Touching poetry that brings about the warmer human side of humanity - "Spilling the Moon" is an anthology of poetry that seeks to do just that. His debut collection of poetry, Schumacher's poems are lyrically vivid and emotionally satisfying, making you wishing for more. A satisfying debut indeed for him and there is hope for more in the future, "Spilling the Moon" is a must for poetry lovers and poetry collections everywhere. Man Dreams He Turns to Snow: I dream the snow reveals secrets to me alone./This snowball my fist forms is a doorknob I turn/And walk into a stalactite cathedral./Its furnishings swirling oceans/Of wind, moon, ice crystal./And I would drown in the undertow/But my snowshovel's a ballast./I hold its wooden handle and my bones float./ My body's elusive as breath./My particles fall/Slow miles to quiet the earth. My nerves, Minuscule icicles./I capture your footsteps/without a heart./Frostbite itself knows I'm a ghost.

Whether you are looking for a gift or just love the Oregon Coast yourself, this book does indeed capture, "the spirit of the Oregon coast". The Watkins have a keen eye for capturing the essence of many aspects of this beautiful place.

The photos are original in both content and perspective and they provide a real sense of place not often found.

This book is a great resource for early childhood educators! I had the great opportunity to take a reading comprehension class from one of the authors, Ruth Shagoury. This book came in handy while planning for my own kindergarten class in how to implement comprehension strategies. I recommend this book to all pre-K and Kindergarten teachers!

A Fascinating History of little known State of Jefferson
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2006-06-01
For history buffs, this volume is a unique collection of photos of the mythical State of Jefferson, the area between Oregon and California. Lots of people don't know that this was a real historical movement, and the people even declared themselves a state, right before Pearl Harbor. A fun look at the history of the movement that started in the 1850s. Some of the photos I enjoyed most were the old ones of the miners and local Shasta tribe and the old towns. Some great ones of Mt. Shasta and old roads and bridges. It makes a great gift for someone who has everything and likes to read, especially history. I highly recommend this book! Lots of fun. I'd love to see a sequel.

True stories of the lives of courageous women
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2005-02-09
The Sum Of Our Past: Revisiting Pioneer Women strives to answer the question: who were American pioneer women, really? True stories of the lives of courageous women, whether determinedly standing their ground or secretly confiding their weaknesses, assemble a composite picture of both the hardship and the joy of daily frontier life. Black-and-white photographs illustrate this memorable tribute that does not overly idealize pioneer women, nor stereotype them as Hollywood media tends to (in the "submissive but sturdy" civilizing woman category, or the "drinking, smoking, cursing" Calamity Jane category), but rather offers an extensively researched yet thoroughly readable portrait that will connect women readers across America with their roots. Highly recommended and rewarding reading, The Sum Of Our Past: Revisiting Pioneer Women is ideal for collegiate level Women's Studies supplement reading lists as well.

This has got to be the most in-depth book on the creation of a Chinatown (or any neighborhood for that matter) in the United States. Anyone interested in community development, the Asian American experience, or Chinese immigration to the U.S. should read this book. Very good black and white photos, maps, and reproductions of old documents.

The riveting story of the 1939 NCAA Champions, the University of Oregon Ducks--a basketball team that "comes along once in a lifetime."

"A must-read for any college basketball fan. It's the story of the most famous group of 'Tall Firs' to ever come out of the Pacific Northwest. The boys finally get their due in this great book by Joe Blakely." --Gary Henley, Daily Astorian

Excellent Summary of Oregon History
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2000-05-21
"That Balance So Rare" is a perfect introduction to the history of Oregon. It can be used as a good general reference for scholars who need a starting point to further their knowledge of this State and region, even though it is accessible to all, and to readers of all ages. The well-written, informative and often humorous text is accompanied by dozens of lovely photographs and illustrations which really evoke Oregon's colorful past. O'Donnell focuses on the nineteenth and early twentieth century, as he correctly sees this period as the time when the political, economic and social features of modern Oregon were essentially defined. Also commendable is his treatment of the local Native Americans, who were pushed from their "garden of Eden" by successive waves of white settlement. Recommended reading for Oregon natives and anyone interested in learning more about this beautiful Pacific Northwest state.
