'Top of the Key' is truly inspiring. I recommend this wonderful tale of a young girl's journey to the 'top' to not only young adults (age 7-17)--but, because this book is a great read for motivational and women's educational purposes, 'Top of the Key' is not a book reserved only for children/young adults, but a book than can ALSO be enjoyed by those of us who may be 'grown' now, and would like a nice little pick-me-up down memory lane...'Top of the Key' serves as a reminder that we once dreamed and aspired, and still dream and aspire. A reminder that one is never too old to dream or be inspired (and follow through with them). 'Top of the Key' is an encouragement to take control of our destiny by faithfully following our heart. EXCELLENT read. Vocabulary is at an elevated level for young readers age 7-14, which is great for broadening their personal dictionary. I'm 23, and I can't stress enough how truly inspirational this book has been for me on a personal level.

What a great idea! And what a polished way of presenting both facts and opinions!
Bill May has done an excellent job of gathering and organizing information about Indiana high school basketball. Nowhere else can a fan or sportswriter find so much basketball tournament history in one place and presented so clearly. Sportswriters decades from now will be relying upon May's work. In addition to this factual material, the reader will also get opinions about the state of basketball today from a man who obviously knows and cares about the game.
That's the solid main course at this basketball banquet, but it's the dessert that makes the meal complete. The dessert here is the collection of anecdotes that May presents in a down-to-earth, Hoosier style. When you read this section of the book you'll think that the writer is sitting beside you and rolling out story after story of basketball history.

Frightening premise, a young man turned into a donkey and shuttled around the hemisphere as chattel of religious cults gone wrong!
This modernized version of The Golden As* of Apuleius is hilarious and touching.
A wild mixture of magic, sex, marijuana, travel and adventure. His ship borne gastronomical excesses alone are worth the price of the book.
"Apuleyo returned in the early afternoon. Any doubts I had about our ability to communicate in Spanish were obliterated by what he held in his hands. Not only did he bring me my original order but he produced a side dish of delicately fluted curried Dungeness crab tacos garnished with small braised vegetables and sauteed morels resting in a bed of eggplant topped with lemon-basil-garlic sauce. I tried to mind my manners and not just scoop everything up like a brainless poofing fish sucking in algae. But I did. Scoop it up, that is. "Te Gusto?" (Did you like it?) Apuleyo asked. Did I like it? I actually felt stoned and I swayed to the sea with my eyes closed. Slowly, slowly I recovered from the pleasure of being bombed with such acute flavors." -pg. 110
Dex Quire's first novel is a tour de force, I'm hoping they'll make a movie out of this.
Kudos, Dex.

A Lost History of Pro Basketball and Society

This is a compelling book on how it can be argued that the Harlem Globetrotters saved professional basketball in its growing years. The lost history of the pivotal contest where the Globetrotters defeated the juggernaut Minneapolis Lakers is woven between the societal and sports history of the times. For example, readers will find out that many fans would flock to arenas to watch the Globetrotters play in the first game of doubleheaders and leave before the start of the "main event," but the players still suffered tremendously due to the unbalanced playing field in life and race relations. And many times there was no solace found in the competitions. The book is a must for a person who wants to explore the history of pro basketball and/or how sports has at times favorably impacted race relations.
