Excellent product to encourage math practice

I bought this for my 9 year old son who is only in third grade. He gets good grades in math, but hates it. This product made learning math fun for him and he has spent alot of time even in the car doing problems in this book. It is a lot of fun for him. I plan to order him this year after year as they come out with new ones. Some of the problems of course are difficult for the little ones, so I would like to see them come out with one that is grade specific and not 4 - 8, but overall we were very pleased with the product and it did everythign we had hoped it would do to encourage our son to explore math.

This is the best book on officiating that I have ever read. The book goes into great detail to cover all aspects of the game and pregame duties. The 4 and 5 man details have been very helpful in explaining situations in our training classes. I recommend this book to everyone from rookies to veterans.

Zenith for Zebras

Jeffrey Stern probably does not realize he has "done himself in" by writing this ultimate guidebook for football officials: It so completely and clearly covers every aspect of officiating that I fear it will render most other publications, including his own, practically obsolete. It will undoubtedly prove a particularly welcome addition to the bookshelves of rookie zebras in smaller countries, like ours, where American football is scarcely out of the egg, and but very few officials can pride themselves upon more than fice years experience. In addition to being the best guidebook in its field I've ever come across, there shimmers, throughout its 290 well illustrated pages, Jeffrey's (and his co-writers') love for football, giving this work a human touch, and making it a very readable document. dblajan@iae.nl

This book is a necessity for the new football season. I haven't found any other resource that shows so clearly and simply all the new rule changes for both high school and college. And it shows every case where there is a difference between the codes, so if you are ever in doubt, it sia simple matter of flipping a few pages. I would recommend this book to football officials of any level for before and during the season reference.

Year after year, this is the book that gets me prepared for the new football season. It is so easy to read and informative on all the new NFHS and NCAA rule changes for the new season that I share it with my crew to make sure they are as prepared as I am. And for those of you who officiate both codes, it presents every case in which the rules differ, so you will never get mixed up. It is a great resource for officials of every level.

football

Football rules by Don Shiffer was very informational. It taught me all about the rules of football. Did you know that you can tackle someone by the helmet and no penalty will be asessed? Another interesting fact I learned was that lineman could lock legs so that defenders could not get through.
My favorite sport to play and to watch is football. It has so strategy and mental thinking as well as physical contact. To me the game of football is 50% physical and 50% psycological. In this book it told me all about the referee signals used to call a penalty. This book was very helpful in telling me teqniques and strategies about every position in the game. The position I play is wide reciever and an interesting fact I learned was when a defender and the reciever caught the ball at the same time it was a complete pass! I think when you understand a game better you tend to do better. This book was well thought out and organized in a good fashion and that is why I think it was a effective learning tool.

Football Scouting Methods
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2007-04-29
This book caused quite a stir back in 2004 or 2005 when it was mentioned in the media. The author is Steve Belichick the father of Brian Belichick the head coach of the New England Patriots. Steve was a noted scout and coach in his own right back several decades ago. This book was one of the first that I know of that attempted to codify some of the thinking and thought processes that go into scouting football.

Originally teams were allowed a certain number of visits in order to scout the opposition. Steve Belichick was a master at this skill and always found small ways to give his teams an advantage. His skills were passed onto his son Bill who developed an even keener eye for scouting opponents tendencies, strengths, and weaknesses.

Today teams of course exchange game film and study that content instead of exchanging visits. The basic things they watch for however are still the same although the exact formations and play types change every decade of course. None the less the original questions and points of study that are outlined in this book were influential in their hey day and still of relevance today in concept.

Since the media mentioned this book it has become a hard to find commodity and has become something of a collectors item. I have an old copy that I keep in my football library. The schemes and diagrams are somewhat outdated (e.g. no more wide tackle six alignments) but the basic thought process is still relevant even today.

Reading this book will give you a good sense of the details that coaches zero in on and what Steve probably taught Bill as a young man many years ago.

Thomas Owens' Football Stadiums will delight any football fan and will reach beyond its intended advanced elementary-grade level into adult readers, surveying the building of stadiums and the underlying influences on their locations and operations. While the subject may not lend to classroom study, leisure readers with a passion for the sport will find this compelling, packed with detail.
