What a pleasureReview Date: 2002-10-29
A friend of mine showed me this book.. What a pleasure!!!
I was so impressed.
Not only by its appearance, but also by the quality and amount of information compiled. Not to mention unique photos. Then
I saw a review of it on the Amazon.ca by
Mr. Peter Adler with a title “Do not waste your money”. Why ?! wondered. He said
he reviewed it also for ‘The Edmonton Journal’.
(Why should he review it twice ?) So I surfed the archives of this journal
and found an awkward style of a review using inadequate words such as : “extremely sloppy”, “rubbish”, “flop”, “fatal flaw”
etc. What did he found in the 1020 pages of the book ? - May be a misspelled player name and two wrong dates???… Give me
a break. He says : “Authors and editors should be ashamed of themselves”.Is it also because it is "beautifull" too?? I say:
shame on you Mr. Adler. Your style reflects your character. And I ask - WHAT IS HIS HIDDEN AGENDA ??

A beautiful book, but...Review Date: 2001-02-27
Where's Neil Leifer's picture of Muhammad Ali standing triumphantly over Sonny Liston after knocking him out in 1965? Where are any of a dozen other seminal pictures? The answer: not here, because they weren't taken by an Allsport or a Hulton-Getty photographer. This is a book that, according to the index, contains not a SINGLE mention of or image from Sports Illustrated, probably the single largest and most defining force in sports photography in the last 50 years.
Don't get me wrong, this is an impressive book that displays some fantastic and great-but-obscure images well. Just don't buy it thinking you're getting a complete survey and overview of sports photography from its beginnings to the present.

Arthur and the Goalie ghostReview Date: 2003-01-15
Thought it was an ok book because it did not give enough detail and it was not a good story. I would recommend this book for ages 6-9 because it is a fairly easy book to read. And it is in easy language to read and under stand. I recommend this book because it is about sports and it was easy to read.

This Beckett has it all, every card you can imagine. NHL, AHL, International...It even has cards listed from the EA sports NHL 95 game, now that is digging deep. I recommend this book for everyone that has an interest in Hockey cards and Hockey in general.

What a disappointmentReview Date: 2006-07-25
characters are either bland general types or stereotypes. The only ones you'll even remotely care about are Bobby,Oscar, and
Margaret, because they're the only ones who seem to have any life to them.Forget it.There are other, better novels out now.

For fans of youth hockey parents/old-timers onlyReview Date: 2003-08-04
The main fault of this book, for me, is that it does not appeal to many diehard NHL fans. It just isn't for them. He acts like the NHL should be like pond hockey with little checking, no fighting, and much less competition. I'd like to see my team have fun, but I would never want them to treat it like a lacksadaisical pond hockey game.
Very contrary to the title of the book, Hood says little about the good of the game. In fact, most of his book is whining about how the game used to be and complaining about how bad the NHL is today. He should have named it "The Bad of the Game." I particularly disagreed with him re: the instigator. He actually argues that there has not been more stickwork since the instigator was enacted - clearly Hood watches a different NHL than I do.
If you're a parent of a youth hockey fan, you'll love it. If you like to reminisce and complain about the current NHL, you'll love it. If you're part of the 99% of the "other" category for NHL fans, you'll loathe it.
