My book was about a group of kids from a rural neiborhood. They loved to play baseball and even started their own club. The club consisted of all the players that were on the team. They were all best friends.
The team faced a problem however. Their arch rivals were a team from right across town. The two teams were pretty much evenly matched. However, the other team had a pitcher that was extraordinary. They called him "Bull," for the fact that his fastball came charging in like a bull. He was unbeatable. Ever since he moved into the town, the other tea, was undefeated. It's been real tough.
Then this new kid moved into town. He's calm, strong, and afraid of something. He doesn't play baseball because of an accident that happened a long time ago, keeping it a secret from the players of the town. He's sort of like a ghost.
The kids were able to get a baseball game together in the town park on the day of a festival. All the memebers of the community would be there to watch them play. They would have to be extra well to be able to beat the other team. (...)
I would recommend this book to another person who likes to read humurous baseball stories. It is a fun-filled adventure, and full of excitment. The story was a great book and easy to read.

This book is EXACTLY how I remember Summer! It's SO GOOD!

I had this book for a long time and I never read it. And I sat down to read it a couple of days ago and it's so good! The characters are great, from the Roader's leader Shooter, the mysterious Cinderella Kid to Games... the character that reminds me of myself. When I bought this book it was easy to find. Even though it's out of print you've got to find this book! It's really, REALLY good!

It's a new baseball season and the Champs have new uniforms and new determination - even if they did finish last in the series last season. But when Wombat wanders onto the field on opening day, the Champs are in for a big surprise - and younger readers will wind Lynn Munsinger's drawings hilarious and engaging in this story of a wombat's participation. Lester L. Laminack's JAKE'S 100TH DAY OF SCHOOL receives Judy Love's drawings and tells of the surprises being planned for the 100th day of school. Jake's planning on showing off his big project of 100 photos - but when the day arrives he rushes out without his project. Can he participate when he's forgotten the best idea of all? Kids in grades 3-4 will relate to the story and will applaud the surprise ending.

"THE" BOOK FOR YOUR LITTLE LEAGUER
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2001-07-13
I've bought quite a few baseball books the past four years. My 9 year old son picked this one out himself. This author logically dispels many myths, i.e., "Tight grip on the bat!" (no, tight grip on the bat equals tight muscles all over - not a good thing) "Level Swing!" (no, the ball is delivered by the pitcher well above the pitcher's head and the ball is aimed down toward the catcher's mitt, so it is more efficient for the batter to have a slight up-swing). The chapter on bunting (such a lost art) is the best I've ever read. There are some very excellent drills in this book - our favorite is taking batting practice while sitting in a chair (this is geared toward working on wrists and arm movement during batter's swing). This is a VERY fun book that parents can enjoy with their young ball player. My son has improved 100% since taking lessons from this book. This book is a homerun!!!

Outstanding! For young to old.

This book is replete with outstanding basics for the young hitter. Constant reassurance and positive phrases abound throughout the book. Drills accent the most basic of fundamentals and progress into the necessary skills needed for the high school player to be successful. Fantastic photographs of Ken Griffey, Jr. and Alex Rodriguez emphasize the key points of instruction. Simply put, this baseball instructional book is in a class above most.

This book designed primarily for youth wanting to be successful in the game of baseaball, also has an added benefit. The instruction included in Be A Hitter! can also be applied to everyday circumstances in many ways. Zabriskie uses terms such as practice, patience and perseverence in his words of advice and encouragement to the players. But more than just wanting to win every time, is the emphasis on being the best you can be and pictorial guides and examples of how to achieve this. He goes on to say if you are the best you can be, then you are a winner.

The book has lots of positive personal experiences and real-life stories. The author is a former professional ball player and sports broadcaster...he speaks from great experience. I highly recommend Be A Hitter! for all youth playing the game of baseball.

Best book on hitting for young players I've ever read!

I've been looking for a way to help young players with their hitting. Be A Hitter! is the best book I have found. It spells out the basic fundamentals in very easy to understand terms and each point is perfectly illustrated with demonstration photos. The book also has an inspiring tone as Zabriskie speaks to the mental approach good hitters need to have. He also encourages readers to be the best they can be and shows them how to achieve that goal. The photos of some of the greatest Major League hitters of all time are also a plus. I have already seen positive results in youngsters who have read Be A Hitter! and applied the principles. It's a great book for youth, parents and coaches.

Amazing stories of exceptional athletes' lives

Review Date: 2003-07-02
I was amazed at reading this book, I felt as though I was in the moment with these extreme atheletes as they were participating in their sports. The way the authors Gutman and Frederick integrated the stories of these incredible athletes into a montage of life and death escapades, was absolutely wonderful. I mean, I thought these guys were just crazy people, but they're not. They are articulate and thoughtful individuals that know as much as one could know within their craft. Excellent read, I totally recommend this book if you have a passion for reading exciting stories.

Extremely Informative

Review Date: 2003-01-22
Most books about high risk, adventure sports seem to focus on a single individual adventure. For this reason, Being Extreme was not only a pleasant surprise, but a highly informative book that gathers athletes from a number of these often death-defying pursuits under one roof to talk about their lives and their sports. To learn about sports such as BASE jumping, sky diving, big wave surfing, freestyle motocross, freestyle skiing and snowboarding, and mountain climbing into the "death zone" was both interesting and compelling. It was made even more fascinating by having the thrills and dangers of each sport described by the athletes themselves. The authors allow the reader to see these athletes as real people who seemingly have a different perspective on life than most of us. The book gets into the "why" of these sports and athletes many times over and will give readers a total understanding of the men and women who put their lives on the line every time they climb, jump, surf, or take up a new challenge. This is a book about sports that are increasing in popularity and one I would highly recommend for both its style and substance.

THIS BOOK IS A COLLECTION OF STORIES ABOUT THE TOP 30 GAMES IN THE HISTORY OF BASEBALL (THE OPINION OF THE AUTHOR). I FOUND THE STORIES TO BE VERY WELL WRITTEN AND GAVE US THE CIRCUMSTANCES AND DETAILS LEADING TO EACH IMPORTANT GAME. HIS CHOICES OF GAMES ARE DEBATABLE BUT MOST ARE ON THE MONEY. A MUST FOR ALL FANS AND HISTORIANS OF THE GRAND OLD GAME. THE AUTHOR, JOHN MCCOLLISTER DOES A VERY GOOD JOB AND DESERVES CREDIT FOR PUTTING OUT AN ENTERTANING READ.

Excellent Baseball Almanac

Review Date: 2006-08-19
This book has become a mainstay at my house, and a favorite of my family's as a reference tool. It's not as in-depth as Total Baseball or the ESPN Baseball Encyclopedia, but it gives quick summaries of Hall-of-Famers careers, great pennant races, important games from history, and also lists award winners, record holders, and seasonal batting and pitching leaders. The portability of this book makes it much easier to bring to games or to have near the TV.

A great resource, and well-written.

Rube Foster-what an amazing man! Dr. Robert Cottrell's impeccably researched biography gives us insight into the evolution of an outstanding athlete, coach, manager, businessman, visionary, and co-founder of the Negro Leagues. In this book, we not only get a detailed look into the day-to-day life of a ballplayer (complete with box scores-balls, strikes, hits, walks, stolen bases, and outstanding plays). More importantly, we see the panorama of black ball (and white ball) in the early part of the 20th century as we barnstorm the country and Cuba with Rube and his various teams and teammates. This biography joins the pantheon of other works by Dr. Cottrell. In his earlier biographies of I.F. Stone, Nicholas Comfort, and Roger Baldwin, we saw sensitive yet balanced looks at strong-willed men in conflict with oppressive conservatism and prejudice in the areas of journalism, religion, and social injustice. Now, we are treated to the same spirited view of our nation's pastime and one of its unsung heroes. This book about Rube Foster provides us nothing less than a much needed revisionist's look at American history.

I just recently read the book "Between the Lines" and I was very pleased with how easy the book was to read as well as the content in the book. The author is very detailed about everything that is in the book, so you do not have to be a sports psychologist to understand the material. One of my favorite topics the author covered was the difference between a "Hit" and a "Quality at Bat." This topic was something I never thought of until now, but made so much sense. I have been a softball player for over 15 years and I am now starting to get involved with coaching and I would say this book is a MUST read for both players and coaches.

An excellent supplemental resource for softball players

Written by college softball coach Yasmin Mossadeghi and sport psychology expert and softball coach Patricia Laguna, Ph.D., Between the Lines: The Mental Skills of Hitting for Softball is a no-nonsense guide to the nuances of softball batting. Chapters cover how to face a dominant or nondominant pitcher, practical skills for mental drill rehearsal, how to adjust to the role of designated hitter, and much more. Black-and-white photographs illustrate this point-by-point, in-depth guide. An excellent supplemental resource for softball players, recommended for high school libraries and the personal bookshelves of any dedicated softball athlete.
