A User Friendly Guide to Online Reputation Management

Review Date: 2008-09-29
Radically Transparent is a well written, entertaining, well researched guide with many real life examples. This is a book that provides you with the tools, and specific guidance on how to use these tools. Every professional and business should have knowledge of these tools, although many may not fully recognise the importance or impact the new world of Web 2.0 may be having on their business. This guide should be read a number of times, although, it is written in such a way that you can easily skip to specific areas of interest. There is a lot in it but you can pick off one strategy at a time, explore it, implement it and of course, monitor it. Definitely provides the rationale for strategic business involvement in the social networking world.

A triumph. With an agile and engaging prose, Andy Beal and Judy Strauss reveal how to promote, maintain and (if necessary) repair individuals and companies' online reputations based upon the principles of transparency and honesty.

Choke-full with practical advice and relevant case studies, this book achieves its self-imposed objectives with flair. The referent in search engine reputation management (SERM) and online reputation management (ORM).

Great Primer for Government Communicators

Review Date: 2008-06-19
It's been my experience that while politicians have been quick to capitalize on the power of online reputation management, most of the governments that they lead have failed to grasp the possibilities. Concerned about negative comments, the potential for embarrassment, and media scrutiny, many local governments have avoided social media altogether.

Strauss and Beal make the case for why no one can afford to ignore the potential for engagement and the real dialog afforded by social media. And for those who can't fully implement their suggestions organizationally, the book is rich in advice for managing your personal reputation online.

Corporate Handbook for Social Media Optimization and Reputation Management

Review Date: 2008-05-15
The book was written by Andy Beal from Marketing Pilgrim and Judy Strauss.

Andy Beal is a SEO and fellow blogger who specialized in social media optimization, reputation management and public relations. He is like Kris Jones a frequent speaker at search marketing conference, such as Search Marketing Expo, Search Engine Strategies and WebmasterWorld's PubCon.

As the subtitle states, his book is primarily about monitoring and managing of your personal, your professional or your company's reputation online where it focuses heavily on using search engine optimization and marketing techniques as tools to accomplish your goals.

It also provides advice and recommendations for how to approach the social media space as a business in order to reduce the risks and possible problems that will arise, if you jump into this area of marketing without being prepared and ready for it.

The power of social media and the benefits your customers and your company can get out from it are a reward that is worth the risks. Yes, it has risks and it is impossible to eliminate all of them, but that does not mean that it cannot be done. Just eliminate the risks that you can eliminate and be prepared for the things that can happen and impossible to prevent for sure.

A Turn By Turn Map To Social Media Effectiveness In Your Business

Review Date: 2008-05-14
What I love about this book is the way it is laid out in a step by step process that leads you from confusion to clarity in the use of social media in business today. Be aware, this is not a book about blogging even though they discuss is a lot, it is a book about all social media and the precise steps you can take to begin and continue influential conversations that can change the face of your business.

The book lays out a clear path for becoming transparent in your business and leverages really good examples to demonstate how it has been done effectively . . . and points out the pitfalls and traps that exist if you don't follow a sound process.

You'll literally go through this book chapter by chapter and implement it one step at a time and to that extent the book will keep you busy for quite a while.

My only criticism is that I wish it had an addendum to cover the very latest technologies and talk about implementing those, so I'm hoping for a quick follow on book. Groundswell did fill some gaps but this book is much more usable for businesses that want to implement the technology and create the conversations themselves.

Excellent book for understanding social media. A must read.

Excellent introduction to an emerging phenomenon...

The first book by Gina Lynn, SexRev 2.0 is an amazing look at the many possibilities of sexuality with the tools of the modern world. Her prose style is very easy to read. Her writing is to the point and direct, as is her attitude toward sex and relationships. This book is a very good introduction to the new technology of this century, and how it can be used to enhance your love life. After reading Gina's column for some time, it is nice to hear her 'voice' in a longer narrative context. I love the fact that you can look at her writing and say to yourself "I know she is speaking from experience."

A Truly Revolutionary Look at Sex in the Digital Age
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2006-10-01
Regina Lynn's book starts with an interesting and believable thesis ... that a new technology (the internet) has caused as much of a change in contemporary sexual patterns and practices as another new technology (the pill and other means of effective birth control) did a generation earlier.

As the Sex/Tech editor for Wired Magazine (in itself a respected distribution point for information about things new and technical), Ms. Lynn is in an almost unique position to keep up with the latest in this field. She brings much of this expertise to bear in this book.

With chapters dealing with everything from meeting people on line to women's access to pornography, she covers many aspects of the intersection of these two domains ... one ancient and one as modern as can be. Computers make possible powerful searches, which can bring people "together" who probably never could have met by chance in an earlier era. And women who would rather die than get caught sneaking down to Sam's Smut Shack to buy a dirty book from some pimply-faced clerk who went to school with their son can (and, the evidence suggests, do) go on line and download reading and viewing materials that suit their intersts.

She goes on to deal with things like sex toys, breaking up in the internet age, and a whole host of other issues.

But in the end, the end is (as Ms. Lynn says, optimistically, at the end of her book) much the same as the beginning:

"The future of sex is just that: sex, only better.
"Dig it."

There is no doubt that sex and tech are forever linked in our world and Regina Lynn's Sex Rev 2.0 is an entertaining, educational, and provocatively personal account of where these two fundamental forces in our lives currently stand. Regina does a marvelous job guiding the reader through the complexities, not only explaining the technology involved, but also the do's and don'ts to bring this material into your real life in a positive, healthy, and exciting way! In these times of extreme sexual oppression in this country, Regina should be recognized as sexual freedom fighter. I can't wait to see what version 3.0 has in store for us.

A sane approach to sex online
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2006-10-04
Regina Lynn does what so few manage to do: explain the basics about online sexuality without throwing her readers into a panic. Lynn provides a landscape of some of the ways that the Internet can *enhance* one's sexuality and sex life while most other books instill fear about this phenomenon in the average person. Sure, people become addicted to cybersex; people also become addicted to Twinkies. But most people are able to eat their Hostess products in moderation. And most people who choose to engage in online sexual activities -- or at least explore their options -- will do so to improve an in-person relationship, or use it to explore an aspect of their sexual identity they want to "try on" in a safer environment. Lynn writes with the notion that most people are simply curious about sex and the Internet as she paves the way for people to learn how the virtual world can improve their romances ans sex lives in the physical one. And she educates with compassion, humor, and savvy.

Key points in plain English

I really enjoyed this book. It was straight forward, to the point and provided some great best practices as solutions to some common security problems. A major problem with security is management. Too often the people making the important decisions do not understand the information that they are given.

As the authors point out, Managers and technical staff speak different languages and that is the key problem here. Managers that read this book will gain a clear understanding of the problems that the IT staff faces, and IT people that read this book will understand the management side and will know how to speak to non-technical staff.

This book is a perfect introduction to security and related business concerns.

Great overview, a lot of food for thought

This is a really good introduction to security for non-technical and IT personnel. It covers a lot of subject matter including disaster planning, and writing a security policy. This book is an excellent resource for managers who need a clue. It is written better, more organized and more helpful than "Secrets and Lies" and other similar books. I recommend this book for anyone that needs a good overview of security. You may not be a CISSP after you finish it but you will understand what a CISSP is saying.

This book is a great overview of security and policy development. This is not a technical book, it does not teach you the specifics of any particular OS, or how to configure software. It does ask key questions, and gets you thinking about security programs and business practices. The policy template is an added bonus. I gave this book to my manager to help convince her that we needed to look at security differently and budget for it.

This book is a great starter book on information security! I was wading though my copy grumbling "I know this, this, this...", when it occurred to me that I am not the intended audience.

For some time, one of my friends was asking me for a good book on security for somebody who knows absolutely nothing about it. I gave him "Access Denied" - and now he is hooked. Several weeks has passed by and he is already asking for "Hacking Exposed"...

"Access Denied" covers a wide range of security-related topics. The book is well written, logically organized and have everything to appeal to the beginners in the security field, those curious about modern (if not cutting edge) security topics and those migrating to security from other IT fields.

Anton Chuvakin, Ph.D., GCIA, GCIH is a Senior Security Analyst with a major information security company. His areas of infosec expertise include intrusion detection, UNIX security, forensics, honeypots, etc. In his spare time, he maintains his security portal info-secure.org

I received a copy of Larry's book. Not wanting to decline a gift, I did mention that I wasn't in sales or marketing and might not be interested in a book on business. "Read it", I was told. "It's funny".

I did and it is! And I got an insight into how things are sold and marketed in this new digital age. What to the professional maybe common knowledge was an eye-opener to the un-initiated. I now have a better idea as to why some web sights are better, easier and friendlier to use than others.

"Mommy" is delivered in an irreverent, clipped, K.I.S.S style that has the reader laughing and thinking at the same time. He is full of it. Knowledge that is! This book should be a must read for anyone in business today, and required reading for anyone with an interest in knowing how e-marketplace works.

I have high expectations for this book based on the first 10 pages. The introductory sections have some of the funniest stuff I've ever seen in a business book. Plus, it's the first time that I've seen an author make an open appeal for Amazon reviews--a move that drips with savvy and is an especially good sign given the topic.

I've already gained a new catch phrase: "Screw that! Let's see you do any better!" (page 6)

I'll be back with another review ...

Websites 101 for Business
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-10
Read this book before you develop a website. Most small businesses lack the finances to hire a true web expert when they first build a website. That's ok if you read this book first. Armed with the knowledge of this book you will be able to go to your web designer and say "This is how I want it" and "No, don't do that" with authority.

Larry rockets through the essential area of website development with short chapters written in an irreverent style. Subjects covered are: website design, web strategy, search engine optimization, website functionality, website analytics, email marketing, and choosing a website programmer. It has the most understandable explanation on how search engines work that I have ever read. Everything is written on a non-technical level so that you can understand the concepts.

Larry writes that he hopes you find at least one practical solution in reading this book. In truth you will take away several. You will have several "aha' moments. If you already have a website, you will read something and say..."I need to get that fixed."

The only thing lacking from this book is a little more depth. Larry gives you a great surface overview and several useful ideas. But because the book is written concisely it's a little short on what to do next. Maybe that can be Larry's next book.

I highly recommend this book for small business owners getting ready to develop a website. Read this book before you spend the money on a website. If you already have one, read this book so you know what you need to go back and fix.

Sam Richter's Book, "Take the Cold out of Cold Calling" is exactly what he says it is...a tool to help the reader find enough information to actually make the call a warm, informed call. There is no reason to be nervous when you feel you have a reason to call...and that makes the call warm.

I tried many of his tips on getting information quicker and they all worked! I actually researched a company that I was calling on, found the most recent press release, which revealed that my current contact had RETIRED!!!! It pays to do your research to avoid looking stupid.

I couldn't put it down...I received it as a gift from a friend and fellow consultant. You have nailed the challenge, precisely and relevantly. I have translated the book to apply it to my work, Healthcare (largely hospital) marketing...and while Revolution Health goes a long way towards all you recommend, we providers need to run, not walk, to keep pace. Transparency driven by third parties who take our data and compare it to others, coupled with a more knowledgable and demanding purchaser (aging boomers), followed by a growing number of wired new users (who's having babies and raising young families..)...the tools and ideas you generate are EXACTLY what we need to consider as we try to reach these key audiences.

Thanks for the exercise!!!!

This book was a good read. It did not set my world on fire because over the past year or so I've been reading quite a few marketing books on how to incorporate blogs, comment sites, and social networks into the marketing plan of a business plan. In a way, it's just another of the many books that are flooding the book market regarding Internet marketing.

The book is sweet, though. It's pretty to look at. It's well outlined and well written. And, oh, the pictures of the author I have spotted on her Amazon profile, LinkedIn profile, and her book's own Web site and blog indicate she is a knockout appearance-wise. The best parts of this book in my humble opinion are the real-world examples about how to open meaningful interactions with potential customers.

The book points out well that traditional marketing involved the following approach: static, publish, inform, link, sell, and control. And now the marketing or Internet marketing approach involves live, interact, engage, tag, socialize, and collaborate. The new approach seems to take much more time from the marketer's perspective than the old approach. But the new approach costs so much less than the old approach. And the new approach is proving to be so much more effective.

The target audience for this book supposedly is marketers, communications experts, CEOs, and business owners. I highly recommend each of these people get a copy of this book to either learn something about Internet marketing done the right way, or to reinformce what they already know (or think they know) about Internet marketing. 5 stars!

"Defending the Brand" is the definitive work in the field of protecting your brand presence on the Internet. I have read several books on Internet Security, site hijacking, and other problems of the Internet and even hold a security certification. I am not aware of any other book on the market today that explains so well the problems of malicious hackers and pranksters and how quickly they can destroy your brand name. The book is full of example after example of real-life problems that others have faced and solid advice on how to handle each of the various situations. Of course, it also has sound, positive steps you can take to help protect your brand from problems to begin with. Author Brian Murray doesn't give basic advice that is supposed to fit every situation but helps the reader to determine what factors make a situation warrant action, which ones are better off left alone, which ones might require legal action, and which ones trying to get a legal letter so they can further defame your brand name. Every business with an Internet presence should have a copy of this book. Using the Internet it is now possible to lose many years of positive customer relations in a matter of just a few days. You are responsible for knowing how to protect your company and yourself and this book will open your eyes.

I knew that we had to closely monitor the use and licensing of our brand in the off-line world but this book opened my eyes to the on-line marketplace. There is nothing more valuable than our companies reputation and as a result of the great examples given, I've changed the way our digital marketing group operates with the Internet. Thanks Brian for this valuable contribution to preserving our shareholders investment.

Just a decade ago, defending your brand essentially meant ensuring that sidewalk vendors weren't hawking knockoffs of your goods. That has changed drastically with the explosive growth of the Internet, which has revolutionized retailing, but has also made it easier for thieves to hawk counterfeit product.

Leading brands are finding the Internet to be a perfect vehicle for reaching out to their existing customers and finding new customers. The flip side is that for every Internet marketing method there exists a nefarious online activity that exploits the power and goodwill of established brands. For example, rumors and fictitious product information can hurt companies' brands.

Never before have companies faced such a siege on their intellectual property and brands, so the publication of Defending the Brand is timely. In a fascinating depiction of today's threats, the book explains in lay terms how an organization can develop a strategy to fight brand thieves.

The eleven chapters are replete with real-world examples of how companies such as Home Depot and Disney have struggled to protect their brands online. The author furnishes effective advice on how companies can better deal with situations ranging from digital brand abuse to illegal distribution. At 250 pages, Defending the Brand is a quick and fascinating read.

If there was one book I would suggest to anyone venturing into the waters of eBay, it'd end up being this one... eBay: The Missing Manual by Nancy Conner. This one covers it all.

Contents:
Part 1 - Buying on eBay: Ready, Set, Shop!; Bidding, Paying, and Following Up; Finding - and Getting - Bargains; Power Buying Strategies
Part 2 - Selling on eBay: Sell Stuff, Make Money; Honing Your Competitive Edge; Going from Hobby to Business; Specialty Selling; Cool Tools for Sellers
Part 3 - Finding Other eBayers and Getting Help; Finding Help
Part 4 - Appendixes: Where to Learn More; HTML for eBayers; Other Auction Sites; Index

Like all other eBay books, this one covers how to buy and sell on eBay. The writing's good, but there'd be nothing special if it stopped there. Where this book earns its keep is when it goes into areas I haven't seen covered in any other book. I've never seen a book go into any detail on other resources to learn about eBay, such as call-in internet radio shows and newsletters. I've never seen a book cover HTML in a small number of pages in order to allow the seller to create better auction pages. There's good coverage on third-party sites that give you more information on how to best price your auctions. There's even material on how to evolve from buying and selling as a hobby to running a business based on eBay. Package all this up with clear writing and numerous screen shots, and you really *have* found the missing eBay manual.

To paraphrase eBay's latest ad campaign... "Whatever you're looking for, you'll find *it* in eBay: The Missing Manual"...

It is both for beginners and beyond.

A good introduction, but probably due for an update

This is a great starter book for anyone curious about buying or selling on eBay. My only issue is that the book could probably use a refreshing. eBay is a very dynamic property and this book was probably written at least a year ago.

AS A FRENCH RADIOLOGIC TECHNOLOGIST, I WANT YOU TO FORGIVE MY ENGLISH, BUT BOTH THE ATLAS AND GUIDES ARE NECESSARY FOR ANY RADIOLOGIC SERVICE. IT'S A REFERENCE, AND EVEN IF YOU CAN'T READ ENGLISH PERFECTLY YOU CAN REFER TO THEM (ANATOMIC DESCRIPTION, PHOTOGRAPHY OF RADIOLOGIC POSITION AND RESULTS WITH COMMENTARY). MY GUIDE IS IN THE ROOM WHERE I'M WORKINK EVERY MINUTE, BECAUSE IT CONTENTS NOW ALL INFORMATIONS NEEDED AND ADAPTED FOR EACH POSITION AND EACH X-RAY TUBE. THEY HAVE TO BE IN EVERY SCHOOL. WAITING FOR THE FRENCH VERSION AND AN INTERACTIVE CDROM.

IMPRESSIVE!

We began using this text this fall and have been very impressed with the quality of the anataomy sections and the radiographs are all excellent. The color makes it much easier to learn radiography. It is also very comprehensive. Students can learn many projections and not just the basics. We especially like the Mobile chapter which is very practical and accurate in its approach. The Workbook by Hayes which accompanies the Atlas is also excellent. We can use the 3-volumes for 7 different courses in our school and that makes this text a bargain overall. Our students also began using the accompanying Pocket Guide which they much prefer over the one they were using previously because of the AEC write-in ability. This whole package is excellent for radiography students.

It is easy to see why this textbook has made it to its 50th anniversary edition. The authors have introduced all the latest techniques, including computed radiography. The color throughout is wonderful. This is not only a great student textbook, but a great book for reference purposes. We continue to use this book for 5 different courses in our program and we continue to love it. Thanks for the color !
