A Practical Tool for Biblical Counselors
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-06-04
Curing the Heart is a wonderful, concise overview of the methodology of counseling that is biblical. This work outlines the process of helping people with the struggles of life from the perspective of God's Word. This process includes coming alongside, giving hope, gathering data, defining the problem biblically, teaching the truth of the Word, seeking a commitment, giving good homework, and helping people become a functioning member of the body of Christ. This book is a great read and a handy reference!

A Comprehensive and Comprehendable Biblical Counseling Approach

Review Date: 2005-12-17
"Curing the Heart" by Howard Eyrich presents a truly biblical model of counseling, and does so in a comprehensive, comprehendible manner. It is detailed and packed with data, while also well-written and user-friendly.

Section one presents the need for a biblical approach, arguing for the development of a biblical psychology where the Creator informs us about the nature of the creature. Eyrich's biblical psychology presents the Bible's message about humanity in a living and dynamic way, and shows how to use the Bible as a counseling tool that targets the heart.

In section two, he shifts from a biblical counseling model to the biblical counselor. Here he highlights the content, character, and competence of the biblical counselor.

Section three overviews the counseling process. Here we have a plethora of counseling intervention methods, each explained biblically and practically.

This excellent manual is made even better by the inclusion of four appendices with practical helps for actually ministry.

"Curing the Heart" should be mandatory reading for lay leaders, pastors, counselors, and students interested in understanding and developing their model of biblical counseling and their skillfulness as a biblical counselor.

Reviewer: Bob Kellemen, Ph.D., is the author of "Soul Physicians," "Spiritual Friends," "Biblical Counseling," "Martin Luther's Counseling," and "Beyond the Suffering: Embracing the Legacy of African American Soul Care and Spiritual Direction."

"Curing the Heart" is an excellent primer for Biblical Counseling. This book demonstrates that, for the Christian, the Bible is an adequate source for counseling totally apart from any secular psyhological methods, especially since the fields of psychology and psychiatry are in direct opposition to the Christian faith. Those who counsel Christians will find this book to be an excellent resource.

As a new student to Christian Counseling this was one of the first books I had to read as an assignment. Not only did I read it but I could not put it down. I wound up reading it four times, and each time I felt that my knowledge base doubled. Even though the book was written several years ago, its principles will hold true forever.

One of the most inspiring stories was about Maxene Andrews of the famous Andrews Sisters. Each of us think about our limitations sometimes, about our fear of failure, and sometime we feel it is just TOO late to reach that goal, begin again, try one more time for the brass ring. Well, Maxene's story will give you HOPE that it is NEVER, ever too late to begin again. At least, that's what it did for me. OH, and the fact that I wrote the story has no bearing on this review. Maxene died 10 years ago, however, she, and the example she set, lives within me still. AND, I did begin again! Just like Mackie did!

A must-have for all Christians!

This book is filled with great pieces of advice, as well as touching stories. I got it at the library, but I decided that I have to own it. I've been sharing this book with my grandma and my aunt. It's helped us live together in harmony and to get along with everyone else in our family.

Families have so many challenges these days, especially when it comes to raising young ones. Family devotions such as those in this book can do so very much in keeping each members' thoughts on the important spiritual values. Owning this book and making the devotions in it part of your daily family time together can help so very much in keeping the needed communication lines open. In this day and age, parents need all the help they can get, and there are definitely good guidelines in this book.

Hilarious stories. As a parent I really enjoyed them, especially seeing how parents cope with the outrageous, silly, and sometimes annoying things kids do. My kids (ages 13, 12, and 9) really like reading the stories also, and seeing they are not the only ones that do silly and sometimes stupid things. GREAT BOOK!

I had never heard of Paul Ferrini and after reading several of his books I have been so inspired and transformed by his writings. He expresses his teachings is such a clear, gentle way that I have never experienced before. I have a small fortune invested in so many books of this nature by different authors and have yet to read books that have impacted me the way Paul Ferrini's books do. You feel he is speaking directly into your heart and I have learned so much. I highly recommend to anyone seeking comfort and guidance in a way you may never have received it before in reading a book. All of his books are good and I have almost all of them. I wish his books were in every household, school, church, etc. His teachings are that powerful and so necessary in the world we live in today. Please discover this wonderful man's books and you will never, ever regret it..I wish I could give the book 10 stars!

"Challenging times must be weathered"

Review Date: 2007-04-23
This book came right on time for me. Reading this opened my eyes and my heart to some things that I needed to see. If you are in a rough spot with a relationship, I think this book could help you. It has helped me. I was strongly focused on all the things that I didn't like about the other person, and justifying the reasons I wanted out. Reading this changed my perspective.

I've read that the things we can't tolerate in others are the very things that we cannot forgive ourselves for. So, when we think it's the other person we can't stand, really it's ourselves we can't stand. When we think the other person will never change, we're afraid we'll never change.

This book explains love and relationships as they really are, not the fairy tales that we want to believe they are. The tough times are part of the love as much as the happy/content times. This is about real and grown up love, not puppy/infatuation love. This will guide you through the pain and fears of your love and marriage or relationship.

"Difficult, challenging times must be weathered. Love must be strengthened beyond neediness and self interest. It must die a thousand deaths to learn to rise like the phoenix beyond adversity of any kind." -From the book.

"The issue is always what we are able to bring. Until we can bring all of ourselves, the person looking back at us will never meet our expectations." -from the book.

Lots of wisdom in this book. I think marriage counselors should have a copy of this to give out and go over with their couples. I have read and re-read this, and I know I'll be referring to it often.

I very highly recommend this book. It made a tremendous difference in my life!

I was moved to write a review on this most unusual and beautiful book. I found this book quite by accident. When I finished reading it, I thought it was the most important book I have ever read. For me, this book was about love, what love means, how we hold love in our hearts, and the depth of love in our souls. The book is interwoven with the most beautiful poetry. I found myself weeping at times, suddenly and unexpectedly. I believe I was weeping because the ideas expressed in this book were consistent with what I have always believed and held to be true, about the meaning of love, God, my spiritual path, and most especially, about my belief in soul-mates. I don't know how Paul Ferrini knew what was in my heart, but he did. I shared this book with my best friend apprehensively, wondering if she would feel as I did. When she finished the book, she told me that she thought it was one of the most important books she had ever read. I was happy to have her agreement, but knew it really would not have mattered how the book touched her. I would still have my own true experience. I read two other books by Paul Ferrini after reading this one. But I have shared about my experience of this book with at least 20 people, since reading it last month. Finding this book was an act of divine intervention, I am convinced.

An excellent followup to "Left for Dead"! A must-read!

I completely concur with clangley's review of this book. Death by Deception is the followup book to Dick Quinn's earlier book Left for Dead. In this book, Dick's daughter explains how congestive heart failure is most frequently there waiting for the person who survives a heart attack. She elaborates how cayenne saved her father's life, but how her father relied on it too exclusively to keep him alive and subsequently didn't make the lifestyle changes necessary for him to avoid eventual heart failure. She then goes into excellent detail describing how heart failure develops and what exactly it is. She describes all of the conventional treatments for heart failure and elaborates on the strengths and ultimate weaknesses of these conventional treatments. She then describes a regimen of using natural herbs--including of course cayenne--that help keep both heart attack and congestive heart failure at bay.

I've recommended this book to I don't know how many people. I consider this book a must-read for any male over the age of 35, and a must-read for any female who's approaching menopause, the time heart disease creeps up on many unsuspecting women.

If you don't ever plan on living this long, forget this book! Otherwise, whip out your credit card and order it already!!

This Book is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

A valuable book on congestive heart failure (CHF)

I knew Dick Quinn well. I knew him very well. He was a good friend.

I saw Dick struggle with CHF -- the ultimate outcome of heart disease -- and I saw him recover using an exotic African herb that lengthened his life and made his struggle with this terrible life-threatening illness far less painful. For most, a diagnosis of CHF is a death sentence, but this book gives hope.

This book is the only one of its kind that shows victims of CHF how to get a life sentence instead of a death sentence.

Dick's highly successful lifelong struggle with heart disease and its ultimate outcome - CHF - is an inspiration to anyone struggling with this terrible life-threatening disease. Dick extended his life for many precious days (years actually) using a variety of herbs that modern medicine is reluctant to embrace. Some of these herbs had instant and immediate impact on his vitality. I know because I saw it.

If you have, or know of someone with CHF, this book can help significantly lessen the suffering, and increase lifespans.

I am a living product of Dick Quinns first book.

I wanted to see what Dick Quinn added to his currant book and how he was doing today. I followed his advice in the first book in 1995, just out of the hospital myself with a heart attack, I have not experienced ANY further heart problems to date. The herbs in combination work 100%. I thank him for his courage in sharing his experience with us all.

They Rode the Freedom Train and Held On For Their Lives
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2002-04-07
Imagine leaving your comfortable world as you knew it in the erly 1960's. Young white women; some from the north, some from the south. Rural and urban, college kids, middle class, working class and just plain poor. Heading to a dangerous world and joining the early days of the Civil Rights Movement. Leaving behind the scorn, disdain, and ridicule of family and friends. Walking into a climate of hate and bigotry, and joining in civil disobedience against segregation. Walking in the picket lines, sometimes fearing for your life; organizing, and joining in singing hymns of freedom. Going from tears of frustration to smiles of great joy, while hitching a ride on that freedom train and holding on for dear life.
One recent eveing at Northern Lights Book Store and Cafe in St. Johnsbury, Vt., 70 people heard two local women who participated passionately in that movement. The authors read from their book, Deep In Our Hearts: Nine White Women in the Freedom Movement.
The book is an eloquent and powerful one that takes us back to one of the most tumultuous periods in American history; the erly days of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), Freedom Summer, voter registrations, lunch counter sit-ins and the rise of Black Power and the women's movement. Deep In Our Hearts is a collection of essays, that take us into the lives of a group of young women who were transformed by the Civil Rights Movement.
The audience listened as Penny Patch looked back and read softly. "I understand well that what was between us will never be again, but still, that experience remains at the core of who I am. The fact that some of us had deep friendships that crossed all racial lines is simply a miracle. For short periods of time, in those early yers, we leaped over all the history and all of the minefields between us."
Perched on a stool and sipping warm tea to sooth a sore throat, Theresa Del Pozzo read from the book. "My involement with the movement began as a moral reaction to the blatant injustice of segregation and the denial of basic human rights of African-Americans. Along the way I got an education in the intricate patterns of racism and began to experience what I think as the small-c culture of the African_American community: the wisdom, dignity, strength, humor, gentleness and creativeness of its everyday life and people. The experience of living within the black world changed forever the person I was to become and the way I live my adult life."
Listening to the authors as they told their stories one could not help but admire their courage and admire this courageous book. They stand as powerful testaments to a time when the goal of universal justice was truly in sight and to the hope that a new generation of blacks and whites will take up the challenge to make the world a better place.

Forty years ago, in regard to the "race question," white people in this country fell into five general categories: those who never gave a thought to race-based segregation and discrimination (the numbers of whom could probably be counted on one hand); those who through ignorance or paranoia thought that African-Americans were in one way or another "inferior" beings, which somehow justified our own brand of apartheid; those who knew or suspected that the "inferiority" premise applied to African-Americans was bogus but who profited from that fiction being maintained; those who knew or believed that the inferiority idea was false but who, through reluctance or apathy, chose to do or say nothing about it, and those who, deep in their hearts, knew that the inferiority thesis was false and cruelly unfair, knew that our apatheid system made a lie of all the claims of equality our nation prided itself on, and who chose to confront it in an attempt to bring segregation and discrimination to an end through personal involvement and direct action. The nine white women who contributed to this book the stories of their development and their involvement in the civil rights struggle were of that last category. They never really saw themselves as particularly strong or smart, although their writing shows them to be exceptionally articulate, and none of them were brought up by their families to become involved in that fight. They took it upon themselves to make their own stands and become part of that effort regardless of the personal risks. "Deep In Our Hearts" is aptly named - what springs out at us from their stories is their simple strength, the heart-deep commitment to social justice, that helped make this country face up to its promises to all of its citizens. That they came from genuinely different backgrounds reflects the diversity that sets our country apart and which puts the lie to common assumptions about them, such as that they were born of affluent families from the northeast and went south with Ivy League educations and high-flown notions of setting things right. What is also remarkable about their stories and their lives is that they have continued with that commitment to equality and fairness in varied ways; they never saw fit to rest upon their laurels once this nation recognized, in words at least, that racial segregation and discrimination were wrong and brought down the obvious barriers to equality. These little stories, none more than forty-eight pages long, also spell out how their subsequent involvement in combating the Vietnam War was a logical progression, the same struggle on a different front. Although some of them became front-line soldiers in the fight to free women from their own set of shackles, all of them contributed to modern feminism and women's rights more by their actions than by their words. To them, and to the many whose stories who are not in this book, we all owe a debt of gratitude. If not for them this country may not have been able to look itself in the eye in the bathroom mirror. The collective lesson of these stories is that one need not come from uncommon beginnings in order to develop the will to lead extraordinary, adventuresome, purposeful lives. Read their stories, be inspired without being preached to, and put some meat on the dry bones of history.

Just finished reading " Deep In Our Hearts", a book I'd like to strongly recommend. It captures on a very personal level, the spirit of the Civil Rights era, from the perspective of nine different white women who were deeply involved in the struggle to bring about more racial justice. It is a moving tribute to all the heroes of that very difficult time. To all who were involved at the time or those who are the least bit curious of "what went down", you cannot fail to admire the stories of these brave women. This is history (herstory) as it should be related-from the participants.

These wonderful short stories are great. My favorite was by Brenda Bancroft. The charactor had real flaws that endeared her to the readers. The plot was fanatatic, kept me so engrossed I could not put it down. This is just the book for those stressed out because it can be read in short intervals. I have enjoyed this collection of stories as much as the first two. If you really like this there are also a collection of historical short stories by the same publisher.

Doris English's story was so very touching, and Brenda Bancroft creats a very deep charecter. All 4 stories are worth reading again and again. Of course, my husband liked the action and he liked seeing the bad guys get what they had coming. We are anxious to read the sequel.

recommend it. I don't normally read westerns, but
this one kept my interest and I'm looking forward
to the next one.

I got the book from a local signing done by the author. When reading the book I could imagine being right there. Having visited a few old cowboy towns, this book describes the scenes as if you are there. I look forward to more books from this author. A very good read.

This novel is a substantial read to be savoured.

Happy Sigh ...I Love this series and the two main characters. This is a rollicking good story in this series. I really got to learn a lot about Ryan and Jamie and Pride Weekend!

In Awakenings, the first novel of the the I Found My Heart in San Francisco series, we met Ryan O'Flaherty and Jamie Evans, juniors at the University of California at Berkeley.

I was completely delighted to see this novel in print. Excellent writing, perfectly paced plot, lovable characters, as well as characters you can come to loathe. I was riveted to every page and didn't want to put the book down. I always hold off opening this author's novels until first thing Saturday morning so I can read as much as possible in the next 48 hours.

The two main characters, Jamie and Ryan, are as endearing as ever (I just can't get enough of them) - as well as passionate and very sexy. In addition, their extended family and group of friends are endlessly interesting. The author explores them thoroughly so that the reader gets to know them as well as we do Jamie and Ryan.

In addition to a great plot the humor is laugh out loud funny. The author, who I thought was perfection in her other novels, All That Matters, Cherry Grove and Arbor Vitea just keeps surprising me with one hit novel after another.

I couldn't want more (already looking forward to re-reading it) and yet I am clamoring for the next novel in this series. I must mention that the quality of the book itself is outstanding from the paper to the cover to the printing.

This is a Keeper!

Don't miss the other novels in this great series:

Awakenings
Beginnings
Coalescence
Disclosures
Entwined
Fidelity
Getaway

This is the continuation of Jamie & Ryan's love story that was begun in Susan's book - Awakenings. The beauty of this series is that Susan takes the time to flesh her characters out. Each character in the story becomes a friend the reader will look for in the next book. She is also a master at conveying the feelings of new love. Susan doesn't write short books so you always get your money's worth.

Susan has done it again! Disclosures is yet another fantastic addition to the I Found My Heart series. This book deals with Jamie & Ryan settling into married life, and with Jamie coming out to family & friends (not always voluntarily). Jamie has to get used to being perceived as a lesbian even if she isn't ready to adopt the label yet. Ryan begins to grasp just how much money Jamie really has & must adjust to the lifestyles of the rich & famous. Maids, gardeners, car detailing services, expensive restaurants, buying a Lexus with Amex - it's quite a culture shock for a scholarship student who has been saving for grad school by pinching every penny until it screams.

Susan also does a nice job showing the different characters' reactions to Jamie's new lifestyle. Jamie has always been closer to her father than her mother, & she predicted that her father would accept her new lifestyle quickly & her mother would be somewhat uptight. Instead, her dad freaked out & her mother was fine.

The print version of Disclosures is a well edited, high-quality book. The cover is a nice, heavy stock, the design is beautiful, and the binding didn't show any tilt or creasing even after reading it twice. Brisk Press is definitely a cut above many of the other `Uber' publishers. Don't settle for the web version of this series; the books will be a fine addition to your lesbian fiction collection.
