In going through his divorce, my fiance and I have been harassed, stalked, guilted and manipulated repeatedly by his soon to be ex. I read the book and we discussed many topics and took several quizzes the book has included. My fiance was surprised at how right on the book was on how he has been repeatedly harassed for years by his ex.
Recently, we thought she was focusing her attentions finally elsewhere, until we logged on amazon and since the email and passwords were the same from a long time ago, she had logged on and in our browsing history were recent views of books on saving the marriage on "your own" and others. Unbelievable!
These book talks about what a manipulators true 'motives' are (you basically are dealing with someone who wants you to do something or wants you to stop doing something). I especially felt we benefited from a step discussing setting terms, and defining why extraction from a relationship might be your best and healthiest goal.
Its okay though! She told him recently "I've got the goods on you" Little does she know, the POLICE and authorities in the fields on stalking have the "goods on her". Sigh. Read this book! If you have a manipulative ex, parent, spouse, child, it will help you learn to toughen up and learn to change how you respond to people like this. They don't change, but you can.

Although I purchased this book in order to better cope with the inevitable interactions with my daughter's father, I discovered much more. Those little problems I was having at work...I was convinced that my high stress levels (with said ex) where causing me to forget things become easily confused & constantly find myself with too much work to do.
She was a stealth manipulator hiding behind a sweet, pious facade. I brought some of these indications to my boss's attention & we instantly realized that we, both were her victims!!
To be able to spot 'em a mile away: An invaluable skill.

This book is a must read if you've been in any sort of manipulative relationship weather it be romantic, friendships, or family related. Not only are the hints helpful in recognizing WHEN you're being manipulated, but it provides the tools necessary to combat manipulative situations. Every aspect of this book applied in my life somewhere and in multiple areas such as work, home, love, family, and friends. A MUST read for everyone as we've all been prey to manipulators at one time or another.

On an alternate note, there are also scenarios in this book that might make you think of a time or times that you have manipulated others. It's helpful to have these pointed out and be conscious of your own manipulative tactics even if you weren't aware of them previously.

Dr.Braiker made understanding "manipulation" easy. Kudos to a book well written. Searching for books to learn what manipulation IS is hard to come by. Sometimes in our fast paced world we are so caught up that the art of manipulation can cause denial even to "seemingly" intellegent people. My work environnment was so covertly manipulated by its owner that I preferred to look the other way, due to building a company, rather than force myself into realizing how detrimental my environnment was. Peoples live have been ruined. Whether your in a bad relationship on a personal or professional level Dr. Braiker will defintely help you understand, and ultimately help you gain Your-Self back.

Highly recommended reading for students of Economics and Political Science, Why Worry About The Gradual Loss Of Our Liberties?: What We All Must Know About True Capitalism And Creeping Socialism by David L. Wood is not about civil liberties per se; but rather, it is a political and economic treatise which embraces the success at Capitalism and blares a strongly needed "wake up" call demanding acknowledgment of socialism's failures. Decrying socialism's support as largely unwarranted and due to mental indoctrination, Why Worry About The Gradual Loss Of Our Liberties? is a quite sharply worded yet passionately thoughtful defense of capitalist economics and a public policy manifesto.

Short and understandable treatise on capitalism
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2007-07-17
The author, Dr. Wood, has written a short treatise on why the transition of the US system to socialism matters.

In the preface, the author quotes President Clinton who said in November 2001, less than 2 months after the terrorist attacks of 9/11, "those of us who come from various European lineages are not blameless." Since the victims were of all races and nationalities, such a bigoted, racist, idiotic remark doesn't even make sense except to reveal the depravity of the other side.

The strength of this book is to outline the philisophical and historical basis of Americanism and capitalism. Capitalism is basically the extension of freedom into economic transactions. Socialism removes that freedom. The author also summarizes the collectivist viewpoint equally well and succinctly, no small task if you've ever read any of the drivel from Marx, Hegel or modern socialists. The socialists (under whatever name - liberals, marxists, collectivists, communists, democrats, fascists, etc.) use as their almost exclusive tools name-calling and propaganda. Any opponent will quickly be labelled "bigot", "racist" and other insulting terms. For example in Marx's first communist book he spends the final third insulting other socialists who didn't pay him to write propaganda! Marx also considered women nothing more than prostitutes. Given this, how do you even try to use logic with a Marxist feminist?

Similarly, the socialist control of our institutions such as the universities makes rational discussion well-nigh impossible. I well remember discussing the murder of a crippled, American Jew named Leon Klinghoffer when terrorists hijacked the Achille Lauro cruise ship. The terrorists drowned Klinghoffer by throwing him and his wheelchair overboard. I was driving to a symposium with the most prominent scientist in my field and one of his graduate students. This graduate student said that killing this crippled old American was the "only way to fight back." My mouth dropped open at the stupidity of this remark. It opened further when his advisor, the most prominent scientist in his field, nodded in agreement.

The author summarizes important ideas and includes excellent and useful quotes, examples and stories. The only negative would be that the only solution is to try and educate people by publishing this book. So, distribute copies to friends, family and associates before it is too late. Overall 4 stars.

this book is absolutely wonderful, and i am so glad to have added it to my library. its incredibly educational, and really no woman should live without it. i highly recommend it, especially if you are a woman seeking advice concerning menstruation, pregnancy and the like. this book will certainly be a life long reference for me, especially seeing how our reproductive rights as women are continuously put on the stand. this book gives me hope, and lets me know that there are in fact options outside of a coathanger, and the legal process, that are safe and effective.

Every pro-choice woman should own a copy of this book. Besides telling how to find safe, professional abortion providers, this book also how to do your own abortion WITHOUT killing or maiming yourself.

I have only two criticisms: First, a lot of the information about finding an abortion provider may soon be dated, as it lists active organizations which may come and go. Secondly, the book came out in 1992 before the abortifacient use of methotrexate was well-publicized in the USA. Therefore, it has no info about methotrexate, which is a serious defect, because methotrexate is MUCH easier to get hold of than RU-486, both for doctors and non-doctors.

Given the strong likelihood that Roe v. Wade will be overturned soon, this book is MUCH more important today than it was when it was first published in 1992.

Excellent Information

Review Date: 2005-07-20
Even though some of the information will now be dated, the book is excellent and I can't recommend strongly enough that every pro-choice (pro-child, pro-family; they are all the same thing) woman own this book. It documents very clearly the history of abortion and abortion laws and techniques. It describes procedures clearly; a must for anyone facing the current misinformation both sides of the abortion fight are often guilty of. It also has invaluable information on menstrual extraction. The book clearly cites tragic instances of women desperate for legal, safe abortion who have killed themselves trying unsafe "folk" methods. It makes clear that we want our daughters to choose between better options in the future, rather than face a frightening return to the past. The book is well-written, well-organized, and does not carry a proselytising flavour in any way. It is very objective in tone, which I appreciate, without being too technical, medical, or dry. It is also clearly footnoted and every source checks out.

If you own even a few acres of New England forest, you should read this book. "Working With Your Woodland" gives a thorough introduction to forestry for the landowner. Even if you do not own any woodlands, and are just curious about the forestry profession, this book will acquaint you well with the issues. From the history presented of the New England forest through Forest Management to their postscript on stewardship, the three authors present their information clearly and sensitively. Highly recommended.

The practical issues of woodlot management
Helpful Votes: 31 out of 31 total.
Review Date: 2000-06-05
This book is a basic introduction to woodlot management with a focus on the forest ecosystem, basic valuation metrics for trees, and tax and other financial concerns associated with selling your trees.

The major difference between this title and the Hilts et al text is that this book devotes substantially more space to financial, legal, and logistical issues associated with harvesting trees. Conservationists will probably prefer Hilts while the reader focused on income from his or her woodlot will prefer this book.

Neither text goes very far helping the reader identify specific health problems in a woodlot; look more to Pirone et al. for an excellent introduction.

A great book for the serious, passionate woodlot owner.

Review Date: 2001-05-05
Having bought a woodlot in the past year, I praise this book based on real-life experience. This book is an excellent introduction to the forestry terms and practice. I learned all the background I needed to understand a forest management plan and discuss it intelligently with a professional forester. This book discusses forestry issues in detail, but without getting bogged down in arcane minutiae.

I disagree with a previous reviewer that the Hilts book is preferable to the conservationist. I bought both books, but found the Hilts book unsatisfying. It is geared more to people who are considering how to return former farmland to a wooded state. It sidesteps the detailed forestry issues, such as thinning overcrowded stands, usually by saying that a forester will provide the information. These are the areas where the Beattie book is especially strong. Since my land is already forested, I appreciated the breadth of information on forest management techniques in the Beattie book. But the book can also be helpful to people who are undecided about whether or not to actively manage their forest land. It provides good background on how northeast forests have developed, and how a woodland would mature without intervention.

I'd like to add a recommendation for a companion book: Reading the Forested Landscape by Tom Wessels. See my review there.

The book does not go into great detail but it is worth reading because it explains everything you need to understand how a manufactoring company has to work in order to achieve full controll over its business processes. The examples are very simple but very usefull. It is also a good book for people that do not have a background in manufacturing because it explains everything you need in order to understand the main subjects.

I thought the book was easy to read and very interesting - in short, it is excellent. A must for those pursuing a production career.

I'm still mourning James Marshall's death. Reading "Yummers" gives you an inkling of what bibliophiles miss. His gentle humor, comical yet endearing illustrations. And yet, always wisdom behind the joke. But he never beats you over the head with it. I've read all of James Marshall's books (over and over) and I never get tired of them. At least we've got something to remember him by.

This book is very diffeent if you like to think out of the box. It could be explaining a lot of things going on in our histry right now, or it could be a bunch of propaganda. The guy seems to know what he is talking about. There are 13 cases of mind control experimentation in the book and I feel sorry for a lot of these people. At the end there are some healing tactics and some other interesting things from his wife. The book is different and I guess thats what I like it. Stewart knows his stuff or he has one hell of an imagination.

I've read this book thirteen times already and I'm purely fascinated to read the thirteen different case scenarios written by the very person who is the subject of the case in their own words in a forward and honest manner. Stewart Swerdlow follows each with an analysis of the events and experiences of the person and explains the specific programming pertinent to the specific mind-controlled and programmed person. The 2nd-5th parts of the book further explains programming. I recommend this book for anyone who is looking for answers in understanding their strange experiences or that of someone they love.

As a school psychologist working with children with all types of social skills concerns, this book is a must. The children do not have to put things into words as they just put the item in the pocket they feel it belongs. The items are very short and can be read to the children, as well. It is so visual and concrete that a child can express what bothers him without the stress of trying to put it in words is no longer there to bother him. Students seem to really like it. I have had a couple ask to play that control game again. This was definitely worth the money.

If this book could have a subtitle, I think, HUG A PARENT, they neeed love too, would be an excellent choice. However, because I cannot "unring the bell", I would love this author to write a sequel; 51 reasons to have children and the million little blessings they impart on our troubled souls. I would buy that book as well. Thanx Joe for a wonderful, well written peek into the lives of parents.

Compassionate and pragmatic, Abortion and Common Sense cuts through the rhetoric and misinformation of the abortion debate to show how restricting women's access to early, safe and legal services is not only unworkable and unfair but also harmful, illogical and undemocratic. In the context of the Bush administration's reactionary position on sex education, abortion and even contraception together with its defunding of international family planning organizations, the authors' insistence that safe early termination services should be a routine element of good medical care and of an equitable and rational social policy is refreshing indeed! This book is a "must read" for health professionals, teachers, social workers, lawmakers, and everyone else who may harbor a few doubts about the moralities and practicalities of abortion in women's lives. (A Quick Quiz in the early pages of the book to test your knowledge of abortion laws and practices will really surprise you.)

"If you're looking for an intelligent, informative and readable discussion of why abortion needs to be safe, legal and accessible, this is the book for you. The authors focus on the realities of unwanted pregnancies and on women's experiences with legal and illegal abortion in the U.S., Canada and worldwide. An estimated 48 million of the world's women terminate their pregnancies every year, some safely, many dangerously. Others bear unwanted children. In the U.S. four women in ten will have at least one abortion in their lifetime. ABORTION & COMMON SENSE explains why "perfect contraception" is elusive; the reasons for contraceptive failure or nonuse; the process of abortion decision-making; safe and unsafe procedures and their physical and emotional effects; and the legal, medical, and political environments--both domestic and international--that affect women's access to safe services. Demonstrating that restricting legal access is both unworkable and unfair, the authors conclude that safe and early abortion services should be an integral element of good medical care and a rational social policy. A Quick Quiz at the beginning of the book tests your knowledge of abortion laws and practices. You may be surprised!
