ive been a packer fan since the lombardi era, but only vaguely knew the pre-50s history of this franchise and players, this is a well researched and informative history of the earlier years . there are lots of pics and sidebars highlighting the packers own hall nof fame greats, as well as how the fans and citizens of green bay have stuck by this team through many trials and financial hardships . in the fight for survival,( that is the money generated to keep a pro franchise in town), this book exposes the great character and love of a city and its inhabitants to support above and beyond the call of duty, the glory as well as the lean times , my love for this, the last of the small town teams from the beginnings of the nfl has renewed my passion and makes me want to move to green bay to live the dream, unique among the nfl and at the top!!!!!!!!!

My 88-year-old father grew up in Wisconsin. He's a lifelong Packer fan. I haven't seen or read the book, but he's absolutely enthralled by it. We talk frequently, and he brings the book up often. Every page has a memory for him.

So, don't take my word for it: take the word of a man who watched Don Hutson catch passes on blustery Green Bay Sundays.

A Good "History" of Mississippi High School Football!

Review Date: 2008-01-11
Because I grew up in Memphis and attended the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, I never understood what was so great about Mississippi high school football, and the pride that the different cities and communities had in their teams. For example, I never understood the big deal about South Panola, that is, until my high school beat them at their place my sophomore year. It was the first high school "sellout" I've ever seen.

The reader of this book will soon understand (if he doesn't already) why Mississippi was recently named the greatest football state in the Union. The author chooses a very different but effective way to tell the story of high school football in Mississippi, through little snippets of interviews with coaches. Who better to tell the story than the coaches who coached the games?

If you want some great lessons on how to face adversity as well as how to handle success, this book is a must read. The authors have taken nuggets from the most influental people in many young mens lives and given them to the rest of us. This book, although it has a football theme is so much more than that. Anyone who is directing or planning on directing young lives should read this book and use the lessons to assist them.

Receiving this book as a present from a relative, I was surprised that I actually found myself unable to put it down... you know how presents from relatives usually go! I would describe this book as the "Guide to Understanding High School Football in Mississippi." But this book goes further to understanding just why football is so revered in the state beyond the high school level. You realize football's importance and development through the Junior College and University stages as well. Growing up in North Carolina I only knew the importance of basketball; however, in Mississippi it seems clearly obvious that football reigns as king. Now don't let me fool you, this book is informative but it is also an enjoyable read. The coaches' humorous and heartfelt quotes about their players and their sport reveal that football in Mississippi is much more than a game; it's a metaphor for life which they take very seriously. I would fully recommend Gridiron Gold to anyone who enjoys competition, stories of inspiration, or just remembering what it was like to fully immerse yourself in Mississippi's favorite high school pastime.

This is a great read for anyone who enjoys football! I originally got this book for my husband who played high school football in Mississippi. The first page that he flipped to after opening the book contained a picture and quote from his old coach. We read the book together and let me just say that I never realized that high school football could have such an impact on almost every aspect of life.
The book renewed my pride in my home town in Mississippi. The stories are so inspirational. The lessons that are shared by the coaches quoted in the book will go straight to your heart and will be directly applicable to your life whether you live in Mississippi or New York. For all you girls out there, you don't have to know about football to appreciate this book. It is a very easy read and for the most part is divided into short quotes that you can digest one at a time if you are new to the subject. Also will be a good gift for someone in your life playing high school football currently. It might give them a bit of insight into why coach is so tough sometimes.

Well Deserved!!!!

This is one of the "coolest" compilations of stories and recollections that I have seen in quite a while. It was like listening to an old coach tell all his stories from throughout the years. Really quick read, and great to have around as a reference to all the great legends of this region. I was amazed with how many of the old ball coaches that I recognized and remembered from my younger days. HIGHLY RECOMMEND

"Hurricane Season" is a true story about triumph through hardship for a private Christian school's football team in New Orleans overcoming the devastation of Hurricane Katrina and Rita. This book takes a personal look at the devastation that Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita caused within six weeks. It's about a High School football coach's and his players' commitment to their school and team in midst of chaos and turmoil. It's about how football can pull a community together. I particularly liked reading how the coach motivated his players and how he taught them to be men. It was heartwarming to see how much the coach loved his players and cared about their personal lives and not just how they played football.

Another aspect that really touched me was J.T.'s close relationship and admiration for his father. His father built the school and was a big part of the football team. After the father died, J.T. still thinks of him often and wishes he could still run things past him. He feels a real sense of responsibility to make his dad proud and run the school well.

The ending of the book is very moving and emotional when the team finally gets to play football after it looked like they wouldn't even have a season. As I read about the games, it felt like I was right there in the stands watching and cheering for them. This book started out slow and was pretty sad, but is definitely worth reading to get an inside look at what the people of New Orleans went through during Katrina and how a football team really jelled. It certainly made my few problems look totally insignificant in comparison.

I can't say enough good things about this book!! This book is remarkable!! It tells the story about how people dealt with Hurrican Katrina and the aftermath and a remarkable man, J. T. Curtis, Head football coach and principal of the John Curtis Christian School. How he and his family brought together a school and the football team is an unbelievable story. Their story will make you cry, laugh and cheer!! I really enjoyed this book A LOT!!!

Hurricane season is an excellent complement to Douglas Brinkley's " The Great Deluge." While Brinkley provides an excellent analytical and scholarly account of Hurricane Katrina that should set the standard for many years; Hurricane Season captures the powerful emotional dimensions. Though grounded in the story of a high school football team, it transcends normal sportswriting by speaking to the bigger panorama of life, suffering, loss, and inspiring tales of recovery and fortitude.
With so many aspirations and dreams hanging in the balance, the J.T. Curtis School and football team regroup after enduring catastrophe and devastation and become a beacon of hope and solace for many of the victims.
Replete with an abundance of anecdotes and personal accounts, Thompson weaves their stories into a gripping narrative that will find appeal among readers of all genres. This is a stirring and fast paced treatment of those perilous days that is both wrenching and redeeming.

The Patriots are a football team that plays for a Christian school John Curtis. Members of the founder's family, his five children and grandchildren make up part of the faculty members at the school. They aren't just a school; they are more like a family. They have taken football members into their homes for extended periods of time.

The Patriots have a great team due largely to their head coach J.T. Curtis, son of John Curtis. "Hurricane Season," the story, takes place in August 2005. The Patriots are preparing to play their first pre-season game, which they do, and it's a shut out in their favor. Unfortunately, hurricane Katrina is coming through the state. Katrina will drastically change John Curtis School and students' lives dramatically. Readers glimpse the struggles shared by each family during and after the storm.

J.T. is determined to get his football team back together for some normalcy. While many of the players have been relocated, J.T. realizes that getting the guys back on the field will be a big help to them mentally.

Neal Thompson has written a very good book that should be read by everyone. A true story, while reading you feel as if you're actually there in New Orleans and very much apart of the school, their family and face all of their triumphs. After finishing "Hurricane Season" I went to the website just to get information on the school and the players.

being woody's grandson, i liked it, there was a wide array of people talking to the author about him. I thought that my favorite section was the last, the friends, foes and fans part. it seems as if many people here in columbus have their own personal run-in or encounter with him and for me, those stories are infitley more interesting than anything else.

the recollections from the players and coaches were good, but they kind of blurred together under the "they may be smarter than me but i can outwork 'em" mantra.

overall, good job. the photos were pretty interesting. we have a few at home that will never make it out, including one of woody in my darth vader helmet at christmas (i must've been ten or less).

Jim Otto's injuries have left him a pitiful cripple, in constant pain, who can't do even the simplest physical tasks that normal people take for granted. He will probably die soon from their aftereffects, in fact should have died from them several times already. We know this because he says so, while matter-of-factly stating that, if he had it to do over again, he would do things exactly the same?! I don't get it, and even if I did get it I wouldn't approve of it--if there is anything worth putting yourself through this kind of hell for, it is surely not the fleeting "glory" of the football field. In spite of, or maybe because of, all this, the book is endlessly readable and interesting--his hardcore masochism holds the same kind of strange fascination that makes people watch car wrecks (and football games, I suppose). It helps that Otto comes across as very likable, even admirable in his way--honest, conscientious, and of course dependable. Even if at times he seems to be rather, um, stupid.

Reviewer: Bisoneyes from Redditch, Worcestershire United Kingdom
Jim Otto. The Pain of Glory is a book that covers Otto's life to date, but pays particular attention to the early years of the storied NFL club the Oakland Raiders.

Beginning with his poor childhood in rural Wisconsin, the book tracks Otto's progression to college, and on to the NFL. It outlines Otto's determination to succeed when all about him were telling him he was too small to play college football at the centre position, let alone go on to the Pro game.

Once at the Raiders the book highlights the painful beginnings for the club, and the struggles Otto overcame to become an All Pro centre. Otto's obvious love for the club and for its owner Al Davis shine through the pages. Along with this Otto highlights the key players with whom he played football with and tells some great stories about the likes of Ben Davidson, Kenny Stabler and other Raider greats.

He speaks out in the book against the modern NFL and the attitude of the player and their agents. He rages against the inclusion of players he consider unworthy of selection to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, but whose busts stand side by side with his. Finally he lambasts the NFL who called him a liar.

Most movingly though Otto speaks of the 'Pain of Glory'. About the untold operations he has had on his once primed body, which is now giving up on him as he pays for the success he enjoyed in ways he probably never thought of. This section is an emotional, insightful and tragic commentary on professional football.

In summary 'The Pain of Glory' is a superb reflection on an exemplorary career. Its a must read for all Raiders fans, and those interested in the NFL.

A very straight forward book by Jim Otto. There is a price when one wants to achieve or aspire to achieve glory on the gridiron. Jim Otto is that person and he candidly tells us what he was willing to sacrifice to reach that plateau. For the Raider fan at heart, or a football fan in general, this is the book to read.

I was 16 when the Browns marched through the 1980 season as the Kardiac kids and I followed every game. Knights book brings back memories, many good and one bad.

History has put the season in perspective. Rutigliano recognized a bit faster than most in the NFL how the rules changes around the passing game meant the game itself was changing. Luckily he had Brian Sipe and a great group of receivers, including running backs like Calvin Hill who could catch. On offense the Browns had the right group to capitalize on the rules changes and on defense they really were quite average but made the best of what they had.

The book really sums up the season really well. Also for die hard 1980 fans, there is now a DVD available with one game from that season, (Greatest Games Series). It's the Green Bay game that Sipe hit Logan late for the game winner. I am not sure why they choose that game other than legal reasons, but watching the full game from beginning to end is a real pleasure and it does put into perspective that the 1980s team really was mediocre in many ways, but won because they were ahead of their times, and the credit for that season really lies squarely in the hands of Rutigliano.

I was born in 1979 but still loved this book!

Rash

A Futuristic Thriller

Review Date: 2007-08-26
Rash by Pete Hautman is a great futuristic adventure that is impossible to quit reading. In this book the United States government has legislated safety in every aspect of life.

There were so many laws concerning safety that you could not even run track without wearing all kinds of silly pads and liners to prevent scrapes and chafing. You were required to take medicine called Levoular to slow your reflexes and give you more time to think about your actions. Is this what our society will be like one day?

Bo Marsten comes from a family with the genes of a temper problem, and as you can imagine it would be very hard to live in an environment like this with this kind of problem. Because of various events involving him getting in trouble he is forced to work at a Mc Donald's Pizza factory in Canada (which has now been annexed by the country) instead of going to prison.

While at the factory he made the Goldshirts football team. Now it is illegal to play football. There is no way for him to back out of playing but why would he want to? There is no way to get caught, because the head of the factory started up the team. And players also get some extra privileges. This is a funny part about the book and a great reason to read it.

One of the really amusing parts of the story is when the factory head, also the coach, talks about "destroying" the Red shirt team at the rival Coca Cola plant nearby. He says this so many times that it reminds you how opposite from society this guy really is. Beside from being in a jail kind of environment this sounds like a very fun place to be, if you were a Goldshirt. Although Bo was a Goldshirt he still wanted to find a way back to his old life.

Read the book to find out what happens next. Why would anybody not want to read this book? It is full of entertainment, funny, not hard to read, and a taste of hopefully what our future will not be.

A Football Book in Dystopian Wrapping
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-04
Dystopia. It's the opposite of Utopia. It's a futuristic world where best intentions bring horrific results. And our protagonist, Bo Marsten, is stuck in one in the year 2074 in a country called the United Safer States of America (USSA), where just about everything with a whiff of danger is illegal.

But don't be fooled, especially if you are a teenage boy who likes football better than reading. This is really a football book, plain and simple, because football is illegal in the USSA, and when Bo gets sent to prison in the Canadian tundra for his violent temper (punching high school classmates -- not to mention calling them names -- is illegal, you see), he winds up on the warden's special "gold shirts" football team.

Turns out, Bo Marsten likes football. He likes hitting and running like the wind to avoid GETTING hit. The wrinkle here is that the football field at his prison is fenced in so that the polar bears of the tundra don't get in, and if the ball goes over the fence, then you have to go get it -- before the bear gets you, that is.

RASH is a bit predictable, but this is a small matter considering its strength is its fast-paced plot tailor-made for reluctant reading boys who love sports (and especially football). The heart of the book is the middle section, at the tundra prison, where you will meet wonderful characters like the warden, Elwin Hammer, a beefy menace who calls his charges "nails" (to be hammered into place if they act up, you see). Then there's Bo's 300-pound roomie, Rhino. His special play is the "nose dozer," where you give Rhino the ball and let him slowly gain momentum while opposing players try to tackle him. Lastly, there are the Bears. And I don't mean the kind from Chicago.

The beginning high school scenes and the anti-climactic final section are not as thrilling as the heart of the book, but that won't deter young readers. Trust me when I say that there's less "rash" and more "dash" to this book -- as in, the dash of a fullback heading upfield for a touchdown while an opposing prison football team gives pursuit. If you're a boy who likes football, check this book out. If you're a parent or teacher of a boy who likes football (but not reading so much), check this book out FOR him. You (and he) won't be disappointed.

Hautman's Godless remains one of my favorite teen books, and this one is almost as good. Like many other great science fiction novels, this is social commentary in disguise: Hautman conjures up a sinister future world that has taken some of our current obsessions to extremes, yielding nightmarish results. While I usually think the age recommendations for fiction are too low, the recommendation for this one is too high: middle schoolers will enjoy this book too.

Bo Marsten is living in the tail end of this century in the "USSA", a place where beer and french fries are outlawed, a good percent of the population is on a Ritalin-like drug, sports can only be played with maximum protective clothing, and manual labor is performed by people arrested for "rage" crimes. Bo's speech and action will seem like a normal teen's to the reader, but he winds up incarcerated for fighting with a classmate over a girl (using his fists, not weapons). He is placed in a work camp run by McDonald's and set in the frigid wilds of Canada. Like "Holes," the wardens are corrupt, the other inmates aggressive, and the environment punishing. Bo manages to become part of an elite group of boys who play football, the old-fashioned kind that is outlawed in the rest of the country. Meanwhile, an A1 program that Bo created in school has mutated and acquired a "life" of its own. The creation, called a web ghost, may just be able to spring Bo from his sentence early.

The book is an original, thought-provoking read. Just a decade ago, kids didn't wear bicycle helmets; could mandatory law be possible in the future? The only flaw is that apart from Bo and the A1, there is minimal character development. In "Holes" the relationship between Stanley and Zero helped give Stanley's character more depth. I also wanted more backstory on Bo. Had he really always had a bad temper, or did it develop when he became a teenager? Did the government/school do other things besides prescribe meds for people who were potential discipline problems?
How did he deal with his father leaving the first time? But I guess those questions were outside the scope of the book.

This is a good introduction to the New York Jets. I consider myself a big fan of the Jets and I really enjoyed the book. It's not loaded with to much information and statistics that would bore someone who is not a die-hard football fan. Easy reading with some interesting information on some of the Jets biggest names, new and old. Also talks about fans, owners, the AFC and NFL.

I love the Jets

This is the best sports book to come out ever. Usually I find these books boring, or uninteresting, but this book is completely different. It was a great book, and once i started reading i couldnt put it down. I suggest this book to everyone, even if you usually dont like sports books. This book is different, and amazing.

Tales from the Panthers Sideline is a must-read for Panthers fans! This book is filled with funny and fascinating behind-the-scenes stories, and includes recaps of electrifying Panther moments on the field. I laughed out loud often while reading; and nodded my head and said, "cool", many times... If you have a short attention span, as I do, you'll appreciate that the book is broken up into short stories, so you can skip around without losing continuity.

I got this book for christmas, and it didnt take me long to find out this was my favorite present. After reading just a few stories, I was hooked. I am a HUGE Jake Delhomme fan, and i even have my own website ( www.cajunpride.cjb.net ). And if you love Jake Delhomme, Steve Smith, or any of the fabulous cardiac cats, you'll LOVE this book. Scott Fowler tells some of the funniest stories you'll ever read in here, and tells everything about the Panthers from the very beginning to the Superbowl last year. Every panther fan should have this book, and it's well worth the money.

A true behind-the-scenes look

As a die-hard Panthers fan and Jake Delhomme fan living in Canada, I knew I had to have this book. I wasn't disappointed after reading it in one sitting - I couldn't put it down.

Fowler's writing style is perfect for conversations over beer and wings with other football fans - Fowler shares short bursts of inside information all organized neatly into sections about either your favourite player or historical season through to last year's Superbowl trip... perfect for sharing "did you know" stories with your football buddies, Panther fans or not.

The stories are amusing (three words... Delhomme. Karaoke. Hilarious...), insightful (just who IS Steve Smith), unprecedented (the story behind THAT Rams game) and even humbling (detailing Sam Mills' and Mark Fields' bouts with cancer).

This book is a must-have for Panther fans and fans of any team will enjoy it too. It is a true behind-the-scenes look into the players you've grown to love every Sunday and I highly recommend this book.

It's like you were on the Sideline with the Panthers!!

When I read Scott Fowler's book, Tales From The
Carolina Panthers Sideline, I felt like I was pacing the sideline with the Panthers. Fowler was able to take me to the sidelines and locker room of this exciting and mercurial
team. I have been a faithful reader of Scott Fowler's columns over the years in The Charlotte Observer newspaper and felt certain my personal time devoted to reading this book would
be time well spent, and it was. I feel as though I now know the players, coaches and owner in a way the average fan wishes they could. The journey through the storied 2003-2004 season which
took the Panthers to an appearance in the Super Bowl has been captured by Scott Fowler in such a way that any Panthers fan will want to relive the ride again and again. And with Tales From The Carolina Panthers Sideline, they can. This is a must have for any football fan -- and especially Panther fans!! Enjoy!!

Ever since my son was about five years old, his love of football was apparent to all who knew him. His talent in the sport sparked the interest of many colleges. Touchdown provided my son with the tools necessary to understand and navigate through the recruiting process with ease. Thanks to the help of Touchdown, my son is currently starting at Ohio State and loving every minute of it.

If you play football or know someone who does, then this book is for you. It will teach you all you need to know to play on the best college teams and help you decide if you have what it takes to make it to the pros. This book will also help parents of high school ball players, too. Although my opinion will be biased, as Ed Locker is my son, I truly believe if you love the game of football, then you will enjoy reading this book.

For someone who had no prior knowledge of the recruiting process, Ed's book was a real treat. It was especially helpful having a professional like Jurevicius add his commentary. The only suggestion I have is to include a picture of the author inside the back cover so the public can see the genius that put this work together.

The College Decision made Easier

Ed Locker has made the world of college football that much easier to navigate. In an age of corupt recruiting practices and broken promises, this book helps high school kids make the right decisions concerning what colleges to attend to play football, and how to go about catching the attention of those schools they want to be recruited by. I should know, I am a scholarship player at the University of Notre Dame because of Mr. Locker's book. Thank you Eddie!
