Where as other books on hitting are complicated and unecessarily deep, this book simplifies the mechanics of the baseball swing in an easy to read, easy to follow manner. A great buy and an amazing value.

This book really is great. I played little league baseball when I was a child, but unfortunately my Junior High School didn't have a baseball team so I got out of it and by Senior High School the pitches had too much velocity and movement so I couldn't make a team. Recently I've decided to play in an amateur adult league and am trying to get ready so I ordered this book. I still have the fundamentals of my swing (foot positioning, hand positioning, leading foot 'kick', and swing path) which this book covers, but this book also has great tips and drills for hitting inside pitches, outside pitches, and, of course, middle-of-the-plate pitches. It has great physical conditioning tips especially the forearm workout (it sounds easy, but it will 'burn' your arms). It even has mental conditioning tips for concentration. The book is quite short, but is concise and to the point and well worth the $14.00. The best part is that Shawn May (the author) himself will analyze your swing for $25.00 and will even return your video tape if you include a SASE.

Being such a die-hard Astros fan, this book was a must-have for me. Once I started reading it I just couldn't stop! It brought back floods of memories from games I had been to and watched on TV, and I felt as if I was living every moment again. I really enjoyed this book, and I think every Astros fan should own it!!!

I can't give this book enough credit!! When I was younger I used to write to sports stars all the time, always using the addresses from these books (I had all four). I now have numerous autographs......Steve Young, Cam Neely, Brian McBride, Eddie Belfour, Mike Modano, Jeff Gordon, and many more. They are all real! It is so great..... for people looking to buy the books, I recommend using the team addresses in the back of the book but putting a name at the top instead of the team name. The addresses in the book just go to fan clubs, but if you send it to the team they will give it to the players!!! Anyways, enjoy the book. It's awesome!

Excellent juvenile non-fiction book for sports fans!!!

This book is incredible informational and fact-filled for young kids who are interested in writing to their favorite athletes in search of autographs. I have found from my personal experience that if you are polite enough in your requesting an autograph from an athlete through the mail, that they will usually respond in a positive manner, although occasionally it does take quite a long time to get a response from the athletes.

I may be a bit biased in my recommendation of this book, as my wife was the editor on the project a few years back during an internship she had while in college, and the author was one of my good friends from college. So Dylan and Inga... WAY TO GO!!! Thanks for giving kids such an informative and valuable resource for trying to get in touch with their sports heroes!!!

This book does a superb job analyzing the psychology and motivations of the various types of Yankee fans. You will howl at the spot-on depictions of the many kinds of fans that flock to Yankee Stadium year after year with the same pomposity that was almost appropriate when they actually were a championship team. Highly recommended.

John Tullius' "I'd Rather Be a Yankee" follows in the footsteps of Donald Honig's "Baseball When the Grass was Real" and Lawrence Ritter's "The Glory of Their Times" by letting the players "write" the book through the reporting of their great stories and reminiscences. Tullius combines his research with previous works to provide the reader with some great insight about these terrific Yankee teams and players. All the Yankee greats from the first 3/4th's of the 20th Century are featured in this fast-paced and intriquing book. Ruth, Gehrig, Dimaggio, Berra, Stengel, Mantle and Jackson are all prominently featured.

And while, "I'd Rather Be a Yankee" probably won't "play" in Beantown, it will be warmly embraced in the Big Apple and by all Yankee fans.

Let Them Tell The Story

I've loved this book since I was a child. As far as Yankee history goes, it gives us the skeletal framework of the story, dispersed through the book at the beginnings of each chapter. However, the real reason this book is such a gem, is that the majority of it is told through the quotes of the people who lived through the events they describe. Some of these quotes are taken from previously published material, and therein are gathered some of Yankee Baseball's most memorable and bone chilling quips and one-liners. But in addition to those are stories told to the author himself, as he travelled the country, seeking to preserve the tales these men were burning to tell. Simply wonderful.

If you do not know about this book you should read it. It is about a girl who is very bad at baceball and she was traded for a girl named Marcie and a pizza.I think it is funny because Marcie does not know apparently anything about baseball. If you like this Peanuts book read more--they're all great!

This book is impeccable.

I like this book. It is very weird and also very funny. I laughed more with Lucy, because she brought a trolley at the baseball game, so that the ball could get very easy in.Congratulations to the publisher.

This book is highly recommended for any Dodger fan. The people who remember the Brooklyn Dodgers will enjoy seeing and reading about Ebbets Field and Gil, Pee Wee, Jackie, Campy, Duke, Oisk, Skoonj, Uncle Robbie and the rest. Newer Dodger fans get to see Sandy, Big D, Maury, Fernando and Steve Garvey along with Eric Gagne.

As a long time Dodger baseball fan (over 50 years), I found the book very informative, intereting reading, and sprinkled with good photos. Great book for any Dodger fan. The book does a good job in a chronilogical order of telling the story of the organization - players, management, and owners. There were many tidbits that I learned new or did not remember until reading the book.

Bix certainly is "in a pickle." A star baseball pitcher who is left on his own at age 17, he is stymied at every turn with his several efforts at surviving on his own, from physical attack to rigid bureaucracy. The interdependence of the members of the team on the baseball field evolves into friendship and problem solving off of the field, as the story develops in some unexpected ways. Well past Bix's age, the story not only got my attention, but kept it throughout the book. It was a good read for me and I think it would be a good read for young readers of either sex.

THE INDEPENDENT CAROLINA BASEBALL LEAGUE... is a masterpiece of regional history. Sure, it's about baseball and the almost religious nature of its practice during this time and place. But there is so much more in the details about social structure , convention and the fine line between the public and private.

Utley and Verner were quite diligent with their research. The collection of photos and the league statistics corroborate the many anecdotes and colorful player profiles. The linear narrative is perfect and puts some rails under what might have otherwise been a haphazard assembly of good yarns. I highly recommend this book to anyone who cares about baseball, the pioneer spirit, and well-documented history.

A great read for baseball fans and non-fans alike.

This is a wonderful book. Not only is it a story of baseball, but it is a story of the Depression-era South and life in the textile mill towns of North Carolina. Incredibly well researched and full of great photographs, this book will appeal to anyone with an interest in history even if they are not a baseball fan. As a baseball book it relates the great stories and legendary expoits of small town heroes from the Golden Era of the sport. As a social history it shows how textile mills were the lifeblood of dozens of small towns, a part of Southern life that is all to often forgotten today.

This book hits on all cylinders. Few thought Long could possibly top his classic rookie effort, "Browns Memories," but once again, Long has stunned readers with his literary prowess. "Indians Memories" is truly a masterpiece-- and Long-- a legend in the making.
