Do "prestigious" newspapers publish inaccurate information? Do reporters attend press conferences only to take quotes our of context? How bad is the bias in the "mainstream" media? These are some of the questions you'll find discussed in this book by the wife of former Interior Department Secretary James Watt. She begins by talking about the controversial "Beach Boys ban" during the Independence Day concert on the Washington Mall. What you would have never known through the media is that Watt never mentioned the Beach Boys. The incident was a media creation.

She talks about becoming an intercessory prayer warrior for her husband. She gives numerous examples of where he tried to get the facts out to the public, but the media refused to report objectively. The book ends with a spiritual principle, that God works mysteriously and His plan is always best. Christians win!

This may look like overkill but it works. It gets the job done. It is esthetically pleasing too. If you have a lot of loose CDs scattered all over your apartment this can consolidate your problem. Now you can have some people over.

The ten sins of Winstom Churchill

The ten sins of Winston Churchill

1) Refused political overtures with Adolph Hitler. He opposed Munich agreement signed between Hitler and Chamberlain - Peace in our time. The drama of WWII could have been avoided and Europe would have remained for the Europeans, and not `inherited' by millions of immigrants mainly from the third (or the fourth) world.
2) Caused Coventry to suffer severe damage during WWII from tough German air raids, destroying historical places (the Cathedral) and killing one thousand citizens. He could have avoided this drama if he had given orders to the British air force to intercept the Germans, but he didn't because he was afraid the Germans might know the British had already invented an early warning system called the `Radar'.
3) He waited in the WWI until French territories were `invaded' before intervening while England's interest required her to support France rather than wait. The disputes between Russia, Austria and Germany were multiplied when they `felt' England was `not interested'.
4) Churchill made the same mistake in WWII and waited until France capitulated in June 1940. His main concern was to `devour' the French Fleet under the pretext France might not be able to fight from her overseas colonies.
5) Following the Boer war (1905), Churchill, in split personality, caused the division of the Cabinet between Liberal Imperialists (Asquith, Grey, and WC) and Little Englanders represented by all the rest. He regarded France `the decadent and frivolous grasshopper', whereas most of the cabinet correctly foresaw the best interest of England was to keep France as an ally - to protect the French coasts, hence the British. It was important for Britain to enter any war with a united government.
6) Had it not been through the interference of Lord Kitcheners, Churchill could have alienated the whole Muslim World by taking the offensive against Turkey. He mobilized the fleet to obstruct the delivery of two German Gun Boats to the Turks in WWI - and to sink them if necessary. (Russia was alarmed by the arrival of such battleships at the back doors of the Black Sea). WC sought by his action to neutralize the vacillating Turkey; another miscalculation.
7) His miscalculation came in 1915-16. WC was responsible for the fiasco of Gallipolis landing on the Dardanelle - a combined Anglo/French military operation mounted to occupy the Ottoman Capital - Constantinopole -Istanbul that failed with severe allied losses.
8) As Chancellor of the Exchequer he is responsible for the unfortunate economical collapse of GB in the early twenties by the return to Gold Standards resulting in `deflation' and causing massive unemployment, miners and general strikes - leading to world depression. (Given the fact that Britain was then an endless Empire)
9) He advocated the use of force to break worker's strikes (miners and other) [[WC expressed admiration of Benito Mussolini methods calling him `the Roman Genius, the greatest lawgiver among men'. WC never had the charismatic aptitudes of the Italian Leader to arouse popular loyalty or enthusiasm, anyway]]. Why did he change attitudes during WWII remains an enigma buried with him forever?
10) His egoism led him to support King Edward VIII during the abdication crises in the hope that he might be appointed Prime Minister if the King did not abdicate. The lover abdicated, and the WC fell to disfavour for, alas, only a short time, until May 1940 to bring the world back to score (1) above.

Checks and Balances has served me well as a reading for my Introduction to American Government course at Augustana College. I find standard American Government textbooks to be dreadful and don't use one. I use this book as the primary reading for the institutions phase of the course (it does not cover courts, however).

The book is accessible and informative for the general reader.

Picked this book up in Canada during a recent visit and LOVED it. It is a frank discussion of the reluctance of one woman into the journey of motherhood and how she embraces it all with love, guilt and frustration. Bravo to Stephanie Calman for showing us all how we are all imperfect in this hyper-perfectionistic world. The pressures of motherhood are a challenge enough without women judging each other constantly. Her inner dialogue matched mine so I found it filled with humor, unmatched realism and humility. A must-read for all Mommies! We're all doing the best that we can!

A singularly fascinating biography of a shrewd, powerful, charismatic politician

Review Date: 2007-03-06
Written by prize-winning historian and former Maine politician Neil Rolde, Continental Liar From the State of Maine: James G. Blaine is the true story of the American presidential campaign of 1884, the so-called "dirtiest campaign in American history", when Republican James G. Blaine came within 1,047 votes of becoming president. Yet his career, as spectacular as any of the "Gilded Age", did not end there; he served twice as U.S. secretary of state, became a Speaker of the House of Congress, and a U.S. senator for his adopted state of Maine. Credited with initiating America's progression down the path to acting like a world power, Blaine's unofficial nicknames ranged from "The Plumed Knight" to "Slippery Jim" to "The Continental Liar from the State of Maine." A singularly fascinating biography of a shrewd, powerful, charismatic politician who dominated the American stage from just before the Civil War to nearly the turn of the century, Continental Liar From the State of Maine is a fascinating read from cover to cover, offering insights into political leadership, scandal, and backdoor dealing that are as applicable today as they were over a hundred years ago.
