Wow! This is a great book. The story of how one man, Ron Brown, emerges as the hidden hand behind the Democrat's re-taking of Washington is a gripping tale of power, politics and personality. Born into a middle-class black family, Ron Brown's life takes him from the halls of Harlem's fabled Hotel Theresa, where he grew up, to all-white Middlebury College, to the civil rights movement and, finally, to a position where he helps resurrect the fortunes of the Democratic Party. Ron Brown is presented in all his complexities - his life, his loves, and his ability to bridge racial divides with a silken, yet steely, determination. It's a tale well-told, smoothly-written, and filled with solid investigative reporting. This is a book to buy - and keep.

I loved An Uncommon Man. Adroitly written, Steve Holmes tells a story about one of the towering African-American figures of the late twentieth century. Through this biography, one remembers that the civil rights movement still has a way to go - and that some of the struggles are not that old. Moreover, one learns about - and appreciates - the human side of a gifted person who, through his great talent and hard work, rose to the apex of the American political system and had an impact on politics that continues today. Brown refused to let the color of his skin stop his progress albeit acknowledging the reality that race played. Significant detail about the history and background of Brown and his family and colleagues make this a particular joy to read. Anyone who enjoys contemporary political biographies will love this tour-de-force.

In this unauthorized biography, Steven Holmes has done a meticulous job of reporting -- conducting countless interviews and citing numerous original source materials. This highly readable work conveys the essence of a man who rose to the highest ranks of American government and whose influence on the global economy is felt even today. Holmes delves into every aspect of Ron Brown's life -- from his childhood at the Hotel Theresa in Harlem, through his college and military days, his stint at the Urban League, and his meteoric ascension through Democratic party politics into the Clinton cabinet. Readers of "An Uncommon Life" get a thorough sense of Brown's charm, his analytical mind, his tenacious drive to succeed, his weakness for beautiful women. Holmes offers an unsparing but ultimately fair view of the nation's first black Commerce Secretary, whose all-too-human flaws can never overshadow his accomplishments.

This is a great book especially if you're interested in what makes Washington tick. It is a true, honest, tough but fair portrait of a man who lived and breathed politics. He succeeded tremendously in his efforts on behalf of the Democratic party and his community of people, African Americans. Unfortunately, he made a few mistakes along the way but he should not be chastised. Are we not all human and do we not all show our frailty in different forms? The biography moves quickly as it evolves from childhood thru youth to mature adult and captures the essence of Brown's experiences to show us how he became the man we remember today.

The definitive and first book about Ron Brown (my personal hero) was written last year by his daughter (The Life & Times of Ron Brown) and is available on amazon too. Since the Holmes book was second, and comes four years after Brown's tragic death, I assumed that it would contain new and believable information. Unfortunately, it is obvious that holmes never met Brown and clearly didn't interview anyone close to him, only folks with an ax to grind. As a result, the story of an inspirational leader has been reduced to rumor and innuendo. it makes Brown's life seem blah and he was anything but!

This book was not at all what I was looking for. There were too many opions on cabinet building in one book none of which were in any detail. Too general and the various contributors at times condemed the styles of one another. Seemed as though they put together monthly issues of various woodworking magazines. Not what I exspected

"Step by step" is really a misnomer. Only 14 pages of this very slim book are devoted to projects, and none of the projects contain materials lists, detailed plans or construction diagrams. And unfortunately, all the projects look very dated.
You also will not find any photos or color in this book. Nor more than a few paragraphs about shelving - the main reason I bought the book.
What it does give is a very basic overview of cabinet making, plus an overview of using powertools like orbitals saws and routers.
If you are looking for plans, information on shelving, inspiration or step-by-step instructions, then look elsewhere. But if you are looking for an overview of cabinet making, then this is the book for you.

I was disappointed to find that this book was nothing but higher order mathematics with "equivalent" models. I had hoped to find useful, easy to understand text with some illustrations about driver considerations, cone and baffle design, crossover design and modeling- everything for an experienced hobbist to quickly get up to speed about speaker design. This book is aimed for those interested in mathematical theory and equivalent modeling of speakers- more for an audio graduate student.

Benson's book provides a rich background in the fundamental physics of loudspeaker design. However, this book is NOT for the hobbiest! To truly appreciate his writing, the reader should, by necessity, have a solid background in physics, mathematics, or engineering. Unlike the other oversimplified "how-to" cookbook speaker design books, this tome presents the operational theory such that a skilled designer can create a "from scratch design", instead of merely cutting and pasting an existing design. Other books should be subtitled "Loudspeaker Building", this books can truly be labeled as loudspeaker design!
A mathematical text, not for home loudspeaker builders.

Review Date: 1999-10-03
This book is an edited collection of technical papers of various aspects of cabinet design, which does not attempt to speak to the novice enclosure builder. This is not a "how to" book, but rather a step by step documentation of the math behind cabinet design. Most of the book is algebraic expressions relating design parameters. The reader is expected to already understand mathematical fundamentals of several common speaker designs, and he who does not would be better off starting with a more fundamental approach. A "rating" of this book is innapropriate, because it is a technical report. The 5 star rating is because reviews are not accepted without ratings, and far be it from me to find any fault with these 200+ pages of math.

After reading this book, I was disappointed in the respect that half of the content was a shop tool handbook more so than a boat joinery manual. Yes, the ideas and suggestions were valuble, but you should already know this going into boat construction.
A few of his suggestions pertaining to using an inverted circular saw as a "make-do" table saw is down-right dangerous at best. (page 38)
His chapter on "Woodworking Projects for the Home" was a nice addition, but I'm trying to figure out what it's doing in a boat joinery book?
In the end, I'm glad I purchased the book as I gleaned a few ideas from it.

Most cruisers are not shipwrights and never will be, but that doesn't mean you can't learn to do some easy woodworking tasks. And even if you can't master the basic rudiments of joinery, because, like me, you have clumsy hands and the artistic ability of a one-eyed fruit fly, you can at least get an idea about how to use the basic hand and electric tools used in cabinetmaking. True, you most likely won't be building a boat, but Mr. Bingham has simple projects in his book that even a simpleton like me can manage, plus if you have a lot of wood on your boat, or you are one of those who is forever changing and improving your floating home, than this is a handy book to have on board.

This book is one of the few on the market that gives a comprehensive breakdown of the different qualities of wood and plywood available.
The clear figures and inventory of techniques that included definitions of highly specialized terms enabled me, a novice, to communicate with experienced woodworkers. Now I'm confident arriving at the lumber yard, because I have already considered exactly the right product I need for the project at hand.

There's enough information to guide the motivated handy-person through built-in furniture making or room reconstruction. The book is not for the meek, but those equipped with decent tools and patience.

The other reviewer found this book outdated, and perhaps it is not for an intermediate or advanced woodworker. But I found it very helpful in explaining the basics for a novice. The introductory chapters on grades of wood, reading plans, etc. give a lot more background information than most other beginning woodworking books I've looked at. The book also discusses the differences between working with wood, plywood, and particle board. I like the fact that it tells how to do things using hand tools (for those of us who can't afford to spend thousands of dollars for a shop full of power tools in order to begin our first project). The book also explains how to make joints using several different kinds of tools. The book is easy to read, but could have more figures/pictures for some techniques. I would recommend it for anyone who is just starting out in woodworking.

If you are new to cabinet making, this is the one book you should have to learn how to make frameless cabinets.
Levine has a system which may not be for everyone, but it is easy to understand, and he explains things with a clarity that is hard to find in the woodworking world. Here is what I like:
1) He explains basic dimensions and layouts for kitchen cabinets. There are no plans, but there are lots of photos and illustrations.
2) His coverage of European hinges (Grass) and Accuride drawer slides will be invaluable if are just learning how to install this hardware.
3) Ditto for plastic laminate.
4) In the field of woodworking, I think Levine is just about unparalleled at taking complex information and explaining it with great clarity.

The book by Sanford Holst is written with simplicity to denote people's every day association with moringa. The experiences of people and empirical research makes the book appitizing to read and skim through. A host of references used in this book shows that Holst is not a dreamer and he is not alone in trying to inspire people to take a look at nature's medicine cabinet. This is trully a valuable asset to both the skeptics and moringa advocates like me who believe that popularizing moringa will be mankind's greatest achievement in a world where poverty and diseases are universal challenges.

Overall, I thought the book was informative but more could have been written on the benefits of the moringa tree, and less on recipes.
Most of what I read on the nutritional benefits of Moringa and the rejuvinating effects the various parts of the tree have on people were already well known to me because of the many websites I have visited.
I find it interesting that the seed pods are being used to purify water in third world countries and that many citizens of these same countries are being well nourished by the Moringa tree, which is easily accessable.
I had hoped that more information on the curative effects and scientific studies of the plant would be included in the book.
Most likely at least a few more books about this amazing plant will be published in the future, because of the heightened awareness of the tree. Direct-sales distributors are already joining forces with a company called Zija (http://www.4zijahealth.com)to launch a new commercial venture touting the amazing benefits of moringa.

This edition is very severly abridged, to the extent that it is meaningless. Before I began reading the Diary, I read Claire Tomalin's "Samuel Pepys, The Unequalled Self" which is excellent! She quoted extensively from the Diary as well as providing the historical and personal background that is crucial to understanding what and whom Pepys was writing about. There are entries that she quotes extensively, for example Monck's move against the Rump Parliment on February 11, 1660, which contains more information than the "selected passage" in the Diary. Aside from a very few meaningful passages, this edition is filled with short snippets of trivial activities of the day. It contains no heart, no soul which is what made the Diary famous in the first place. Instead of this book, I recommend Ms. Tomlin's book which is available at this very same botique.

Dover's republication of PASSAGES FROM THE DIARY OF SAMUEL PEPYS returns a 1921 classic to print, providing select passages from Pepys' more extensive DIARY recounting the Great Fire of London and the Plague years. A vivid description of life in bygone England evolves, recommended for college-level courses in period English history.
