Superb novelization of an unusual film!

I first saw the movie Bingo several years ago. It was one of the stranger films for children I had seen. However, when I discovered this novelization, I found a new appreciation for the movie. The author does more than put the actions from the screen onto the page. They give the dog thoughts, motivations, and emotions that are only hinted at in the movie. Confusing events (where did Bingo get that little tent from?) are explained with perfect plausibility. The writing is done in a gripping, lovable style; simple enough for children, but interesting enough for adults as well. 5 stars, A. L. Singer!

A wonderful, mostly light-hearted look at God without any intervening force. She writes directly from her spirit. There is no hint of the "Old Testament" view of God, Jeanie Butler speaks with God as you would a buddy, pal or companion. A great read. Would make a super Chistmas, Chanukah or holiday gift.

A Suprise Visit

I really like the book Bingo Brown's Guide to Romance. The book is about Bingo's love Melissa. Melissa lives in Bixiby, Oklahoma far away from Bingo. Bingo has decided to write a book called Bingo Brown's Guide to Romance which he has decided to dedicate to his baby brother, Jamie. Bingo writes in the book mostly every day but usually has nothing much to write about until one day, he sees Melissa at the grocery store. Amazed, Bingo's first questions are, why didn't she tell me she was coming? And, is that really Melissa? Because to Bingo she seems much bigger. When Bingo knows that it really is Melissa and he sees her, he doesn't know what to say. Why didn't she tell me she was coming, he always wonders. This book is so good that you won't want it to end, my friends that have read it say. I agree.

Have you ever had a long-distance relationship? The book I've been reading is "Bingo Brown, Gypsy Lover." The book is about two kids who were in love and had a long-distance relationship. It was a boy named Bingo that was only like about 13, and a girl named Melissa that was also 13. One time, Bingo had been shopping for a Christmas present for Melissa. Also, Bingo only had three dollars and thirty-nine cents. Bingo was finding out a way to get Melissa a present. So, he asked his parents, but his dad couldn't think of anything. His mom gave Bingo 20 dollars. With 23 dollars and thirty-nine cents, Bingo bought Melissa something. Melissa finally came back and they finally had a close relationship.
I like the book because it was a really interesting book. It reminded me of my cousin because she had a long-distance relationship with her boyfriend. I would like everyone that is in love to read this book. The reason why I think they should read this book it's because it gives good advise. Thats why I liked this book. Also, thats who I think should read it.

Foos Does It Again

Review Date: 2002-11-21
In her 4th novel, Laurie Foos once again creates a world of unexpected events, absurdities, and characters who are doing their best to cope with situations that are way, way weird: but this time she brings a whole new level of maturity and daring to her writing. The main character of "Bingo" is a young woman who's an artist-figure--she makes dolls, and she's great at it--and she has got to reckon with terrible abuse from her past, abuse that was kept secret. The central point is the grotesque, abrud spectre of a grown man who has mysteriously changed into an infant--in a lesser writer's hands, this stuff would just be nutso. But in Foos's hands, it's highly effective. And the subplot of a teen beauty queen giving birth at halftime of a football game is absolutely unforgettable. It's a wild ride, this, and hugely worth it.

A story of an alienated child who is befrended by a being that is phisicaly formed by the childs imagination. This book encouages children to see imagination as a gift that gets stronger with use. Inspiring and magical to the point where I still remember it after aproximatly 20 years. If you find it, get it!

Educational and fun all at the same time. This would be great for a classroom since it comes with many bingo cards and hundreds of chips. I just wish the bingo chips were more substantial than perforated paper, but it works. My five year old has learned many words playing this game. Highly recommend.

A great romp through the fashion world

This is one of the funniest books I've ever read. Brady's characterization of Bingo Marsh is hilarious. He is supposedly based on a real-life character, John Fairchild, former publisher of Woman's Wear Daily, but it doesn't matter. Bingo is a goofy guy. Brady also sends up pretty much all the fashion designers of the 70s and 80s, with the exception of Ralph Loren and Oscar Delorenta, who he for some reason takes it easy on. It is a light read, but also a lot of fun and I am guessing a fairly true representation of the fashion world. Brady (who now writes a celebrity column for Parade Magazine) used to work for Woman's Wear Daily, so I guess he should know.

The irony of this book for me was that I found it at a Goodwill Store.

A Fine Sampler of Favorite Characters with Unexpected Twists
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2004-12-03
In the Wodehouse novels, the plots are merely superstructure upon which to develop hilarious characters, ridiculous situations, side-splitting slapstick and delicious irony about the "upper" classes. In a short story, a Wodehouse plot plays a bigger role.

P.G. Wodehouse obviously had that point in mind when he designed and wrote the stories for A Few Quick Ones. To make the collection a treat, he has given you a sampler of his best characters. Unless you are a devoted Wodehouse reader, you probably don't know about some of these characters. I recommend that you become acquainted because you may discover many Wodehouse classics that you would otherwise have not met.

As a result, the stories will be the most fun for those who already know the stories well. Happy memories from other books and stories will help evoke chuckles where others may only grunt and smile.

But, that wasn't enough. What else could he do? Well, he could vary the way he plotted the stories so that it was less predictable what was coming next. In the process, he indulged himself in creating delicious ironies. At the same time, several of the stories contain as detailed a plot as occurs in any of his novels.

The book's opening story, The Fat of the Land, is an excellent example. Oofy Prosser, the Drone's club millionaire, is determined to win the fat uncles contest . . . and no amount of skullduggery and oiliness is too much for him. Will he succeed?

The Oldest Member stories are a treat for all those who love golf, but many people don't know the stories. Mr. Wodehouse included Scratch Man and Joy Bells for Walter which eloquently show how the divine game and love can go hand-in-hand . . . but not in the ways you expect. There can be danger, too!

The Right Approach develops a theme that Mr. Wodehouse repeats in the book; don't assume that you know what someone else is thinking. Much like Shakespeare's confused lovers, the addled male, Augustus Mulliner, finds himself faced with a horrible contretemps when he attempts to press his suit.

Jeeves Makes an Omelette is the book's only story involving the inimitable Jeeves, and Jeeves swings into action in an unmistakably effective way. The story is made more delightful by one of Aunt Dahlia's daffy schemes.

The inimitable Bingo Little also does his stuff in two stories involving his far from beautiful baby son, Algernon Aubrey Little. In both cases, Bingo's tendency to wager his last cent on a losing nag is the source of the problem. The first is The Word in Season which shows how timing can be everything. The other is Leave It to Algy where Bingo becomes a baby judge.

Big Business is one of the book's best stories. The book's theme relates to whether the male or the female of the species is the stronger and wiser.

A Tithe for Charity is a delicious bit of irony about that famously poor man, Stanley Featherstonehaugh Ukridge, in which he temporarily has some funds.

Oofy, Freddie and the Beef Trust is one of the best developed of the stories and has enough twists and turns to keep you guessing what might come next for days . . . even though you will read the story in minutes.

Unless you don't like to laugh, you should read this book!

By the way, I had to search a bit to find a copy. It was worth the tracking down I had to do.
