Part of the Hello Reader Series, this Level 1 book features a popular and energetic girl, who we see in a typical gym class, playing along with her classmates. Her physical disability is not mentioned and she plays a small part in the book but it shows inclusion very well.

Collaboratively compiled and co-edited by Leigh Klein, Matt Masiero and Kevin Pigott, Five-Star Basketball Coaches' Playbook compiles successful and innovative basketball plays from a wide variety of the coaches who have made Five-Star Basketball one of the most respected basketball camps in the world. Each play is explicitly spelled out with simple diagrams, a quick statement of purpose, by-the-numbers steps for organization, plus some hot tips for enhancement. A glossary of terms rounds out this useful reference for anyone involved in coaching basketball in youth leagues, high school, or college. Highly recommended.

An angry boy becomes a mature young adult
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-08-06
Les Beach is a tough kid from the wrong section of town. His greatest problem is the fiery temper and willingness to fight that is so much a part of kids in Shantytown. However, he has four tremendous assets, he is a superb basketball player, he is a natural floor leader, he is very intelligent and there are many people willing to do extra things to help him. As the story opens, he is working at a grocery store after school in order to help his unemployed single parent father. Basketball season is about to start and while he was kicked off the team for attitude problems last year, he desperately wants to go out.
He finally gets the courage and humility together to ask Coach Raines for another chance. The chance is given and this begins a season with many ups and downs. He starts becoming involved with the daughter of a doctor and he begins to see life in different ways. His persecution complex begins to fade and he learns team play and the value of loyalty and friendship. In the final game of the sectional championship, Les is hurt but plays incredible basketball, leading his team to victory.
The action is intense, as an angry boy slowly becomes a mature young adult. This book is about pride, loyalty, perseverance, dedication, and the belief in a lofty goal. Many people help Les behind the scenes as they recognize that he has more talents than those he demonstrates on the basketball court. This is one of Carson's most significant books.

THE Book For Armchair Basketball General Managers

Cameron Stauth actually followed the Detroit Pistons around for two championship years, and it appears he didn't even get in their way!

Instead of focusing on the drama of any one game, The Franchise follows the Pistons through their ups and downs over more than one season. From the draft rounds to the heartbreaking playoff losses, this book shows that running an NBA team is about much more than dribbling and shooting.

This book is excellent for anyone with even moderate knowledge of the game of basketball. It includes several colorfully written characters, such as a (somewhat milder) Dennis Rodman, years before he became a Chicago Bull. The only reason I don't give this book a '10' is because it isn't for everyone. Most fans are interested in the story behind the game, but some aren't.

Stauth also writes like a sports reporter, not a novelist. He details everything that goes on behind the scenes that fans never see. The many phone calls and callbacks that may or may not lead to a trade for a draft pick or a supporting player. The panicked decisions to find players to fill out the bench when a star goes down. He really does on excellent job of presenting the coach's and the GM's perspective: that NBA basketball isn't just about the superstars, it's about getting fans in the seats, giving them a good time, and using the money to put a COMPLETE and COOPERATIVE team on the court.

This is a great series. My daughter is 7.5, a really good reader & is very sports minded compared to other girls her age. She is not interested at all in the girly girl books made for girls her age. This is a great way to keep her engaged in reading in our Christian household.

Great basketball book

Pallette has written a smashing, detailed, well written slamdunk of a book about an almost forgotten giant of basketball. The young Italian kid from San Francisco rose to the heights as the finest player of his generation. The book explains in fascinating detail his rise to fame, and includes amazing play by play accounts of many of the games, pieced together from many newspaper accounts at the time. Besides being a brilliant piece of research, it is a fast paced book to read. If you love basketball, you will love this book.
