This is the best modern English version of the Indian epic. The legend comes alive in fine contemporary style, never compromising the spiritual essence of the original. A must for lovers of classics, fantasy, the Indian literary tradition and plain great writing. The Ramayana retold, in full, for the international reader by a gifted Indian author. Reads like the magnificent story it is: a book for everyone.

Oprah has long been maligned in literary circles as a lightweight talkshow host who dishes up weepy, sentimental, "women's" novels. Farr does a great job of poking holes in this stereotype of Oprah. She shows Oprah's thoughtfulness and intelligence, and the service that she has done in getting Americans interested in reading. She explains how a voice like Oprah's is needed in the literary world, which tends to be dominated by men. She outlines the historical context in which Oprah's bookclub operated -- how it was a continuation of the "mass book club" tradition from the turn-of-the-century. This book is a quick read, but there is much in it that can be referred back to later. I recommend this book for anyone who is in a book club, has worked at a library or bookstore, is an English major in college, or who simply loves to read!

Outstanding, quick read, includes THE list of all Oprah recommendations.

However, $55 for the hardback -- am I missing something here? The paperback is $18 -- and the book is very, very thin. I don't get the $55 hardback price.

Highly recommended...

I stumbled upon this book at my library and am really glad that I took the time to read it. This book is a short, quick, interesting read that examines the effects of Oprah's Book Club on a nation that had previously given up on reading (not all of us, just most!). I was especially amazed at the sales figures provided that showed just how many people not only watch Oprah but purchase a book just because she takes the time to talk about it on television. While I was previously annoyed by the concept of Oprah's Book Club and felt that it was all about revenue, I have now come to understand that it is because of her that thousands of Americans have once again discovered that joy of reading. This book takes a look at not only what the club has done for Oprah and her readers, but it also discusses how the authors of books chosen to be included in the club often go from being unknown writers to some of the most famous people in the literary world. It's amazing the power that one admired person with a television show possesses...

I definitely recommend that anyone of any age (middle school and up) read this book. It does not read like a textbook...it's much more personal and interesting. I can imagine it being a great conversation piece among friends or used for a term paper/speech topic. The time I spent reading it was time well spent!

Review Date: 1999-07-01
This collection of 23 essays on the future of man and his technology is truly amazing. Written almost fifty years ago, ACC describes the requirements and experience of going to space, going to the moon, going to the planets and going to the stars... Often with original points-of-view and fantastic mental experiments. The best of all is how accurate his conceptions, predictions and extrapolations are. This book opens one's mind to who, what and where humanity is.

This book is out of print and pretty hard to find, but if you ever come across a copy of it I highly reccommend you pick it up. It is a masterpiece of speculative essays. In it, Clarke accurately predicts many things... of course lots of things about space and satellite communications, and even an accurate description of the internet! Also of note are essays on what we should do if we have contact with an alien race, a debunking of UFO sightings (much needed), a debunking of the cliche "nothing is impossible" with a listing of things that are, much talk on the speed of light and relativity, and of course a lot about space. The two most interesting essays in my view are one that speculates on what the Star of Bethleham (Clarke settles on a supernova). Also, there is the short essay "God and Einstein" which is one of the most thought-provoking things I have ever read in my life. Highly reccommended.

The Rulers of Russia Versus The Mystical Body of Christ.
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 19 total.
Review Date: 2003-02-09
_The Rulers of Russia_ is an examination of some of the Bolshevik leaders and Russian party chiefs who created the Soviet disaster and attempts to show how these forces are linked to international finance and various Judaic elements. Rev. Denis Fahey contends that the modern world is headed in the direction of greater servility, communism, and "naturalistic" supplantation of true religion. Opposed to this tendency stands the great tradition of Christ's Catholic Church. The author examines some dictatorships such as Hitler's Germany which attempted to oppose international finance based on a false religion of racial worship. Against this the author proposes that we must return to the mystical Body of Christ in an effort to achieve a truly Christian society. This essay is also interesting for its discussions of banking, the gold standard, and the role of international finance and racial idolatry in the affairs of the modern world.

Let Russia Arise from "Judeo-Masonic" Domination!

Review Date: 2003-12-30
_The Rulers of Russia_ by Rev. Denis Fahey, an Irish Catholic priest, is about the Jewish government of Russia imposed by the Bolshevik takeover of Russia after the overthrow of Nicholas II. It was originally published during the Second World War as a supplement to Fahey's main book concerning the conflict between the Roman Catholic Church and Judaism, _The Mystical Body of Christ_. Ever since Christ's Crucifixion, explains Fahey, the "supernatural order" of Christ has been opposed by the "natural order" deriving from the race/religion of the Jews and various offshoot cults such as the Freemasons. The Jews are in a conspiracy to overthrow the Mass and the authority of the Church in all areas of the world. The reasons for this conflict is because the Jews rejected Christ as the supernatural Messias and seek of their own will the "natural" Messias, who will place the world under the power of international Jewry. Various anti-Christian campaigns have been launched to further this plan. International finance and liberal, capitalist democracies and republics are controlled from above, which are apparently opposed by radical, communist and socialist revolutionaries from below. The trick is Jews and the demonic force behind them control both sides of this conflict.

This book is rather unique because it is anti-Nazi as well as anti-Jewish. Fahey divides the powers of the world into two categories: the "Judeo-Masonic" democracies (including the Soviet Union) that have their economies under the thumb of Jewish bankers versus the reactionary fascist nations of Germany, Italy and Japan. These fascist countries were free from Judeo-Masonic control of their economies, and Nazism in Germany was militantly anti-Jewish. What is unusual about German National Socialism is it followed the same "naturalistic" principle, which is behind Jewish world power. Nazism seeks to supplant the Christian view of the world with the deification of the Aryan race. Furthermore, mention is made of the secret occult lodges that sought to emulate the heretical Knights Templar and that formed the Nazi movement based on the 19th century German Idealist philosophers. Although Hitler made statements in public that the Third Reich was not persecuting Christians, in particular Catholics, Fahey quotes high ranking Church officials who attest to the Nazi deception of Christians. Fahey remarks that the Third Reich and Herr Hitler are doomed in the face of overwhelming hostility from the combined might of Jewish finance which has the arsenal of Great Britain, the United States and the Soviet Union at its disposal. The only countries for whom Fahey has much sympathy are Francisco Franco's Spain and Poland's Catholic nationalism, which resisted both Nazi and Soviet encroachments, despite Poland's being a pawn of the Britain and France to stir up trouble with Germany. The conclusion to this pamphlet is a traditional Catholic take on democracy. The current "Judeo-Masonic" democracy in America is illegitimate because it does not rest on God for its ultimate authority, but instead refers to the "common will" of the people as if it was infallible. Regrettably, no mention is made of Orthodox Christianity itself inside Russia in the face of Bolshevik persecution.

"Jews have been the real Rulers of Russia" (!)

This outstanding and remarkable book written by Father Dennis Fahey is a «classic» among the literature related to Jewish plans for World domination... On his work, the author pointed out the real rulers of Russia since the bolchevism revolution of 1917 have been the jews... showing proofs of all types in order to get to his thesis: names of komintern and politburo figures, comissairs, ambassadors, and tracking the jewish origin of people such as K. Marx (Mordekai), V. I. Lenin (Ulianov Blank), Trotsky, etc. etc. Moreover, the book deals with the question about jewish naturalism and how far it can ruined christian society; as for many centuries history facts have been demonstrated... To sum up, and following Catholic Doctrine, Father Dennis Fahey show us the only way the world should be rule is under the principles of Christ the King, joining his Mystical Body. Reading this book will find you all the time wasted not learning about the jewish danger all over the world!

This is the story of the famous saint through whom we received the Miraculous Medal. No sacramental since the Rosary has had such an impact on the Church. The author spent 10 years in research, studying many documents never before available. What he has produced is a definitive life of the Saint which is both highly readable and inspiring. You will come to love St. Catherine Laboure, will see in her a woman of incredible strength and character, of unbelievable constancy, of kindness, humility, obedience and self-effacement. Here was a saint who, from her early years was "entirely mystic," to quote her sister; who from age 12 served 10 years as mistress to her father's large household of 17 (five family members and 12 farm hands), who worked 40 years with constant fidelity running an old man's retirement-nursing home for her order; who after the Miraculous Medal apparitions, would speak to the Blessed Mother at any time she chose and be answered by Our Lady; who was a tower of strength to her order during two revolutions; and who made innumerable prophecies that came true. Full of hidden gems. Enthralling story! Full of terrific photos including some of her incorrupt body. 239pp. PB. Imprimatur.

Even though the Miraculous Medal is probably one of the most popular sacramnetals, up there with the Rosary and the Brown Scapular, most people do not really know the visionary, St. Catherine Laboure. For some strange reason she's not a well-known as St. Bernadette ( Lourdes ) or San Juan Diego ( Guadalupe ), two other saints our Lady has revealed her Immaculate Conception. I bought this book with some reserve because most books I have read about saints have been so overly dramatic that it's almost hard to believe that the saint was also a human being. This book was a surpise, Father Dirvin did such a good job of researching and writing , the book is very interesting. You can see the person of St. Catherine as a true saintly person and also a human being. She was a very hard working person, with her family, later with the Sisters of Charity, and in taking care of the old men. She was a very real person, not given to ecstasies, she even took notice of the Blessed Virgin's outfit when she came to see her and how she looks like. Her Guardian Angel have to remind her that " This is the Blessed Virgin ". This book is really wonderful, fast- paced and great reading. As Rev. Skelly wrote in the foreword " This is a book you will find very hard to lay aside until you have read the final sentence on the last page. "

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Seasons of Harvest. The characters, from primitive man onward, captured my interest and concern. I found the story of generation after generation of primitive Indians to be interesting from a cultural and historical point of view, as well as an engaging character study. I could not wait to read the remaining 2 books in the sequel when I finished "Seasons".

Matobi! It's the story of friendship, secret clubs, codes and exploration, all set along a beach and on an island.

I picked up this book last year at the friends of the library shelf maintained by the Dublin library in Starbuck's on Regional Road. I chose it because I like Arnold Lobel's illustrations and as it's an "I Can Read" book it's perfect for Sean who is now learning how to read. At the moment it's one of a select number of books in rotation for me to read to Sean while he's taking his evening bath.

The Secret Three is one of the many books that Arnold Lobel illustrated for other authors. In this story by Mildred Myrick, two boys spending the summer at the beach find a third friend by way of a message sent in a bottle. The story has a nice introduction to how tides work and some basic cryptology as the boys send encrypted messages to each other.

The best book ever which brings back wonderful memories of one of my three brothers reading this to me when I was about 5 years old. We used to sit on top of a big chest of drawers behind a curtain and read about three boys who sent messages in a bottle and formed the most exciting club. Matobi. The whole experience was magical and brought the book alive and absolutely real. My four children think this is a book that is amazing and rate this as one of their favourite books. They conjure up all sorts of adventures for the holidays just as I did as a kid. It's brilliant to fire the imagination and get children using make-believe and inventing things from natural materials. A must for a seaside holiday or somewhere near the coast. Enjoy! Relive the magic of your naive and beautiful childhood.

I'm happy to say that I now am able to read the same copy of this book to my own children that I myself once read as a child. Most appropriate for kids aged about 5 to 10 I'd say, though it can certainly appeal to kids outside that group as well. Three friends send bottles by sea with coded messages to each other and form a secret club. A good book for people who want their kids to develop an interest for imaginitive play and adventure, or as a precursor to books like the Hardy Boys series. Fun illustrations and large, easy-to-read print. Matobi!
