Soar Too, With An Angel.Review Date: 2003-06-20
Whatever loss or tragedy may have befallen you, I hope you'll find a quiet, comfortable spot to read this honest and compelling personal odyssey. Ms. Winter is not some pontificating PhD, but a fellow human who managed to rise above the pit of overwhelming despair. As you read her magnificently written daily entries, and perfectly selected quotes, you realize you are not alone. You begin to comprehend a bigger picture. And you draw comfort and strength from her own healing.
Please give this book to a loved one or friend who is struggling with personal loss. And if that person is you, come share the light at the end of the tunnel with Aurora Winter.

Well-written, inspiring, helpful and entertainingReview Date: 2008-09-13
After each interpretation, the author presents a possible scenario from the reader's life, based upon scenarios most people do in fact face from time to time, and then suggests how this particular name might be of use in getting through this scenario. Finally, he presents a meditation (sometimes two) on each name, some classic Sufi meditations but others more contemporary. Some meditations are designed for walking, which I find very useful.
Finally, there is a brief biographical sketch of each person cited in the book, and contact information for many Sufi organizations.
This book will help anyone interested in exploring Sufi mysticism, mysticism in general, or anyone who just wants to learn new meditative techniques. In the process, you'll read some very insightful and entertaining texts from across the centuries.

A Life Saving Good ReadReview Date: 2003-02-16
Basics of anatomy and physiology are given in an interesting way, along with numerous facts related to health and wellness. Quotes from literary and historical sources, along with numerous personal stories by the authors and other survivors and caretakers, bring the hard facts home. As a family and health psychologist and a nurse practitioner, I was pleased to see the integration of the psychological and family aspects of cardiac health. Seligman's work on the importance of optimism is cited, along with very good guidelines related to family members taking care of themselves and the myriad of emotions that are likely to get triggered along the way. This is a user-friendly book that can be read cover to cover or as a reference book, depending upon the readiness and current need of the reader. Both survivor's and caretakers are likely to resonate with Surviving with Heart in terms of being understood and that others have walked their journey.
Very practical suggestions are provided related to sex, exercise, nutrition, stress management and shifting to a heart healthy lifestyle. Since heart disease often presents differently in women, a section is devoted to this area. I have recommended this book to psychology, nursing, and physician colleagues as well as to clients and friends. For healthcare providers who enjoy partnering with their patients in their care, this is a book well worth recommending.

Teacher TalkReview Date: 2007-12-05
Some examples of the topics discussed are--dealing with the parents who want to know what, where, when, and how you teach, the child who performs below grade level, parent conferencing, the child caught cheating, the parents who are too involved, and much much more. This book covers all aspects of teacher responsibilities starting with open house in September to communicating with yourself in June. Teacher Talk made me realize that communicating with my students is only a very small portion of my duty as a teacher. Parents are essential. If I can communicate and gain the parents support, I will reach my goal of becoming a very inspiring teacher.
The most beneficial portions of this book, in my opinion, were the suggestions revealing how to deal and communicate with parents effectively. Teacher Talk explicitly addresses many real life scenarios. Following these scenarios are suggestions and guidelines that can be used to overcome many obstacles. Most parents go to the extreme to see their kids succeed and we as teachers must be fully prepared to handle any of their concerns.
Another useful aspect of Teacher Talk is the countless amounts of already made worksheets located at the back of the book. These worksheets are helpful on the organizational side of things. Some examples of the worksheets are open house sign in form, transportation form, parent/teacher phone log, day of conference check-list, parent communication survey, and many more. These pre-made worksheets are a great help to anyone who is interested in teaching.
I suggest Teacher Talk for anyone who is pursuing a career in education. There is no such thing as a perfect teacher, so why not try to advance your skills with opening yourself up to new ideas?

RESTORING THE HEART OF THE CHRISTIAN MAN...Review Date: 2003-11-26
his approach to restoring the masculine soul to its
rightful place in the Christian Church and daily life.
His insights can change your whole perspective on what
"Christian" and "man" and "male" can mean in the context
of the heroic qualities of Jesus Christ and living for
Him in very wise and practical ways.
I cannot recommend these books enough. John Eldredge has
done a great service to both men and women in defining
masculine
leadership in a very biblical and necessary manner
as over against the modern-day version of wimpy
(almost passive)
men and overly aggressive women that tends
to leave both genders into places of confusion, strife, and
misery. Here's
the antidote.

Some folks just don't understand...Review Date: 2004-04-15
These books are wonderful! The Sacred Romance really is moving, especially for those (like me) who grew up partially raised under the subtly unexpressed (but nonetheless present) viewpoint that God did not create the imagination but that it was something that only showed up in mankind after the Fall of Adam & Eve. This book shows that idea up for the religious woodfluff that it is. Not only did God create us as imaginative creatures, He made the imagination a vital part of His image in us!
The Journey of Desire was equally good (if not better), showing that the Pharisee is still alive and well in the (visible) Body of Christ today, and still deserving of the same judgement Jesus handed down in Matthew 23:4. "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites, for you tie up heavy burdens and load men down with them, nearly breaking their backs, while you yourselves lift not even a finger to help them." Desire, contrary to what twisted versions of Puritanism have taught, can be a good thing if it is submitted to the lordship of Jesus first. (And no, that does not mean suppressing every desire we have.)
Wild at Heart was good as well, showing that living from the heart (the new heart God promises in Ezekiel, that is) will lead a man not only to Christlikeness, but freedom to be who God made him to be, as well.
Bottom line?
Eldredge's books are part (I might almost say a central part) of a ministry to WOUNDED people first. Those Christians who have already been healed of their emotional wounds (fortunate few) will undoubtedly react differently to his books than those who have been beat up by life in a fallen world and are unafraid/unashamed to admit it. Remember what Jesus said? "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick." (Matthew 9:12) If you're not emotionally sick or wounded, you don't need this man's works. If you are, they're indispensable!
