Gambling as a recreation? Yes. Gambling as an addictive/compulsive disorder which could lead to homelessness or suicide? Yes, that too. This book is highly satirical and funny and to use a phrase: Love it or leave it, this book pokes fun at many of the taboo's which thrive in Las Vegas. With the spread of gambling to other states, which other ills may follow? Gambling - it comes with a caveat emptor gaurantee. -- a long time Las Vegas resident

Seeburger shows how people get lured into addictive behaviors by actually wanting control over their lives through the predictable outcomes from abusing a substance or activity, and how they can take responsibility for fleeing the slavery of addiction. People become disowned by addiction and can find their way out by taking charge, not by a victim-mentality. A wonderfully insightful book which should be read by everyone.

Most authoritative modern text on the subject

This is the most illuminating, up-to-date, and entertaining history of gambling in the West that has yet been published. I was a student at the University of Salford (UK) when I had to read this as part of a course on the sociology of gambling. Reith's style is scholarly, yet accessible. This text stands as an example of how interesting and diverse the historical/ cultural development of gambling has been, and of how much gambling can tell us about modern society and, as such, stands as a riposte to the yawn-inducing tedium of the 'problem gambling' school of books on this topic, which consists of a bunch of safety-merchants/salesmen who (presumably) aspire to scholary wisdom, yet fail miserably to say anything useful about one of the most fundamental of human traits: the itch for play. In short, Gerda Reith's book should be required reading for anyone who is interested in why anyone would take a chance on anything (and not just gambling).

Ainslie writes with wit, grace, clarity, and conviction. That he is the acknowledged master of handicapping theory in his generation is also significant. His gentle humor and dignity is unmatched in today's handicapping writers. If you are new to horse racing and paramutuel betting, you can do no better than starting with the best.

Though this guide was released in the late 1970's, I consider this to be the most important book written on Harness Racing. The book is well written and interesting, it is not an angles on gambling on races type of book. Instead it is an honest straight forward approach to attending Harness Racing and understanding the sport, its history and creating speed ratings from the racing program. Even regular attendees of the races can learn from this book, and enjoy the read as well.

Read this DiMarco book before the others!

I've read and reviewed a couple of the DiMarco's previous books on dating and relationships. They were humorous and had good advice, but also tainted somewhat by superficiality. Sometimes I got the impression that they (husband and wife team Michael and Hayley) were two perfect pretty-people dispensing advice from on-high. Plus, despite claiming a Christian worldview, their conclusions were short on Scriptural backing. However, "All In" addresses these issues in spades, while still providing the usual DiMarco lighthearted insights.
Michael DiMarco tackles the subject of risk, using gambling (poker, blackjack, etc.) as a framework to discuss "life, love, and faith in a world of risk." A number of recent Christian books have dealt with the topic of risk, but I liked how Mr. DiMarco anted up his checkered personal life for our edification. He reveals an addiction to gambling that led him to embezzlement and jail time. Plus, he discusses his first marriage and subsequent divorce, and takes responsibility for its failure. But instead of folding due to these setbacks, with God's help he learned from them, overcame their consequences, and is now a husband, father, writer, and CEO of Hungry Planet publishing company. Not bad.
I was impressed with Mr. DiMarco's honesty about his past, and the hard-won lessons he gleaned from it. What's even better is his ability to communicate real-world wisdom in a readable and interesting form. Each chapter discusses an aspect of risk, whether in relationships, job, ethics, or walk with God. I liked his perspective on how the desire to exert control of our world and avoid pain determines the risks we take - or avoid taking. He also quotes Scripture quite often to bolster his hand - it seems that there are more Biblical passages here than in the previous three DiMarco books I've read. And he's not preachy or self-righteous, either. The chapters end with a "Your Turn To Deal" section of topic-specific personal application questions.
Make sure you read "All In" before getting any of the other DiMarco books. Along with instruction and humor, "All In" provides a solid, honest lead-in to the DiMarco Hungry Planet line. Indeed, it's like a key piece of the DiMarco puzzle has finally been filled in - they are now more real and credible in my eyes, at any rate. "All In" is a solid bet.

This book is the first of two books written by Dale Seymour and is a must for any serious collector of Antique Poker Chips. The book is a 286 page, soft cover bible and has hundreds of illustrations of poker chips. Included is a history of Poker Chips along with a section covering the materials used to make the chips. In the back of the book are examples of Manufacturers Catalogs and a coding system developed by Seymour.

Smart, easy to use card counting system
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.

Mathematically very sound and easy to read, this book presents an unbalanced 10-count system. This system's playing efficiency is quite good(.61), and because it is an unbalanced system with the pivot point at the 2.0 non-ten/ten ratio it has a perfect insurance correlation. It's betting correlation is weak compared to more complex counting systems, but with a separate ace count the BC can be brought above 0.90. Because of the ease of keeping count, and with the pivot point at the point of betting favorability, I think this is a good system to use for multiple deck games (though when it was written single-deck games predominated, and the initial chapters are written for single-deck games). I have used this system to good effect. If you want a system for shoe games where you can have an advantage over the casino, yet can keep an accurate count and still relax, this may be the system for you.
