house of Carl Erskine, the Dodgers' star pitcher so that he could sign my baseball. Even now--so many years later--I can still list the lineup of the team that put Brooklyn on the map. I never got to meet Jackie Robinson, a great American hero and shining example for everyone who loves the sport.

This Amazon Short tells Jackie Robinson's awe-inspiring personal story-- his troubled youth and struggles against racial prejudice. As an added bonus, because this biography is written by Letha Hadady a highly respected natural health expert, it describes the best diet and herbs for diabetes, a disease that Jackie had and that many other people suffer from today. Jackie acted with great character and confidence in all that he did. Youth today can learn a lot from his story. Anyone with diabetes will be interested in the sound health advice found here. I strongly recommend buying this Short and I look forward to the upcoming Champion Spirit Series of Amazon Shorts.

If you cannot let go of the eternal search for just the right grip, just the perfect driver, the longest ball or all the other "externals" of golf, you will not be able to discover the TRUTH in these pages. Since reading this book for the first time last week, I have had three sub-par nines in the last seven days. I can't remember having a sub-par nine at any time. The real joy and glory of golf is revealed in these pages and my recent scores show that the applied philosophy does work...but, better scores is not the goal and once you let this truth become part of your golfing being, you will come to enjoy the game, the people you play with and even yourself at a deeper and more fulfilling level. "When the student is ready, the teacher will appear". I have read many golf training books and this one may just be for you if you are "ready".

I started playing golf 2 years ago. I am just your typical once a week, once every 2 weeks golfer. A friend at college informed me of this book. I read it and then reread it. (A note: I hate to read) This book just peaked my interest. The first time out on the course after reading it I hit better than I ever had by far, took 9 strokes off my best ever. I have been trying the mental techniques and positive thinking strategies presented here and can honestly say I am having more fun on the golf course than I have ever had. Each time I play I have more and more confidence and my shots are getting more and more accurate. I recommend this book to anyone who loves the game of golf or the art of Zen.

The two authors would apparently rather be on the course than back home reading -- this book is succinct and filled with practical, go-do-it advice. So you can pick it up, read a chapter at random, and try it out. Throw this one in your car, then stuff it in your bag and give their ideas a shot. I know Brown's work from his earlier books on tennis -- more my game -- and Sarbin has apparently seen every green there is. Not a bad buy from two veterans. It seems to have been priced as a gift book, but I'd get two and keep one for yourself.

First and foremost, if you have a golfer you need to buy a gift for, look no more. This is especially true if you want said golfer to go off in a corner and be quiet for a number of days. A Disorderly Compendium of Golf grabs you won't let go. The only downside is you'll have to put up with your golf walking around the house, saying things like, "Did you know Jack Nicklaus finished in the top ten in all four annual majors five times in his career?" Granted, not inspired dinner conversation, but pure nirvanna to a golfer.

In "Emerald Gems", Larry Lambrecht has been able to capture the feel and distinct nuances of the Irish links. The stunning photographs and accompanying stories provide the reader with an incredible sense of how golf was and is meant to be played and enjoyed. David Owen said, "The thing I like best about golf is the sense of infinite possibility..." Emerald Gems presents a real glimpse at that possibility and is a must read for those fortunate to have visited and played, and those who dream of doing so.

I have seen Larry Lambrecht's work before in the annual "Emerald Gems" calendar and notecard series. Lambrecht is a world class photographer with a particular specialty in shooting Irish Golf Courses (as well as many others across the globe). Not only does Lambrecht capture a view of a spectacular golf hole through his camera lens, he also has an incredible eye for catching a moment in nature using golf landscape as a backdrop. (see page 18, 98, 114, etc.)

Ireland's "Links" courses are built along the coast, and as such in Emerald Gems, the connection between land and sea is apparent in many of the images.

Emerald Gems sits on a table in our home and is admired by guests and friends for the simple beauty of the Irish Countryside. Be warned though, If you have an affection for the game of golf and have never been to Ireland, the images of Waterville, Old Head and Lahinch alone will have you calling a travel agent. If you don't play golf, and have never seen the coast of Ireland, you may suffer the same impulse.

Brilliant Golf Landscape Photography
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2006-09-02
Emerald Gems is a terrific compilation of golf landscape photographs in a large coffee table type of format (11x12?). Many if not all of the very best courses of Ireland are reviewed.

One key element I'd like to point out up front is this book is very strong about landscape photograhy, but not so about the golf and how to play the game in Ireland. Thus I would say you need to be prepared to just enjoy the pictures for what they are: fantastic and breathtaking landscapes. The golfing is secondary.

Some may think my last comment is crazy, but I think if you take a closer look you will realize the photographs do nothing to prepare the golfer for what to expect golfing wise. Laurence's vantage point for 90% of the photographs consists in seeking the highest dune (usually behind or beside the green) and then frame for the landscape and make sure to include the green. Given this, you simply will not be able to figure out if the hole is a par 3, 4, or even 5. You will also have no idea how it's played. You simply do not get the golfer vantage point from the fairways and bunkers. The only exception to this is on par 3's where you guess the vantage point is from the tee. Unfortunately, the captions to the photos do nothing either to tell you if it's a par 3, 4, or 5. But then again, maybe this is by design because it wouldn't matter. Case in point: page/slide 200 illustrates a wonderful rock outcroping from some cliffs with a tiny green on a shelf. The caption reads "4th at Kilkee". Great landscape picture, but what does it tell you about the hole? Does it matter or help the photograph to even know this?

Instead, it's best to just admire the quality of the photographs. You start to appreciate the framing of the photos, the colors, the foreground and background and how it all works together seemlessly, the elements of wind/sun/clouds/shadows and how they contribute. It makes the golf part of a whole. One thing you will notice is the tremendous ruggedness of the regions and their dunes. This book is broken down into regions like the Scottish Golf Links book, and again here you'll grow to appreciate the differences from region to region. I still keep coming back to the print on page 182 of Royal County Down with a surreal set of colors and an almost mystical background. Just an unbelievable print. Simply beautiful in conveying what the landscape has to offer. I find myself gravating over and over again towards that region of northern Ireland.

The text is fairly simplistic with nice historical notes about the course being reviewed and is at times amusing, but don't look for grand explanations about a given course and it's holes. Granted there are a few highlighted holes here and there, but it's usually to express how difficult they are. Little is imparted on how to approach them. There's also very little if any correlation between the text and the holes being photographed. That aside, I think the best thing the text does is reinforce your desire to go over and visit Ireland for yourself. Some of the charming Irish culture comes through in areas of the text and it makes you want to appreciate the whole package in person.

In the end, I think this is a wonderful effort from Laurence. Beautiful rugged dune landscapes with intriguing surroundings in a perfect format convey the grandeur of Ireland. Tremendous colours and textures breath life into the prints. The regional variety expresses the richness the links have to offer. As for the golf, I think it acts more as a complement to the tremendous scenery being displayed.

GREAT GOLF STORY

If you love golf and its history, this is the book.
Curt Sampson is once again great and meticulous with the details.
He loves the games and its immortal characters.
This is a great golf history book.
The coming about of the greatest rivalry in golf between Palmer and Nicklaus is well detailed here. Ben Hogan, already the greatest golfer of his generation, seemed to be reaching out for his last glory.
It seems that the sport is no longer as elegant as it once was because the characters are no longer as heroic as they once were.
Highly recommended and a very good book to read over and over.

Down Golf's Nostalgia lane

Curt Sampson has ably resurrected the magic of golf in 1960, the famous year in which Palmer became King, Nicklaus loomed, and Hogan and Snead made last runs at majors. Reading this tale one is transported back to what seems to us nostalgically as a simpler time. For a golf nut it is so much fun to relive those dramatic events. I would have given this book 5 stars except John Feinstein has demonstrated what a 5-star golf book is really like (The Majors, A Good Walk Spoiled). Sampson does not quite write with the same level of detail and insight as Feinstein, and lapses a bit more into the rehashing of familiar stories, but he is still quite good.

Just A Great History of one of Golf's Turning Points

Only on the fringe of my teenage years in 1960, Sampson marvelously chronicles this year in golf and society. Society we all know because of the revolution that was gaining momentum.

TV is growing and would play a major role in golf's history as well. Along with three individuals, Hogan, Palmer and Nicklaus.

The "y" in the road is the televised Open at Cherry Creek, when Palmer made the celebrated charge. Hogan tries but comes short, and Nicklaus, not knowing for sure his position, didn't really grind, or he likely would have tied. Palmer wins, the sport grows, and as fate seemed to dictate, the game is on the way to the marvelous heights we now see it occupy.

Reading this wonderful book, it gives one more insight and compassion into those early pioneers who made it what it is. Today's pros seemed so pampered, however, the stress is large and looming larger.

Sampson is articulate writer and delivers great insights: Hagen's saying to Sarazen before the shot heard round the world at Augusta: "Come on, hurry up, I've got a date tonight."; and Gary Player calls up Hogan for some advice on his swing, so Hogan asks, whose clubs do you play? When Player answers Dunlop, Hogan responds, "Ask Mr. Dunlop."

Empathy for those like Sampson who wrote passionately about the game and didn't really make a living, let alone get rich. Loved the story about Bob Drum being snubbed by his paper until they hear Palmer is leading The Open, then cable him to send a story. Upon receipt of telegram, Drum crumbles it into ball, and said: "Hope to hell you get it."

This is a must for any serious golf collection of books on the game.

One of the greatest golf books ever, back in print.

I've read a lot of golf books. This is one of my favorites, and I'm glad to see it's finally back in print--there are a lot of golfers I need to recommend this to. It's more just plain fun to read than almost any one I can name. One of golf's great years, and one of the sport's all-time great cast of characters: Hogan, past his prime at 48 but trying to win one more major; Arnie, the greatest golfer of the 50s, trying to win the Grand Slam; 20-year-old Nicklaus, the chunky college kid; and plenty of other characters, like the irascible Charlie Sifford, the first black player on the tour; the legendary Sam Snead; Chi Chi Rodriguez, who weighed 118 pounds; party animal Doug Sanders; Gary Player, the Man in Black from South Africa; and several others. Reading about these guys is just fascinating, they come alive in this book, and the story of how several of them could have and should have won the Open is one of the best in golf. Sampson has a breezy, highly readable style and has a good sense of humor. I highly recommend this book to any fan of golf.

This instructional from Nick Faldo is one of the most comprehensive golf books around. You can tell that Nick is very confident in what he knows and teaches about the golf swing and how to use the "modern swing" and its ability to hold up under championship conditions. I highly recommend this book, especially to golfers 6'2" and taller.

Rare the individual who can both play golf at such an amazing high level and teach it on the simple plain he demonstrates here in this book to us hackers.

There are great gems throughout, but I picked up the best tip on one of my weakest areas, long bunker shots.

The photo sequences are some of the best, so clear and to the point. The final section: Playing the Game, gives some head and strategy advice from one of the coolest, and a two-time Master Champ as well as British Open, etc.

Not only for the advanced . . .

I am relatively new to golf, having only picked up a club for the first time two years ago. I only truly began playing regularly last fall when my girlfriend gave me a set of irons and this book. Starting from the beginning of Faldo's book, I spent one month working on his drills inside and around my house in my spare time. I broke 100 two months later. I can't begin to explain the genius of this book, other then to say that it offers a stepwise and easy methodology to developing a reliable swing, while also offering excellant advice about bunker play, the short game, and putting. A must read for any new golfer looking to improve and to enjoy the game more.

This book far exceeded my expectations. I have read several dozen golf books, and if I had to recommend one book to a new golfer (or an experienced golfer for that matter) this would be it. This book covers all the fundamentals as well as advanced shotmaking techniques. It's beautifully written, well organized and the photography is first rate. Thanks, Nick...this is a book I'll keep coming back to again and again.

THE BEST GOLF BOOK FOR AN ADVANCED GOLFER

I am an avid golfer, one who has made golf more of a hobby than a sport. I am a 1 handicap, mostly self taught, and I enjoy learning as much as possible about the swing and how to play the game. There are few golf books which I feel worthy of recommending to anyone. I have not only recommended this book to many of my fellow golf enthusiasts, I gave the book to a young golfer who wanted to understand more the game. Faldo gives an excellent insight to many of the things he learned from David Leadbetter (another great book). The pictures give a full understanding of what he is trying to explain. Most of the drills are something everyone should try. I think the most unique part of this book is that an advanced golfer can get alot out of the book. Most golf instruction books treat the reader like a tennis player gone awry, rather than a golfer with a desire to learn more. I would recommend this book to everyone who enjoys golf and wants to learn more about the swing, or more about how to think your way around a golf course. Faldo has proven in his career that he attains perfection and wants to be the best. I would say he took the same attitude toward this book
