Vesely's sweeping novel is epic stuff. As much flavor as one can get without time travel! Part of a cycle of books, this is a great point of entry for any Lonesome Dove fan whose taste for something big has been left unfulfilled for too long.

Seasons of Harvest as a thoroughly enjoyable novel!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Seasons of Harvest. The characters, from primitive man onward, captured my interest and concern. I found the story of generation after generation of primitive Indians to be interesting from a cultural and historical point of view, as well as an engaging character study. I could not wait to read the remaining 2 books in the sequel when I finished "Seasons".

Thank you for a book I'll cherish

I often sit on my portal looking at the mountains, and I think of the generations of people who have passed through this river valley, and of the people who built this village. Now I feel that I know them - whereas before I only felt them. Thank you for a book I'll cherish.

Paul Nicklen was raised in the Arctic. (on Baffin Island) perhaps that is why he understands the special beauty of the Arctic and was able to capture it in his photographs.

This is an incredible collection of photos. I relived my Arctic experiences and could feel the cold and hear the quiet. This collection will remain with me forever and my compliments go out to the artist. I look forward to another publication in the near future.

Received the book as a gift and thought that the photos were absolutely incredible. These pictures have made me want me to visit the Arctic. I think this is one of the finest publications for coffee table books and have put it on my Christmas list.

Matobi!

Matobi! It's the story of friendship, secret clubs, codes and exploration, all set along a beach and on an island.

I picked up this book last year at the friends of the library shelf maintained by the Dublin library in Starbuck's on Regional Road. I chose it because I like Arnold Lobel's illustrations and as it's an "I Can Read" book it's perfect for Sean who is now learning how to read. At the moment it's one of a select number of books in rotation for me to read to Sean while he's taking his evening bath.

The Secret Three is one of the many books that Arnold Lobel illustrated for other authors. In this story by Mildred Myrick, two boys spending the summer at the beach find a third friend by way of a message sent in a bottle. The story has a nice introduction to how tides work and some basic cryptology as the boys send encrypted messages to each other.

It's realy too bad that Ms. Myrick didn't write any more books. This little jewel is perfect for little boys. My son, age 4, loved it. Three little boys form a club while at the seashore by using the changing tide to send messages in a bottle.

My mother originally read this book to me back in the 1960s. I always loved it and saved it with all my other books. Now as a mom I am again enjoying reading it - this time to my son who is in Kindergarten. He loves this story and we read it again and again.

The best book ever which brings back wonderful memories of one of my three brothers reading this to me when I was about 5 years old. We used to sit on top of a big chest of drawers behind a curtain and read about three boys who sent messages in a bottle and formed the most exciting club. Matobi. The whole experience was magical and brought the book alive and absolutely real. My four children think this is a book that is amazing and rate this as one of their favourite books. They conjure up all sorts of adventures for the holidays just as I did as a kid. It's brilliant to fire the imagination and get children using make-believe and inventing things from natural materials. A must for a seaside holiday or somewhere near the coast. Enjoy! Relive the magic of your naive and beautiful childhood.

I have read this book when I was about six years old, now I am fourteen, and I can say that this a great book. I enjoyed it then, and even though it is easy to read now, I still enjoy it just as much. And for such, a price, what do you have to lose?

I'm happy to say that I now am able to read the same copy of this book to my own children that I myself once read as a child. Most appropriate for kids aged about 5 to 10 I'd say, though it can certainly appeal to kids outside that group as well. Three friends send bottles by sea with coded messages to each other and form a secret club. A good book for people who want their kids to develop an interest for imaginitive play and adventure, or as a precursor to books like the Hardy Boys series. Fun illustrations and large, easy-to-read print. Matobi!

THis book encourages the reader with tips from people who have successfully lost weight by making permanent changes to their diet, caloric intake and who are thrilled with the results they have had. I can assure the readers who don't like to exercise that they would be surprised by what they are accomplishing by the end of the eight week program. You are gently, subtly coaxed into increasing your energy level. Sally also carefully selected the recipes which are easy to prepare but delicious beyond what you thought healthy eating should be.

Hey, I just picked up this book after following Sally's columns in The Washington Post for the last few years and just want to say to others that Sally really gets it -- the ups and downs of weight loss, the challenge to get rid of my "spare tire" and eat well. It's refreshing to have someone so knowledgable and supportive.

I discovered the Lean Plate club column (every Tuesday in the Washington Post) & the Lean Plate web chat (12-2pm Tuesdays) a year ago. I look forward to Tuesdays, knowing Help & support as well as fresh ideas are on the way via the column & web chat. This is what I find in Sally Squire's book: good common sense advice, inspiration & help . There are short tests you take that help you see where you are- motivation-wise & where you are in your (in my case) lifelong struggle with weight issues. There is solid nutritional information. There are recipes for food & exercise. This book is packed with facts and do-able suggestions for how to approach and maintain your own weight loss plan. Sally Squires approaches the facts in a fun, no-nonsense- positive way. I highly recommend this book. I keep it with me all the time. I lost a lot of weight (100 pounds) & reached my goal over a year ago, but the struggle now to maintain new habits & keep the weight off is very challenging & difficult. This book gives me inspiration & hope.

Every year I purchase this 12-month calendar, and every year I have not been disappointed. The wall calendar is spiral bound and comes in a sturdy box--all but eliminating the chance for damage during shipping. The calendar's nature photos, taken in various U.S. parks, are large and very crisp, and its colors are vivid. You will not be disappointed.

A Wonderful Find!

Review Date: 2006-10-22
My family just discovered this out of print book, and what a delight it is. My son (5 1/2), who loves all things knightly enjoys the story, and I enjoy the easy meter of the rhyme:

In days of old,
And times gone by,
When Knights were bold
And castles high,

There lived in the town
Of East North Devon
A little boy
Whose name was Kevin-
A smallish lad,
Not quite eleven

The story goes on to describe how Kevin, although an unlikely knight, bravely faces the "dragon" terrorizing the countryside. It is very gently and sweetly told.

The illustrations are interesting, as well. They remind me a little of the angular style seen in Disney's Sleeping Beauty, but are less colorful.
The palatte is made up of Orange-Red, Grey, and Black.

If you are able to find a copy of this book (we found ours at a library sale), I highly recommend it!

This was originally my sister's book, but when I was born (she was 18), I quickly took it away from her. Now my daughter (19 mon) brings it to me almost every day to read (over and over!). The rhyme is wonderful and is fun to both read and hear. I can even remember making a felt storyboard for it in elementary school and taking it to show and tell. The story is very inspiring and encouraging. It is the best children's book I have ever read.

Sir Kevin of Devon is one of those books that your children will love for the rest of their lives. Hey, you will love it, too. It is a truly inspiring story of a little boy who aspires to be a knight. He may not be tall or strong or ride a noble steed, but he has a heart that is full of courage and bravery. The poetry in this book of Adelaide Holl is very moving and reads aloud beautifully. There is a good deal of humor and silliness to balance with the more serious business of fighting a dragon. Your children will want to hear it again and again. Try not to choke up on that last page as you and your children feel yourselves swell with pride over Kevin's accomplishment of proving himself worthy of being a knight.

A seminal contribution to 20th Century Art reference collections
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-05-05
Bolshevik political ideology held contemporary European art movements such as Cubism and Abstract Modernism in contempt. The Soviet Union authorized, supported and fostered a naturalist oriented art movement from the 1930s through the 1980s. Thanks to the Cold War politics of the Kremlin, Russian artists created a realist school of painting, while the Communist government did what it could to suppress Soviet Impressionist paintings -- many of whose art works still managed to be smuggled out into western markets and find their way into European and American museums. With the collapse of the Soviet Union, scholars and art critics were finally able to appreciate Soviet impressionist art and arts. Now a compilation of the best of that art is showcased, along with an informed and informative commentary, in the 463-pages that comprise "Soviet Impressionist Painting" by Vern G. Swanson and published by the Antique Collectors' Club. Profusely illustrated with superb reproductions throughout, "Soviet Impressionist Painting" is enhanced with the inclusion a Chronology of Soviet Art; a glossary, extensive endnotes, a bibliography, a listing of the illustrations, and a comprehensive index. A seminal contribution to 20th Century Art reference collections and supplemental reading lists, "Soviet Impressionist Painting" is highly recommended for personal, academic, and community library collections.

Truly sumptuous

Review Date: 2008-01-04
Covering Soviet realist art from the 1930s to the 1980s, this impressive volume Soviet Impressionist Painting is a revelation. The well written and accessible text is both interesting and informative, explaining the prevailing conditions which influenced the artists and their work. The reproductions of the paintings are interspersed with the text, and vary from smaller than postcard size to the double page spread, one quibble here is that the text and the image to which it refers rarely appear on the same page, but usually two or three pages apart; with illustrations on every page this seems an odd arrangement. It concludes with a twenty five page chronology of Soviet art.

Perhaps because of their initial impact, the first impression is that the majority of pictures here depict happy workers off to the field, smiling families and cheerful youths. However this is not strictly the case, there are more pensive portraits and groups, and there is a fair sprinkling of landscapes along with a few still life and some nudes.

What really stands out, regardless of subject matter, is the quality of the painting; vibrant and energetic, with lively brush work and a strong sense of light these pictures cannot fail to appeal. Here the quality of the photography and printing come to the fore, one can sense the texture of paint and the brush work, adding greatly to the vitality of the work. The colour reproduction is superb, rich and at times vivid or even luminous; the paintings truly come to life on the page.

This is genuinely a sumptuous volume, lavishly illustrated almost entirely in colour. Grab a copy while you can before this one goes out of print.

Its back and better than ever.

I thought I would never own this book as the out of print version was running from $300 up to $800!!!!?!?. That was for a book only a few years old. This one will be the same. This publisher tends toward the lower print runs so I suspect this item will be history (so to speak). As an artist my point of view is all about the images. I read the books that are honest assesments of the work and not deconstructionis bs (read Michael Fried). This book offers a fair assesment of the work being shown with no illusions regarding the setting within which the art work was created. In the introduction we read, "...they (critical western writers) imagined that in a controlled society all art was necessarily bad, because artists can only create in absolute freedom. Yet few in the West could name a single Soviet artist or visualize any of their paintings. What we had were blanket dismissals from the ill-informed." This book is about dispelling those blanket dismissals. Apart from all that, when the artwork is taken at face value, the work presented is a mindblowing celebration of talent. With awe I read artists name after name without any recongnition and realized the treasure this book begins to expose. The images are beautiful. The editors were not afraid to run an image over the gutter to show its best impact within the confines of the book. This is a book that will be read and studied for years. If you are a fan of Sorov, Sorolla, Fechen, etc....this is the mother load. The cover art is a good representation of the quality and kind of work you will find inside.
