Hockey Books

First of all, I have to say that I was disappointed by the poor quality of the printing of this book. It was more like an advance proof copy or something they'd hand out at a sports research convention. The printing was a notch above photocopy, and the glued binding was falling apart on the first opening. I think the most frustrating thing is that given the large number of rare and interesting photos, it's a shame that the printing is so cheap. That being said, I have to praise the content of the book itself. Cliches like "exhaustive", "comprehensive" and "definitive" get tossed around a lot, but they all apply here. This book is it the most thorough treatment of the subject I've read. Best of all, it's not just a compilation of stats that only Rain Man could love, nor is it just stories and anecdotes (and there are many about the WHA, believe me). It's balanced enough to have something for everyone. Maybe they'll do a better quality edition in the future. I hope so; this book definitely belongs in the library of both hockey researchers and hockey fans.

Jack Lautier's history of the World Hockey Association is more than a nostalgia piece. It captures the freshness and excitement of a new professional sports league as it dares to challenge one of the monoliths of the industry in the 1970s. It also illustrates the foibles of new millionaires spending their money, sometimes without understanding the finer points of the game (as in one owner not recognizing a puck when he first saw one). "Same Name, Different Game" is filled with statistics and photographs of the very famous (like the young Wayne Gretzky and the aged Gordie Howe) and the not-so-famous who played in the WHA during its seven-year existence. With the help of WHA Statistician Frank Polnaszek, Lautier has produced a book that will make fans remember the league and its players well into the next century.

Shark is one of the worst players and is part of the infamous Spaz line. When he is needed to fill in for someone. He scores the winning goal with a beautiful play. He thought it was a fluke. Now the rest of his teammates expect him to play better. He isn't improving and they are freezing him out. Can he reagin their respect?

Shark is not a good player he is slow but the Wolfbay Wings need him to fill there roster. One day Shark scores a goal that wins the game. Know the rest of the team expect him to keep getting better, and they're gettin mad when he messes up. What will he do?

The Wolfbay Wings books are great for young hockey fans and players. I enjoyed these books.

Harvey Wittenberg was so much a part of the old Chicago Stadium, this book was worth reading all his little behind the scenes stories. Who could forget that voice (public address announcer). I liked this book because there are so FEW books written about the Blackhawks, especially about the late 60's greats, Hull, Mikita, Esposito, etc. Great book if you're an old time fan!

A nice insider look at an original six team. Wittenberg's voice is etched into the memory any Hawk fan who attended home games. His stories were enjoyable and a nice look at players and coaches many fans never had the chance to see. The books tends to be heavy on the 60's & 70's, it wouild have been nice to have more anecdotes from the late 80's & 90's. But it is sill enjoyable over all. Buy the book, read it and then give it to another fan.

Another reviewer complains that this book contains only NHL stats -- but that's the point. This slimmed down version of Total Hockey sells for less than half the price and contains all of the most important data. This book is a tremebdous resource and a great value.

This book is not as good as Total Hockey, it only has players NHL stats and not their minor and junior league stats.

52-Week Hockey Training is a very complete book that, if followed properly, will help immensely in improving your overall fitness as well as getting you into great "hockey" shape. The book overall is very satisfactory and achieves its purpose, but I think that some improvements can be made. Some of the photos do not give a good picture of the exersice and all of the pictures are in black and white. A foreword by an NHL star was lacking and would have been a nice compliment. One thing I thought very useful however, was the breakdown of the four main training periods from off-season to postseason.

This book is a great training guide that covers everything from flexibility to power and quickness. There are countless exercises, drills, procedures and schedules that will make attaining your goals much easier. A very complete book that is a bit rough around the edges.

I think this book has a lot of great info on one of the greatest players to ever play defense-Al MacInnis. This book has information on his scoring, his defense, and has a lot of great tips for young players!

A great insight into the path to the nhl for the mighty ducks of anaheim. an insight into the players and coaches which make the team who they are. In such a competitive league (NHL) It shows great courage to join the league. Overall a great book and i highly recomend it to any mighty ducks fan or to anyone who enjoys a kind of feel good book

It's a very good book for a beginner, though sometimes rules are not explained clearly. But, then, rules can be found anywhere and this book tells how to learn shooting, speed skating and how to be an effective goalie. Plus it also tells you how old must players be to fit in leagues.

I bought this book as I was going to be coaching young house league goalies. I am a goalie myself but wanted to get some expert advice on how to teach it. The book is a revised addition & some of it reads dated. Though it does a good job of explaining the basics for beginners I can't see anyone older getting much out of it.

As a goalie who got a late start on the sport, I did not get a lot of formal training from coaches and trainers. With Young's books I got some training which allowed me to refine some of my weaker points and was reminded of some points which I often forgot.
