Great format great presentation, terrific photographs, each page a new adventure. Andrew Podnieks is very knowledgeable and a wonderful word weaver.

I wish I had had this book during the telecast of the women's soccer championship -- now I know what the commentators should have told me! Bartges's great illustrations and down-to-earth text likewise make the infathomable rules of ice hockey easy to understand -- I can't wait for the season to start so that I can test my newly gained expertise. My wife read the chapter on football and has already watched some exhibition NFL games -- and enjoyed them!

With the proliferation of sporting events on television, this book should be sitting beside every TV set.

If you grew up watching the NHL original six, you will absolutely love the pictures in this book. The cover shot of Bobby Orr and the "Pocket Rocket" is alone worth the price. Loaded with many more great B&W and color photos from the pre-war era into the 80's.

The book was flawlessly researched by these two Canadian brother authors. Their love of the sport of hockey and their passion for human history and detail are contagious when reading this book. This book has everything a hockey fan would ever want in a book! The player register and individual stats give the reader an in-depth look at the 1999-2000 season. This book is a must read for all hockey fans, not just Red Wings or Yzerman fans. It follows one of the NHL's greatest captain throughout his NHL career, from the beginning to his 16 years as a Red Wing to his back-to-back Stanley Cup Championships in 1997 and 1998. It's not just filled with stories to put a smile on your face, though. There's amazing full-colour photos of Steve at his best and quotes from many NHL players and coaches about Steve. I think the most interesting part of the book is Steve's game-day routine . I've always wondered what a player like Steve does on game-day, now I know! Paul Harris has put together a great book that all hockey fans can enjoy. I recommend it to everyone who likes hockey. From little kids to adults, anyone can enjoy this book.

An excellent book on the history and evolution of the hockey stick. From tree trunks and roots to graphite and composites. Includes some interesting stories along the way. The many companies, countries, and individuals who have entered this odd and (suprisingly) profitable industry is also quite interesting. The book is well written, and does not bore. It is not just a quaint nostalgic look back at the old days, like i feared it would be. An excellent read.

An outstanding history of hockey in Fort Wayne, and a wonderful read. Author Blake Sebring nails the history of the third oldest franchise in Minor-League hockey with a series of entertaining five to ten paragraph tales. He hits on life in the old International Hockey League, squaring off with opponents like Muskegon and Toledo. He touches on life after coast-to-coast expansion and the demise of the old league. He captures stories from life in today's United Hockey League. Throughout, he spins stories that perfectly describe what fans love about hockey.


Sebring focuses on the names and faces that populate the game, and never forgets to toss in the irrelevant gem (Did you know the Komets are 10-0 in games where the San Diego Chicken made an appearance?) that truly makes this book indispensable for the fan of minor league sports.

Reading the names in the Dedication and scanning the Chapter names, I knew I was in for a treat. Paging through the Record Book and the season by season stats, I knew I had a keepsake. This is the way a history should be compiled!
