This first biography of John Grisham reads like a mystery. It describes the mystique of Mississippi and gives historic tidbits of each town where Grisham grew up to whet the reader's appetite. For hopeful writers, it tells how Grisham evolved as a writer. A good, quick, informative read!

A writing life

Narayan of Rebeccasreads highly recommends THE JOHN GRISHAM STORY as a biography of his writing life. There are no family trees, no attempt to trace out genealogy or any of the frills & hoopla commonly associated with biographies. What we find inside is a simple tale, narrated in simple words, about the life & times of one of the most widely read & popular authors of the present times.

Through the words of many of his friends, teachers & close-relatives we find out the real man behind the stunning works of THE FIRM & A TIME TO KILL, etc. It mainly focuses on three aspects of Grisham's life: the first of a lawyer & a politician; the second that of a writer extraordinaire, the king of legal thrillers, & the third about Grisham's dream of becoming a baseball star.

Two out of three's good going!

Do catch our interview with Libby Hughes.

Beautifully and Sensitively Illustrated: A Must Read
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2001-12-04
The sweet, tender illustrations of this heart breaking--then heart healing--story make it really come alive for children and adults alike.

Nicole Tadgell's characters arouse a tender affinity for the lovable protagonist Joe Joe as well as the assumptive shopkeeper: we see anger, regret, conciliation clear as the written text. The story is a fine lesson in courage and character for all races.

And children interested in baseball will be intrigued by the vintage photography of past baseball heroes, learning a great deal of the history of the game in tandem with the history of African Americans in the 20th century.

A story of moral conviction and justice for young readers

Just Call Me Joe Joe begins the biblical passage John 10:3, "...and the sheep shall hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name." Written especially for African-American children ages 6-10 by Jean Alicia Elster and nicely illustrated in color by Nicole Tadgell, Just Call Me Joe Joe is the story of a 10-year-old African-American boy who must deal with a shop owner who mistakenly assumes that Joe Joe was part of the gang who just trashed the store. Joe Joe must find the courage and spirit to return and convince the shop owner of the truth. Just Call Me Joe Joe is a highly recommended and strong story of moral conviction and justice for young readers.

Learn From Children
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-05-13
Adults have so very much to learn from children and this book is yet another lesson. All our lives as we are growing up, we hear things like no, don't do that, you can't possibly, it'll never happen... After hearing so much negative input, we come to adulthood with negative feelings about who we are and what we can accomplish in life.

The little boy in this book teaches us that it is our attitude that makes all the difference in our lives. Not happy? Everything in your life going wrong? Just can't succeed no matter how hard you try? Go back to childhood, my friend. Rediscover the unihibited possibilities in life, the joy, the feeling of I can do anything! The biggest lesson of childhood is that the possibilities in life are limitless - if we believe in ourselves.

This book teaches us that lesson simply, beautifully and joyfully. We but need to respond and believe.

I would recommend this book to everyone. Best book I've read since "The Polar Express"

One of the greatest childrens books ever.

A wonderful story about a little boy with a baseball and a bat and how being successful is just a point of view. The book is based on the Kenny Rogers video of the same name. I happened to see it by accident and loved it. I was delighted when the book was published and the CD of the song included with the book is just an added bonus. This book is sure to become a classic.

"KID" SURVIVES WWII AND RETURNS TO DODGERS
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2000-02-02
One of the most interesting books in the Tunis series about the Brooklyn Dodgers, "The Kid Comes Back" is very unusual in that it's not really about baseball so much as it is about courage. Roy Tucker ("The Kid From Tomkinsville") serves in the U.S. Army during the Second World War in Europe, where he suffers an injury in battle. This book deals with what he goes through in the war effort, his rehabilitation and his difficult return to major league baseball with the Brooklyn Dodgers. Tunis, who also wrote "Silence Over Dunkirk," is extremely effective at letting younger readers know what WWII was like. He also does a masterful job of painting a word picture of what it was like for veterans to come back to an America that had changed while they were gone. Of all the Tunis books, this (to me) is the best. The "gee whiz" tone of the first four books in the series is subdued, and a very strong storyline carries all the way through.

The pleasures of learning, playing, and sharing passion

I first saw this book at the Baseball Hall of Fame last summer. They have a great play area for young kids and I read it there. My daughter loves this story and I love that it encourages kids to be athletic, smart, and passionate. Annie Ellis loves her Spaldeen -- and the story does an excellent job of relaying that through rythmic writing that draws you into the pleasures of it all. If you love cities and passion, then this is a great book for you and your kid(s). I've read it aloud at least 100 times and it's one of my favorites.

A Queens Kid and her Pinkie

Review Date: 2001-02-08
If you grew up in the borough of Queens in the city of New York in the 1960s, you know from Spaldeens (okay--they're made by Spalding, but we never said it that way)--those pink rubber balls with the slightly fuzzy feel that you used to swing your leg over for "A My Name Is Alice." Cari Best has written a dandy story about an energetic kid named Annie who has a way with a Spaldeen. The writing is vibrant and humorous, the illustrations lush and alive, and kids love the story. I know what I'm talking about, because I recently read the book to my son's first grade class, and they got me to promise I'd bring them all back Spaldeens on my next trip to New York.

Nice job, Cari!

Although I am not a baseball fan, I really enjoyed reading about a girl who found the strength to make her dreams come true, no matter how hard it was. I am very excited that an author has taken the time to write sports books for girls. Read this book, I am positive that you will enjoy this book and the others in the Broadway Ballplayers series.

Review Date: 2006-01-18
Don't let the fact that this man is bullpen coach of the Atlanta Braves keep you from reading this book. (Let it surprise you, but don't let it deter you from buying and reading this book.) This guy is good, real good, and the stories he tells, and the manner in which he tells them, rank with the best of recent Southern Fiction....The love, care, concern and classic gothic horror of Southern Fiction, and, at times, real life in the South is within these pages. A new Southern Voice telling Southern stories in a masculne, manly, way. No frills, no nonsense, straight to the heart and soul of us all, especially us Southerners. We understand and so does Bobby Dews.

Let Them Play - Hits a Home Run!

Review Date: 2006-07-23
Margot Theis Raven shares with us a forgotten 1955 event - when adults allowed racism to prevent the African American Cannon Street All-Stars from playing other Little League teams in South Carolina for the Little League World Series.

I'm not a baseball fan. Yet, my eyes welled when reading this book about a team of 14 black boys who wanted nothing more than to play baseball.

Margot Raven captures the 1950s in words. She reminds us of the pride and support the black community had for the Cannon Street All-Stars. Chris Ellison's illustrations transports us to 2nd base, to joyful pillow fights, and to a stadium chanting, "Let Them Play."

Excellent gift for children and baseball fans of all ages!

As a white man born only one year before this travesty of "sportsmanship" took place I cannot begin to tell people how important it is that this story be told not just to my generation who grew up in the begiinings of the civil rights, no the HUMAN rights, movements, but even more important, to the children of today. What could easily become an "oh poor us" story is not. It is a story of a wonderful bunch of kids who just wanted to play. "Let Them Play" is something you won't soon forget. Read it, give one to a kid and put one in a school library!
