A Genuinely Valuable Addition to the Qigong LiteratureReview Date: 2006-01-28
It is clear from the very beginning that this is someone who "walks the talk." Not only does it ring true, but there is also something else that speaks to the authenticity of the book: I was taught many of the exercises by a qigong Master in Nanjing, China, in 1991. And to my knowledge, they have never been published anywhere else.
The book is a fascinating narrative, as well as a set of practices. It does not attempt to provide details of some of the very interesting research that is being done into qigong, so it will not convince a sceptic. Unless he or she will give it a try!
Enjoyable and empowering!
A true gem waiting to be discovered. Review Date: 2005-09-15
Finally someone has communicated, in terms we can understand, - and literally FEEL - how to connect with this seemingly mysterious force called "qi" (pronounced "chee" - life force energy) and how to establish a life-long relationship with it through a gentle daily practice. While there is much to read about and reflect on in content, what this book does so well, with each chapter, is paint a picture of what "qi" is and what it feels like through the sensitivity of this master. Beyond any visual image or mental concept that might be conjured up, this picture is a feeling - the very essence of something subtle yet powerful, something ever-changing, vibrant and alive - as life itself. This is not a picture easily painted but Katherine Orr does it with grace - her writing the very embodiment of this art form itself.
Yes, the easy-to-follow movements in the book are pleasurable and centering (and even easier to follow with the companion DVD), however, what I found most profound about the practices - which are like fluid moving meditations - is their ability to take me beyond mind, to both calm and lift the spirit, to transport and transform. There are so many wonderful and powerful truths presented in this book - read it, experience it for yourself and you will feel yourself tapping in to qi - and to a whole "new," yet ever-present, reality.

"Borrowed Time" 5 StarsReview Date: 2007-09-19
particular "Doc" Holliday and the Earps, I decided
to pick up a copy of "Borrowed Time".
Almost instantly I found myself teleported back in
time to places rich in detail and atmosphere. From
the rolling plains to the bustling cowtowns, I could
clearly envision myself in these settings. The
descriptions were vivid as well as historically
accurate which as a student of the Old West I found
very satisfying. I could almost smell the smoke
filled saloons, or feel the cold wind blowing in
from the plains.
Doc Holliday, usually portrayed as a one
dimensional, almost abrasive character in books and
film was brought to life in Ballard's story as a
living, breathing, complicated man complete with
real emotions and a depth that's severely lacking in
most other characterizations. This not only applies
to Holliday but all of the other characters as well.
I particularly enjoyed the banter between Doc and
Wyatt, conversations that seemed as natural as any
you might have with a best friend. None of their
interactions seemed contrived or stiff.
The story telling, besides being richly
descriptive, also had an easy going style and a nice
flow, balanced nicely between dialog and action.
This was one of the few stories I've read, Western
or otherwise that I felt connected to the characters
and cared about them as well.
It was an engrossing novel I simply couldn't put
down. A winner for sure and honestly I can't wait to
read the second book in this series and anything
else that S.M. Ballard writes.

Review of S.M. Ballard's BORROWED TIME by J.D. HarkleroadReview Date: 2008-01-25
Borrowed Time is S.M. Ballard's first in a trilogy about the life and times of John Henry "Doc" Holliday. Before I read this novel, my first thought was What more can be said about Doc Holliday than has already been said? Boy, was I wrong! Until now (with the notable exception of Val Kilmer's portrayal of Doc in the movie Tombstone), Holliday has only appeared as a shadowy appendage peripherally attached to Wyatt Earp's coat-tails. Ballard, however, brings Doc Holliday to life in his own right, fleshing the man out while revealing little-known layers of his life. The reader feels as if he is observing first-hand Holliday's transformation from his genteel, cultured background as Dr. John Henry Holliday to the hot-tempered gunman/alcoholic who came to be known as "Doc" Holliday.
Ballard has thoroughly researched her subject and it shows. The Tombstone Times, Arizona's History and Information Journal, has published numerous non-fiction articles by Ballard, many of them about Doc Holliday. The character so engrossed her that the concept for a Holliday trilogy was born.
Borrowed Time is not another "shoot-em-up-Tony." While action abounds in this novel, two other story-lines run parallel to the main plot. One illuminates Doc's interpersonal relationships: his abiding friendship with Wyatt Earp; his love/hate relationship with "Big Nose Kate" (Fisher) Elder who, by the way, did not have a big nose; his antagonistic relationships with both Bat Masterson and Wyatt's brother Virgil. The other story-line revolves around Holliday's struggle to live as normal a life as possible while dealing with an illness that, in that time period, proved fatal more often than not. The reader, however, gets so caught up in the Doc Holliday character that, even knowing how the trilogy will ultimately end (we all die sometime) is in no way a deterrent.
Borrowed Time is a great read that will appeal to both men and women, and I'm eagerly looking forward to Holliday in Tombstone, the second in Ballard's trilogy due out in 2008.

A clear critique of biopsychiatryReview Date: 2002-04-13
Colbert's own view of the causes and cures of "mental illness" is just one way of stating a general truth, but it zeroes in on the reality of what "mental illness" and its "cures" are all about. As he states at pages 116 and 117:
"1. We all hurt each other at times, both unintentionally and intentionally.
2.We all need others to heal those hurts.
3. We all deny to some extent how we hurt others, and how we need others to heal our hurts.
People create exotic theories about the causes of strange behavior and emotional disorders, because it's too uncomfortaable to admit our basic human need for each other, and because we don't like to face the fact that we can hurt and be hurt by our fellow humans....Let's not hide any longer behind our fancy theories and our often abusive cures. Let's learn what it takes to attend to and heal wounded hearts."
This may sound like wishful thinking, but Colbert makes plain that the real wishful thinking is done by biopshciatry, an edifice of mutually supporting empirical and logical errors, held together mainly by its adherents' own determination to be convinced of thier own preconceptions.
I have read twenty-five books on this subject, most more technical than this one. The beauty of this book is that it accurately conveys the essence of a technical subject without itself being technical.
Truly and Wholly HealingReview Date: 1999-11-19
This contrasted strongly with proponents of the biopsychiatry who present models of supposed biological-defect or chemical-imbalance. They sound quite convincing until Dr Colbert looked deeper into the actual research and found the claims to be very weak indeed. Meanwhile, the list of so-called "mental disorders" keeps increasing as does the medication of them. In this model, pain is denied, symptoms surface, but are seen as the product of a defect and are suppressed medically.
Over 15 years he developed the "Emotional Pain Model" detailed in Broken Brains or Wounded Hearts - What Causes Mental Illness (Kevco, 1999). It represents a desire to take the mystery out of mental illness and provide a clear path for the future, allowing the reader to develop a proper understanding of any and all emotionally troubling conditions.
Dr Colbert proposes a three-phase model for eliminating emotional disorders and developing emotionally healthy children: People are taught to ientify feelings and resolve conflicts; Symptoms are seen as indicators of an overload of emotional pain; Non-medical, non-abusive healing environments are developed.
This book is an important contribution, validating an approach to therapy that is truly and wholly healing. As he says, "To see emotional disorders as diseases to be drugged is to hide from our own pain, as well as the pain of the afflicted .... The more we see and understand their pain, the more we will be able to see our own pain and become unafraid to reach out."

His Holiness's eloquence and understanding of compassion are great and vast as an ocean. I realized this while reading the book. It took me over two months' time to get to page 30, because I was determined on completely understanding and grasping the meanings of each page before I moved onto the next. I was also determined to apply each page's teachings into my life before I'd move onto the next. How wrong I was to think I would finish this book in a timely fashion.
I would read a few pages, then set the book aside and contemplate on the teachings. I'd carry His Holiness's words in my heart and my mind as I went about my day's events. I'd go back to read the book, thinking I'd pick up where I left off. While skimming through the pages I had already read, I'd stop and notice that I realized something about a paragraph. How curious, I had already read it, but suddenly it was as if I were reading it again with fresh eyes, and I'd learn yet something else. Doing this again and again, it took me two months before finishing page 30. Then I'd look back on the past few months and realize I had basically changed into a much more patient and caring person.
I started on this book a long while back, and I'm still discovering and rediscovering truths and revelations in His Holiness's simple words.
The reason I provided the small anecdote is because this book can last you a lifetime if you apply His Holiness's teachings into your life. There is a lifetime's worth of lessons to be learned from the seemingly simple exterior of his teachings.
This book basically starts us at the basics and teaches us the fundamentals of Buddhism. What is suffering? What is the cause of suffering? How do we overcome suffering? The Dalai Lama goes over the Four Noble Truths and the Three Poisons (ignorance, greed, hatred) in such a friendly, warm, simple and engaging manner that we can't help but sit there and listen. I felt as if I were a preschooler listening to my favorite teacher while reading this book, and truly, when reading this book with an open, receptive mind, you'll feel as if you're re-learning all the basics about everything. It's as if we've walked all our lives in a manner that has caused us to trip and fall constantly, and here His Holiness is giving us a guide that teaches us why we were walking incorrectly, why our previous way of walking would cause us to fall, and finally, how to practice walking correctly in a manner that won't cause us to fall and hurt ourselves.
Usually, I review books and items pretty harshly. I'll point out descrepancies, things I didn't like, etc. I'm at a loss with this book. I've been a Buddhist for my entire life and after reading this book, I realized just how far from understanding I was. Don't be fooled by the deceptive simplicity of this book. It's one thing to read something and understand it, but in trying to apply it, this book will provide a lifetime's worth of lessons, knowledge, and understanding. It's as if the closer you come to accepting what the Dalai Lama always teaches -- compassion -- the more understanding you gain from the book that perhaps you never saw there before.
This is a book, I feel, that anybody can read. All it does is offer insight into suffering, what causes us to suffer, and how we overcome suffering. It's not about His Holiness preaching on and on about the Dharma. It's about him taking the best of the Dharma and bringing it to you in a very reader-friendly format, coupled with his own explanations.
I couldn't think of anything better.
