She was a stealth manipulator hiding behind a sweet, pious facade. I brought some of these indications to my boss's attention & we instantly realized that we, both were her victims!!
To be able to spot 'em a mile away: An invaluable skill.

On an alternate note, there are also scenarios in this book that might make you think of a time or times that you have manipulated others. It's helpful to have these pointed out and be conscious of your own manipulative tactics even if you weren't aware of them previously.

Short and understandable treatise on capitalismReview Date: 2007-07-17
In the preface, the author quotes President Clinton who said in November 2001, less than 2 months after the terrorist attacks of 9/11, "those of us who come from various European lineages are not blameless." Since the victims were of all races and nationalities, such a bigoted, racist, idiotic remark doesn't even make sense except to reveal the depravity of the other side.
The strength of this book is to outline the philisophical and historical basis of Americanism and capitalism. Capitalism is basically the extension of freedom into economic transactions. Socialism removes that freedom. The author also summarizes the collectivist viewpoint equally well and succinctly, no small task if you've ever read any of the drivel from Marx, Hegel or modern socialists. The socialists (under whatever name - liberals, marxists, collectivists, communists, democrats, fascists, etc.) use as their almost exclusive tools name-calling and propaganda. Any opponent will quickly be labelled "bigot", "racist" and other insulting terms. For example in Marx's first communist book he spends the final third insulting other socialists who didn't pay him to write propaganda! Marx also considered women nothing more than prostitutes. Given this, how do you even try to use logic with a Marxist feminist?
Similarly, the socialist control of our institutions such as the universities makes rational discussion well-nigh impossible. I well remember discussing the murder of a crippled, American Jew named Leon Klinghoffer when terrorists hijacked the Achille Lauro cruise ship. The terrorists drowned Klinghoffer by throwing him and his wheelchair overboard. I was driving to a symposium with the most prominent scientist in my field and one of his graduate students. This graduate student said that killing this crippled old American was the "only way to fight back." My mouth dropped open at the stupidity of this remark. It opened further when his advisor, the most prominent scientist in his field, nodded in agreement.
The author summarizes important ideas and includes excellent and useful quotes, examples and stories. The only negative would be that the only solution is to try and educate people by publishing this book. So, distribute copies to friends, family and associates before it is too late. Overall 4 stars.

Don't let right-to-lifers push you around! Get this book!Review Date: 2001-05-16
I have only two criticisms: First, a lot of the information about finding an abortion provider may soon be dated, as it lists active organizations which may come and go. Secondly, the book came out in 1992 before the abortifacient use of methotrexate was well-publicized in the USA. Therefore, it has no info about methotrexate, which is a serious defect, because methotrexate is MUCH easier to get hold of than RU-486, both for doctors and non-doctors.
Given the strong likelihood that Roe v. Wade will be overturned soon, this book is MUCH more important today than it was when it was first published in 1992.

The practical issues of woodlot managementReview Date: 2000-06-05
The major difference between this title and the Hilts et al text is that this book devotes substantially more space to financial, legal, and logistical issues associated with harvesting trees. Conservationists will probably prefer Hilts while the reader focused on income from his or her woodlot will prefer this book.
Neither text goes very far helping the reader identify specific health problems in a woodlot; look more to Pirone et al. for an excellent introduction.
A great book for the serious, passionate woodlot owner.Review Date: 2001-05-05
I disagree with a previous reviewer that the Hilts book is preferable to the conservationist. I bought both books, but found the Hilts book unsatisfying. It is geared more to people who are considering how to return former farmland to a wooded state. It sidesteps the detailed forestry issues, such as thinning overcrowded stands, usually by saying that a forester will provide the information. These are the areas where the Beattie book is especially strong. Since my land is already forested, I appreciated the breadth of information on forest management techniques in the Beattie book. But the book can also be helpful to people who are undecided about whether or not to actively manage their forest land. It provides good background on how northeast forests have developed, and how a woodland would mature without intervention.

At last, a voice for sanityReview Date: 2003-01-12
"Offers factual reporting and balanced perspective on topics that continue to be controversial, confusing, and misrepresented" (Journal of the American Library Association)
"An excellent new entry inbto the field of abortion literature ... accessible to the lay public" (Conscience: An Newsjournal of Catholic Opinion)
"Truly impressive... the information and perspectives presented are invaluable .. for the helping professional (Canadian Counselling Association"
"Balanced and well-researched, with global and culturally sensitive perspectives" (Journal of the American Board of Family Practice)
Compassionate and pragmatic, Abortion and Common Sense cuts through the rhetoric and misinformation of the abortion debate to show how restricting women's access to early, safe and legal services is not only unworkable and unfair but also harmful, illogical and undemocratic. In the context of the Bush administration's reactionary position on sex education, abortion and even contraception together with its defunding of international family planning organizations, the authors' insistence that safe early termination services should be a routine element of good medical care and of an equitable and rational social policy is refreshing indeed! This book is a "must read" for health professionals, teachers, social workers, lawmakers, and everyone else who may harbor a few doubts about the moralities and practicalities of abortion in women's lives. (A Quick Quiz in the early pages of the book to test your knowledge of abortion laws and practices will really surprise you.)

"If you're looking for an intelligent, informative and readable discussion of why abortion needs to be safe, legal and accessible, this is the book for you. The authors focus on the realities of unwanted pregnancies and on women's experiences with legal and illegal abortion in the U.S., Canada and worldwide. An estimated 48 million of the world's women terminate their pregnancies every year, some safely, many dangerously. Others bear unwanted children. In the U.S. four women in ten will have at least one abortion in their lifetime. ABORTION & COMMON SENSE explains why "perfect contraception" is elusive; the reasons for contraceptive failure or nonuse; the process of abortion decision-making; safe and unsafe procedures and their physical and emotional effects; and the legal, medical, and political environments--both domestic and international--that affect women's access to safe services. Demonstrating that restricting legal access is both unworkable and unfair, the authors conclude that safe and early abortion services should be an integral element of good medical care and a rational social policy. A Quick Quiz at the beginning of the book tests your knowledge of abortion laws and practices. You may be surprised!

Recently, we thought she was focusing her attentions finally elsewhere, until we logged on amazon and since the email and passwords were the same from a long time ago, she had logged on and in our browsing history were recent views of books on saving the marriage on "your own" and others. Unbelievable!
These book talks about what a manipulators true 'motives' are (you basically are dealing with someone who wants you to do something or wants you to stop doing something). I especially felt we benefited from a step discussing setting terms, and defining why extraction from a relationship might be your best and healthiest goal.
Its okay though! She told him recently "I've got the goods on you" Little does she know, the POLICE and authorities in the fields on stalking have the "goods on her". Sigh. Read this book! If you have a manipulative ex, parent, spouse, child, it will help you learn to toughen up and learn to change how you respond to people like this. They don't change, but you can.
