In 1992, Dave Branon of Sports Spectrum joined with Joe Pellegrino to present Christian role models in baseball. Now Branon and Packer Ken Ruettgers give us a role model in football, a sport in desperate need of same. When the bad boys get all the ink, we all need to look beyond that to the behavior and character of players like Ruettgers. Branon - we're waiting for the good guys of basketball. The mainstream media don't even try to hide their rolling eyes and smug boredom when Christian players praise The Lord. Get over it, media, and ask yourselves why you're disturbed at a player who kneels in the end zone to thank his Lord rather than break into a dance of self-glorification.Bit by bit, book by book, the good guys are gaining. For more on the Branon touch, try a subscription to his magazine, Sports Spectrum. It's a whole new world out there, sports fans, a world where the Minister of Defense is in the pulpit

Chad Hennings is a man of commitment and a man of God. In his book, Hennings stresses the importance of commitment and shows how his life time commitment to hard work has landed him in the National Football League. This is a wonderful book that is interesting and easy to read.

Chad's book has inspired many people who look to him as a role model. His book reflects on how important a good moral and religious foundation is to the development of a true winning spirit, whether on the field or off. Small town Iowa does not afford you many chances. But Chad set his sights on his dream, figured out what it took to acheive them and then took action, while keeping his foundation in the Lord. Chad continues to remember where he came from, and has not let his position in the NFL cloud who he really is, and what is important in his life.

Chad Hennings speaks from the heart - the heart of a godly man. Life has many things in store - highs as high as winning the Superbowl and lows as low as seeing your child wrought in crippling pain. Yet through everything, there is one constant - Jesus Christ is always there for you and everyone who calls on his name. Chad is an awesome individual - not for his football abilities, but for his commitment to Jesus Christ and his family.

I met Chad Hennings last year at a local grocery store. He greeted my wife and me with kindness and sincerity. His heart and committment are as strong as his grip. It Takes Committment is a wonderful book. Chad talks about the level of committment needed in devotion to family, working with teammates, and certainly not least, submitting to God. Amidst the Dallas Cowboys' tumultuous times as of recent is Chad Hennings, a rock of honor and example. His comments are sorely needed, not just in football, but in today's culture in general. The book is easily readable for all ages, and brims with honesty and love. I agree with Emmitt Smith's foreword: This book was written by a man of God and needs to be read by every American adult and youth. You won't be disappointed

As I write this, football great Jim Brown's autobiography, OUT OF BOUNDS, is out of print. While I have not ready every autobiography or sports bio, I can't imagine one more engrossing than the Cleveland Brown's OUT OF BOUNDS. Two reasons: 1)It's the story of possibly the best football player to date, in his own words. 2)Jim Brown's own words are dead honest. If you think he's kidding about anything you read in OUT OF BOUNDS, I'd like to see you tell him to his face. Don't give up the search to find OUT OF BOUNDS!

This book was an excellent biography abput sports legend Jim
Brown. He covers his outstanding football career at Syracuse
University. He is also able to give adequate coverage to his
outstanding career as a professional football player. He covers the women who have been a part of his life. He also discusses the football coaches that he dealt with during his football
career. Brown also openly discusses his role in many social issues of the time. He is still even today a hero to many Americans. This book gives an outstanding coverage of his life.
You will not be dissapointed. Buy it.

Read this 4 or 5 years ago, but I can still remember things JB mentioned. This is easily the best sports bio I've read. Usually these things are complete fluff, but JB is a man of substance and he speaks out with intelligence and experience on a number of things (race relations, gangs, etc.) In many ways he is the anti-OJ; he has never gone out of his way to fit in with whites while turning his back on the meanstreets. Rather, he has dedicated much of his life to helping young blacks improve themselves and get out of the gangster life. He does a lot of honorable things, that's why it saddens me when I hear about his repeated run ins w/the law for beating his wife/girlfriend. In any case, this book gives great insight into the complex mind of the greatest football player to ever play the game.

This book was found by me through a recommendation off this sight. Shawn Fury captures the perseverance provided by coaches and players in trying to achieve "victory" on the field and in life itself. I devour books about sports every year; however, I find this literary work to be one of the better ones I have read. To feel the emotions of these players and coaches fighting a constant state of adversity is admired. The book needs to be publicized more, because it is an extremely interesting and well written book.

Let us pray...
Shawn Fury's Keeping the Faith, a fantastic account of a college football team's woes and whines, its victories and values will have you caught up in the characters quicker than a five-yard slant pattern.
While Odessa, Texas glitters beneath Friday Night Lights, Trinity Bible College in Ellendale, North Dakota prepares for what will probably be another merciless clubbing by an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference opponent. Challenged by "method-to-the-madness" coaching, "AWOL footballs," and a losing streak as long as the North Dakota horizon, the Lions' football program is a recipe for disaster of epic proportions.
But, hallelujah, like Noah trusting God to save him from the Great Flood, the Lions have some semblance of faith, a sense that some good will come from simply staying on board with the program. Encouraged by the team's small (and expanding, thanks to Shawn Fury) fan base, which has the patience of Job, the Lions just may win a game-or at least a shred of dignity-even if it's against a struggling Christian Scientist team.
Buy the book, today. Amen!

"Moral victories amidst defeat"

As a resident of Ellendale, ND, the home of the college football team that's been ranked 697th out of 697 for years, I can attest that the picture painted in "Keeping the Faith" is so accurate, it's frightening.
Most sports novels focus on a team's rise to championships or the heartache after losing the big game. This takes the opposite perspective, looking at the team that's struggling to score 30 points a season, let alone win a championship, and the only victories they can find are the "moral victories." Yet somehow, in a season in which every single player on the team suffered an injury, each game averaging a 0-50 loss, they manage to keep fighting and trying their hardest despite.
Highly recommended.

This is more than a book about football - it is a character study. It tells the in-week struggle of the Trinity Bible College football team, as well as their struggles on Saturdays. The author does an excellent job of telling the players stories; their lives away from the game as well as some of their inner conflicts. I would highly recommend this book to anyone.

5 undefeated season. For any sports team that hard to accomplish. For the Kennisaw Knights it would be the second time in the school history. Can the Kennisaw Knights do it?
Star of the team Hampton Green started playing football as a young kid. His best friend Blaine Keller and his father got him into football. Ever since they started playing together they dreamed of playing for the Kennisaw Knights there hometown high school football team. Now their time has come. Every Friday night they walk onto the field with the team just like they dreamed of years ago, but this year is more special then they could have ever imagined. They are playing for a fifth straight undefeated season. This has only been done once before in the schools history. They get to a great start by winning there first game, but some conflicts arise. Blaine doesn't approve of the girl Hampton is trying to date. Blaine also begins to get a "large head". He believes that he is the best at everything and whatever he says goes. When Blaines hip begins to bother him and it affects his performance on the field, he starts to get agitated. With all the drama off the field and the legacy they are trying to live up to, can the Kinnisaw Knights go down in history?
Why should anyone want to read this? First, the book is extremely action packed. There is never a dull moment when sports action or off the field drama isn't happening. Secondly, the story is a pretty fast read. There aren't any concepts that take time to think about and the wording is not hard to understand. Even thought the book is over 200 pages, with all the action you dont really want to put the book down. Lastly, this book can appeal to just about anyone who likes football. The main parts of the book are about football so if you dont like football I wouldn't suggest reading it.
In conclusion this book is filled with action, both football action and everyday high school drama. It keeps your interest very well as there is never a dull moment and you are always wanting more. So if your into football and want to read a good book check it out.

What is this world coming to? Two football stories worth my talking about in the same year? What is next -- me out there barbecuing tofu at a tailgate party?
Back when Hampton Green was nine years old, his father abandoned the family. Hampton and his mom had moved downstate to a modest rental in Kennisaw, Oklahoma. Mom landed a job in a store and, in the ensuing years, has gone through a series of boyfriends. During those years she has never been there emotionally for Hampton.
Hampton's salvation since moving to Kennisaw had been his long friendship with Blaine Keller. A generation ago Blaine's dad had been part of the Kennisaw Knights high school football team that went undefeated for five straight years. Blaine and his dad taught Hampton the game of football and now the two friends are seniors and stars on this generation's miracle Knights team, aiming at completing their own fifth undefeated season to match that legendary streak of the past.
But Blaine has been trying to hide from the adults how badly his knee was injured in a game at the end of the previous season. It becomes painfully clear to us that the increasingly bitter Blaine Keller -- with his unforgiving father on his back -- is not going to achieve the greatness beyond high school that he's got all his chips riding on. Meanwhile, the big, redheaded, six foot-four Hampton is only getting better as he continues to develop his unmatched intuitive sense of the game.
Unfortunately, Hampton doesn't have the same intuitive sense when it comes to school assignments or to talking with girls. But on the plus side, despite being in the position to ride Blaine's coattails and consort with the most popular girls at school, Hampton has developed a quiet admiration for a shy yet articulate girl with baggy clothes named Sara Reynolds whom, thanks to her wild hair, the popular kids scathingly refer to as Bush Girl.
It is Sara who has some important things to teach Hampton.
"Darnell didn't see how nobody with an ounce of brains could fight for the Confederates and Lana said she had ancestors that was on the South's side and they was fighting for a way of life and old-fashion family values.
"Darnell turned over to me. 'Can you believe this girl, Hamp? You explain it to her. I'm wore out.'
" 'I don't know that much about it,' I said. looking down. Last thing I wanted to do was get balled up in a controversy. As good of a fighter as I was on the football field, I hated a argument in civilian life. Darnell was my best friend after Blaine and he was black, so I wasn't about to take the South's side, but I didn't want to hurt Lana's feelings neither. Besides, I didn't know but what Sara might have some relatives from the South somewheres along the line too.
"Darnell threw up his hands. 'How about you Sara? You're smart. Let me ask you. Was slavery wrong?'
" 'Of course,' she said.
" 'Well, then, let me ask you another thing. What reason could anyone have for fighting on a side that wants to own slaves?'
"Sara was quiet for a moment, her long lashes shading down over her eyes. 'Well,' she said finally, 'I guess a lot of folks want to be part of a side so much they just go along with what their side says is right.'
" 'Even when it's really wrong,' Darnell threw in.
" 'That's just it,' Sara said. 'Some people don't know who they really are themselves, so how are they going to know what they think is right or wrong?'"
One of the seminal themes in young adult literature involves adolescent characters learning to speak, and to speak up, as they create their own voices and identities. Hampton's innocence and blind loyalty to Blaine have totally impeded his ability to develop that individual identity and voice, but with the end of high school in sight we are rooting loudly for this big, goodhearted Oklahoma kid with his "durns," "done alreadys," and folksy metaphors, to heed Sara's lessons and become his own person.

In the beginning Hampton goes along with all of the stupid things his best friend does out without thinking, blindly following him down any path (even the road to ruin.) When Sarah a bright girl outside his circle questions his behavior, he takes a long hard look at himself. Ham concludes that while loyalty to a friend is vital, he must be true to himself. He has to make decisions to be the person he wants to become. The story takes place in high school; there is some drinking, reckless driving, petting (nothing terribly graphic), "guy talk." I will give it to my 12 year old to read with a few words of caution. While it is a tad grown up for a 6th grader, the lessons to be learned are germane.

My friends might be surprised that I read a book that wasn't a fantasy, let alone a sports book, but good writing transcends genre and subject matter, and Knights of the Hill Country is very good writing. The best thing about this book is narrator Hampton Green's voice, which gives a whole new meaning to that overused expression, "pitch-perfect." I was just wondering this morning if I was a little too harsh in a couple of recent reviews, and then I read this book and felt justified by the difference in quality! Talk about a dimensional character--teenage football player Hampton is SUCH a real and unique person, his voice colored by a regional tone which simply adds to the story telling.
Hampton plays football on a virtually unbeatable high school team because his best friend Blaine and Blaine's father have taught him to play hard and well. Over the years, Hampton has relied heavily on those relationships, with his own father gone and his mother largely unavailable. But during Hampton's senior year, he finds himself becoming aware of a disconnect between his vision of the world and Blaine's outlook on life. Hampton thinks of himself as slow, but he's starting to realize that it's not because he's stupid; instead, he mulls things over. Unlike Blaine, Hampton has trouble expressing his thoughts on the spot.
Hampton gradually becomes disillusioned with being a follower, particularly Blaine's follower. The fact that Hampton has turned out to be a very good football player, while Blaine is held back by an untreated knee injury, is one reason for the conflict--a frustrated and envious Blaine puts a strain on Hampton's straightforward loyalty with his increasingly irrational demands. Among other things, Blaine tries to put a stop to Hampton's interest in a girl Blaine feels isn't sufficiently popular and good-looking. But Hampton's relationship with Sara helps him to think in new ways and break Blaine's hold over him. Hampton wisely realizes that he can love football and play to win without neglecting other possibilities and joys in life.
All of this growth is shown in the context of Hampton and Blaine's activities at school, on dates, and especially during football games. The sports scenes are particularly well written, given greater meaning by Hampton's take on the game. (I like how Hampton ruefully contrasts his ability to make exactly the right moves in football with his inability to say the right things in social settings.)
The book's pivotal moment shows that Hampton's deep loyalty to Blaine can move him to do something which, while it infuriates Blaine, saves Blaine from himself. In a very satisfying evolution, seemingly passive Hampton becomes the action-taker--and we realize that his integrity has given his "still waters" choices increasing power, in contrast to Blaine's frenetically petty mistakes. I highly recommend Knights of the Hill Country. When I updated my program's library, I didn't find very many excellent sports-centered YA novels, but this one definitely earns a place on that shelf.

One of my all-time "must-have" inside-the-game books, right up there with FOUL about Connie Hawkins, MAD DUCKS AND BEARS is nothing short of brilliant... insightful for its look beneath the gridiron turf of the NFL, and asthma-inducing hilarious when author Plympton wisely turns large chunks of the book over to narratives by John Gordy and, to a larger extent, the great Alex Karras, a very droll fellow.
In the mid-'70s, this book used to accompany my sight-impaired college roommate and myself on our annual treks around the country to visit other old chums from school, and in the evenings, I would read and re-read passages aloud to him... Gordy's thoughts while lying on the turf of Yankee Stadium with a dislocated shoulder, Karras' recollections of his first days off an Indiana farm at the University of Iowa under coaching legend Forrest Evashevski, and his adoption in training camp as a scared rookie by hard-drinking Lions' team leader Bobby Layne... as we would roar ourselves to sleep.
Delighted to see this wonderful volume reprinted! Long overdue.

George Plimpton wants to write a book about the techniques offensive and defensive lineman. The Mad Duck (Alex Karras) and The Bear (John Gordy) will be used for research. Their first meeting for the book places the author, George, in down lineman position in the apartment of one of the men as they hammer him into lamps and such. From there the book takes off on the minds of Karras and Gordy. It is filled with absolute laugh out loud hilarity. The book finishes with Plimpton at Quarterback, but this time for the World Champion Baltimore Colts. Insights to hall of famers Johnny Unitas and Bubba Smith are must reading for football historians. (Smith at a party trying to teach a myna bird his name, "Bubba, Bubba, Bubba"). One also gets introduced to Bob Irsay who dismantles the team. It is a hint of things to come----a move to Indianapolis.
One of Plimpton's best

This book is excellent for an authentic glimpse into the 1960s NFL. It is also very funny and extremely well written. Alex Karras is an eccentric character who provides a barrel of laughter with his off the wall sense of humor. Plimpton, unkowingly, plays the perfect straight man for karras's bizzare antics.
My only complaint about this book is that it was such an enjoyable read, I wish there were many more pages.

Over 25 years after reading this for the first time, I still remember some of the more hilarious moments: Alex Karras's golf tournament, with the shrieks of wild animals echoing from the woods; Joe Schmidt's basement full of horrible recordings of the Detroit Lions singing The Battle Hymn of the Republic (not to mention the unsold vibrators); Bobby Layne sending Karras out for burgers then abandoning the frightened rookie. Interspersed among the laughs are some wonderful tutorials on the art of football where it really matters--in the trenches with the hogs. Offensive guard John Gordy and defensive tackle Alex Karras, two of the greatest ever to play the game, explain the nearly invisible game of blocking and tackling. This is a sort of cult book for true fans of football and great writing. Come join our congregation!

Football is unlike most other sports in that you cannot figure out how the game is played just by watching it. At least I never could. When I first began watching football a few years ago, I was puzzled by more than a few aspects of the game. I picked up a copy of this book, and all of my questions were answered! The author, Linda Wong, is the mother of NFL linebacker Kailee Wong (formerly of the Minnesota Vikings, currently with the Houston Texans). Linda and Kailee Wong have recognized that a lot of women know very little about football and therefore cannot enjoy it. They have written this book specifically to address this problem. Most of the book is written by Linda Wong. It is organized in a very simple and straightforward fashion. There are chapters on the Basics, Scoring Points, Offensive Players, Defensive Players, Special Teams, and Common Penalties. Everything you need to know to understand what is going on during a football game is in there. The author's style is clear, concise and pleasant. She has also interspersed some entertaining personal anecdotes on her own experiences in learning about football throughout the text. Although the book's intended audience is women who have no idea why their friends/husbands/ boyfriends get so excited over a football game, this is really a terrific introduction to football that will allow anyone who lacks a background in football to understand and enjoy watching the sport. Football is fun to watch if you understand what's going on! I swear! I'm something of an NFL addict at this point. So if your friends spend Sundays glued to the television for 5 months of the year, don't even try to beat them -get this book and join'em!

This is an easy comprehensive and comprehensible "Hoyle" for football at all levels for moms, dads, and everyone else. It answers basic and not-so-basic questions. The "Oops!" anecdotes are funny. The input from NFL players is interesting. The diagrams of officials' signals could be real handy if John Madden and Dennis Miller are ever struck mute and incapable of telling us what's going on.
It's a dandy Super little book.

There are hundreds of thousands of people who enjoy the game of football. Whether you have played the game at sometime in your life, think you know the game or are clueless about the game, this easy to read and understand book should be a part of every football fan's library. The Wongs' only mistake was thinking that women would be their target audience. NOT SO! It's clearly written for men, women and young adults---anyone who wants to learn about the game or to increase their knowledge of the game of football.
It's a 5 star all the way!

Mom's Pocket Guide To Watching Football is an easy reading book for women of all ages. Once you start to read it, you won't be able to put the book down. The interesting stories about the lives of a mother and son's point of view makes the book enjoyable. The quotes from real professional player's make it easy to learn what their positions are all about, and how excited they are to be in those positions. The way the author explains all aspects of the game including penalties, tips and final thoughts makes understanding the game of football easier. I recommend this book to men, women and kids of all ages who want to have more understanding of the game called football.

Neither of these words fully capture how great Eddie Robinson is... as a coach, father, or American. He is such a great role model for EVERYONE. He talks about wanting to make a difference in the lives of youth, but his story will make all types of people (hopefully) realize how fortunate they really are.. make them appreciate the country we live in, give them the strength to choose the high-road (choose to love the person that hurts you instead of getting mad or even). I can't even explain the feeling of respect and admiration I feel for this man.. he is so humble, so forgiving, so strong in his faith of people..
Eddie Robinson should be more well known than he is.

I'm a big fan of football, so of course i wanted to read, this book about Grambling's great coach. i'm a big fan of grambling except of course when they play Jackson state, or Alcorn. After reading the book, i found Eddie Robinson, to be a wonderful person who cared so much for his team, and his coaches. I felt bad for robinson when i read that a divison 1 school never even contacted him about a job, but what I liked best of all about this book, was he and his wife's Doris love for one another.

Eddie Robinson is truly one of the greatest pioneers in the history of athletics. The way he transformed a football program at a little known (if not unknown at the time) black college in the piney woods of north Louisiana, into a program of both national and international notoriety, is a true testament to his greatness. It is amazing to see what this man has overcome and how he has perservered throughout his 56-year coaching stint. With 408 victories under his belt, he is the all-time winningest coach in college football history at any level. He taught his players how to be champions both on and off the field. As a Grambling State University alumnus, and former Grambling Sports Broadcaster, I was fortunate to witness, first hand, what a class act Coach Robinson is. He transcends the word "committment". This autobiography takes you on a journey of overcoming obstacles on the road to success. I highly recommend this book to everyone, not just athletes, who want to understand what it means to perservere!

The Official NFL 1998 Record and Fact Book continues to be the best available NFL stats book. This edition provides great rundowns and scoring stats for every game played by every team during the 1997 season.
There is also a 4-page section on each team with coaching histories, individual and team records, draft choices, and coaches bios.
This 1998 edition includes a complete schedule for the 1998 season. This schedule is spread out over 6 1/2 pages with plenty of space for me to write in the game scores and miscellaneous notes. And it includes a worksheet to determine each team's opponents for the 1999 season.
Workman Publishing puts this book out each summer, and the 1998 edition is my fourth one. If you're serious about your NFL facts, then this book should be on your shelf!

Good, even handed account of what life is like as a walk-on football player. One TV color announcer calls walk-ons "the finest pepople in the world" and you get a sense of that. Kennedy is a dedicated hard working guy by all accounts and he goes through the ups and downs. Interesting with the backdrop of the University of Wisconsin Badgers rise from doormat to contender to winner of the Big 10 title and under dog Rose Bowl victor.

Forgetting that I am a Badger Fan, this is a terrific sports book. Besides being well written and entertaining, the story is fascinating.A young man goes to college, walks on a Big Ten team, stays for four years, and basically never plays! Why? That is the crux of the story and why I reccommend this book.

I just finished reading "No bed of Roses" and found it thoroughly entertaining. As a fan, I attended many of the games in Mr. Kennedy's career during the rebirth of Badger Football and it was fun to relive that period from a totally different perspective. The authors dedication and perseverence to the program during that time need to be applauded. I think this should be required reading for incoming student athletes, walk-ons and scholorship athletes alike, regardless of the sport. If you could fill a team with Chris Kennedys, you may never lose a game.

"No Bed Of Roses: My Sideline View Of The Wisconsin Badgers' Return To Greatness" is the extraordinary memoir of Chris Kennedy, whose four years with the University of Wisconsin Badgers football team saw the evolution from mediocrity to Rose Bowl glory under the legendary college football coach Barry Alvarez. Kennedy candidly shares his behind-the-scenes accounts of his thrills and frustrations as a college athlete. A unique and fascinating perspective rarely available to Badger team fans, "No Bed Of Roses" is as informative as it is entertaining -- and very highly recommended for personal reading lists and every Wisconsin community library collection.
