TOC meets the service sector, HOORAH!

Mr. Ricketts has delivered a practical users guide for TOC in the service sector. It is a no-nonsense read that provides a structured intro to TOC and makes the leap to service sector eloquently.

Don't be put off by intro, for those of us who have studied Dr. Goldratts work, it is an enlightening reminder of those core concepts and all of them are related to service rather than the manufacture of goods.

Each chapter pulls the reader through the concepts in theory and is backed with practical application. Sevice business managers and owners can unlock the power of TOC in a way never presented previously.

The chapters are completed with an overview of key-learnings for the reader to reflect upon. The comparison and ramafactions of services when available and services on demand is significant.

Delivery of services on demand is a sure fire way to grow your business and market. Utilizing the "bench" as professional sports teams do is key.

If you are learing TOC in a service business this is a must read!

Foundations for a Science of Service

Rickett's "Reaching the Goal" provides foundational insights for practitioners and researchers seeking a science of service (sometimes called the emergence of Service Science Management Engineering and Design). The author takes on the challenge of complex service businesses, including B2B (Business to Business) and PSTS (Professional Scientific and Technical Services). PSTS are the most highly customized of all services, which means that demand for these services is not easily predicted, and service delivery is not easily automated. The discussion of internal, external, and interface constraints is clear and concise. Theory of Constraints (TOC) gets its name from the fact that all enterprises are constrained by something. If they weren't, they could grow as large and as fast as they wanted. A common theme is therefore that local improvement rarely leads to global improvement, unless focused on the proper constraints at the proper time. The book guides the reader through a series of contrasting approaches: Critical Chain versus Critical Path, Throughput Accounting versus Cost Accounting, as well as others. I highly recommend this book to all faculty who are establishing service science courses or degree programs, as well as service researchers and practitioners in industry and government.

This is simply an outstanding book! Dr Ricketts brings unusual clarity of thought and writing style to this discussion of TOC concepts and the services business. I have read many TOC books. This is easily one of the top books in field.

Beginning with an excellent review of TOC concepts, Dr. Ricketts transports you to the services business. There, he surfaces the issues and challenges found in services environments and how TOC provides solutions. He displays a deep understanding of the many dimensions of services. One could buy this book for its educational value on services alone and not be disappointed. His presentation reflects both deep knowledge of services and clear understanding of how TOC can make it better.

Dr. Ricketts also provides excellent discussions of strategy development, change, and the elements of resistance to change. Then, there are other highlights too numerous to mention here. Rich in examples and illustrations, it was truly a pleasure to read this exceptional work!

A fine pick for both college-level business libraries and libraries catering to managers.

REACHING THE GOAL: HOW MANAGERS IMPROVE A SERVICES BUSINESS USING GOLDRATT'S THEORY OF CONSTRAINTS explains not only the basics of TOC, but how it improves business performance, using experiences from IBM research to document using TOC in services businesses. From its basic principles to applications in different areas of business, TOC is thoroughly covered including guidelines on how to implement in an existing organizational structure, making this a fine pick for both college-level business libraries and libraries catering to managers.

TOC has an outstanding record in manufacturing and here Rickett's has cleverly adopted the TOC applications and thinking to suit service industries. I know TOC well, I work in the services industry, and I've learned a lot from reading it. It is not (imho) an easy book for TOC newbies. I'd have liked a few more concrete examples - my mind works that way, and I hope John will add those in the 2nd edition. It's a very good book - I suspect in a year or so once the ideas have sunk in and I've tried them - that I'll be describing it as a classic.

The book starts with some background on Jose Silva, who taught himself and developed these techniques on his own. That's a pretty amazing feat. It then goes into the basics of his techniques.

His method for meditation and achieving the alpha state is better than any other method I have tried. Like anything else, it takes practice, but he does give helpful examples of how people use his method to improve health, diagnose medical problems, and develop ESP, just to name a few.

Like he states, you probably want to read the book all the way through first, then go back and re-read the key sections to learn the process. He even has a checklist which shows what pages describe the various techniques. Makes you want to take one of the Silva seminars.

Excellent book.

Brief Introduction to Bandura's Self-Efficacy
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 15 total.
Review Date: 2008-01-30
It's been over a decade since Albert Bandura's book "Self-Efficacy: The Exercise of Control" (hereafter SE) has been published. What's annoying is how little Bandura's Social Cognitive Theory seems to have permeated popular culture, despite the fact that there is an impressive amount of empirical evidence to support the explanatory linkages between "perceived self-efficacy" and human behavior, in particular, "performance attaintments".

(This review is not intended to be a comprehensive survey of SE. Instead, what I offer the reader is a brief but detailed explication of some of the major theoretical concepts of SE, emphasizing Bandura's explanatorily powerful notion of a self-efficacy BELIEF. Let me clarify what I mean by "explanatorily powerful". First, this concept has an impressive range of application to any domain of human life which can be thought of as an activity over which we exercise some (voluntary) control. In other words, self-efficacy beliefs can regarded as determinants, not of involuntary bodily movements, over which we (by def.) do not exercise any control, but over any domain which falls into the phenomena studied by philosophers of ACTION, namely, well, actions, doings, deeds. (Human actions can be understood as a sub-class of goal-oriented behavior--"sub-class" because not all goal-oriented behavior is subject to human choice or control, e.g., the biological processes of funtionally describable natural organisms are goal-directed).

For present purposes, it's enought to say that whereever, in whatever human contexts, or situations, or circumstances, it makes sense to think of there being an OPERATIVE CONTROL BELIEF, i.e., a belief that there ARE features of the context, situation, or circumstances, which are such that THEY ARE SUBJECT TO HUMAN CONTROL, there will ALSO be perceived (self) efficacy. Sports, health, interpersonal relationships, occupational activities, business relations, and scientific pursuits--all of these are domains in which people - you and I - have to perform, not as helpless spectatorial automatons, but as COGNITIVE AGENTS, capable of producing ACTIONS, i.e., of producing volunary behavioral performances in accord with standards which AFFECT the social (and natural) surround.

SE refers to the "self-efficacy" component of a larger theory which is called **Social Cognitive Theory**--"cognitive" because it holds that BELIEFS (i.e., cognitions) "mediate" (i.e., "determine," for simplicity's sake) affective (emotional) and somatic (i.e., physiological) states and behavior--"social" because psychological phenomena are determined by the structures (social and natural) which environ human beings. Bandura does not buy into the notion of a isolated, self-contained, private domain of "internal" phenomena which are causally out of reach from external, i.e., environmental influences. It follows from this, that to understand one's own psychological states, necessary reference to one's historical workplace, the current social structures in which one lives one's life must be taken into consideration.

In this context, it would be well to introduce probably THE most important general philosophical doctrine associated with SE. It is the doctrine which asserts a TRIAD OF RECIPROCAL CAUSALITY. People's internal reactions (personal cognitions, choices, emotions) produce behavior; since this behavior occurs IN THE ENVIRONMENT, it can alter it; So, personal (internal states) can determine behavior; behavior can determine the environment. But what about the people on the OTHER END of your behavior; the recipients, who have to adjust THEIR behavior because of those actions you introduce INTO THE ENVIRONMENT, and VICE VERSA. Other people's behavior (natural events notwithstanding) alter the environment, requiring YOU to adjust YOUR behavior; therefore, the environment determines (your) behavior; moreover, having to adjust YOUR behavior (e.g., having to exit a lane on the freeway because of incoming traffic), in relation to others can determine your personal reactions (e.g., you get angry or frustrated at certain cognitions because some motorist cut you off on the freeway.)

Performances of any kind in any given domain of human functioning, whether it be cognitive (e.g.., I Q test performance), social, occupational, recreational, or whatever are the result of two different classes of deterrminants - an abiility determinant, which most people recognize - and a "NON-ABILITY" determinant , which most people do not. According to Bandura, self-effficacy belief falls under the second class of derterminant of performance attainments. What is a self-efficacy belief? A self-efficacy belief is a belief concerning one's own capabilities, relative to a given domain of activity or human functioning. A self-efficacy belief can differ in a number of important respects, in strength and magnitude. The strength of one's self-efficacy is understood to be the degree to which one thinks that it is true; in other words, the strength of one's self-efficacy belief is the subjective certainty with which one holds that belief. (This is the phenomenon that people ordinarily call "confidence".)

The 'magnitude" of one's self-efficacy belief refers to what one thinks one is personally capable of accomplishing relative to a given domain of activity. Suppose I think I'm capable of playing chess pretty well. I do well at the public tables. But I don't think I can compete at the state, national, or international level. So, the magnitude of my performance which I can expect in the exercise of my personal "chess" capacities, in this case, is the level of performance in the game of chess. Assessments of magnitude depend on some ranking withing a continuum of performance attainments, against some implicit, or explicit standard of excellence. Self-efficacy beliefs reflects a self-assessment of (the state and current level) of my capabilities, which reflect social comparisons. However, in aspirational modelling, i.e., when you set out to be a dentist, or a ball player, or a pro analytic philosopher, or a Kant scholar, or , more exciting, an international gigilo, goal-setting is BY DEFINITION beyond the perimeters or horizons of de facto accomplishments. You don't aspire to be what you ALREADY ARE'; rather, you aspire to be that which you (currently) aren't. Therefore, the goal that you set for yourself is such that the evidcen you currently have on your capabilites to determine whether or not you can do this thang is going to FALL SHORT of confirming that you do. But if you only set goals to do what you've already done, you would never set an aspirational goal. So, since to set an aspirational goal means taht you set up a goal system (fior yourself) which is such that the goal is an accomplishment for which you have no DIRECT EVIDENCE that you can accomplish this goal, it's vitally important to your success, to voluntarily adopt a policy of "optimisitic" (as opposed to verdical, i.e, strictly accurate) self-appraisal. This confers all kinds of benefits, like warding of f disruptive affective and cognitive states, such as depression and anxiety (while you're on the aspirational course).. "In nonhazardous endeavors, veridical self-appraisal can be self-limiting." (Bandura, 1999).

This has been in the psychological literature for well over a decade, and is empirically well-documented. Some psychologists (e.g., Susan Harter), think that self-esteem derives from basically two sources, socially valued interpersonal relationships, and the developent of competencies invested with personal significance (sports, dating, cooking, academics or whatever). While (in Self-Efficacy), Bandura agrees that self-esteem may derive from either of these two founts, he (with an astuteness and compactness of expression I have come to expect of him) points out that self-esteem is NOT EQUIVALENT to self-efficacy: feelings of worthiness or unworthiness, how much you like yourself, are not the same thing as your belief that you are capable of performing well in a given domain. For example, say Bob is a great caricature artist, for example, but since he don't personally invest this domain of activity with much significance, that Bob is good at it doesn't really matter to him, in quite the same way that, say, being a good pro analytic philosopher DOES MATTER. THe point is that increases in perceived self-efficacy, relative to some domain of activity, do not necessary coincide with increased self-esteem.

To put illustrate the point more directly, take the film **A History of Violence**. The lead character, played by Viggo Mortensen, had a history of violence (as a former mobster). The mobster ("Joey") had high self-efficacy beliefs (both in intensity and magnitude) in the domain of "offing" people, i.e., murderous thuggery. But, as you find out, this is not a skill that increased Joey's self-esteem; on the conrary, "Joey" abandoned his thuggish life and its deleterious social associations in order to began a new (and secret) life elsewhere as a devoted (and non-violent, almost behaviorially meek) family man. (Sorry for the spoiler.) Point is, self-efficacy can be very high in a given domain, but it mayn't lead to high self-esteem; however, if self-esteem JUST IS self-efficacy, this would (by Leibniz's Law) be impossible. Since it's an empirical fact (thus, not impossible), self-esteem CANNOT BE the same THING as self-efficacy.

By distinguishing self-efficacy from self-esteem we can illumiante the latter by positing an explanatory linkage between the two: we could say that, the degree of self-esteem is determined by how well I perform at x-ifying, where x-ifying is a domain of activity I ACTUALLY CARE ABOUT (read: "identify with). Then, self-esteem isn't some epiphenomenal property that supervenes over your psyche, but rather something you can EXERCISE SOME CONTROL OVER. In increasing competencies in areas you care about, you can exercise control over your self-esteeem, i.e; your feelings of worthiness or unworthiness. And that is SWA-EEET. Finally, as a NON-ABILITY determinant of performance, optimistic self-appraisal can elevate your performance attainments, and therefore positiively affect your self-esteem levels.

So the question, then, is, do you have any control over whether or not you can adopt a policy of optimistic self-appraisal? Answer? Yes. You have "cognitive construal agency"--the ability to voluntarily adopt interpretations of life-events which are self-enhancing as opposed to ones which are self-belittling. Understandably, when one is operating under a negative construal bias, interpretations of one's circumstances which reflect an optimistic appraisal of one's capabilities (and thus of the outcome of one's efforts) may be not be so persuasive. This is where the "agency" in "cognitive construal agency" comes in. Bandura recognizes that people can exercise some control over their thought processes. They can exercise some control over their own internal "psychic environment." They can affirm positive construals of their capabilities which makes for a more optimal internal setting for their initial efforts at success.

This may require practice. Practice at cognitive construal agency involves generating self-referent thoughts (positive thoughts about yoruself) and keeping them ready-to-hand for immedate deployoment whenever you lapse into "negative rumination". The idea is not to waste time denouncing NSRTs, i.e., negative self-referent thoughts, but rather to REPLACE THESE with PSRTs, positive self-referent thoughts. Thought control efficacy can be expressed in either of two ways, by thought-suppression or by thought-replacement. Bandura acknowledges that in thought control, considered as thought-supppression, you run into a PARADOX of thought control: the very attempt to elimiate unwanted thoughts or cognitions from consciousness, is frustrated by the fact that, in order to NEGATE a NSRT (say, some propositions P = that you are fat, or not a good grad student, or whatever), you have to produce that very thought content in consciousness first, then denounce it. So, you can see how thought control, understood as thought suppression, is a cross-purposese with the aim of thought control (to eliminate unwanted thoughts or cognitions.)

By contrast, in thought control, understood as thought REPLACEMENT, you do not attempt to denounce every unwanted thought (i.e., cognition) that come your way. Instead, when NSRTs come your way, YOU CHANGE THE CHANNEL. That is, you DIVERT YOUR MIND FROM the NSRTs (in Kant's terminlogy you "abstract from" the NSRTs) and pay attention INSTEAD to other PSRTs (which, byt he way should not be contrued as some New Agey, pollyana life-is-a-bed-of-roses cognitions, but plausible optimistic cognitions). (Obviously, much more can be said about what THIS MEANS.) Suffice to say here, however, is that the "paradox of thought control" just described does not occur in thought control, considered as thought-replacement, because the procedure is not to target negative cognitions (in your attentional cross-hairs) for elimnation and denoucement. Rather, this happens indirectly by virtue of their being replaced by positive cognitions (by your having, so to speak, changed your mental channel). As I said, for those with dysfunctional self-evaluative systems, this will take practice, but the benefits are, well, nothing short of life-altering.

Albert Bandura explores the self-system throughout lifespan. Self-regulation and perceived self-efficacy help people to adjust to realities of each life's stage, from early childhood till aging and preparation to death.
Perceived self-efficacy refers to beliefs in one's capabilities to organize and execute the courses of action required to produce given attainments.
I have found this book very helpful and well structured. Bandura gives a broad hint to the reader, and offers answers to some of the most important and advanced issues that each of us encounters during life. The book stimulates a better awareness of humans' potentials, and encourages to rivisit our constructs.
Bandura's study on self-efficacy is supported by the citation of 47 pages of references. It is highly consistent and fascinating; and this book is an outstanding tool for improving our quality of life.

In this volume, Professor Bandura situates the self-efficacy construct within a theory of personal and collective agency that operates in concert with other sociocognitive factors in regulating human well-being and attainment. Bandura also addresses the major facets of agency - the nature and structure of self-efficacy beliefs, their origins and effects, the processes through which such self-beliefs operate, and the modes by which they can be created and strengthened. In addition, Bandura reviews a vast body of research on each of these aspects of agency in diverse applications of the theory. Must-reading for everyone interested in psychology and, specifically, self-efficacy beliefs.

The Brightest of His Generation
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2003-08-12
Ed Prichard was called "the brightest of our generation" by no less than Katherine Graham. He was Felix Frankfurer's first law clerk, and served ably and brilliantly in the Roosevelt and Truman administrations.

Then came 1948. In Texas, Lyndon Johnson won a Senatorial election, as the saying goes, by the votes of 49 dead Mexicans. That same year, Prichard helped stuff ballot boxes in his home county, Bourbon County, Kentucky, for a forgettable Senate candidate who had the election locked up anyway. But, hounded by J. Edgar Hoover for his "socialist" views (such as championing civil rights for blacks and an eight hour work day, with a decent minimum wage), Prichard, not Johnson, went to prison and was disbarred.

This short, but imminently well researched book is his story, recounting all his sparkling brilliance, the arrogance that helped bring him down, and his ultimate redemption as the father of the education reform movement in Kentucky. This is an elegantly written and masterfully documented history from a first rate young historian. The biggest revelation is the story of J. Edgar Hoover's targeting of Prichard, which was gleaned from declassified documents, and never previously reported.

If this book teaches us that we are all flawed, it also teaches that we are all capable of redemption. This is one of the finest biographies I have ever read.

A Greek Tragedy Played out in Postwar Kentucky

Edward F. Prichard, Jr.'s life makes for high drama; this excellent biography makes for engrossing and informative reading. "Prich" was yet another of the terribly bright Frankfurter students at Harvard Law School in the late 1930's who gravitated to Washington, first as a Supreme Court clerk to Frankfurter, and later with involvement in New Deal and wartime public service. The Greek chorus appears when Prichard returns to his home state of Kentucky to practice law. The book superbly recounts his conviction in connection with a 1948 vote-tampering scandal, his incarceration, and his eventual return to the practice of law and a role as respected educational reformer in Kentucky. Unfortunately, serious illness inflicted near blindness and other frailties which ultimately caused an early death at the age of 69. The reader can only sit back and wonder as to why one with such unlimited promise and talents chose the course he did. Nonetheless, as the book traces Prich's life, it provides an fascinating perspective on Harvard Law, Frankfurter, the wartime FDR administration, the early presidency of Truman, and the rise of the super lawyer-lobbyists such as Thomas Corcoran. One's time is well invested in reading this volume.

This book tells well of a brilliant student, high in the ranks of his class at harvard Law, law clerk to Justice Frankfurter, holding responsible positions in the Government in wartime Washington, who by an unbelievably reckless and stupid act destroyed his career, then , after years of struggle redeemed himself before his death in 1984. This is a most worthwhile read for anyone interested in the law or in Kentucky politics,or in the shakers and movers in Washington in the 1940s.

The Man Who Might Have Been Ed Prichard

Review Date: 2005-07-28
Who would of thought that here in the third millennium we would still take time to read about Ed Prichard, whose life story will be linked through eternity with a third rate felony-and a blundering, ham-handed felony at that? Prichard is dead more than 20 years now, as are almost all those who loved and hated him. He never held public office-indeed, more generally, never came close to fulfilling the promise of his admirers. Why would anyone care?

To this question, it is possible to give an uncharitable reply. Kentucky, one might say, is a place with more past than future. To dwell on a footnote may be read as saying: we almost amounted to something, we could have been a contender.

And yet, and yet. And yet we have the testimony of the best and the brightest that Prich himself was the best and the brightest; if not as an actor, perhaps as a thinker and certainly as a talker.. Indeed, I had the privilege to observe Prich in what might be called his rehabilitation phase: the early 60s when his friends were trying to ease him back from obloquy and exile onto the political stage. I will add my testimony to those of legions who swore that Prichard in full spate was simply the greatest three-ring oratorical circus of which a simple country boy might dream, his whooshes of insight keeping easy company with his flashes of savage wit. No wonder he won the affection of Felix Frankfurter, of Phil Graham, of-good heavens, is this true?-of Sir Isaiah Berlin.

Indeed: Berlin was once his roommate and like so many was stunned and horrified when Prich was convicted by a Kentucky jury The details are there Tracy Campbell's account, along with a great deal else one may have remembered or forgotten about the politics of Kentucky in the last Century. Campbell tells it all earnestly and unflinchingly, and a strangely compelling story it remains.

Is there a larger context for Prich's story? Probably not a great one, but by a stretch, you could fit it into more general story of the history of the New Deal. It was here, after all, that Prich occupied center stage: as the brilliant young scamp who enchanted Felix Frankfurter, and who put himself at the elbow of Robert Jackson, of Fred Vinson, of Jimmie Byrnes (although both Jackson and Byrnes stayed aloof, and even Vinson saw Prich's limits). One can, at least with caution, take Prich as a kind of symbol for what was right and wrong with those years: the brilliance, the optimism, the energy, together with an overlarge dose of self-admiration, bordering on downright narcissism. Prich was, after all, as dazzling as they say he was. But he was an appalling abuser of friendship, a serial shirker of duties, and at best no more than a mediocre husband and father. Even after he started taking fees from the strip miners, he never really paid his taxes. Indeed, one of the remarkable parts of the Prich story is the way so many people were taken in by him-not merely by his skills at rhetoric and dialectic (which were indisputable) but by the notion that these virtues somehow translated into political gravitas.

Campbell does a conscientious job of surveying the evidence surrounding Prichard's pivotal bout with ballot-stuffing in 1948. Laudably, he hesitates to draw any grand conclusions. I will indulge myself a bit more. Prich came back to Kentucky touted as the next governor, senator, president-offices to which (says Campbell), absent his "lapse" he "would certainly" have risen. But by Campell's own testimony, this is nonsense. Campbell himself says that Prich "had not the ambition or the personality for such posts." Quite right: probably nobody knew this better than Prich himself. His friends saw him as the next Roosevelt; he knew he was closer to Peter Pan. By sticking his hand in a ballot box, he relieved himself of all these impositions: he may have left his friends bewildered and disappointed, but he gave himself the freedom to remain forever young.

Excellent study of a failed genius

In this accessible, informative biography, Campbell presents the tragic story of one of the brightest stars on the 20th century American political scene. A man of acknowledged genius, fragile ego, and an almost childlike attitude, Prichard was seen by many as the most gifted and promising of the new generation of liberal politicians that arose out of the New Deal. Though his hopes for political office were ended by J. Edgar Hoover's irrational vendetta against him, Campbell makes it clear that the person who ultimately brought about Prichard's downfall was Prichard himself. This is an excellent book about the lofty heights and tragic depths that a man could sink to, and I highly recommend it to any history buff or political wonk.

Excellent little book. Some of the concepts that challenged me was the excerpt written by a communist supporter and his commitment to his cause and how the author compared that to our commitment to our Gospel cause. It really made me examine my passion for Christ. The second was the contrast between being a slave for Jesus vs. being a servant. Take your time and absorb it in.

DeMoss does an excellant job of using Gods Word to "...penetrate even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow...". I loved her specific examples of behavior and then scripture applications for it, such as:

"When your flesh wants to pass along a critical report about another believer, and the Spirit says, "Speak evil of no one" (Titus 3:2) bow your head and surrender to God."
or
"When your flesh wants to lashout in anger, and the Spirit says, "Clothe [yourself] with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with one another..." (Collosians #:12-13 NIV), bow your head and surrender to God."

Asking personal questions like: "Have you devoted to Christ "the whole of your life, " or are you merely giving Him your "spare evenings"?
Or Have "you chose friendship with God over all human relationships, earthy attachments, and visible security"?

She gives an excellant example of what surrender looks like by going through the song My Life by Frances Ridley Havergal, the one that starts with "take my life, and let it be consecrated, Lord, to thee..." This alone is worth reading the book for.

It's great convicting stuff even for wonderful mature-in-the-Lord Christians (which I am not compared to the friend who gave me this to read). It's a book I'll read again and save for my daughter.

This is an excellent book. I haven't read it all yet, but if you have asked Jesus to be your Savior, you should understand that He also needs to be your Lord - and that's Lord over everything! This book gives great insights to some of the things we hold back from God which really need to be relinquished. I highly recommend it.

Addresses very specifically the needs of tramatized and inocent victims who are searching for emotional, spiritual, and practical answers about where they have been. It will bring spiritual wholeness into view without preaching down, judgement, or self-rightous indignation. May many who have been hurt seek out these books.

I love it when God sends the right book at the right time, and that is exactly what happened with "Surrender". I think there are times in my life that I understood what surrendering to Christ meant, and I think I have given Him all. While reading "Surrender", I realized that surrendering is a journey. There are always deeper levels of selfishness to overcome. Surrender doesn't necessarily mean giving something up outwardly first, but it it starts with the bowing of the knee so to speak in our heart to Christ. I also realized that the more I try to hold onto and control even the smallest of things, that I ultimately come under bondage to it, and it becomes one more burden to carry. Christ wants to carry our burdens, and live in a life of peace. Surrender is the only answer.

I will definitely recommend this book to my friends, and keep a copy for myself to look at in the future. It is truly a valuable book. I would also highly recommend "Surrender" for a small group, or a book club. DeMoss has a discussion guide at the back of the book for each chapter. It is a fairly easy read, that could be covered in eight weeks.

A friend bought this book, and couldn't stop talking to me about how positive it made them feel. Having bought my own copy I definitely agree that it will lift your mood, and help you make powerful life-choices.
The book has a message of Carpe Diem, Latin for 'seize the day.' It reminds you that life is short and that you must not allow yourself to drift from one decision to another. To enjoy your life YOU have to take control. You do this by deciding what you want. You then have to ask the Cosmos for what you want. In time the Cosmos will answer your request and deliver - within reason! The beauty of the words illustrate that you are not at the mercy of universe, but that you have control and power in the universe! The power is utilized by making changes to your own life.

Besides the spiritual life-coaching, some chapters also have some wonderful modern fairy-tales to illustrate the issues within. They are enjoyable to read and bursting with deeper meaning.

I've seen that 'Arizona Reader' has criticized the spelling and grammar but without reason. The grammar, the spelling, the sentences are all just fine, which is to be expected considering the author has a degree in English Literature! Either 'Arizona Reader' has been reading something completely different or he is a spiteful author of a competing book!
As the author says 'the Cosmos will deliver balance.'
This is a warmly written book with helpful guidance that will show you how to pursue your ambitions. I urge you to embrace the positive message, if you do, like me, each day you will be smiling a whole lot more!

Brilliiant. This book shows you how to regain control of your life.

This book shows you how to talk to the 'Cosmos' to make your sincerest wishes come true. What the 'Cosmos' is, is open to personal interpretation. An unnamed higher power? God? The name isnt relevant, what is relevant is that the Cosmos is concerned about your welfare, and that of every living creature on the planet and in the universe.

Its a heartwarming book because it shows you how a positive outlook will help you navigate through the challenges of life, and it is comforting because by the time you finish reading you will know that we are not alone on planet Earth. Most importantly, by the time you read the last words you will feel re-energized and determined to pursue your dreams.

I had been wondering why the world is going crazy for this book, but having read it I can say this book is an elegantly written handbook for self-empowerment and I recommend it to everyone.

The material in the book is excellent. However, I am finding it VERY hard to read. The book is full of incomplete sentences, sentences lacking punctuation and just plain bad grammar.

I believe the author has an excellent message to share. I just think a proofreader would have been of GREAT benefit.

Wheather you are recently diagnosed or someone that has been living with this disease, it is an excellent guide book to gaining better control of your diabetes (Type 1 or 2). I have Diabetes type II and was lucky enough to get this book, I followed the instructions to the letter, step by step and from the very first week I could tell that it was working.
I felt better physically and mentally, more alert. Slept better, my glucose level was getting better.
When I started the prgram I was taking Glucophage and Avandia, by the 18th day I no longer needed Avandia, my daily blood glucose average was 121 the highest with the 94 the lowest ( when watching my carb intake).

I got to the point that I cut the half the daily dose of Glucophage.
Commitment is the key, reading the book is not enough, you have to decide to DO as the book says.!! Getting into this program is one of the bets things that ever happened to me.

Lance Porter has put together one of the most useful "self help"

books to come down the pike in a long time. With this book

whether you are a diabetic or someone who knows a diabetic you

will find answers to a lot of questions about the disease and

plenty of ways to help gain control of it! One of the things

Lance does in this book is to remind the reader that maintaining

a postive outlook on things will go a long way to help you

get your life together after the diagnosis of diabetes has

knocked it apart. This book can also be of much help to those

who might be at risk of developing the disease too. Who knows

if you read this book and follow its precepts you might ever be

able to keep yourself from getting diabetes. This book is also

a great way for the people in your life who are trying to

understand what you are living with and going through each day

with diabetes to learn how to help you with it. This book is

a must for all diabetics and those who care about them. I know

because I am on of the many Type 2 Diabetics out there, and this

book has been a " Godsend" to me and mine. Bravo Lance Porter!!!!

This is a great source of information and very clear definitions of many of the key issues relating to Airport Management and Operations. Although written primarily from the European and Asia Pacific Airport and Airline perspectives, the author has worked very hard to include North American issues and examples. As The Airport Industry moves continually towards privatization, these differences will move to the background and be less obvious; and less important. This is a great starting place for the researcher or the occasional affectionato

This book provides a thorough analysis in all facets of airport operations and provides the reader with a logistical insight that is unmatched. While the book provides a great overview, it lacks information particularly on air cargo development and facility planning at airports. While the growth in air cargo traffic significantly outpaces passenger growth, air cargo development issues at airports become more significant. Air cargo development issues must be addressed by airport authorities. This book only makes scant reference to this. However, "Airport Operations" is a valuable book to all airport authorities, consultants and transport researchers. No doubt, a very timely piece of information.

I have had a copy for many years and have given copies to a grandchild and one child, since anxiety can be inherited (my father had it, and we also have hypoglycemia). I have also given the order forms in the back to friends. I first became aware of panic attacks as an eight year old, but I wasn't diagnosed until I was in my forties, and only after many counseling sessions for panic which didn't help. I found this book and it meant the end of Xanax for me. One doesn't have to read it all at once. The first things to learn are distraction and breathing exercises. Then move on to magnification and other thought control processes.

I first read this book in New Zealand.. and soon became hooked. Mainly as I suffer from anxiety and depression. I found it insiteful and cathartic. It helped me to understand more fully my idiosyncracies and attitudes, and gave me more peace of mind. It offers good advice on how to help combat these debilitating conditions and gain your life back. I would highly recommend it to anyone who suffers from these conditions, or lives with anyone who has them, to better understand what feelings are involved, and that no one ever chooses to suffer; for many reasons, it is simply how our brain reacts to difficult situations, and no one is to blame. An empathetic, yet highly practical book.

This is a newer edition; for more rave reviews from people who have been through the whole program, check out the older edition:

(The link will be slow because it has to rebuild "your" view, but just give it time).

If you really want to get better, if you're ready to do whatever it takes (because it does take hard work!), then this book can really help you take those steps. It's one of the few that are genuinely about "self-help" - how to gain internal strength and heal yourself. Good luck!
