Well done, Frederick Schofield! I really liked this story. It's been a while since I read a book that didn't require constant thought. I turned pages for the sheer pleasure. A thriller without disappointments raced through a gripping ending.

This book has everything you need to bring major havoc into your game. And if it's intrigue you want this one has plenty to offer. Go into a dark boardroom with the likes of Donald Trump, where Frederick Schofield adds new meaning to stacking the deck. Actually, I first spotted this book on sale at one of Trump's casinos, which I later found amusing when I discovered an entertainingly evil character in Megasino who looks so much like him. A wide assortment of faces, nifty plot, and plain fun here. A must read.

This casino marketing exec has worked in Vegas and AC. Thought I'd seen it all inside the game houses until I read Schofield's Megasino. I recognized some of the faces and was introduced to new ones, but the Donald Trump character was right on the mark. So was his exwife. Also liked the Steve Wynn double as a hero and I'd heard stories about him and Diannah Ross in the old days, so it was fun to see where life might have taken them. This book was special fun for me as an insider and one everyone should like.

Just noticed that Frederick Schofield has some characters that travel between his stories. I liked seeing a favorite face from "The Boardwalkers" mature and walk into "Megasino." It's probably not right to say who. But the question rises. Whom might I meet again in another Schofield book? On to "A Run to Hell."

A web of intrigue weaves an immediately absorbing story with vivid scenes and unrelenting action. Unlike some books I have read that caused me to dose off, Megasino kept my eyes wide all the way through. Schofield uses great detail in composing the characters backgrounds and motivations, giving you a full picture of what's going on. Some characters are slightly veiled versions of the famous and glamorous. Others are the kind nightmares are made of. I recommend this book to anyone who likes interesting, entertaining, and action-packed books. In its genre it is tops.

I call this book my "gamling bible". Of all the books I've read on this subject, Ortiz's book is the easiest to understand and the most enjoyable to read. I have definately improved my play because of him. He not only teaches what the game is, but how to play effectively and impove your chances of winning. I highly recommend this book!

Mr. Ortiz's book is a good introductory book that deals with the basics of gambling, while also including some elements of advanced gambling technique. The book covers the basics of every major casino game as well as slots and video poker. One of the great strengths of the book is that it teaches how to figure out the odds and payoff for casino games and tells you which ones you're more likely to win at. It also goes into detail about the basics of things like card counting, gambling systems, and even casino credit, junkets, and comps. It is the easiest and most pleasant book I've read for the beginning gambler and I would recommend it to anybody wanting to better their gambling skills.

I can't recommend it enough.

In comparison to other, better selling guides, this book excels in that it keeps to the topic at hand, namely, Reiki. The descriptions are thoughtful, the illustrations and photographs beautiful and appropriate. A great book for beginners, as it doesn't bring in confusing and conflicting viewpoints as I have seen elsewhere. Those who already know Reiki, and have other books, may wish to add this to their collection just to see how such a book should be done. Perfect for use during discussions with clients.

As a student Reiki, I was referred to this book. As a now Reiki Master, I recommend it to students, or anyone wishing to understand this great Universal Healing Energy that we all have. It has short chapters, that are in depth, with illustrations. It is not the end of all of Reiki knowledge, but Richard Ellis has packed as much as he should have into this easily transportable book. It is sturdy, and has flaps, built into the book, at either end for bookmarking. A great tool for Reiki Masters, and an easy to understand book for newcomers to Reiki.

Richard Ellis' fine introduction into the world of Reiki was just the beginning of a change for my family and myself. It was clear, to the point, and unpretentious; allowing me to understand the world of Reiki though this was the first time I was reading about it.

"Practical Reiki" motivated me to get initaiated as soon as possible, so you can imagine my elation when I found that two Reki Masters reside in Istanbul where my younget son lives. This informatiuon came to me several days before my wife and I were on our way to visit him and spend our holiday in Istanbul. The three of us were duely initaiated and I moved on to the second level while my wife and son decided to wait before they did the same. I can sincerely and unequivocally say that this experience has changed our lives.

I am aware that I have written little about the book. This is because I didn't feel the need to get into any details that the reader will undoubtadly realise by himself. The title says it all: "Practical Reki," this book does not stray into topics that Reki afficionados can only understand. It is a book for all and any who wish to enter, or at least get a glimpse of the wonder that Reki offers. For me it was an inspirartion, a beginning, a stepping stone into a new and fulfilling world.

Thank you Richard Ellis NAMASTE

I never knew what I was up against when I played slots, but after reading Thrifty Gambling I found out the truth in plain, common sense language. I will still play slots, but thanks to Thrifty Gambling I am now an informed player. They used to be a mystery. Now I feel like I am in control of both the game and the money. Thrifty Gambling has changed the whole way I play and it's all for the better. I have read a lot of gambling books, but never one so informative with good common sense gambling techniques. An awesome, must buy book!

"Thrifty Gambling", by John G. Brokopp is a wonderfully written treatise on the field of gambling. There are charts, diagrams, statistics, and practical information that will save its readers money and their sanity. Many false premises concerning odds and your chance to win at a given game are laid out and explained. The term "thrifty" is well chosen and defined to give you the best play for your money. Games are defined, explained, and odds spelled out. This is a wonderful book to read and read again, and I bet you'll find your investment in the book will be well paid off with a better understanding of odds and better play for your money.

Read this book if you are on a tight budget (like me). All casino games are covered, but my great challenge is video poker. My bankroll is only $100 these days. After reading, and chuckling, through the whole book, especially some of the margin notes, I decided to make my gambling sessions more methodical. (1) I learned to walk away early if I am ahead from when I started. I now take profits suitable to my investment and to my mood that day. You, too, will learn how to set your "investment goals". (2) The more hands I can play with my measly $100 bankroll, the more chances I have to win a Royal (it has happened!), so I learned to go for optimum play, not dollars. That has become my real goal. This book sets you on that course. (3) My "reward" when I lose (I do that, too!)is how much of my little bankroll I am able to hold on to during any 3 hour session. (4) I learned to really enjoy my casino visits and get better at my game at the same time. Players of other casino games will, too. They will be entertained by the whole book, and learn to play their favorite games better and with a better perspective. They may also be blessed with more money to play with. That helps to win more dollars, but the real goal is to have more fun doing it. Thanks for a great book!

I originally bought a copy of "The Unofficial Guide to Casino Gambling" on impulse, at a book store, while researching a totally different topic. (I'm one those people who wander around bookstores for hours and always end up finding something interesting to buy.) The border notes hooked me into the purchase. I had to read more. The main text was even better... easy to read, often gently humorous, and very informative about odds, strategy, and the world of casinos. I am now ordering another copy to donate as a raffle prize. The more serious gambler can improve his odds, and will approach his next casino experience with a fresh perspective. The non-gambler will just have fun reading it, and gain some knowledge about what casinos are all about. Either one will come away having learned something. You write extemely well, Mr. Nestor!

I went through about 20 books at the mega book store and found this one. Although there are many different games, I wanted the fundamentals on SLOTS, VIDEO POKER, and CRAPS.

This book examines far more games than what I wanted.

The writing is easy to read, interesting, and helpful. My wife and I have visited casinos a few times. We went to Biloxi, MS last week to see The Eagles in concert (fabulous!) and went to some of the casinos. I got this book before going. My wife is really only interested in slots.

The times we gambled before, we were completely ignorant. THAT is how the casinos make so much money! This time, we walked in with an entirely different understanding and attitude.

Based on the slot machine fundamentals we learned, we played at 3 different casinos for about 6 hours. Each play was with $40-$60, at one machine playing together :). That is a little low, I'd prefer $100 bankroll. We played quarter slots only, one at a time. Although with $100+, I'd play max coins. Our purpose was totally entertainment, have fun together, and not be rushed.

Because of the book, we knew how to evaluate and understand the different machines, and where to look for the looser machines. That is part of the fun.

We left up $12, had quite a few drinks, did some people watching, and had a great time.

Our favorite casinos in Biloxi were the Grand Casinos in both Biloxi and Gulfport, about 10 miles apart. Each has a HUGE non-smoking slot area. How nice!

I would recommend this book to anyone who thinks the title fits what they're looking for...

As a layman, that is non-professional and occasional gambler, (after all, I live a stone's throw from Las Vegas!)my curiosity was piqued by the fact that some people seem to have some sort of psychic insight into gaming. How did they do it? Could I do it myself?
I asked a woman, a "high-roller," how she always seemed to cash in on the jackpots. "Oh," she said, " you just go to the new machines." Wow! But how do you know which ones are new? "You just know." I'm sorry, I'm too pragmatic for such an airy answer.
However, I did find what I was looking for in the "Unofficial Guide to Casino Gambling."
I'm still not a millionaire, but I'll tell you I have a lot more fun knowing some of the insider information than I ever did just playing blindly and not knowing what I was really doing wrong.
Read it. You'll love it.

I bought this after my first trip to a casino. I enjoyed myself there but understood that I could have had a better time if I knew how casinos worked. This book is great at giving a basic knowledge of how casinos work and educates you on the many different games and how to enjoy yourself for entertainment purposes. I highly recommend this book if you a planning a trip to a casino for the first time or if you've been to a casino and you would like to expand your overall knowledge and enjoyment. It has basic tips and strategies for all the casino games and is a good starting point. You can always delve further into the games that you like with other books, but this is a quality broad overview of casinos and their games.

pretty good book - a small mixed up in the rule of baccarat
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-05-15
I wonder why on page 170, the baccarat rules states that, for example, when the banker's total is 6, then the banker will draw if the player's new total is 6 or 7. The correct version is: the banker will draw when the "player's third card" is 6 or 7, not the "new total". On page 171 though, the table lists it as "player's third card". Incidentally, I found a bug in the Hoyle's Casino 2007 for PC game, with it drawing a card for the banker when it shouldn't... oh well... isn't the rule somewhat important? It is a very basic set of rule... I wonder if we have that sometimes in the casino and nobody noticed.

Otherwise, the book provides basic rules, strategies, and some interesting stories about the various games. It is a pretty good book for beginners, but make sure you pick another one up just to cross reference. Idiot's Guide and the Unofficial Guide also have a good book on casino gambling.

One thing I am sensitive about the book is that it stresses on etiquette quite a lot. Thing like, "don't hand your money directly to the dealer; doing so is a breach of etiquette and brands you as a greenhorn. After you receive your chips, leave them on the table in front of you". Oh well, a "breach"? so serious? I don't know, I just feel that nowadays, we tend to have too much politeness and etiquette and too little true kindness among human beings, so I don't like to read about etiquette for this and etiquette for that.

Any new book on casino gambling has to contend with a shelf full (virtual or real) of other titles covering the same material, but in Casino Gambling for Dummies, Kevin Blackwood has done a masterful job of bringing a fresh attitude and informative approach that provides solid justification for another title on the topic. This is the 'For Dummies' brand at its best, tackling all the favorites, blackjack, craps, sports betting, as well as many meta-topics (like dealing with the IRS after a profitable run at the tables) with fact-infused, easy-to-read prose that will entertain and inform. People just entering the neon world for the first time will get as much instructional material as they can handle, from rules of the game to strategy. Seasoned gamblers will reap the benefits of Blackwood's expertise and experience at the felt-covered tables around the world. There is particular depth in the blackjack section, likely a product of Blackwood's long resume as one of the top players in the world. The organization is inspired and the writing is top notch, particularly the chapter on horse racing.

Most of the gambling books out there try to sell you on the idea of "beating the house," "making money at the casino," or tell you "You can beat the odds."

This books doesn't do any of that (thank goodness!). In fact, this book doesn't even tell you how to play any of the games. It assumes you already know the basics, but want to take a deeper look at how the different games operates (hence the "Gambling 102" title).

Michael "The Wizard of Odds" Shackleford's "Gambling 102" dives right in with top-notch, in-depth mathematical analysis of each of the most popular table games played in casino. You get the straight facts on how much you can expect to loose (or win) when playing the different games, and making different bets. By taking a statistical look at all the various games and different bets in each game, Gambling 102 provides a wealth of figures that show exactly how big the "house edge" is. For instance, did you know the best bet in the casino is the "Odds" bet on the craps table? The worst bet is on the Big 6 money wheel.

Each game is has it own chapter and is broken do into individual bets. The blackjack section also includes a chart that tells you when to hit, stand, split and double down; so you will always make the best choice when at the table. Tips like these will help maximize your money while at the casino.

I enjoyed reading about the "house edge" on my favorite casino games, and will definitely adjust how I play the next time I go to a casino.

First a disclaimer: I work for the Wizard and I edited this book for him. That said, one reason I work for him in the first place is because I respect that he knows what he's talking about. He's the worldwide authority on gambling math, and his website WizardOfOdds.com is the definitive resource on proper gambling strategy.

Gambling 102 assumes the reader already knows how to play the games, which is why it's not called Gambling 101. In Gambling 102 the Wizard shares his strategies for a whole host of casino games, as well as for NFL sports betting, where some of the most interesting content is. There's also some info on slot machines you haven't read anywhere else, as well as rankings for hands in Texas Holdem poker.

Perhaps the best thing about this book is that it's written by an expert. There are so many gambling books out there written by hacks who are just guessing. Not this one, this is the real deal.

As someone who usually does not play table games at the casinos and was sick and tired of being robbed by the one armed bandit [slot machine], I decided it was time to learn a few new tricks.

And thus I worked to understand Black Jack aka 21. This was one of several books I purchased on the topic and I have poured over 100s of internet articles on card counting, cheating and other issues related to the game.

While I have always known how to play Blackjack informally, I know that only a fool sits down at a table in a Casino and starts placing bets without knowing every nook and cranny of the rules. I knew that the object of the game was to get as close to 21 without going over. I was also aware of splits and other such maneuvers.

Mead's book taught me what I needed to know - filled in the blanks. I would have always thought that one should split two face cards and take the chance that one would get an ACE on one hand and another face or high card on the other. But Mead explains why statistically this is a newbie mistake.

Loaded with invaluable insider information, Beginner to Pro taught me what I needed to know without confusing me with loads of useless facts, figures, charts, statistics and rhetoric. The title takes a very straight-forward, no-bull approach and wastes no time getting to the point.

Putting Mead's advice into action, my first night was very successful and I was quite pleased with the swelling of my bank account as a direct result

Looking To Gain An Edge On The House - READ THIS BOOK

When a person walks into a casino they are looking for one of two things. To win money or have a good time and the latter is always a good thing. So the question is this: Is there a way a person can win in a casino? The answer is: maybe......

How can someone do it? It is not easy but a book has emerged on the market that has made it a lot easier to accomplish. "Beginner to Pro" by Stephen Mead.

This is a no-nonsense book about the game "21" written in a clear concise manner. It begins with a bit of history on the game but does not get to intricate details. What it does emphasize is the teaching of Basic Strategy techniques. Again it does not delve into the mathematics of why it works but provides the lessons and practice charts in order to help a person advance themselves. It is broken down for each individual decision and they are illustrated in a manner which makes learning easy and, more importantly, fun.

Beginner To Pro also gives information about strategies for the advanced player. This includes Card-Counting, Shuffle-Tracking and Money Management as well as giving lessons and self-tests with which to practice before a person actually uses his simple and easy to learn techniques in the real world. He includes both an accurate and a casual system to make counting less like work so you can more enjoy your time at the casino.

Also included in the book are several sections that will keep the reader interested. An F.A.Q. section answers questions most guests have about the casino industry and how it works. Casino Etiquette gets into what a guest should expect and be expected of while visiting a casino. A section on complimentaries is also included to give the player the basics of how they can best utilize the comp system. A section on cheating in the casino is also found in the book on how both a casino and a patron can pull off a fast one. Although not really necessary this section does make for interesting reading.

Can this book make you a winner in a casino? Well, as a Pit Manager I can say this. I have read a lot of "Beat the House" type of books and this one is a little different than most. It tells you right up front about the game reminding you that you may not beat the house every time but patience, dedication, practice, and common sense can make you a winner.

I recommend this book for any casual player looking to gain a little edge on the house.

This is a great book to have and easy to understand. I used his basic strategy for online gambling. I used a combination of "Lose Press" and "Win Press" betting which I learned from this book. Of course you can't count cards online but I didn't need to.

The 1st time I gambled online I doubled my money from $1,000.00 to $2,000.00. The 2nd time I played I started with a thousand dollars and was up to $1,700.00. Then I got to confident and lost the money with a total of only $700.00. I lost $300.00 of my own money. But I didn't panic and I made it up again. I went from $700 back to a thousand, which is what I started with. I took out my money and now I'm studing this book like a College Mid-Term book.

My only only complaint is that the Basic Strategy is changed slightly at different locations. Atlantic City, Reno, Vegas Downtown, and the Vegas Strip are each slighly different. This book only covers the Basic Strategy for the Strip.

True I did lose my money, but I made it back up and didn't lose a dime playing in the long run. This is a very powerful book and I can't wait to learn the card counting chapters.

Mike Orkin's book explains the real odds for all the common casino games, and in the process, shows you it is generally better to leave your money in your own pocket, and just watch. Games covered include roulette, craps, Keno, slots machines, sports betting, blackjack, lotteries and horse races. A great chapter on the Prisoner's Dilemma is included, and covers thecomplex issue of when it is best to be a snicth, and when it is best to be quiet.

An excellent book on casino math

Casino math for the non-mathematician. If you really want to understand the math, it will take some effort to follow if you haven't dealt with probability and statistics in a while or ever. However, I am so tired of people presenting schemes on how to win at craps, roulette, etc: Martingale, anti-Martingale, D'Alembert, contra-D'Alembert, ad nauseam. No matter how you weight a negative expected return, the sum of the series is still expected to be negative. The risk to people who use these schemes unwittingly to gain a series of small "wins" is the guarantee of a single huge loss somewhere in the future - the longer you put it off, the larger it will be. If you didn't understand what you just read and want to, this book is for you. The writing is brisk, bordering on entertaining (if you're into this sort of thing) and not nearly as dull as you'd expect. The previous reviewer covered which games were presented so I won't repeat. Like Stanford Wong, this author's math is accurate - unlike many, many other authors.

If you decide to do any gambling, even a few bucks on your state lottery, consider the price of this book as your first bet. Orkin presents the real odds of most popular gambling games, at least one 'sure fire system' (yes there is such a thing, but you need deep pockets and have to be satisified with a pretty low rate of return), and the effects of the 'house edge'in an entertaining manner and with just a minimum of math. In fact, skipping the math in the book does nothing to reduce the book's usefulness nor your reading enjoyment.

Read this if you think gambling is a solution to money problems. In fact, after going through this highly readable and entertaining book you may be tempted to skip the lottery tickets and put the money in casino stock instead!

....Buy this one! There are other good gaming authors, (Frank Scoblette, Gayle Mitchell, R.D. Elison and Avery Cardoza are some that come immediately to my mind).....but no one is as clear, and as understandable, in explaining the basics of ALL casino games, than John Gollehen! It is explained on the cover
of one of his books, (I believe an early edition of this one,
"Casino Games"), that Mr. Gollehon has a background of being
an engineer, and a teacher. It shows. Perhaps this is what
gives him the edge on explaining the intricate rules of the various games, (especially craps), to the novice.

I have discovered that, for better or worse, I myself have a
very hard head. This means that it's hard for things to get
into my head, for me to understand things. But once they are
understood, they stay with me forever -- and I can explain
them, with a good rate of success, to others. I found the
complexities of baccarat kind of difficult to understand,
(I know, I know....it's the simplest game in the world to
undertand....but not for me)....not, that is, until I read
what Mr. Gollehon had to say...and then, wow! -- I understood it!
(I'm still a bit in the woods with craps....I guess I have to read the chapter on that a bit more carefully)

Interspersed with understandable rules for each major game are
anecdotes of Mr. Gollehon's adventures in gambling, and the
various people he has met. Also included is good money-manage-ment advice.

Mr. Gollehon has written other books, going into single games with more detail, or giving further advice on all games. These are good....but often contain material which first appeared in
"Casino Games". But this book, "Casino Games", in whatever edition, is Mr. Gollehon's first, and I think the best book. If you can't get this book, do buy one of Mr. Gollehon's other books...a comprehensive book on all the games, which repeats the material in this book. (Do NOT buy his: "Gambler's Playbook", which is full of superfluous material, for information. It's a fun book....but not too instructional.)

"Casino Games" though, is a true classic. If you want to learn how to play, and the basic rules, of the most popular casino games, this volume is all you need. It deserves all of its many printings! If there were a Pulitzer, or a Nobel Prize for gambling books, Mr. Gollehon's "Casino Games", in each edition, would win hands down!

Great book - highly recommended

I bought this book as a novice gambler to get a better explanation of casino games and some strategies. The book is great! Gollehon discusses the major casino games by first explaining how the game is played and what actions the player needs to take. Then he discusses the proper strategies to use and the right bets to make. He also tells you what bets not to make.

I especially liked the sections on blackjack, roulette and craps. Easy to read and understand, nice diagrams, and nice discussions on strategy. The only downside to the book was that I wished the section on video poker were more in depth and detailed. He refers you to another text in this case.

Overall, I would recommend this book for anyone going to a casino.

Very informative and useful book

I went to Vegas in August '05. I had a GREAT time but soon realized how woefuly uninformed I was about how to play the games. I prefer table games to machines but the only games I am vaguely familiar with are blackjack and roulette.
This book is a must for anyone who wants a fighting chance at the tables. The strategies for blackjack are worth the price of the book alone. The chapter on craps, which is one of the most fun games in a casino, are also very worthwhile.
My only wish about future editions is that Mr. Gollehon will give his opinion of some of the newer games out there like 3-Card Poker and Caribbean Stud.

A must read before you enter any casino!!!
