I loved this novel. It has a rocking narrative, a pace that never lets up. The author shows the denizens of old Brooklyn without every worrying about being politically correct or offending anyone. But in the end, the writer's love for the place and its people is overwhelmingly moving. A great summer read.

I am 52 years old and actually grew up on 68th and 12th, right across the street from the school yard where Nicky Shades was Namath everyday (I'm sure he was also a great stick ball player). I found Tim's book to be an accurate portrayal of many of the people from the neighborhood, conversely we did have doctors, lawyers, politicians and successfull business people graduate from 69th street and the schoolyard. I found the book's characters very life like and enjoyed mentions of New Corners and Regina Pacis(can you believe the schools closing). I've read several Jim Leher novels and if you enjoy reading Jim Leher, you will enjoy this book. May be it means more to someone who actually lived there that I enjoyed the book so much.

Better than 'Motherless Brooklyn'

I thought this book was better than the highly praised 'Motherless Brooklyn' by Jonathan Lethem (I make the comparison because they have many similarities -- Brooklyn car service setting, fringe mob characters, coming-of-age subplot, etc.). McLaughlin certainly knows his South Brooklyn setting inside-out. And his writing is a lot less cutesy and gimmicky than Lethem's. My only complaint is that the dramatic payoff to the story -- the climax, if we can call it that -- really isn't very satisfying. By the time it arrives the stakes aren't really very high, all of the tension has already been resolved by then, so the ending falls flat. But I still think the characters are very well observed throughout the book. McLaughlin shows a lot of promise as a writer. I hope he has the staying power to follow this up with even more interesting work (a la Richard Price).

Just finished Tim McLoughlin's Heart of the Old Country and found it full of old friends and enemies. Being a displaced Brooklynite I thoroughly the read. There are characters that you'll love and characters you'll love to hate.I recommend it HIGHLY.

A truly remarkable work.

Heart of the Old Country by Tim McLoughlin resonates with the sights and sounds of south-west Brooklyn, the apparent result of Mr. McLoughlin's creative talents and knowledge of his subject. Like many excellent books, Heart of the Old Country can be read on more than one level. I have just finished my second reading and can report that I found it more enjoyable than the first. The book is remisinscent of "Carlito's Way" by Edwin Torres - and just as good. I would not be surprised to see in the near future a film version and a mass paperback edition of this truly remarkable work.

The author has written a book about his personal and professional relationship with sports figures, with a concentration on the New York area Baseball scene, and that's enough for me. When I read a fewpages I could see it was alot more than what it was like to meet a figure you've seen hundreds of times on a TV monitor and in a uniform.
The book causes one to reflect poignantly on a period in Baseball history when the heroes were "working class heroes" - as they are today - but who remained in the working class after their fame. In the 1970s ballplayers sometimes had to find supplemental work - like playing in exhibition games in outside sports to their own.
The descriptions of players transitioning from the diamond to the court are very entertaining.
I'm sure scores of young fans imagined what it would be like to chat informally, to break bread with, to visit their idols at their homes. What where they like...sitting around the house. In reading "The Heart..." they can get a strong idea.
In the paragraph above I referred to "young" fans. All fans are young when they root for their team, or compete on their own team. This book will transport you back in time, to when you first visited the big ball yard on 161st; or saw a starting shortstop walk through the crowd waiting near the players' parking lot, in the direction of his car, and actually speak to *you* about...his flat tire.

I am not your normal sports or baseball fan, but I have to say that his book certainly transcends all other genre. It is truly a human interest story of tremendous portions. Angelo Saverino has a unique and distintive writing style. His writing grips the reader, you can't wait to turn the page to see what happens next. I strongly recommend The Heart of the Order for your summer reading while relaxing at the beach.

In Geshe Kelsang Gyatso's book Heart of Wisdom, he gives a commentary to the famous Essence of Wisdom Sutra, explaining the very essence of the perfection of wisdom teachings. Geshe Kelsangs Gyatso explains that by studying, contemplating, and meditating on the Sutra itself and his commentary, we can gain a perfect understanding of the nature of reality, which will help us overcome the problems and difficulties we experience in our daily life, as well as overcome obstacles preventing us from realizing our full spiritual potential.
The subject of emptiness, the ultimate nature of reality, is not an easy thing to understand. Geshe Kelsang Gyatso reveals the explicit and implicit meanings of the Essence of Wisdom Sutra in a way that is accessible and applicable in today's modern world.
I recommend this book to anyone who wants to contemplate deeply, how things really exist.

This is a very clear explanation of Buddhist emptiness according to the Madyamika-Prasangika view. It is simple, powerful and succinct. No excessive or flowery words. Straight to the point.

I feel that this book is an expression of the great compassion and kindness of the author in wanting us to realize this profound reality quickly and thus be free of every suffering.

This book is not to be regurgitated at parties to impress our friends with how much spiritual knowledge we possess but to actually understand the wisdom realizing emptiness with our heads and then, finally with our hearts. Then we can help others in the same way. How wonderful.

This is a gem. Without any flashiness Wilton draws you into the worlds of her characters before you realise it, and they stick in your head for quite some time.

Wilton's stories in this collection all feature young women trying to find happiness, satisfaction or just a way of coping with their lives. Mostly they try to do so in places outside their comfort zone, either physically or mentally. They don't always find what they want; as with most people, it's the bumps along the journey as well as the joys which make their lives what they are, something all readers can relate to.

All feature characters whose lives, thoughts and environments are vividly brought to life, something she makes seem far more simple than it is. Wilton handles everything from the comic to the horrific in her stride and she has a good feel for how to make the short story form work for her. I'll watch her career with interest.

The Heart Sutra is a book free from cliches, so I feel bad describing it with this one: it made me laugh and it made me cry.

These vibrant, engrossing stories immerse the reader in new and unfamiliar landscapes. Their strange terrains are sometimes physical: Bangkok, Edinburgh, a newly-moved-to Wellington, and sometimes emotional: two sisters clearing out the family home after their mother's death, a lonely Thai man in his box-like apartment, a young woman seeking work in a massage parlour.

Wilton brings sharp observations and a comic touch to stories of real emotional power. These characters strike the reader with the force of real people, living out the contradictions of the numb, confused and occasionally lyrical human heart.

Funny, sad and often surprising, these stories take a vivid look at human strengths and vulnerabilities, and people's skewed attempts to find happiness.

I was unable to be measured in my reading of 'The Heart Sutra' and devoured it in one sitting, not because the book contained voyeuristic or sexually gratuitous scenes, simply because the book is pacey, interesting and well written.

These stories are so rich and evocative I found myself wondering for many days afterwards about the plight of the various characters and the dilemmas they faced. My hope is that one day Wilton may develop some of these pithy stories with their believable characters and interesting surroundings into full length novels.

The complex and subtle nuances of human relationships involving spiritual, psychological and physical unions are deftly handled by Wilton with wit and sensitivity.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to this writer's next instalment.

So different was my opinion of The Heart Sutra from that of the previous reviewer (Nov 20) that I wondered if we'd read the same book. It was a collection of gems - each one a carefully crafted and engrossing snapshot of the human condition, with characters so real that you might have met, travelled with, or perhaps even slept with one or two of them. Wilton evokes the real world in vivid colours, tastes and sounds, and manages with great effect to find the poignancy in everyday events. The characters are effected by events around them, but usually react philosophically and with subtlety, often as we ourselves do. Nowhere is the book stagy or overdone.

Reading the Heart Sutra is a pleasure from start to finish. These stories should be savoured. Read them one at a time, letting each sink in for a while before starting the next. I eagerly await Wilton's next effort.

I bought this book back in the early 1990's when I started doing meditation. It has been very inspirational and uplifting. Occasionally, I come back to this book and read the positive affirmations and reflect on my personal situations. Strongly recommended for those seeking peace, clarification, a deeper understanding of Life's small & big lessons, and for those looking for thoughts to meditate on. it makes a nice gift for someone you care for and who may be struggling...enjoy.

I love to open to random pages and see how what it says always seems apt. It's a little like having an amazing friend who always answers on the first ring. I believe the best book I've ever read is "Heart Thoughts (A Treasury of Inner Wisedome)". This book, written by Louise L. Hay really has a way of opening up the minds of the readers to new ways of thinking and viewing the world around you. She introduces you to a universe of positive, personal affirmations and sets you on the path to total acceptance and love for everyone and everything. Hay shows readers that there's SO MUCH more to life than one may think. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in metaphysics and personal growth.

This is a very good book, great in fact. The only thing I would point out is that much of it centers around the fact that the author feels it necessary for one to leave their present life, and basically go into solitude to truely progress on their spiritual journey. While this may or may not be the case, many of us are unwilling to do so. For those people, I suggest Thich Nhat Hanh's writings, as they are geared toward people in all circumstances. This is not to say that this book is not of value, it certainly is! It is really quite wonderful and has many great treasures contained within. I merely want people to be aware of this reoccuring suggestion to leave the present hectic life behind.

Concise and Comprehensive Manual on Compassion

The reader is doubly blessed by The Heart Treasure of the Enlightened ones. Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, a Buddhist master of the highest order, gives practical and detailed commentary on a long poem by Patrul Rinpoche, also a Buddhist master of the highest order (see the classic, The Words of My Perfect Teacher). Where Patrul Rinpoche offers punch and precision, Khyentse Rinpoche gives paragraph after paragraph of pointed compassion. Such kindness! This book makes the reader want to be more kind. What better reason to read?

The purpose of Patrul Rinpoche's poem is to present the entire scope of the Buddhist ark in summary form, without leaving behind any essentials. According to Khyentse Rinpoche, this is important because "in this decadent age, because of their limited intelligence and lack of determination, people need to practice the Dharma in an essentialized form" (32). Chenresi (or Avalokiteshwara) practice is recommended for this reason. (Interested? You may wish to give mani wheel, or prayer wheel, practice a try.) Khyentse Rinpoche's assessment of our situation may sound pessimistic but really it's a chance for everyone to dig in and practice Dharma.

According to Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, "If you examine closely the ordinary values that underlie your urge to pursue worldly goals and try to discover where they come from, you will find that their source is a failure to investigate things properly" (40). One way into the practice of investigating things properly is Tarthang Tulku's vision of Time Space and Knowledge.

I feel so lucky to have had an opportunity to be exposed to these ideas, and I have reason to believe that all of us without exception would benefit from an increase in compassion.

Homage to all true teachers!

The Most Important book on Buddha's path that you will Ever read!

It has been said by those who know,
that His Holiness, the Fourteenth Dalai Lama of Tibet
knows a thing or two,
about a thing or two.

In the forward, the Dalai Lama not only lauds this text
as containing ALL the Essential instructions
to accomplish full enlightenment in one life time,
but he goes on to compare it to an elixir for reviving the dead!

Having had the very good fortune to receive teachings
from every major and many minor Buddhist schools
this simple devotee to the Buddha of Compassion
can concur whole heartedly with His Holiness.

This book is so important,
that I have taken it as my Primary Text
and as such, read it from cover to cover,
Every Single Month.

Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, wrote this book
from the "Rime" or NON-sectarian approach.
It has something to offer everyone
from wide-eyed beginner to 9th level Bodhisattva!

Too many Americans have gotten distracted
from Buddha's path to enlightenment
by such things as:
Culture, Language, Tradition and Politics.

THIS text was designed to protect the reader
from such foolishness
and keep them alertly aware of what is most important
in their quest to accomplish the path in THIS life!

Many Theravadans and Gelugpas discribe the path of the Sutras
in terms of Renunciation, Compassion and Insight:
Dilgo Khyentse covers these from the perspective
of both a Scholar and a Yogi!

Many Nyingmapas and Kagyupas discribe the path to enlightenment
in terms of View, Meditation and Action
or Ground, Path and Fruition:
both these systems are taught in this text.

Tantra's path is often described in terms
of Generation, Completion and Mahamudra
or Maha-yoga, Anu-yoga and Dzogchen:
again, both these systems are taught in this text.

While NO substitute for the Blessings, Transmissions
and Explanations of a fully qualified lama,
this book is an indispensable tool
for those who long to accomplish Chenrezig in THIS life time.

I enthusiastically recommend this book to all my students,
and I gently urge you to acquire it, dear reader.

And so it is in the spirit of this book's
two Bodhichittas of Compassion and Insight
and it's two Mahamudra's of Sutra and Tantra
that I now wish from the bottom of my heart:

May you dear reader; be happy and healthy,
may you practice skillfully and joyfully,
may you accomplish Chenrezig in THIS life time,
and help many others to do likewise!

As a beginning practitioner of Tibetan Buddhism, I found this book to be an excellent guide to a simple, direct, yet pround practice. Dilgo Khyentse was one of the greatest masters of Tibetan Buddhism and these teachings given not long before his passing are wonderfully fresh, realistic and down to earth about the things one faces in everyday modern life.

The practice it teaches is not difficult but it brings great peace and gives the reader practical ways to deal with the confusions and disappointments of modern life. Dilgo Khyentse was a teacher of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, and there is no way to go wrong reading anything he has taught. Of all the books I have read on Tibetan Buddhism, this one is the most helpful and most delightful.

The Heart Treasure of the Enlightened Ones is an excellent guide for Vajrayana practice according to the traditions of Tibetan Buddhism. Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche was one of the greatest Tibetan masters of this century. The translator and editor of this book, Matthieu Ricard, is one of the ablest translators today. I was fortunate to receive the teachings in this book as they were given by Khyentse Rinpoche in France in 1986. Under Ricard's expert editorship, I think they have lost none of their freshness and relevance for those curious to know more about Tibetan Buddhism, and also for experienced practitioners who wish to understand the view, meditation and conduct of Buddhism more deeply.

Heart Without Measure

This is an excellent book for anyone who is seriously interested in understanding the essence of the Gurdjieff work and how it continued after his death. It opened up a new perspective on the work for me. The book describes his meetings and conversations with Madame de Salzmann in the 1980's when he was a student with her. Although Ravindra comes across in the book as a modest man she clearly had a high regard for him and encouraged him to come and see her often - maybe she knew that he would write about the work.
He gives us the essence of her very practical, focused teaching and also conveys her powerful presence. Her teaching is unlike the intellectual descriptions of Gurdjieff's ideas found in Ouspensky's books and other descriptions of the work. What Madame de Salzman emphasises - through Ravindra - is the importance of allowing higher energy to come down into the human body and of being present. Her teaching is focused on energies,on focusing the mind on the body and becoming a channel for higher energies on the earth. It is a very practical teaching.
This is one of the best books I have read on the teachings of a true spiritual teacher and I am keen to read more of Ravindra's books.

It is a very personal and devoted account of the author's relationship with Madame de Salzmann and clearly exhibits her steadfastness and strength in her practice and being a living example of the teaching of Georges I. Ravi Ravindra captures the spirit of Gurdjieff's work for me, in one of the most personal and engaging accounts that I've seen from people in the Work. This time, though, rather than being about G. himself, it is a journal of Ravindra's encounters with G's chief disciple, Jeanne de Saltzmann.
As I nibble away at this lovely book, I find myself remembering the best parts of being in the Work, which ended for me almost 30 years ago. At the time, I knew about Mme. de Saltzmann only peripherally, being on the West coast and having been with her in person only once, so I was eager to read this book and fill in my knowledge of a true master whose efforts indirectly shaped my whole spiritual life.
I would have expected Dr. Ravindra, as a professor of at least six different subjects, to write in some dry, scholarly style. Instead, this loving tribute is revealing, approachable and very useful to anyone wishing to understand, in a personal way, what this teaching is about.

I found this book extremely refreshing but I can't help wondering if it is really only for those who do or have done similar practices [Taoist Alchemy, Prayer of the Heart, Gurdjieff's meditations and exercises for opening and harmonizing the 7 centers].

The entire book shows Madame DeSalzmann trying to raise the author from his back and forth states to a man no. 4 - that is someone who has in Gurdjieffean terms acheived balance amongst their body, heart and mind and is thus at square one and truly ready to begin and to try and crystallize something. Similar in intent to the Pentland/Patterson drama in 'Eating the I'

Like 'Eating the I' and 'Voices in the Dark' we are taken inside the inner door to a rather significant degree, but unlike 'Eating the I', this does not try and provide much context or background info. If you have not been in The Work or learned the preliminary relaxation and self-remembering practices, you will understandably be scratching your head through much of it.

However along with Bennett and Pentland the Madame seems to have made it to Man #5. And that is worth experiencing even through the medium of printed words.

I found that the book started 'meditating me' as few books do.

Ravi Ravindra's Heart Without Measure, though a small book, is a powerfully felt homage to the great Madame de Salzmann, whose voice and presence, echoing through the text, resonates like a pure and holy bell, calling us all more perfectly to The Work. He describes well the experience of the student faced with the laser-like eye of the teacher who can read hearts and souls, an encounter not easily endured nor understood, and reveals the 'everyman' conflicts of his strivings in a restrained, almost selfless way. Most of all, this book is sprinkled generously with esoteric clues for those with eyes to see and ears to hear. This book indeed is the 'fruit' of the oral tradition that has always existed within the Gurdjieffian canon.

Mary Montague Sikes clearly shows her love and understanding of Jamaica and its culture in _Hearts Across Forever_. A riveting paranormal romance, the book also delves into the fascinating world of Obeah, Jamaican voodoo. Set against this complex backdrop, the romance of Kathryn Calder and Flynt Kincaid, both New York executives, unfolds. The reader feels compelled to keep turning the pages to discover the connection between Kathryn and her mysterious visions of Rose Hall...and how does Flynt fit into it all? This reader devoutly hopes that Sikes will continue to write such engaging books, and that she will consider creating one about Aimee White and Rose Hall Plantation as it was.

When Kathryn Calder and Flynt Kincaid of New York City are transplanted to Jamaica, their attraction to the supernatural flavor of society they find that includes voodoo and native magic whets the appetite of the reader to learn more about its culture as well. Unexplained feelings of familiarity with Rose Hall and reocurring dreams that match its history baffle and terrify Kathryn. Flynt fears for his friend's safety as she is drawn to find out more about the scenes of these dreams and paintings depicting them. A computer expert on special assignment, Kathryn has always been a strictly level-headed career woman. Is stress getting to her or does she really have a former attachment from another time to the famous Rose Hall plantation with which she is obsessed that is now a tourist attraction. This is a page turning, hair-raising story that rivets the reader to the book until it it finished.

"Hearts Across Forever" by Mary Montague Sikes is one of those books you rarely run across. It's really a page turner. It includes an exciting romance, the right amount of the supernatural, mysterious happenings and strange religions that make this book well worth the read. The romance between two New York executives unfolds in Jamaica where the beautiful setting makes a fine backdrop for fascinating, and sometimes frightening, happenings. We hope Sikes writes many more books like this for us to read in the future.

Well Worth The Search

I went searching for Penelope's first 2 books, Beloved Rogue and this (at least they appear to be her first). Beloved Rogue was so-so (not a huge surprise considering I was comparing to her later stories) but I was amazed at the quantum leap her skill took from Rogue to Hearts Bequiled. Don't hesitate to pay a few extra dollars for this harder-to-find book, particularly if you have enjoyed PW's other stories. It never ceases to amaze me how one author can wring so much more depth & detail & emotion from the typical 350 pgs of a historical romance than do other authors. Penelope fills every page with something you can sink your teeth...and your heart...into.

Well-written, extremely engaging storyline (*yawn* and another 3AM bedtime), very likeable h\h and absolutely adorable supporting characters. This is just a wonderful love story and, as another reader mentioned, the uniqueness of pre-revolutionary France just adds to the enjoyment. I really did not want this story to end. Classic Penelope; believable, flawed but totally lovable, charming, memorable characters with integrity AND sex appeal.

Hard to find, but WORTH THE EFFORT!!!

This is an early book by Ms. Williamson, and I was lucky to find it at a used book store. What I love most about her books is that they are all so different - characters, plots, times and locations. This one takes place in France, just before the revolution. There's enough romance, intrigue, action, history, and great characters to keep the reader rivetted. Ms. Williamson is the best!!!

Since I loved PW's later novels, I searched for this book, and I'm glad that I did. It was a well written story with so much more depth than today's run of the mill romance novels. Gabrielle's struggle to keep her son safe was riveting, and when Max finally saves her , I nearly swooned.

There was magic the moment they met...She was a flame-haired beauty fleeing from those who would kidnap her young son, the duke's only heir. He was a brillant scientist-handsome, dynamic...and completely reckless in the presence of the spirited, independent young widow whose flashing eyes set his blood on fire. His searing kisses left her shaken, yet helpless to deny him-or her own desire.

But both were concealing dark and dangerous secrets-secrets that hinted at lies and betrayal...and threatened to destroy even the idyllic love that had bind them forever.

My mere review cannot do justice

to such a well written novel. I cannot find the words to express how beautifully this story unfolded on paper. It was so enjoyable from start to finish. You were enraptured by the love between Gabrielle and Max and you were captured by the endearing supporting cast.

Ms. Williamson had just the right blend of weaving a love story into such an interesting period in French history. The intimacy between the two main characters was far greater than anything I've ever read by her before. Usually, she tends to introduce a love scene and then leave things to the imagination. Not so in this book. The intimacy was constant and such a great part of the unveiling of their love and the glue to their relationship.

I would highly recommend finding this one and holding on to it.

Why is this book so difficult to find? Why hasn't it been re-printed? Who knows...

This book was extremely difficult to find for some time. I had a Russian translation of it.

The fact is that translations of this relatively unknown work by J. London, actually a novelization of a movie script by Charles Goddard, are in wide circulation, especially in Russia, where it has been one of a group of favourite books.

I myself have read it a several times, bot as a child, and as an adult. In that latter occasion I was reading more critically and it is my opinion that it has nothing less than "King Solomon's Mines" or other similar books, widely read by many... Romance, exotic location, colorful portraying of characters, magnificent villains, burning sun and glowing treasure, lovely seƱoritas, twists - all that in a shape of a gripping narrative in one of the best books by London I have ever read. Scholars specializing on the author's work may state that it is a lot different then other more popular of his works, but I don't think anyone could say that it's not top of its genre. You will enjoy it immensely!

EDITED: it was finally reprinted in 2003 by Kessinger Publishing Co

I read this book three times when I was young. It is the best adventure story I ever read. The beginning is boring a little, but further things happen so fast, so different, graphically, unlimited and smart. The plot isn't linear and unpredictable. There are love, pursuers, treasure hunting and intrigues.
