Florida Books

Regional collections of poetry can often be so narrow that only people that are from or living in that region can appreciate. However, McGrath's "Florida Poems" is an exception. Perhaps it is because Florida is a state that most Americans visit at some point, even if it is just to visit Disney, McGrath doesn't just show the beautiful side of the state or only the ugly side of it either, but a beautiful coherent combination of both. Not only is the colonization of Florida explored, occasionally lamented, but readers step inside Chucky Cheese's and the geography of Florida itself. While there are two long poems in this collection, they are well worth reading, and especially the first one, "A City in Clouds" provides, if not retells, a myth of Florida. I especially enjoyed "William Bartram Beset by Crocodiles," "Hemingway Dines on Boiled Shrimp and Beer," and "Trouble With Miami." I previously read "Road Atlas" just before this collection, which is another book I would highly recommend. So even if you never set foot in Florida itself, "Florida Poems" is an excellent way to visit Florida from the bookshelf.

In my twenty-four years of legal practice in Florida, I have found no pithier or more reliable or more efficiently brilliant guide to practicing law in Florida than this compact book by attorney Henry P. Trawick. In a field marred all too often by muddy thinking and sloppy practice, Mr. Trawick remains the great illuminator, casting aside the darkness of unclear thought, and serving incomparably well the cause of lawyerly clarity. WRONG!! IT'S A GOOD ELEMENTARY PUZZLE BOOK, GOOD FOR A RAINY DAY IN FLORIDA, BUT I THINK MY FATHER-IN-LAW WOULD BE INSULTED!

This is a hardcopy of The Florida Quilt Heritage Project. It IS NOT a how to quilt manual, rather a volume that traces Florida quilts and their makers through the history of the state. It begins with the quilts of early America and ends in 1988. The color plates are lovely and particularly clear for photographs taken before the advent of the digital age. There are black and white vintage photos of early quiltmakers scattered throughout the book. I bought this book for my personal library because I wanted to see how quiltmaking in Florida changed over this period of time.

This book is a wonderful collection of information that can be incorporated into a classroom in all subjects or just as a fun resource in the home!!!!

In the 1920's Florida was successful at marketing itself as the place to vacation away from the winter snow. Transportation in those days was by train, and Florida had three major lines: The Atlantic Coast Line, Seaboard Air Line, and the Florida East Coast.

This book, one of a series from the same publisher, is part history, and part memories. The memories come from a huge collection of photographs, menus, advertisements, maps and other things from the time and the railroads. This is a beautiful collection that makes you wonder where they could have found so many relevent pictures.

Florida rail played an important part of the history of rail in the 1920's. They were extremely active in promoting Florida, establishing a custom that continues today. In fact, Amtrak still operates train service to Miami over some of the same routes depicted in this book.

Recommended to rail buffs and Florida historians.

These guys have put together an incredible value for $9.95. The binding makes it easy to lay open, and reveals a fold out map from the back that makes it possible to easily see where all of these neat places are located.
