I live on James Island, where Clyde Bresee's autobiographical story takes place. I expected it to be so-so, but have of late been determined to read anything that comes my way about James Island, so...well, what a real surprise. Deftly written, evoking a sense of place and time and people that is still part of the underlying fabric of the place and culture. Highly recommended.

Clyde Bresee does a wonderful, colorful job in this memoir of coming of age on a plantation on South Carolina's James Island. The simplicity of life as a boy exploring nature mixed with complex feelings and observations of race unfold as dancing prose. As a regular visitor of nearby Folly Island, this books allows one to travel the sea island as if you are there.

This book offers a delightful walk through the south of the 1930's. The culture is penetrated through a child's uncluttered horizon. Coupled with a mature sifting of events this book offers wonderful insight into the healing, fragile and unique culture of Charleston. Wonderfully written, this book offers a charming notch of history.

Seasons of A Woman's Heart is a timely treasure in my reading. I love the warm variety of stories and devotional thoughts. Sometimes I read a page while I am waiting to "get on line". Lynn Morrissey has put together an uplifting and meaningful collection. It is indeed a blessing. It would make a lovely gift for a friend. My only suggestion is that some of the quotes at the top of each page be a little more complete in thought.

I am really enjoying this book!

This is a lovely book with many heartwarming stories as well as humorous tales. It is such a pretty book that looks beautiful on a coffee table. I like to sit with a cup of coffee and some chocolate on a quiet afternoon and savor the experiences of the different writers as they share their souls. This is the kind of book that you would want to give your mom, sister or friend for their birthday. It's a book that tells the recipient that they are special and they are worth lavishing. Good job, Lynn, when is your next book coming out?

This is the perfect book to give to a friend for any special (or ordinary) occassion. May God Bless you, Lynn Morrisey, as you continue to write, and gather the writing "gold" for more books!

Deborah Smith's books are addicting- you can't put them down! I have read several of her books, and the last two being Blue Willow & Silk and Stone. I loved them all, stayed up late reading these- I can't get enough of her characters. Silk and Stone like many of her novels gives us wonderful descriptions of the mountains, the small southern towns, you feel like you are there. Her characters are fantastic, and I love how she brings them through family histories, and childhood freindships to romance and soulmates. All involving many tragedies and triumphs that keep your heart pounding! Her perfect timing with poems and verses had me tearing up- especially the verse from the bible " her price is far above rubies". To me that sums up the beautiful love in this story. I will keep reading anything she writes! Get the book!!

A book too good to miss!

It has been a long time since I read a love story that so wrapped me up -- and also one I will recommend to my 16 year old daughter and to my 60 year old mother. Wonderful character development; excellent plot lines; nice historical touches; good dialog and just on and on . . .! Give it a try -- I just can't believe you will be disappointed. This was my first Deborah Smith book -- it won't be my last.

I have enjoyed every book by Deborah Smith. Her characters are never flat, never dull, always passionate. But I have found that in this book especially. Jake and Samantha are an amazing couple, one I would love to see in every romance. They go up against harsh realities that would strain any normal relationship, but nothing truly separates them. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to read a powerful romance.

This is a really fun book! It's great for someone who doesn't like to cook, like me, or for someone who loves to experiment with cooking, like my boyfriend. At the beginning, this cookbook sounded a bit exotic, but I was attracted to it's simplified receipes and it's cute notes. The use of the variety of spices and herbs gave me an opportunity to explore all sorts of ethnic supermarkets. Each receipe I've tried is so different and yummy. Last of all, this book just touched me because the author dedicated this book to his 'heart' donor.

Until I read this book I never knew how beautiful and interesting and deep the chinese character is. The stories and describtions just captivate you. The in depth design of every single character and the story behind it is very interesting and fascinating. Though not as long as I would have hoped, I reccomend it.

If you only have the time and patience to learn forty Chinese characters in your lifetime, you should learn the ones in this book. Concepts such as "spirit", "benevolence", "harmony", "loyalty", and "wisdom" characterize so much of traditional Chinese thought and culture. The authors illustrate each of these characters with beautiful brush and ink calligraphy on rice paper background. There is a short explanation accompanying each character telling why it is written just so. For example the strokes making up the character "love" show us that the word means "breathing into the heart with a gracious motion". The character "enlightenment" shows the two components "sun" and "moon" which together light the world. Students who wish to practise writing these characters can follow the useful stroke order guide next to the explanations. This is a beautiful gift for the student or scholar, or just for those who appreciate Chinese culture.

Split Verse is the finest collection of serious poetry I've seen in a long time. The layout of the book is clean and each section contains poetry on a different aspect of the subject, allowing the reader to choose what they'd like to see and the sequence. When reading a book on a topic that is none too happy, it's a pleasure to be able to move around the subject, yet still get the feeling of a unified theme at work. It's also especially exciting to see new work from New York writers like David Mark Speer, whose piece, "At Least Half the Man My Father Was," is probably the most heartfelt, wry and touching poem in the book. Overall, the editors did a great job and I can't wait to see what's next. If you're interested in serious literature about a sometimes tragic yet fully human topic, Split Verse is the book for you.

Often "theme" anthologies end up too small in their focus and their reach. While SPLIT VERSE certainly concentrates on divorce, the poems are true to any experience of loss, devastation or betrayal. William Duke's erotic masterpiece "The Best Sex" bites you with its final judgement. Nita Penfold's recurring narrator reminds you of a favorite wise aunt, long since recovered from a bad choice. These poets aren't bitter but one can tell they spent some time there. SPLIT VERSE will surprise you every time you open it. Enjoy!

Read the book right through. A wonderful assortment which covers the gamut, expected and unexpected. By turns, the poems are moving, sad, funny, moving--as many aspects of divorce as there are aspects of marriage--and life. I particularly liked the poems by both editors--obviously the perfect pair to choose the others. A collection one can trust for anyone who has survived the incredibly complex experience or simply wishes to understand it better.

Separation and divorce are things that touch everyone and need to be talked about. Whether you are a child of divorced parents, or simply suffering from a break-up, even if you are happy and in love these poems cover the full spectrum of emotions involved. Each section speaks to a particular place in your soul and yet inspires you to remember the strength of the whole. At once funny and clever, or wry and difficult, they are beautifully written and collected. You will be glad you picked it up.

Poor Stacey! Robert broke her heart. I liked how it showed that even though Stacey's heart is broken, she goes on with her life. I liked how supportive her mom was. It tells you that, no, not all romances are "happily ever after"...only a tiny percent of teen romances last a lifetime. I have the feeling Mary Anne and Logan are next in line for splitsville...just a gut feeling.

Stacey's Broken Heart is a great book. Robert, Stacey's boyfriend is acting odd, and disappearing often. Stacey doesn't know what's going on, but soon finds out. Robert is cheating on her! Stacey is shocked. So was I. In the other books, Robert seemed to be Stacey's boyfriend forever. Like Logan and Mary Anne. Meanwhile, Kristy in Hawaii vacationing, and Abby has taken over her role as BSC president. Abby thinks it's going to be easy and fun, but it isn't at all! The reviewer before mine said that this book is funny. It isn't funny at all. Not in the sense as of jealousy anyway. If you want to read what happens sometime after the break-up, read BSC #119 Stacey's Ex-boyfriend.

Outstanding Analysis of The Dangers of Statins

The best I have ever read about the side effects of Statin Drugs. Dr Graveline not only deals with the side effects. He also goes into the mode of action of the drugs and what happens on the cellular level. What cholesterol is and why it is so important to our well being. If fact too little cholesterol and we die.
The book is written so non-medical consumers can easily understand what he is talking about.
If you are taking a statin or a Doctor is trying to put you on a statin. THIS BOOK IS A MUST READ. It might just save your life or keep you from having severe debilitating side effects.
I have taken the book and put together a power-point presentation to present to the Rotary Club. Everyone needs to be made aware of the danger of statin drugs. No one presents this any better than Dr Graveline.

If you take statins now (or ever did) you NEED to read this book!

This book provides an insight into how our bodies deal with statins. It is written by a highly qualified medical doctor, who is known internationally for his work. He discusses the side-effects of statin medication from the unique viewpoint of examining the cases he has collected over time and placed into a respository of statin side-effects. He has used that information to guide his own researches into the unwanted effects that statins produce in the human body.

Dr Graveline focusses on the mechanisms that produce the side effects . This is the sort of information that ordinary people will not find very easy to discover. The internet may well supply readers with much of this information in some form, if one could be bothered to dig it up and then filter out all of the tales that mark out the information as personal. Dr Graveline has rendered a valuable service to all statin users, by writing this book. He deserves our thanks for unravelling the language that keeps all non-medically qualified people in the dark, when it comes to our health. This book ought to be in every medical practitioner's personal library, because it is a prime example of what can happen to patients when clinicians do not listen to what their patients are saying to them. This book is highly recommended, especially if you really do want to know more about which adverse effects may be caused by statins.

doctors prescribing statins SHOULD read this first

Review Date: 2008-08-22
Dr. Graveline is unfortunately one of the very few who has looked with superb detail into the side effects of statins, a class of drugs that is a true chain saw to the base of the trunk of one of our most important biochemical trees. In order to affect one important limb, the one making cholesterol, ALL other branches are similarly deprived of the same vital building blocks. It is here that Dr. Graveline has done marvellous work in pointing out some of these 'side' effects. Some branches will have fewer leaves [think: muscle strength], fewer fruits [think: cognitive effects] or fewer flowers [think: cancer in the elder].
It is sad if not plain dangerous that probably the vast majority of the doctors who prescribe these drugs do so without the fundamental knowledge that this book and other Graveline work provides. Statins affect every system in the body and doctors and patients should be aware of these effects, some of which are certain, some rare but all are real.

Useful Information About Hidden Dangers

Review Date: 2008-08-18
This concise but comprehensive compendium not only lists the cornucopia of statin side effects, but also clearly explains the mechanisms of action responsible for their insidious side effects. Many of these dangerous complications, including cancer and neurodegenerative disorders that have been skillfully concealed or denied by statin manufacturers are just now beginning to surface. As Dr. Graveline emphasizes, in blocking cholesterol, which is essential for neuronal communication in the brain, statins also interfere with the synthesis of Coenzyme Q10, dolichols and NF-kB (nuclear factor kappa B), vital nutrients crucial for energy production, neuropeptide synthesis and proper immune system function. He also discusses the important role of homocysteine in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis and the fallacies of current dogma that perpetuates the high fat diet high cholesterol heart attack myths. Equally valuable is a chapter devoted to statin alternatives that are certainly much safer and can be more effective for many, especially senior citizens and women of any age. The author, who is a physician with impressive credentials, became interested in this subject after suffering two episodes of global amnesia. His previous book, Lipitor, Thief of Memory, details this and similar memory problems experienced by many others. Since then, he has established a web site www.spacedoc.net that now includes reports of over 7,000 patients who have experienced documented statin side effect. As also emphasized, statins have been the best selling drugs ever for several years. This meaty book should be required reading for the many millions of patients that take them and the hundreds of thousands of physicians who prescribe them.

Cholesterol Truth Means No Statin Drugs
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2008-08-01
This book focuses on the side-effects of statin drugs used "to lower cholesterol" or LDL-cholesterol. Its author has been an astronaut, aerospace medical research scientist, flight surgeon, family physician for at least 10 years, writer (including novels), and holder of a Masters degree in Public Health (MPH). Still, he enjoys being known as "Spacedoc". But what makes him super-qualified as author of Statin Drug Side Effects (SDSE) is that he has experienced two episodes of transient global amnesia himself after taking Lipitor(tm).

This side-effect, shocking in its implications for drivers, pilots, etc., was temporary for Spacedoc, but not for everyone, as he reports on hundreds of cases. He also wrote that there are thousands of cases of less severe mental impairments due to Lipitor, and the equally dangerous statin drugs Zocor, Mevacor, Crestor and Baycol (now withdrawn). These and the less dangerous Pravachol and Lescol had been well-known for causing muscle pain, muscle weakness, muscle decomposition leading to kidney failure, peripheral neuropathy, digestive problems, chronic fatigue, sexual dysfunction, headache and skin rash. There are warnings that pregnant women or those are breast feeding should not take any statins. Most people accepted (or were not told) about these common side effects. And now Spacedoc exposes mental problems, heart failure and increased cancer rates! He spells out the biochemical pathways for these side effects. He gives case descriptions of many of the amnesia cases, including his own episodes.

Spacedoc's experience as a novelist helped to make his book very readable. The first 112 pages are less technical than the final 44 pages of addendum, which include more detailed biochemical pathways for the brain damage, immune system damage, and heart damage from statin drugs. A final 10 pages is a brief summary of the whole. For busy physicians, these 44 pages alone are worth the price of the book. SDSE is carefully referenced, mostly to medical journals, with numbered citations (the best way). There is no index. While I disagree with a half dozen narrow aspects of the work, Spacedoc's credentials are far better than mine, and the main messages are solid. His tone is very civil, even in lamenting the baseless demonization of cholesterol. Other authors have referred to this as a fraud, myth, conspiracy and con. Spacedoc gives example after example of how common and necessary cholesterol, including LDL-cholesterol, really is in your body.

Spacedoc has explained that the whole dogma of lowering cholesterol or LDL-cholesterol has no scientific basis, despite $billions of TV advertising and medical claims based on clinical trials. Flaws in trial design and reporting are explained very well. Spacedoc has shown that the low-fat diets promoted by the avaricious or ignorant for 50 years have failed, as you can see from the number of fat people around you. Diets that will reverse obesity and type 2 diabetes are given. Spacedoc had anticipated the more recent book on diets: "Good Calories Bad Calories" by Gary Taubes.

Is Spacedoc a zealot or nearly alone? Not a chance, since at least 30 books have appeared in the last 10 years in agreement, all solidly accurate and well-referenced. About 70 cholesterol skeptics and their publications may be found at .

I recommend this book especially for physicians, physician assistants, nurses, pharmacists, as well as FDA and USDA employees. Big Pharma detail women (or men) might want to read it in secret. Many of the rest of you will find SDSE to be a personally useful revelation that will restore health in later life for you or a relative or friend. Or a window showing the dark world of over promoted prescription drugs.

I loved this book! Once I started I couldn't put it down. This is definitely an author to watch. The complex plot and character interaction kept me going and going. I can't wait for her next book.

A person's word is cannot compare to stone truth. "Stonewiser: The Heart of the Stone" is a novel about Sariah, the leading stonewiser of her time. She seeks the truth of the world through her art of reading stories from the stones, but finding the truth is not without its perils, and she is forced to bind her fate with that of a rebel leader in order to save her dying world. "Stonewiser" is a finely crafted fantasy with unique concepts, and a vivid living world that will draw readers in and not let go.

I must confess that I seldom read fantasy. However, I just finished reading Stonewiser: The Heart of the Stone and was very impressed by Ms. Machado's creativity. I liked the language she used, strong, crisp, smart. The story parallels our world and I could relate to it in many ways. The characters are engaging. I really liked the way the heroine, Sariah, is strong and sexy but still able to show her emotions and learn from her actions. Ms. Machado shows us that you can write a smart book that is intelligent, action-packed and romantic at the same time. Good for her!

I started to read this book and was trapped in a different world full of surprises and adventure. I forgot about my routine and my stress. I felt connected to Sariah, to her struggles as both heroine and woman. I was mesmerized by her quest to find justice for others and for herself. Using a fictional world, Dora Machado shows the difficulties of finding a path as a woman, combined with the glory of that journey. I didn't want the book to end.

A collection of heartwarming stories that honors mothers of all ages can be found in "The Story Jar." Top inspirational writers Robin Lee Hatcher, Deborah Bedford and Angela Elwell Hunt team up to produce a continuity story about an ordinary jar that holds an extraordinary power to encourage and heal the heart. The story jar was placed on the alter of a small country church each Mother's Day, and the mothers of the church would each contribute some small memento that has meant something to them during the previous year. Those mementos are the basis for a tale that weaves through several generations of women, and how they drew strength and encouragement from the lessons learned. Also included in "The Story Jar" are tributes from some of the country's top inspirational writers to their mothers including Lori Copeland, Linda Windsor and Jerry Jenkins. This book will inspire women everywhere to rejoice in the gift of children, and after all, this is the reason behind Mother's Day! Now, go get your mom a present!

As a young woman is cleaning a church, the pastor's widow arrives for a last look around. They find a jar filled with little trinkets from previous church members. The widow explained the jar was "a story jar" and that each item had a special story behind it. Thus three stories emerge about some of the items.

*** A special book just in time for Mother's Day! In between each novella are poems and short true tales from various other people. Many of them are author names I recognize. However, several are not. I saw some poems from children about their mothers. It was so special and gave me such a warm feeling. The stories are inspirational. I found myself near tears of sadness at times, joy at others, and a few times a feeling of awe and wonder that only another mother could understand. Fabulous! ***

For all who are or would like to be mothers . . .

This book isn't just for Mother's Day--if you are a mother, have a mother, or would like to BE a mother, this book is for you. The three authors have given us such different stories--they cover all aspects of motherhood, including the desperate wanting to be a mother an infertile woman feels. A lovely book that's as honest as anything I've read lately. There are no easy answers, but God is faithful. I highly recommend!
