Great Bible Study for studying Daniel
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2006-11-16
I am really pleased with this study guide. There are introductory descriptions of what is happening in each chapter of Daniel. Then there is a translation of the chapter, and verse by verse study notes (which no doubt were later inserted into the MacArthur Study Bible).

But the best part of the study would have to b the excellent questions. There is always an introductory question that gets you thinking about some of the material in the chapter. then there are content oriented questions then application oriented questions.

I have used Max Lucado's study on Daniel in the past, but it cannot even begin to compare with the richness of this study. This is the best study guide on Daniel I have come across. I am looking forward to using it for years to come.

Practical Guide to Data Quality
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-03
This books brings a perspective to the data quality issue that I had never truly appreciated. More importantly it gives the reader suggestions as to how to understand the impact of poor data on their organizations as well as specific techniques to make it better. I would recommend this to any person who is looking to improve any aspect of their business as most issues will eventually come back to ensuring quality information to internal and external customers.

For both business leaders and information professionals

I found a lot of great material in this book, appealing to my interests in both business leadership and the more technical aspects of data quality. From the perspective of business leadership, I find it to be a very helpful tutorial and overview of the subject of data quality. It covers a lot of ground, ranging from discussions of data quality management concepts to specific suggestions for implementing data quality programs. From the perspective of a consulting professional, I find it to be an excellent reference, with depth in key topics of interest to process, information and quality professionals. In particular, the discussions about the "data life cycle", the technical definitions of data and the "dimensions of data quality" gave me new insights into data quality management and improvement.

Anyone who has read Brackett previous books knows that his contribution to the data quality arena is fundamental.

This books is important because it states the business case for quality data in clear terms and also provides tools and guidelines to succeed in that long (very long ) journey

Thanks Mike - Great book!

Once again Michael Brackett does a great job. I've often thought that Michael is a perfectionist. However, I see more clearly now that he is a wounded soldier that has experienced the battles of data administration.

You will find this book exciting - I mean is you love the topic. Michael dictates the "right" way to set up data administration and the ramifications of not doing so.

The book is full of suggestions and pointed comments. I believe that Michael knows the subject as well as anyone, and has a vengence to correct the chaos that is currently prevalent in this area.

Buy it! Read it! Then re-read it! Wait about 6 months and read it again until it sinks in. He's right on target with this one.

As a Library Assistant studying for my Library Technician degree this set of books became my best friend. While most colleges or universities will have copies for loan, I found that I oftened added things to the book, thus the importance of having your own copy.

The first volume covers the rules for using and assigning DDC numbers.

The second and third volumes contain the schedules / summaries for actually assigning the DDC number.

The fourth contains the Relative Index (a Library Tech's best friend), which assists in locating appropriate numbers.

I know its a lot of money, but it is well worth it if you are serious about working in this field.

A Helpful Reader For Intermediate Ethicists
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 13 total.

The philosophical issue of abortion has been plagued with the difficulty of situating itself in a way whereby it can be successfully discussed. Often, proponents from a rights-based platform do battle against opponents from a moral-wrong platform and no claims are held in common. Thus, discussions in the literature tend to go past one another making the abortion issue nearly impossible to navigate. Boonin's book begins with a chapter where this problem is addressed and managed, at least to a degree whereby the dozens of arguments concerning abortion can be classified or organized in a logical sequence. He then proceeds to dismiss all arguments against abortion using claims the opponent of abortion accepts.

Boonin uses the Rawlsian approach of reflective equilibrium in his analysis of the abortion issue. Chapters 2-4 concern "rights-based" arguments and the final chapter addresses "non-rights" based arguments. This text is written in true analytic form where non-obvious distinctions are noted and used to clarify weaknesses in all arguments which claim abortion is wrong or impermissible. What Boonin does well in the process is to provide a thorough literature review of all claims made about abortion over the last thirty years.

An overall highlight of this text includes Boonin's ability to discuss weaknesses in arguments by analogy. For example, the now classic "violinist analogy" set forth by J. Thomson, and tacit consent arguments. If you are interested in the topics of arguments by analaogy in general, you will get a kick about of this part of the text! This is a very readable text for one with an intermediate to advanced background in philosophical argument and analysis.

The Best Book on Abortion

I used this book as a way to better structure arguments for debate on abortion. It took the arguments I had, discounted them, and gave me better ones.

A background in informal logic and philosophy will certainly be helpful to the reader here. While this book is really the most comprehensive of its kind, it is not a simple read. I had to take notes just to understand some of the complexities within arguments. Fortunately, I was also able to read this with a friend, which made dense parts of the book easier.

The author is careful in framing the debate and stresses arguing on an opponent's own terms. The author explains the contrast between morally criticizable and morally permissible. Moral relevance is also an essential idea. Further, the author establishes a moraly relevant criterion by brain development that may act as a cutoff point late in pregnancy so that it is still morally impermissible to kill an infant. I recommend previewing the table of contents to get a flavor of argument structure and the arguments covered. I have not encountered a topic that was not covered in the book except for maybe ageism. However, after reading this book my reasoning was developed enough to where I practically laid out a proof as to what ageism was and was not and why it was not a valid objection.

I think this book may have been a little stronger had it looked at more than fetal rights in isolation, but rather also mention that what the question being asked is does the fetus's right to life outweigh the mother's right to her body and vice-versa. Fetal rights arguments are thoroughly explained as well as non-rights based arguments. This book has also been helpful in detailing how the logic works in analogies and why the weirdness objection is not valid. The author also takes apart the violinist analogy and explains why it is poor. Because of this book, even though I am pro-choice since I think it has a stronger argument, I can argue strongly on either side.

Even if you are pro-choice, you should make sure you are pro-choice for logical reasons. I know many pro-choice people that couldn't answer standard pro-life objections. If you are pro-life, this book will challenge all your arguments and at least make you think of the issue differently. I recommend this to anyone who takes a stance on the issue and definitely anyone interested in philosophy, informal logic, and debate.

Bruce Tegner revisited!

*****
BRUCE TEGNER (1929-1985), was a man well ahead of his time, skilled at demystifying the martial arts. As a result, he was never fully "accepted" by most martial arts schools who thrived on perpetuating "the old ways" and traditions for the sake of mystification and appearances sake. Even though he was the California state Judo Champion and sported many black belts in several different and other more obscure martial arts, he was looked down upon as being too "simplistic." What, I ask, is wrong with SIMPLISTIC if it works and saves you or your loved ones from a beating or worse?

CONFESSION: When I was active in Karate (Goju Rhu, Kong-Soo, and Shoto-Kan) in my 20's -- i.e., when I was young, and fast, and flexible -- I, too scoffed at Mr. Tegner's books because the techniques in most of his books did not appear "spectacular" and flashy. According to my Sensi, that was the attitude to have to be "in," and "cool," and "hep!"

But now that I am in my later 60's (NOT so young, fast, or flexible) I have brought out my old Tegner books and find that they are wonderfully APPLICABLE, PRACTICAL, EFFECTIVE, and best of all, COMMON SENSE. Mr. Tegner demonstrated that one does not have to be athletes to protect themselves. (But if you ARE an athlete, so much the better!) In a word, his techniques WORK, even against a larger, stronger, opponent! What more can we ask than that? (Let's be real: how many of us "over-the-hill" martial artists can EFFECTIVELY execute those high and spin-kicks in a self-defense situation while in street clothes?) THANK YOU Mr. Tegner for giving us a safe, sane, balanced perspective!

Unfortunately, Mr.Tegner died at age 56 and is now largely forgotten. I would heartily recommend that anyone interested in practical, sensible, every-day self-defense revisit Mr. Tegner's books. You'll be glad you did.

Mr. Larson does an excellent job of simplifying much of what Six Sigma is about. His knowledge from working with Six Sigma shows and helps the reader understand the concepts involved. I have studied Six Sigma for some time so I don't know if this would be an easy read for everybody, but I found it to be so.

It worked for me!

I have to admit I ordered the book blindly--not quite sure what I was going to learn. Every one of my peers talked about Six-Sigma projects but no one had any concrete examples - all talk no action. I was pleasantly surprised at the common sense approach in the book and the examples Mr. Larson used were perfect for me. I was very impressed with his logical organization of this material. I wish he published a workbook.

Review Date: 2001-07-12
This book is definitely a strong addition to the body of knowledge for Reliability Professionals and for any Company that wants to improve the business competitiveness by improving the product reliability.

The book clearly provides the correct focus on the customer, but it also elaborates on the fact that one customer is the corporate business enterprise.

The book shows the optimum sequence of DfR activities in the development phases. This book also has impressive details for the specific DfR elements. It is also an excellent resource for guidance into specific details.

I like the balance of graphics with text and the graphics added excellent additional understanding.

This is an outstanding Industry leader that has documented the implemented practice in this book.

I did not attempt to verify every mathematical formula.

Technical Content From Author
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2001-05-11
As one of the authors/editors of this book, let me describe the valuable technical content. First, let me impress upon you that this is a rare practical work in reliability written by members of a highly technical company that apply reliability science every day to products. Thus, academics are stressed only as a tool. Therefore, this book has something for everyone. It starts off with a management perspective on how to organize a reliability program. Chapter 1 - 5 overview a unique stage-gate approach to growing reliability. What tools and building blocks are needed from a management perspective to be world-class. What tests to perform when is also key. This approach assures optimum reliability grow in a commercial atmosphere of on-time reliable product deliveries. The book then evolves technically providing essential engineering topics. Chapter 6 describes key information for performing process reliability studies. Chapter 7, is without question a compact chapter on failure analysis that describes each analysis tool including SEM, SAM, EDS, FTIR, FIB, SIMS, etc. The numerous physics of failure analysis examples in diffusion, corrosion, intermetallics, ESD etc are illustrated with detailed FA images. Then Chapter 8 provides what you need to know for reliability statistics. It covers basic definitions for failure rate, CDF, PDF, the main distributions used (Weibull, lognormal, Exponential, Normal). A well-organized chapter presenting key essential reliability statistics needed in industry. Chapter 9 details accelerated testing, the primary historical equations governing temperature, temperature-humidity, vibration and temperature cycle/shock, and electromigration. It provides common sense guidelines for assessing overstressing. How to use these equations for test planning. Advance topics including Step-stress and how to describe life distributions as a function of stress. Chapter 10 on Accelerated Reliability Growth is fairly unique. What tests do you perform and when, using stage-gate and recent accelerated reliability growth mathematics for planning. Growth can be obtained and assessed in a timely manner. Chapter 11 provides the essential for system reliability. Series, parallel, and n of k subsystems as well as predicting reliability using both Bellcore, and 217 methods are addressed. Chapter 12 is an excellent overview of FMEA. Chapter 13 teaches methods for evaluating product risk and conducting risk program management. Lastly, Chapter 14 is an advanced topic, thermodynamic reliability engineering. No other book teaches thermodynamics and how the 1st and 2nd laws are fundamental to the science for Physics-of-Failure. In no other book can a reader find derivations for accelerated testing time compression expressions in fatigue, temperature-humidity, Miner's rule, and diffusion. Additionally, an advanced Arrhenius kinetic topics on logarithmic-in-time aging are provided. This topic as a seminar received the highest ratings at the 2001 RAMS conference. Thank You - Alec Feinberg.
