This book is an extremely comprehensive collection of LSU Tiger Football history. I have had it for months and have just begun to scratch the surface. Anyone who ever played for the Tigers up until the publication year is listed in this book, along with the years and positions that they played. In addition, there are amazing facts and stories recorded here. Finney does a fine job of capturing the spirit of LSU Football. This ain't light reading, however as most people know, most Tiger fans don't do anything lightly.

Touchdown!

Hey, if Dan Marino was at first and goal, wouldn't a touchdown be sure to follow. My kids loved this book. It was extremely entertaining, and they thought the pictures were awesome. First & Goal is a different type of children's sports book in that, instead of just being a synopsis of his fine career, it teaches a more underlying lesson of giving it (anything) your all. The writing is quite good in that a nice, easy, descriptive language is used, making it entertaining for children of all ages. This is a good book, and you children are sure to love as much as mine did.

Sometimes there's more to life than just being a football player. Sometimes we have to tackle more difficult situations than just playing a game with a piece of pigskin.

Matt Hill is excited to be a part of his football team but he has found himself in some sticky situations. Off the field, he has to try and build a relationship with his father who has suddenly appeared after ten years of being absent in his life. Matt also is trying to be the best friend and teammate to Ricky who is dealing with a father who gives him too much attention but the right kind of attention. Which is worse -- having a dad who was gone and came back or having a dad who is too aggressive? Should both boys look to Coach Reynolds as a role model when dealing with father issues? He's a man, will that help?

"First and Ten" will certainly score a touchdown for football fans and young readers, ages 8-12. We all have to make decisions both on and off the field. Jeff Rud will score many points with young readers who enjoy a good book about one of their favorite sports. This is a very well-written story with good lessons in succeeding on and off the field. I hope Jeff Rud has already kicked off his next book in this series, its one you won't want to miss!

An absolute riot!

This book had me rolling in my chair! I'm a football fan (now a converted Charger fan) and the events recounted here bring back a lot of memories. Gene Klein was a masterful storyteller. His descriptions of such characters as Al Davis, Leonard Tose, Dan Fouts, and Rolf Benirschke are dead-on. Just as interesting, in my opinion, is his recounting of his life and career before he bought the San Diego Chargers, and after he sold them (he turned to breeding race horses, one of whom, Tank's Prospect, won the 1986 Preakness Stakes). His recounting of his days in the used car ("cheaper by the pound than hamburger!"), film theater and insurance businesses paints a vivid picture of what it was like in post-World War II southern California, when opportunity was waiting with open arms for those willing to take a chance. He is not above recounting his mistakes, such as the time when he backed Minnie Pearl's Fried Chicken (a franchise named after the Grand Ole Opry legend), but when he sat down to take his first sampling of it, he developed HEARTBURN. And there was the time when, trelying on the advice of his son, he passed up on the American concert rights to THE BEATLES.

THE BOOK THAT GOT ME STARTED WITH COACHING

The flip-flop offense in high school football by Pete Dyer is about the wing-T offense. A single wing misdirection offense.

It is full of Pictures, drills, techniques, diagrams, and a step by step guide on how to play every position. It is easy to read and well written. You will not get lost trying to read this book even if your football knowledge is limited.

All coaches can benefit from this book from Youth Leagues to High School. This book has been out of print for many years so if you can get it buy it. IT IS A STEAL AT ANY PRICE!

It is a good book from youth level to college level.

Flo Jo and the Funny Suits
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2000-11-22
(3 elementary students: ...): It's a very interesting book. It tells about Flo Jo's one-legged suits and her unique personal style. It inspires people never to give up on something you love a lot. There were times when Flo Jo was worried she wouldn't be able to compete, but somehow she perservered through the difficult times. In this book you will find out that Flo Jo made many new world records in running. (We don't understand how she could sign autographs with her six-inch long fingernails!!) Flo Jo wasn't allowed to run in the hand off relay because her fingernails were too long. In the end, the the coaches let her keep them (the second time). We would recommend this book for people who are looking for a good biography and love running. We think the reading level for this book is appropriate for grades 3 and up, or as a Read Aloud for grades 2 and up.
