The Shortest Path to Understanding Copyright Issues

If you'd rather spend most of your time on your creative work rather than wade through the government's articles and circulars on copyright issues, I can't recommend this book enough. Getting Permission not only addresses common misunderstandings about copyright issues, but it provides clear instructions for getting permission if in fact you need to. Before I purchased this book, I was under the impression that you always had to request permission, but that isn't the case. This is one of the most valuable references you can own if the topic of copyright seems overwhelming, and I highly recommend that you read it before creating your masterpiece.

Regardless of whether you use the Internet or do traditional publishing work, you need to know how to get permission to use the work of others. On the Internet this increasingly important in view of the issues surrounding deep linking and related challenges in a world where a simple HTML tag to someone else's work can bring legal problems. This book provides expert guidance that covers how to obtain permission, copyright research, what constitutes fair use, and how to legally use trademarks.

The book also clarifies the definition of "public domain" and what needs to be in a license agreement.

What makes this book especially valuable is that it comes with 32 forms that range from standard photo use and test use permission to linking agreements, interview releases, art for hire and more.

I can't add much to the other reviews for this book, but I would like to add my two cents...

This book does an excellent job of describing when permission is necessary for copyright and trademark issues, and give sample agreements to obtain the necessary consents. The book is very clearly and intelligently written and gives readers a very good sense of when permissions are necessary from a legal perspective or highly advisable from a practical point of view (very different issues).

So many other books talk about how to protect your own intellectual property, or how you can get into trouble if you use someone else's material.

This is the ONLY book I've found that tells you how to go about using someone else's material legally. Its step-by-step approach makes it very straightforward, and eliminates the mystery about what to do and what to expect.

This has helped me obtain a merchandise license agreement to print and market posters of an author/artist I admire and enjoy. I would NOT have known where to start without this book (or finding a high-priced copyright attorney). I still use an attorney, but just to review a contract which I already understand on my own.

Where else could you find this information? Simply Great!

If you want to use copyrighted material for your own purposes, you need to get permission from the owners first. If you don't, you could find yourself stuck in a costly lawsuit. This book, Getting Permission, shows you how to get through the permissions process. This guide is very readable and will give you a basic introduction to the permissions process, the public domain or free stuff, how to figure out and find someone who owns a copyright, what constitutes fair use, how to get academic permissions, license and merchandise agreements, what a trademark is and how to use them, how to use a fictional character, website permissions, as well as forms and a CD rom. The book covers information on music, photos, text, characters, and much more. Nolo also gives helpful suggestions as to where to go for more information on a specific topic. I found that this guide was a great introduction to getting permission for just about anything. This book will be a wonderful resource guide for years because the information contained therein is easy to understand and reliable.

This is a must-have for any Grace Kelly fan, and as such it's a shame that it has gone out of print. Conant was a close friend of Grace, and his loyalty to her, as well as his appreciation of her beauty and grace, is evident in this collection of photos, many of which have never been published elsewhere. Conant provides glimpses into Grace's acting career, her personal life, and her life as Princess Grace of Monaco, all with a respectful, dignified, and talented eye. There is no sensationalism here, only pure Grace. I highly recommend tracking down a copy.

This stunning large full color picture book keeps Grace alive, by showing her early days as an actress, her wedding to Prince of Monaco, her role as wife and mother, her visit to an orphanage, her role as Princess of Monaco, her relationship with her children, as well as Hollywood friends she missed so much.
Howell Conant brings outstanding photography, along with intimate and respectfully detailed explanations for each picture that is portrayed.

Grace has always been one of my favorite role models. Through this beautiful book you will learn that: "Grace had a special sympathy for Monaco's aged, ordering changes in the décor of the principality's only old-age home to make it cheerier. But the plight of Monaco's orphans touched her the most. Each year, she would hold a Christmas party for the children of the orphanage and give them all presents."

I love this book and highly recommend it to anyone who admired her. Barbara Rose, author of, `Individual Power' and `If God Was Like Man'

if the journey to knowledge begins with just a single, small step, here's a stepping stone to the "new literacy"

College leaders would do well to ensure that a copy of young Professor Trinkle's "The History Highway" is on the desktop of each faculty member, and then interview him or her a month later on what they discovered when navigating around the "new literacy". In pointed contrast, I remember too well a much older and "very retiring" professor at a highly ranked college recently insisting that "this Pen is My computer".
A journey through knowledge begins with but a single, small step --as ancient seers would remind us. "The History Highway" offers anyone (older or young) a "roadmap" to their own choice of any of 2000 or so stepping off points. For example, "images taken from the Bayeaux Tapestry [embroidery 230 feet long; the original story document presented to an illiterate population] make this a visually appealing and useful site (Norman Invasion of England, 1066)". But wait, there's more: "Periodic updates to the text are available online."
Our new digital lifestyle can (will?) transform Academia "before you can say Great Scott!" Or at least, for certain, a lot more quickly than the Gutenberg effect transformed schooling and culture.

Worth it's weight in gold.

If you are at all interested in history, this book is indispensable. It offers an exhaustive guide to the reliable and worthwhile historical materials available on the Internet. The entries have been sifted by an international team of subject experts, and there is a resource mentioned for every lover or student of history.

Everyone who has ever stared in awe at a search engine result listing 1 million hits on some subject owes Drs. Trinkle and Merriman a debt of gratitude. This book will take you to the materials you really want to use or explore. It is not only worth the time and money you will invest--it will save you time and pay handsome dividends.

What else can one say--it is this history student's new best friend.

At 600 pages this behemoth is more than twice the length of the first edition. And every page of this guide to history related internet resources is worthwhile. The detailed Table of Contents lists a diverse range of site categories, such as General History, Early American History - 1783-1860, Jewish Holocaust Studies, Geneaology, and Archives and Manuscript collections.

The introductory chapter gives internet startup information, so the book is useful to newbies and experienced web users alike. Later chapters list specific websites along with a paragraph or so of information about the site written by a historian or specialist.

Of particular interest to family history researchers will be the genealogy section, which lists a variety of sites. Instructors and researchers of American History will find useful the 101 pages (expanded and updated from the 33 pages in the first edition) devoted to a chronological list of sites on specific segments of United States History. Also expanded in the new edition is the Women's History segment, which is now 17 pages long and contains a more diverse range of websites than the first edition.

Finally, entries are cross referenced in the index, with internet sites listed in italics. This work is both a useful and enjoyable reference title, and well worth its price.

I found this textbook very well written, organized and clear. The author provides code for perhaps 100 to 150 short applications and applets, each of which demonstrates an element in the language or Toolkit. He then explains the code well. Each chapter builds on the previous. Most, (but not all), of the exercise problems have answers posted on his website. The book is aimed at individuals with some-to-moderate programming experience, who are new to Java. It would be an excellent textbook for a Junior College level course in Java.

This book was great in its day.

Elliotte Rusty Harold seems to latch on to new technologies and write excellent introductions to them. Unfortunately, he does not seem to care to write second editions -- he just moves on to other subject matter.

This book is almost useless now except for the basics of the Java language.

This is one of my favorite computer games of all time. It requires thinking and all the literature that comes with it. The plights of Prince Alexander are well-documented in this adventure game that will keep you hooked. The Isle of Wonder scenes are hilarious, and the vizier's genie has rather creative ways of trying to lure Alexander to his death. There are two main endings to the game and several variations on them, so there is plenty to play for. I enjoyed this game a lot. The interactions with the other characters (such as the pawn shop owner, bookstore operator, Jollo, and the ferryman) are essential, and the literary allusions are fun. All in all, a great game for anyone.

The games Genius!

I beat the game today and started it yesterday, but i must tell you, its not a short game. I spent all day playing it, its a very long game. If you like crazy adventures, this is your game! You practically need the manual to beat the game though. This game is full of hard puzzles, so if you do not like puzzle games then this games probably not for you. I really reccomend people who are into puzzle/adventure games to get this...

This is one of my very favorite computer games from when I was a kid. The storyline is creative and interesting, and will keep you playing until you win! There are also two different endings to this game so you can play it many times without getting bored. I can't recommend this game enough, it. is. amazing. It is quite a long game, and if you buy it for your children they may need some help because some difficult puzzles are involved and they might get stuck. And as some other reviewers have said, you DO NEED the booklet that comes with the CD case, it contains the Winged Ones alphabet that you will need to use to solve some riddles. But don't fret if you've lost it, it can be found on the internet along with many walkthroughs to help you-- it's a long game and you have to go to lots of places in the right order to finish!

People who play new computer games may not be thrilled by the graphics, but remember it is from the '90s and the coolness of the game makes up for anything the graphics my lack. Buy it!

This Game Rocks But......

Everyone's favorite witch is back, and the many fans of author Barbara Brooks Wallace are welcoming Miss Switch's return with open and eager arms.
Written with Ms. Wallace's usual wit, charm and impeccable plotting, the story reunites young Rupert P. Brown III with his former school teacher, that most admirable witch, Miss Switch, about whom he says, "Once you've had the best, nothing else is ever going to seem that good."
The same can be said for Ms. Wallace's book. In an age of heavy, morbidly serious children's fantasy, MISS SWITCH ONLINE comes as a welcome breath of fresh air, jiggling the reader's funny bone and charming a new generation of children looking for a good read and a good laugh.
Don't miss this one. It's a winner.

Snap, crackle, pop! Sharp, prickly (but with a heart of gold) Miss Switch is back at last! It's been too many years since she first appeared, but what's a few years to a witch once condemned to sweep Witch's Mountain for one hundred fifty
years? The crazy computowitch returns, but this time as wicked Saturna's web site computowitch.com. Rupert P. Brown again humorously records the story in his journal, but make no mistake about it, he hasn't a magic (or scientific) power to his name, and considers himself lucky to have Miss Switch around to save his skin, and that of his whole class at Pepperdine Elementary School. This book is as funny as the first two! I hope that Rupert doesn't wait one hundred fifty years, give or take, to record another encounter with the fantastic Miss Switch.

The MySpace.com Handbook: The Complete Guide for Members and Parents informs parents about the risks of MySpace, how it works, and why it is so popular. T Brian Chatfield offers parent-friendly advice on social networking -- presenting real on-line dangers instead of media hype.

There is just enough information here to begin a MySpace profile. The book also includes pointers on customization, HTML, CSS, and safety. It fails to cover a couple of minor areas, but it's nothing that parents can't figure out on their own.

Chatfield deciphers the complex emoticons, slang, and shorthand used by teenagers on the internet. He gives examples of inappropriate messages parents should watch for.

MySpace is a platform on which teenagers can announce themselves, a wonderful tool for those who know how to use it. Parents have a responsibility to ensure their children are taking the right precautions. The best way to do this is to actively participate in the use of MySpace from the start, and The MySpace.com Handbook: The Complete Guide for Members and Parents equips concerned parents with the tools to do so.

MySpace.com Handbook: A Worthwhile Guide

Review Date: 2008-07-14
Social Networking sites like Myspace.com or Facebook are all the rage in today's world for both children and adults. In many cases the sites perform a tremendous service. For an up and coming band, these sites are great marketing tools. For young teens, they can be a dangerous area. The recent disappearance and murder of a young Vermont girl, a case in which her uncle used her Myspace account to lead police down the wrong trail, only helps solidify the danger of these sites when used incorrectly.

I'd like to say that the information provided in this book is not new, and that parents already know about Myspace and how it works. Sadly, I know too many parents who don't pay attention to what their children are doing online and figure their children are smart enough to stay out of danger. For that reason, I urge every parent to purchase this book and read it thoroughly.

T. Brian Chatfield offers an insightful look into the history of these social networking sites before delving into ways Myspace can be a safe environment for your teens to socialize with one another. The problem is that few teens and even adults bother to read privacy practices and place too much information about themselves online. Chatfield covers many safety tips in THE MYSPACE.COM HANDBOOK. The best part is that he does it in an enjoyable, sometimes witty style that makes reading enjoyable.

THE MYSPACE.COM HANDBOOK covers everything from setting up and maintaining your Myspace account to learning how to recognize potential dangers online. Readers learn about blogging, joining groups, chatting with other Myspace users and more. Yet, all the while, there is strong emphasis placed on the most important part of Internet socializing, parents must be active in their child/children's activities. This is the most important lesson parents should learn from reading this book. If you are letting your child onto the Internet and ignoring what they do, you've got to use the advice in this book and become active.

If you've ever questioned the Internet lingo you see floating around online discussion boards and chat rooms, you'll love the guide that the author includes. Every Internet shortcut in existence is included. You'll learn what BRB, GYPO and NIFOC mean, if you do not already know.

Chatfield covers more than how to keep children safe from predators. Cyber bullying is also covered in length. While many schools have learned to prevent bullying, many bullies have moved to the Internet with tragic results. He also covers potential dangers from phishing, malware, spyware and keeping passwords safe.

Parents of pre-teens and teens should cover the material found in T. Brian Chatfield's guide with their children. It's not enough to simply hand your child the book to read, you MUST discuss online safety with them. Don't assume they already know it, remain active in their online socializing. It's better to be a little nosy than to find out when it's too late to help.

This handbook could be renamed A Parent's Guide of the Internet. It explained a ton of detail, from website history to detailed information. There were things that I thought would be over my head but in the concise and simple language the concepts were clear- such as the differences between Web 1.0 and Web 2.0.

There were sites that I'd heard of but had never ventured to understand but the book lays them all out carefully, even explaining their site history and details- Orkut, Bebo, Flickr, and YouTube. Many of us recall [...] from a number of years ago but didn't realize it had become [...] and it likely on its way to further extinction due to sites like MySpace.

The social forum details were something I wasn't clear on. The fact that MySpace has issued a Terms of Service agreement (among them, no one less than 14 can have an account) gave me some confidence that there are efforts to monitor outside of what a parent can do on their own. Additionally, no one older than 18 allowed in the under 18 forum and in the event they do attempt to mask their identity and participate in a minor's chat forum, criminal prosecution can occur. There is also software strictly for monitoring PC use that a parent can use.

Additionally, I began to understand the use of MySpace for me. The Keeping in Touch section discussed finding old classmates and friends- something that previously only use to happen by chance but instead is now often just a few clicks away. 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is worth reading

As a mom with a teen I have heard all the reasons why myspace was a must have. To add to my daughter's social dilemma, she is home-schooled. Her social life is limited to church events and friends staying over night. You can imagine all the moaning I heard when I said "no, you can't have an account". Her arguments were fair. She just wanted to be able to keep in touch. Her friends all used myspace and few of them still used traditional email.

Unlike most parents concerns I am not worried that a predator will stalk my daughter. We have a very open relationship and she knows the signs to look for. I am however very worried about what she is exposed to. I have a strong belief that continual exposure, no matter how slight, will have serious consequences on a child's development. Myspace was an area of exposure that is not acceptable in my home. As I understood the site to work my daughter would be bombarded with friend requests from unfamiliar teens, advertisements that may not be appropriate, and an inability for me to readily supervise her activities. [...] was simply off limits and I had no reason to feel any different. That was of course until I read the [...] handbook.

This book offered an amazing amount of information for the myspace user and parents of teens with myspace accounts. It touches in great detail on areas of privacy and how to protect yourself or your child. It shows how to avoid unwanted friend requests and advertisements. The book even explains how to use myspace in a way that shows how friendly social networking can be. There is a section devoted to protecting yourself and your teens from many potential threats and gives a realistic view on these threats. After reading this book I am confident that my daughter and I can work together allowing her to join the social network her friends keep begging her to join. I shared the information in the book with her and she was willing to work together. Not too mention thrilled that mom also wanted to share this with her.

Any parent that is having doubts about their teens on myspace.com needs to read this book. It is the most informative guide I have seen out there. Even parents with active myspace users should read this book to better understand what their teens are doing. Not a parent? This guide offers a cluster of information on how to create and maintain a unique and creative myspace account. This is a book you will use over and over again as you utilize all the possibilities with a myspace account. This book deserves 5 stars.

One might wonder how long a book having to do with online advertising strategy will last, considering the rapid pace of change in technology and online rules, but Joe Plummer, Steve Rappaport, Taddy Hall and Robert Barocci focus on strategies that are not particularly vulnerable to time or tech changes. They take online advertising in the direction of other sophisticated mass media advertising, including targeting specific markets precisely, and using multiple channels and other audience-oriented tactics. With this book's information and abundant real-life examples, marketing and brand managers can create winning plays. getAbstract thinks they will want this valuable tool on their desks so they can build their brands online and do it right.

This book is clearly useful, but assumes that you at least have a dedicated marketing person and budget, more often a whole marketing department that manages actual campaigns. Assuming your company is of that size, then if you don't have much experience in online, or in managing campaigns in general, this is a great jumpstart. It can also be a handy reference to give the boss so he understands this "new thing" you're trying to do with online marketing, and why he/she should trust you to spend some money.

The book is highly credible, even though I wouldn't take the time to look up any of the referenced information myself. The information looks to validate assumptions with objective information, not just "this is cool, you should try it." It's not going to necessarily change anything about my online initiatives except the way I justify certain kinds of spending. It's also nice to know I'm not far from the mark where I have drawn my own previous conclusions about the online media.

An outstanding guide and source of useful info

This is one of the most useful and effective books I've acquired to advance our advertising strategy. I made an effort to log on here to write a review because I was extremely happy with the purchase. Not only is the info in the book useful, but the numerous studies and examples referenced in the book have also been extremely useful in presenting our business case for the strategy this book helped us create. I highly recommend it.

Excellent Guide for Online Advertising

When I first received the book and skimmed it very quickly, I was initially disappointed. Too much text, lack of "punchlines", and seemed to cover only small number of facets of online advertising.

After reading the book carefully, though, I was impressed. Very detailed coverage of many topics, excellent citations and references to actual studies, and many cases that are discussed in detail.

The book would be an excellent textbook for a course on online advertising. It is not a "how-to" book, with lists of to-do items. Everything is substantiated by pointing to a related (academic or professional) research study. Many discussions reveal things that are not obvious even to seasoned professionals.

In short: Buy the book if you plan to invest the time to actually read the book, and you are interested in understanding in-depth many aspects of online advertising. If you just need a book that can be read quickly and you simply want to follow blindly its instructions, search for something else.

As for recommendation, I have purchased several copies which I have given to agencies I work with. Aside from covering facets of online, the surprise was a series of "futures" by a variety of specialists. Well-done.

I purchased the cd rom style and ended up printing a copy so that I could have a hard copy for easy reference and the cd for its incredible links. The excel work sheets helped me develop my own viable business plan. The hard copy is dogeared and well worn, the cd is very close at hand. I highly recommend the book for anyone interested in selling books on line.

I am a small seller. What's more when I started out I hardly had any experience of selling stuff on the internet at all. I learnt a lot from Mike's book. He really covers all the bases from choosing books to describing and packaging them as well as customer service. I also find it very convenient that whenever I am at a loss sitting in front of my pc the book is just a click away. Thanks, Mike!

After reading this book and another recently (2006) published book on selling books online, I highly recommend this one for several reasons. Because this book is a cd, Mike was able to include extremely helpful pictures which were absent in the other book I read. Notably, clear color pictures depicting various defects in used books; like foxing, cracked, chipped and several other types of defects were illustrated, which were most helpful to me as a novice. In addition, he includes useful charts for analyzing your own business model. As a now part-time CPA, I really enjoyed having someone provide me with concise data which he had accumulated over years of working with excel sheets. Most authors give you only basic information such as average sale prices, average book costs and postage expenses. I'm sure you want to know what you can expect as your bottom line before you jump into something new.

Finally, with the first book I read I found myself jumping up to go to my computer to check out a dot com vendor that they recommended. In this book, Mike lets you just click on a link (and there are many) and voila -- you're there. Other interactive aspects of this cd allows you to navigate the book with ease using both the table of contents and the index.

And the icing on the cake, if you have any questions, Mike answers them by e-mail astonishingly fast. Now if only I could get my plumber to do that life would be a bowl of cherries!

WITHIN THE FIRST WEEK OF STUDYING THE INFORMATION THAT MICHAEL HAS SO EFFECTIVELY PUT TOGETHER, I FOUND BOOKS AT BOOK SALES, LIBRARIES AND EVEN GARAGE SALES FOR ANYWHERE FROM $0.25 TO NO MORE THAN A DOLLAR EACH. ALL OF THESE BOOKS CAN BE RESOLD FOR $25.00 OR MORE EACH, MY BEST FIND SO FAR BEING A BOOK PURCHASED FOR $0.25 THAT CAN BE RESOLD FOR $85.00. I AM THRILLED THAT I CAME ACROSS MICHAEL'S AD FOR THIS BOOK AND PURCHASED IT; IT IS WORTH MANY TIMES OVER THE SMALL INVESTMENT FOR SUCH PRECISE AND USABLE INFORMATION. I contact Michael Mould about his book and he was very helpful in answering questions before I purchased. After receiving the CD-Rom (which he signed for me, thanks Michael, I will auction it 1st ed autographed...just kidding) I read through it and put many of the principles into play. I have since built an inventory about 300 books (been at this 3 weeks now) and intend to grow this to about 2,000 or so. I have seen significant profits on some books which I bought for $1 and sold for $50. Bottom line, is that this manual provided by Michael is real, authentic, time tested, and practical. Most of all it works. You will not waste your money on this if you are serious about your book online book business. Thanks for sharing Michael, our family is having a lot of fun with this.

Mark Scott's knowledge regarding corporate business dealings (timely & scary!) is matched by his clever word play and life-like characters. Suspense at the end of each chapter keeps readers turning pages - despite the irritation of printing errors his editors should have caught. The story will keep you guessing "who dunit" until the very end.

Finally, a mystery writer with a background in business. What Grisham does with the world of law, Scott does with the world of economics. His writing is brilliant--clever plot, memorable characters and savory details. He's definitely got an audience for this book. I can't wait to read the next one.

How can petty men with no integrity topple worldwide conglomerates? It's all here, explained by an expert on finance, but laced with the liberties of fiction that depict the human condition in our own back yards as well.

This book really nails the Dallas corporate ambience. The murder mystery is extremely well crafted. The description of the financial shennanigans is hilarious, but at the same deadly serious.
