An Excellent Guide to Improving Your Personal and Professional Life

"Leadership is an active, living process. It is rooted in character, forged by experience, and communicated by example." Those are the opening sentences of this book--and they capture this author's message perfectly.

Books on leadership are plentiful, but Baldoni makes his leadership message personal. He's chosen a great title, of course, and the book itself is an easy read. All of the vital points concerning leadership are here. But to me the second half of the book is the most interesting section, as the author gives examples of outstanding leaders from all walks of life. These real-life stories bring to life the concepts we've heard about so often.

One other thing I like about Personal Leadership: the author includes an "Action Planner" at the end of every chapter. The questions he asks (for which the reader has to supply the answers) provide an excellent opportunity for a self-evaluation of one's personal journey along the leadership path.

I found this book to be practical and chock full of useful stories that bring home leadership points in the book. Personal Leadership is an excellent book for front line supervisors. It provides many useful frameworks for things leaders may already know but don't have a way to be systematic about. It also brings out issues new leaders may not have even considered but are important to their success. As a trainer in leadership I have seen many books on leadership but few that I feel would be as useful as this one in helping new leaders hit the deck running.

Down-to-earth wisdom

Despite how common the word is in business lexicon, `leadership' can be perceived and defined in many ways - from an executive title to behavior that influences others. What's not in question is that many of us aspire to become leaders, and aren't sure where to start.

In Personal Leadership: Taking Control of Your Work Life, author John Baldoni cuts through the intellectual theory of leadership, and shares with readers the inspirational essays, stimulating questions and practical tips that can help anyone cultivate valuable skills on his or her journey towards leadership. His blending of down-to-earth wisdom and powerful anecdotes (all presented in bite-sized pieces) make for an easy-to-read book that's a good addition to the reference libraries of businesses large and small.

Rather than falling into the traditional trap of citing only corporate executives as leaders, Baldoni provides examples from the spectrum of life - including Swiss watchmakers, educators, film directors and U.S. presidents - allowing readers to notice the leadership skills within, rather than see leadership as simply a title assigned by a corporation to a select few. Each chapter of Baldoni's book also includes exercises and action planners that transition concepts into action, which is the foundation of any successful personal-development practice. (As Baldoni writes, "Leadership begins with the individual!")

The "stories from the front lines" make a lasting impression, serving as windows into the world of leadership that showcase the challenges and triumphs, and the required mindset and mettle. Curiously, all but one of the featured leaders is based in the Detroit, Michigan-area, making one wonder if there's something extra-special in the water supply out there, or if Baldoni's reach extended only so far. This is not to diminish the information that he generously offers in the book, but an element that stands out as unusual in a book that otherwise features a nice depth. Some prospective or actual readers of Baldoni's book might see this as credibility-busting, but that would be a self-limiting mistake.

Any current or aspiring leader - regardless of organizational title - will find gems of new information or poignant reminders in this book, and will return to its pages for inspiration and fine-tuning.

Bottom line: Personal Leadership is recommended reading.

My first response was, "Not another book about leadership!" But I was surprised to discover a very special book with an amazing amount of practical and inspiring information packed into 219 pages. His framework of insights for leaders is coupled with a selection of leadership profiles of real-life leaders.

Most leadership books stay at 30,000 feet. Baldoni brings us down to ground level. He tells us what we actually have to do to be effective leaders at work, at home, or any other place. He hones in on the values, beliefs, and personality that are found in effective leaders, making a distinction between constructive leaders and destructive leaders.

The stories about leaders provide a wonderful variety of types of leadership and kinds of organizations. In the profiles a CEO of a Fortune 100 business, two startup entrepreneurs, a school principal, a college coach, and a military commander, we see the same basic principles applied over and over again. It is a pleasure to have the nuts and bolts of day-to-day leadership and real-life examples together in one easy to read book.

Adding to the book's appeal is the way Baldoni has embedded the process of reflection into the book. He explains it as an essential leadership skill and then he demonstrates the skill by asking the reader reflective questions at the end of each short chapter. These questions had me thinking about what the chapter meant to me and what I could learn about leadership.

The author's engaging writing style is not often seen in management texts. The mix of advice and stories is done with humor and flows easily from topic to topic and chapter to chapter. I recommend this book highly.

Phase 1 Low Carb Diet Cookbook as well as Phase 11 Low Carb Diet Cookbook by Better Homes and Gardens, are geared for every kind of cook.

Simple ingredients to find (not so with other low carb books, i.e. South Beach, as I had to go to three stores before I got all ingredients for one dish)!

Recipes are easy to follow, and simple enough to make for the novice cook.
Items are visually attractive, tasty, not dry, bland and uninviting as some low carb recipes tend to be.

The fats included might be a bit high for those following diets that sharply cut fats along with carbs, though one can adjust them to suit with little effort.

All of the recipes I have made were so tasty, that even some non-low carb dieters requested them when I made them for potluck dinners!!!

I think the concepts of the Phase Cookbooks are wonderful. Often times when you get a low carb cookbook you have to search and search for recipes you can actually use in the phase you are in. With this there is no guessing and most are very simple. I've used several of these receipes so far and four out of five were delicious!

Grilled Bass with Strawberry Salsa, yum!! Lots of good salsa recipes you can use for fish, chicken or just dipping with fat free chips. Loved this book!!!

Pliny (23-79 AD.) "If a man makes water upon a dog's urine he will become disinclined to copulation." (Yeah, but what about the Dog?) He also suggests that; "If a woman's loins are rubbed with blood taken from the ticks upon the back of a black wild bull, she will be inspired with an aversion to sexual intercourse. (Yes, and so too, the tick gatherer, and tick blood spreader - I would imagine.)
This book The Pill by Bernard Asbell besides being full of useful and energizing information is more than interesting. It is a social as well as a religious experience. One thing is for certain - trying not to have babies has been going on for centuries; thank God.

I almost couldn't put this book down and read it in a few days. Asbell does a really good job of making the story of the Pill at once comprehensive and entertaining. He develops all the various characters involved in the story: priests, scientists, activists, doctors, funders of research and ordinary citizens in a way that makes gives you a sense of familiarity with their personalities and psychologies. He shows how risk taking, serendipity, and passion led some to succeed and left others virtually anonymous. He gives fair treatment to many of scientific disputes that went on during the invention of the pill and introduces us to the future of contraception. The way he describes science is very accessible and also honest; he does not idolize scientists or science and shows the pitfalls involved in research.
I don't think I fully appreciated how revolutionary the Pill was before I read this book. It has made me much more grateful and informed about the options I can now make. He presents the story with the gravity it deserves.

This is a pretty good book and doesn't deserve to be out of print. The author's writing technique isn't scintillating but the book is very readable nonetheless. I was a little disappointed by the lack of biochemical details of how the pill works but other readers may see this as a blessing. The book does a superb job of making the people involved come alive. The descrption of a pre-birth control pill world which is unimagable to most people is simiarly excellent.

Printed by Oxford University Press, Pirone's Tree Maintenance has the heft and durability to withstand countless consultations. The text is informative beyond measure and very readable. The photography is black-and-white and didn't reproduce all that well, especially for small and detailed items; photos range from 'Fig. 7-15. Brush chipper and dump truck' (oh please...) to a hollowed-out, decayed Silver Maple resting comfortably on what appears to be a four-bedroom Dutch Colonial (illustrating the section on Identifying Hazard Trees). Good section on insects and diseases (with the caveat that the photos aren't that great); excellent tree-specific section. You will learn a lot from this book--it's a must if you want to rely on another source besides the local tree guy with a chainsaw.

Pirone's Tree Maintenance (Seventh Edition) is one of about a half dozen books I keep within arms reach. While Parts I and II provide a fantastic amount of information on the care of trees and identifying problem, it is Part III that I use the most. This section lists common insects, diseases, and problems associated with specific tree species. While by no means comprehensive, it is an excellent place to start when trying to figure out what is going on with a tree.

Like any such book, be careful when looking at the pesticide recomendations. Chemicals come and go and the labels change (and the authors remind you of that). There are several products that are off the market that are listed in this book.

Although old but this book is really one of the top books in the area of power system stabilization and control.
The book provides the principles of electrical machine modelling which are explained with many examples. The last chapter gives a brief idea of modeling of multi-machine systems.

Great Little Primer for Load Dispatchers
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2003-07-09
Part of my job with a large midwestern power company is to train load dispatchers. I'm constantly on the lookout for good material. Power System Operations by Miller is one of the best textbooks I've found to train non-degreed system operators. I used the first edition myself when I was a new load dispatcher, and I found it to be a great self-study guide.

One problem with the latest (third) edition, there are no answers provided for the questions at the end of the chapter. This is no problem if the book is used in a classroom as the instructor should be able to figure them out. But for self-study it is absolutely necessary for the publisher to provide the answers to the chapter tests. Also, there are a few typos in the chapter on reactive power that could be very misleading to students who are already struggling.

The book concentrates mainly on transmission but the first four chapters are useful for distribution dispatchers as well. They provide a good foundation for teaching system overview, AC fundamentals and reactive power. The chapters on protective relaying, while still giving a basic overview of the various schemes, are a bit dated because they don't cover some of the latest microprocessor-based relays that have been replacing the electro-mechanical ones over the past several years.

This is not the be-all and end-all for training system operators, but when combined with on-the-job training and other supplementary material it can help establish a solid training program.

Solid Introduction to Power System Ops

I purchased this book because it was reccommended reading for NERC certification. To pass that exam, it is enough to spend 3-5 days studying the NERC operating manual. There were no questions from either this book or the others reccommended for the exam.

With that out of the way, I thought Power System Operations covered a nice range of topics concisely and in non-technical terms. It is not comprehensive enough to be a good reference book once you become knowledgable in this area. The material is not presented with mathematical rigor. However, if you work for a utility, and are seeking a non-intimidating introduction to power system ops, this book is perfect. As a sidenote: There is also a wealth of information available on the reliability region and ISO websites that will complement this text.

Power System Operation provides a well structured knowledge base and reference for the new and seasoned power system operator. It will serve as the foundational and theoretical basis for many of the experienced based knowledge that is passed from operator to operator. I would recommend that all power system operators be equipped with this book as must read material.

A Must Read

Review Date: 2008-09-12
First a disclaimer. More than thirty years ago, Dr. Lown was one of my teachers at the Brigham and Women's Hospital where I was a young, inexperienced fellow in cardiology. And what a privilege it was to watch this master clinician, consummate healer and deeply moral mentor at work.

A few years later, with Russian cardiologist Eugene Chazov, Dr. Lown founded the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War, which, within a few short years was awarded the Nobel Peace prize. "Prescription for Survival" is Dr. Lown's gripping memoir of that time, an amazing chronicle of how a few committed doctors set out to confront the specter of nuclear holocaust, organized tens of thousands of supporters and helped save civilization from annihilation.

This is a "must read" book. It's message of hope, of the centrality of mass action, of the necessity to speak truth to power, of persistence in the face of daunting challenges, is particularly pertinent at this juncture in the history of our planet. At a time when once again events seem to be spinning out of control, when not only rampant wars, but catastrophic climate change, ecologic degradation and unbridled militarism all menace our survival as a species, the lessons of this book need to be promulgated, adopted and utilized if we are to leave a habitable planet to our children and grandchildren.

Buy "Prescription for Survival," tell your friends to buy it, and take its lessons to heart. As Dr. Lown writes at the close of this absorbing, hard-to-put-down book: "This memoir is ultimately a call to action. Only those who see the invisible can do the impossible. This book makes visible a wide terrain wherein action for another world fit for human beings becomes both challenging and possible."

Momentous

Review Date: 2008-09-11
On the eve of this historic presidential election, Dr. Bernard Lown has given us a momentous, lucid, and gripping book.

By all counts, Lown is an extraordinary man: one of the great physicians of the 20th century, a Nobel Laureate, an inventor whose work has saved thousands and thousands of lives. All that is true. What's less well known is that he is a STORYTELLER; a master of narrative. He's a writer in the tradition of Chekhov and the other great physician-writers of the last century. The dude can spin a yarn.

It's rare for so keen and incisive an intellect to convey itself this warmly and skillfully, and with this much humanity. (You don't see Noam Chomsky writing books like this). Lown is keenly aware that one of the first tasks of both a good doctor and a good writer is to compel his subject's attention.

And the book is so timely, so important. As the planet approaches a tipping point the likes of which it hasn't seen, we are facing into the realities of climate change, oil shocks, daunting economic and political instability, resource shortages, a soaring global population, an increase in militarism and state-sponsored violence, and on and on. It's difficult to hold in our minds the magnitude of what we're facing, and its even more difficult to imagine that we can actually do anything about it.

That's why Lown's book is so important. It shows that we--any of us, all of us--can dare to take action, can dare to make a difference. The book tells the story of International Physicians for the Prevention of Nucelar War, from its origin as an idea in 1980, to its recognition by the Nobel committee in 1985, at the height of nuclear tensions between the U.S.A. and U.S.S.R. Within that striking story, Lown makes larger points about the ways in which hope can emerge in the darkest hours, and how much is possible when citizens take action within and across national borders.

This is a powerful book. It radiates a kind of moral gravitas that's palpable. Lown writes out of a deep sense of urgency, but he does so beautifully, with a feel for language and image and rhythm, and a sense of the importance of these things. After a lifetime of clinical practice as a cardiologist, attending to the rhythms of the human heart, Lown has learned his way around it. He writes from that heart and to it--about matters of great consequence, with great wisdom.

An Extraordinary Book by an Extraordinary Human Being

One doesn't expect an eminent cardiologist to speak out on nuclear war, to organize a global network of physicians to confront the issue, and to make its enormous risks clear to the world; and ultimately to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts. This wonderful book by that very cardiologist, Dr. Bernard Lown, recounts this compelling saga. It is a powerful book by any standard, made even more so by the grace, fluidity, and richness of his prose, surely the equal of our nation's finest writers (further enriched by apt quotations from the great poets and playwrights of the ages). Every caring, concerned citizen of the globe will want this book at the top of his or her reading list. (Full disclosure: I was a patient of Dr. Lown's for some 20 years; I give him credit for the fact that I'm here today to praise not only his idealism but his skill as a physician.)

I'm someone who often purchases important books, skims them quickly and then shelves them, with every intention of getting back to the task of educating myself about the subject. Somehow, I never manage to open the book again, so it sits there among other such volumes, while I turn to literary efforts that may be more trivial, but promise to be more fun. So I was surprised when I started flipping pages to find that the author had turned this critical issue into a detective story. Instead of being bored by didactic lessons that I agreed with, I found myself reading until 2AM to follow the story of these brave doctors who wouldn't take no for an answer. I thought I knew a lot about the subject, but this story surprised and fascinated me, made me laugh and made me angry too.

A VERY SPECIAL COOKBOOK!

I own a lot of cookbooks - recipes from all over the world. But this is the one, when I want a delicious dish which doesn't take a great deal of time to make, I turn to again and again. The recipes are created with a lot of health-consciousness without sacrificing aesthetic standards for excellent culinary art.

There are also informative sidebars on ingredients, i.e., barley, garlic, potatoes, etc., called "To Your Health," "Encore," (what to do with leftovers) and "Take It Along" (how to pack and serve certain items on outings).

After I try a new recipe, I usually note on the cookbook page my rating of it. Recipes in this book have consistently high ratings, and my special favorite is "Fish, Potato and Vegetable Stew". This is made with cod, haddock or other mild white fish fillets. It is a real treat.

When I don't want to go wrong, this is the book I turn to. When I want something that is a real winner, likewise.

I highly recommend it!

I have had this cookbook since Prevention first published it. Although I have many cookbooks, this one is my absolute all-time favorite for quick, healthy, delicious meals. Every week, when I plan my meals, I use at least 3 out of this book. I can't say enough good about it. The food is low fat, healthful, easy and quick to prepare and doesn't require alot of exotic ingredients. In fact there is a list in the introduction of the basic foods you need to have on hand to prepare the dishes in the books. There are even suggestions on the side for the use of leftovers. Get this one! I'm getting another for my daughter.

My husband and I both love to cook, and we have about six dozen cookbooks representing a wide range of cuisines. Yet I keep coming back to this one cookbook again and again. I've had it for about five years, I think, and probably a month hasn't gone by that I haven't cooked at least a few recipes out of it -- which I can't say for most of our cookbooks.

The meals are generally pretty easy to prepare; very few of the recipes require any special equipment or techniques that would throw off the beginner. There's a nice variety, with at least a few real "keepers" in every category (e.g., soups, sandwiches, stir-fries, meat-and-potatoes, etc.).

I especially like the fact that they give nutritional information for each dish, although I wish they included fiber (and sorry folks, no carb counting). The dishes are lower in fat and lower in calories than usual, and yet they don't require a lot of silly, time-consuming techniques to do so.

Also, many recipes have sidebars with hints about variations on the recipe, or how to use the leftovers to make a new dish.

The one thing I find a little annoying -- or more, amusing -- is that some of the pictures do NOT look like the finished dishes. The funniest one is the recipe for microwave polenta: the picture clearly shows *grill marks* on the polenta, yet the recipe never involves an oven or broiler, much less a grill. But the important thing is that the recipes come out tasting good.

My two favorites are Moroccan Chicken and Indonesian Rice with Chicken. The only recipe that really bombed (and we've probably tried 80% of them by now) was the Javanese Tempeh Curry. But the picture looks so delicious... haha.

Buy this book while you still can; I'm planning to buy all the used copies I can find to give to all my friends and relatives.

This cookbook is great for those of us who are busy, but who want healthful and tasty meals. The dishes are quick and easy to prepare and use common pantry items. The nutritional content is provided for each recipe, which is great if you are watching your calorie or fat (or any other) intake. Another feature I like is a "To Your Health" box that provides interesting and pertinent nutritional information about some of the ingredients used in the recipe. I rented this from the library but plan on purchasing it--even though it is out of print now!

When it comes to automatic controls, Dr. Smith is incredibly knowledgable. Unfortunately, this does not always come through in this book. The book suffers from lack of sufficient worked examples to assist the reader in gaining competency in this area. At times, the theory takes leaps that leave the reader wondering how they did that. As with most engineering texts, once the reader fills in the missing steps the concepts become clear and logical. Overall, this is a worthwhile text from which the subject can be learned.

Truely a text on Automatic Process Control

Note the word 'truely'. Just the section on Installed Flow Characteristics on control valves is enough to worth buying this book. The writers solved the mystery on why an inherent "Equal Percentage" control valve behaves "Linear" when installed; and why an inherent "Linear" control valve behaves "Quick Opening" when installed in most chemical processes being controlled (should factors such as the over-sized factor, the fraction of the dynamic pressure taken by the control valve, and the rangeability of the control valve are overlooked). The writters did it by vigorously deriving the Installed Characteristics from the universal definition of "Cv" (first introduced by Masoneillan in industry, now adopted by ISA), fluid mechanics, and simple algebra, from which the installed gain at various percent-opening of most control valves is derivable analytically by math. Excellent job done. I have used this book since mid 1980's in my career as an Instrument Engineer and recently I used it in writing engineering specifications for control valves. For 15 years before mid 1980's, a book like this has been in my search list. While control theory can be easily found in many texts, unique relevant work experience of writters cannot. Whether you are a Chemical Engineer or not, if your work is related to Automatic Process Control, I will recommend you to buy this book. Before it gets sold out, I am going to buy the lattest edition tomorrow since I believe this book will be useful for at least the next 50 years from now in any process control industry.

An Outstanding Text on Automatic Process Control

This book really delivers what it promises: A practical guide for understanding and implementing industrial control strategies, with many examples derived from the authors experienced.

I am an Industrial Practitioner of Process Control. I have been working for more than 16 years as an Instrumentation, Automation, and Process Safety and Control Engineer for the Oil & Gas Industry.

The book is written in a very clear and readable way. I am not a Chemical Engineer (I am an Electronics Engineering Grad) but my work requires me to deal with chemical engineering issues relates to process control in a day to day basics. This book has been an excellent reference in my job, and is always available in my desk. If a non-chemical engineer can benefit from this book, I can bet that any chemical engineering student or industrial practitioner dealing with automatic process control will find this text most useful.

If you are looking for an excellent book, highly practical and applied, this is the one you should get.

Excellent Introductory Process Controls Book

This is an excellent book not only for new students to process control but also for the experienced practitioner in need of a handy basics reference book.

I am a controls engineer with 9 years of experience in designing advanced control and optimization strategies for the chemical industry. I have several excellent texts on chemical process control (Marlin, Luyben, Stephanopoulos, Camacho, Ogunnaike etc.) and I must say that this book is a welcome addition to my collection.

Prof Chau adopts an informal conversational style of writing that immediately puts one at ease. The practice problems are relevant and useful hints for their solution are provided in the book itself. I especially like the approach of using MATLAB to accomplish the drudgery of, for e.g., frequency response plots or state space solutions.

A great book for its price and one that should be on your shelf!

"Controls" is undoubtedly a very difficult subject for newcomers/beginners but Pao Chau knows well the roadblocks to learning and understanding and bypasses them by getting to the heart of the core, crucial matter without dismissing any vital points. This book is actually a lot easier reading than initially expected, and is presented in such a way as to lead to continual reinforcement of previous material while smoothly progressing to the next topic. It is not verbose and packs a wealth of information in lean, efficient chapters. If you are taking an introductory Process Controls class or simply need a review this is probably the best book out there for you!

A excellent and readable text for professionals looking for a brief reference on Process Control, who also want to learn to use Matlab, one of the most powerful engineering tools available for Process Control.

Each chapter concludes with problem sets, to which hints or solutions are provided. Despite the reliance on Matlab, theory and analysis of Process Control are well presented.

I have been working for more than 16 years as an Instrumentation, Automation, and Process Safety and Control Engineer for the Oil & Gas Industry, and I found this book to be very useful to learn how to use Matlab to help me solve day to day issues on my job.

Newcomers and students will also find this book useful it their area of interest is Process Control.
