Highly recommend this to both hunters and non-hunters. Richard Nelson did a great job in capturing the evolution of deer and people interactions in America. An enjoyable book!

This book is the most thorough, most comprehensive, most graceful study of deer I have ever encountered. It deals with everything from the natural history of deer to the animal rights movement to different approaches to hunting and management. There's even a section that deals with the ways in which the film "Bambi" inextricably has altered Americans' views about deer. Nelson is honest about his own biases and convictions; he tells us that he is a hunter and that he believes in a strict ethical code with regard to his own hunting, a belief he learned while working as a cultural anthropologist with the Koyukon Indians in northern Alaska. Despite his strong beliefs, he is remarkably even-handed when dealing with the many controversial issues surrounding wildlife management in America today. I understand much better now why animal rights activists and wilderness preservationists do not always make comfortable allies. I trust this author; he has integrity. I loved "The Island Within" for capturing the mist-ridden world of an island off the coast of the Pacific Northwest, and I loved this book every bit as much. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in deer, hunting, and the animal rights and environmental movements. It is balanced, fair, and majestic.

WORTH EVERY BUCK! I DEFY YOU TO DISLIKE THIS BOOK!

As a National Park Service Ranger and animal lover I've personally and professionally struggled with the issues surrounding deer management -- Bullets or starvation, which is more humane? Deer abundance or ecosystem biodiversity? Etc. etc. I've also read a great deal of literature spanning the entire HEART and BLOOD spectrum. This is the most accurate, fair, and comprehensive treatment on deer management I've ever seen.

Richard Nelson is the epitome of the professional anthropologist. He walks with as much confidence in the scientific and statistical world of biology/wildlife mgmt. as he does in the socio-political world of mass media, voters, and taxpayers.

The veteran scientist will regard the imagery in a few of his more vivid passages as "filler". These readers should be reminded that if the management of deer wasn't an emotional issue there would be far fewer researchers employed in such capacity. Hopefully they also realize that when Nelson describes tracking a food stressed doe in winter with "...at last I found her at the end of her tracks like a pencil resting in mid sentence," he didn't choose those words to impress an English teacher but to describe to the layperson exactly what it is like to pursue a starving animal.

On the other extreme the animal rights activist may try to skip over all of Nelson's nuances regarding deer behavior, physiology, and biochemistry. However, Nelson goes to great lengths to interject such information at a gentle rate and in very accessible terms.

With sincere unbiased reporting he describes opposing positions on classic bipolar debates. Then with his own arguments Nelson blurs the dividing line so thoroughly that animal rights activist will find themselves whispering "I can see how a hunter could be an animal lover too." and wildlife managers will end up muttering "I suppose individual animal welfare is worth the millions being spent on finding viable management alternatives to the bullet."

To say that this book has something for everybody would not only be cliche, it would be inaccurate. This book has everything for everybody. If you don't believe me, get a degree in Wildlife Management. Spend hundreds of hours tracking deer, thousands of hours pouring over scores of boring scientific research papers, EISs, lawsuits, and "blood-thirsty" calls-to-arms by animal rights organizations.

Or save yourself a few thousand dollars tuition and buy and enjoy reading this book. Allow Nelson who has already done the "BLOOD" work to take you directly to the "HEART" of the dilemma in a mere 400 pages.

Great review and perspective of deer in America.

Seriously, and I've met few non-fiction books that I can say that about. I'm not a hunter but I found this book quite engaging. Hunting is only one focus of the book. There is great appeal for readers interested in wilderness and conservation issues in the U.S. Remarkably detailed, intelligent, and colorful examination of deer across the U.S.; Alaska, Texas, Wisconsin, California, New York, etc. Very well-written; not a word is wasted and the whole is beautifully composed.

Heart of Scars, the sequel to When the Autumn Moon is Bright, is rougher, harder, tougher than the first book, but well worth the wait. Easton takes Sylvester Logan James on a journey that delves into bloodlust bordering on aberrant sexual behavior, yet the entire while never manages to lose the reader's empathy for Logan. This is a masterful story, told with the artful hand of a master storyteller. I was captured at the first page and finished the book in a short amount of time - when is someone going to take both of these books and make them into the screenplays they so richly deserve?

A Different Book from the First---But No Less Fascinating

Easton's first book in this series, When the Autumn Moon Is Bright, told the story of how Sylvester Logan became an orphan and evolved into a fanatical werewolf hunter. This second book chronicles his descent into the bottom of a horrific well of his own hatred, where he transforms into a human monster even more fearsome--and no less depraved--than the beasts that he hunts. Although he becomes possessed by a Wendigo's spirit, the reader infers that Logan's psycho/physical deterioration and monstrous bloodlust are more the result of his own personal demons than the sole fault of the Wendigo.

This book introduces some really interesting new characters. This second work also has a different flavor than the first book; it reads more like a James Bond spy adventure, with some dabbling in arcane black magic. But Heart of Scars is no less convincingly well-written than Autumn Moon, and no less capable of suspending the reader's disbelief, despite its greater emphasis on the metaphysical angle. And I love how the author dissects human psychology without getting boringly clinical. The remarkable thing about the book is that the reader comes to feel genuine sympathy for Logan, even though he's not a very likable person much of the time.

Heart of Scars takes some shocking turns as it resolves the mystery about what really happened to Logan's parents and reveals the true cause of the deaths of Logan's wife and son. I won't give away the ending, other than to say it is surprising.

As with the first book in the series 'When the Autumn Moon is Bright', Mr. Easton's detailed descriptions of every time, place, and bloody action, bring this story to life page after page. Part horror, detective novel, and international political thriller, this second installment is written with the same intensity and eye for detail as the first. Taking up where the last one left off, we are taken on a journey from the protagonists home in Canada, to the Isle of Man, with many stops in between. J.D. Salinger indicated that one of the most important themes in literature is man's inhumanity to his fellow man. This theme is constantly rearing it's ugly head throughout the course of this novel. Working in conjunction with this theme is another equally as powerful, a man becoming that which he hates the most. Logan becomes more and more inhumane as he is slowly taken over by the ancient evil known as Wendigo. His inhumanity is not restricted to dealing with his enemies. Most notable is his lashing out at Michael Winterfox, the only true constant he has had in his life. By allowing the Wendigo to corrupt his soul, and by using it as a weapon, his inhumanity begins to rival that of his mortal enemy. Will Logan ultimately find redemption? I guess we will have to wait to find out. With this second novel, Mr. Easton shows us that he has staying power and keeps us wanting for more.

Waiting for book 3....

One of the most descriptive tomes of brutality that I've come across. Sylvester James Logan might just be the hardest of the hard as far as anti-heroes goes. I couldn't wait to see how he would tackle a dreadful situation, even though I knew his actions might turn my stomach. Easton does a great job of surrounding you with horror and bringing you into the page as Logan delves deeper into the dark side of humanity. Logan keeps you in awe of his sheer will and brutality... And did I mention there were Werewolves. Easton amazes me with the ability to make the unbelievable sound just creepy enough to make you look over your shoulder... just to make sure. I can't wait for the next book in the series.

Just like his last book, Brian Easton has out done himself once again. It was well worth the wait for him to crank out the second book. Mr. Eastons' storytelling keeps you on the edge of your seat, like a kid listening to a tall tale around a campfire. I personally am not one to read a book quickly, but I couldn't help to devote as much of my spare time as possible to this, dare I say, master piece of fiction. Mr. Easton goes out of his way to not only tell a fantastic story, but to paint vivid image after image. He turns the pages into a spectacle of color and sound, and a tantalizing, buffet for the imagination. The forward alone was vivid and horrifying enough to make your mouth water for more gut wrenching, brutality. And not to worry dear reader, there is more than you can shake a silver bladed bowie knife at. Logan's sometimes unpredictable behavior keeps you on a roller coaster of emotion. One minute you are horrified at what he is actually capable of doing, as he flicks the little angel off his shoulder and scoots in closer for what the devil has to say, while the next minute you're rooting him on to serve up his derranged brand of justice to those that seem to hunger for it the most. Mr. Easton has turned Logan into a seemingly unstoppable force of supernatural proportions, and a whirlwind of violence and shame. I would suggest a graphic novel, but we really don't need one. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll empathize, and you'll judge, but the one thing you wont do is put this sucker down for very long. Go Logan and go Mr. Easton! Thank you for taking the time to produce something special and worthwhile for the reader. And I can't wait for the movie either, although it would never be as good.

This story was sooo good! It centers around Aaron (a Native American) and Samantha (Sam) who grew up together. They are young and look forward to a bright future together until Sam does the unthinkable. Finding herself pregnant and not wanting it to interfere with upcoming schooling, she goes in for an abortion without telling Aaron first. Aaron says some harsh words when she tells him (as you can imagine) and Sam leaves for medschool. The next 12 years, for each of them, is dealing with Sam's decision (separately). Aaron becomes a pastor and Sam becomes a Dr. but still has lots of emotional scars because of the abortion. Her dad, who runs the reservation she grew up on, asks her to come home and be the clinic Dr. She agrees thinking that Aaron wouldn't be there. The book is the story of their journey through the pain. Will Aaron be able to forgive Sam for her decision? Can Sam forgive herself? Can Aaron continue to be a pastor while harboring the bitterness in his heart? Will God be enough to carry them through the pain yet to come?

I highly recommend this story. Aaron and Sam come alive from the pages. It was very realistic and heart breaking and yet so hopeful as well.

Mia did a fabulous work with "Heart of Stone". Don't miss this wonderful work! I look forward to her next book.

This was the best Inspirational novel I've read in a very long time. To the point, emotionally gut wrenching but not too heavy, realistic and never dull, this book told it like it is. As a man who has gone through this type of situation, I have to say, the author hit the nail on the head. She captures the man's perspective, as well as the woman's and I don't think I've ever seen a writer do that before, especially with such an incindiary topic. I'm not ashamed to say I filched this book off my wife's dresser and read it twice. Buy it, read it, recommend it to every Christian you know, you won't regret it.

I read this book cover to cover in the course of two days, I could not put it down!! I've read other Christian fiction books that sort of skirt the issue of abortion and what follows but I never read anything this powerful - or truthful - before. I think the author has done a great job presenting the realities of abortion and its aftermath. This book gives a voice to those in pain for the choice they made. It also shows Christians everywhere the necessity of forgiveness in the healing process and the blessings that follow when we walk in God's will, not our own. Kudos to Ms. Vanduran, this is a fantastic book!

'The Guardian Heart Crystal Series' has just begun, Amy Blankenship's first installment 'The Heart of Time' is a wonderfully written love story based in fantasy. The characters and plot are very original and captivating, when I received my copy I found I was unable to put it down till I read the entire story in one evening. If this first book is any indication of what we can expect in the future from this talented new author to hit the fantasy scene then I believe we are in for some real entertainment! I would recommend this story to anyone who has an interest in stories based in fantasy.

Hi, my son (18 yo) found this author & offered it to me. At first I was like, what is this? A picture book? How childish, then I began to read & become captivated by her tale. It is a wonderful adventure and the artwork insert makes the story come alive by giving the reader a visual of the characters that you normally don't get in a novel.

My son has recently purchased the next novel in this series & I am patiently waiting for him to finish! I would recommend this series to anyone who enjoys fantasy adventures.

A bit too heavy on the "God" reference for me - I find my spirituality in nature and our mother earth. The passages are not poetic at all - they're declarations like the subtitle states - e.g. I will do X, I will do Y. The short quotes and titles to the passages are more inspiring & thought provoking than the passages themselves.

Like another book that I reviewed by this author (Blessings: Prayers and Declarations for a Heartful Life) this book provides life affirming reflections written by the author. These reflections are religious in nature but are non sectarian, i.e., they are appropriate for all faiths: Christians, Jews, Moslems, etc. When you need spiritual reflections to help you connect with God, this peaceful book fills the bill. When you need thoughts to reaffirm your worth in the scheme of things, this book is for you. I recommend it.

A bus pass
A postcard
A German grammar book
A potted plant
A packet of seeds
A page from a songbook
A record
An empty plastic box
A package of condoms
A wadded-up sheet
A frayed American flag
A black notebook
A wrapped package with a curly ribbon
A movie ticket
A razor blade and a bottle of blue pills

What could a sixteen-year-old Swedish boy have to do with all those objects? You'd be surprised.
This book is told by a teenage boy. Is he a boy? He has loved before, but he has yet to get his license or experience the "real world". He goes nameless throughout the entire story, which adds to the constant question of manhood or childhood. And what does a movie ticket and a wrapped package with a curly ribbon have to do with it?
The book starts with him spending a night alone, reviewing the past year in his mind as a movie starring himself and a girl. The girl. Like most teenage boys, he has fallen in love. She, however, was not in love.
The novel focuses on this boy and the objects that still connect him to his past lover. He feels a burning desire to rid himself of those memories. What to do with the bus pass? The record? The sheet?
This book will keep you up at night. You'll be wide awake at 3 a.m., gnawing at your fingernails. Why did he have to destroy the that? Why did he need to get rid of it? Every obstacle this boy goes through will have an impact on your entire day. Why? Why won't he listen? Why won't he move?! WAKE UP!

This is one book that I could read over and over. I read Heart's Delight in one day, and loved it so much. This is actually a book that was translated from sweedish, into English.

The main character in this book is about 17, and is heartbroken by his true love, for which he calls "Heart's Delight". A mysterious redhead, who he sees every week on the city bus to school. Eventually, they get to know eachother, and fall in love. Later, the book talks about teenage sex, and how beautiful it was for him the first time, with heart's delight.

It's later in the book that you find out what happens, which drives the boy to commit suicide. The only one who can save his life is Heart's Delight, also known as Ann-Katrin.

This book is writen beautifuly, you should definently read it.

Heart's delight is the name of a plant. It's also called Lemon Balm, and it gives off a faint hint of-- you guessed it-- lemon. It is also the nickname the young man in this book gives to the girl who he thinks is the love of his life. Ever since the young man first saw her he has been in love, but now he only wants to get her out of his mind. To do this, however, he must first destroy every bit of her she has left in his life.
"Heart's Delight" is a story about love and falling out of love. I recommend this book to anyone who needs to feel really sad. This is not the sort of book that will leave you satisfied with the world.

Statins are toxic and unsafe at "effective" doses. Once the truth comes out, the pharmaceutical industry will collapse and will likely take us M.D.'s down with them. Can't say we don't have it coming, though.

In practical terms, it is difficult to get the word out. The propaganda on statins is pervasive, and any time you tell a patient the truth, they look at you like you just told them the earth was flat. The other docs in the community may start thinking you're a crackpot as well, and perhaps stop referring patients your way.

Cholesterol is a great moneymaker for primary docs. Periodically, patients come in to get checked, get a prescription for Lipitor, and from then on every 3-6 months will require LFT's to check liver and recheck cholesterol. Between then, the patients will come in to be evaluated for side effects (GERD, memory loss, myalgia, etc). Anyway, good book.

Useful information not readily avilable elsewhere.

Shane Ellison is an experienced pharmaceutical chemist who has broken ranks with the "standard march to the drumbeat" group to share his knowlege of helpful alternatives which he feels will work just as well, if not often better, than standard prescription products. In so doing, he feels there is also greater savings and less chance of experiencing dangerous side effects. The reader is then left to weigh the information, share concerns with their health care professional and move forward from there, armed with additional information enabling one to make more confident decisions. Definitely a highly interesting read!

I purchased this book not knowing much more than about the title. Book arrived in timely manner. Content of book was wonderful and informative. Combined with two other books I purchased of similar material, this book helped me understand the truth regarding statins in a way I certainly had not before.

This is an excellent translation. Modern language, while not as poetic as The King James version, makes understanding the meaning much easier.

Disregarding the odd comments below, this translation is highly recommended for the serious Bible reader. Easy to to understand, modern language and spells out God's wonderful promises plainly. What's not to like? Buy and enjoy! God's blessings await the seeker.....

I find that reading different translations of the Bible helps to keep it "fresh" for me and give me new insights. This NLT is one of my favorite translations for regular reading because it flows so smoothly and I discover new meanings and nuances that I did not realize in reading other versions. The "contemporary" language (things like weights, measures, time, etc.) gives it a modern immediacy that helps me to integrate it into my everyday experience in the secular world.

Several of us at my church use the NLT - and I've noticed that whenever someone reads an NLT aloud in adult Bible class, it seems like at least one other person in the room comments on what a good rendering that was, and asks "what translation is that?"

This book by Drs' Enas and Kannan is a superb effort at highlighting the silent epidemic affecting south asians. It does yeoman service by drawing attention not only to factors that affect this population but provides information and resources which help laymen and physicians alike understand the disease process. It goes a step further than traditional books by devoting half the volume to educate readers on prevention of heart disease. The format and not just the content makes the book a pleasure to read. Once I picked it up I just had to race through it at one sitting. However, since then I have gone back to the book on numerous occasions only to be impressed by the amount of information that it provides.
This book is a must have for all, physicians and lay people alike, not just those from south asia.

Dr. Enas has compiled his enormous knowledge and expertise, based on his extensive clinical background and research on heart disease during last three decades, into a single book. It convinces, even the skeptics, the deeply troubling, at the same time not very well understood problem of the twin epidemics of heart disease and diabetes among the people worldwide and particularly among the South Asian population. It discusses with great clarity as to why South Asians should be tested and treated differently. This excellent book by an very well known cardiologist in the field of heart disease among the South Asians, written in a easily understandable language, is a must read for all South Asians in diaspora as well as in their native land.

Very informational book-ideal for medical and non-medical audience. Details on research and the statistics adds to the value of the book. Wish there was a workbook for people to keep a track of their life style changes and the benefits. Loved the recipes and nutritional information. Highly recommend it to South Asians in America and also in their native countries.

Excellent Practical book on Heart disease

Post heart attack I bought or borrowed numerous books on heart disease. This book has information that is scattered over many sources and so is a nice addition to the literature on heart disease and would be very valuable to anybody who wants to understand their disease and manage it or try to avoid getting it. It does a good job of explaining the current understanding of heart disease development, and several practical steps one can take to avoid getting the disease or manage it if one has it. While one focus of the book is the much higher than normal incidence of heart disease in South Asians in reality it is an excellent read for just about anybody. It does a very nice job of summarizing a great deal of research and highlights the Indian specific risk factors and appropriate medical responses. Much of the data is backed up by references to the medical literature that one can consult if one so desires (so much of the book is evidence based rather than anecdotal in nature). As an example of the obscure data that is hard to find but is included in the book is a quantification of expected benefit from several lifestyle & theraputic changes likes loosing weight or lowering LDL or quitting smoking etc.

As a hunter I've always marveled at how joy and sadness can dwell in the same moment, that moment when you reach out - with gun or bow or spear - and take the life of a wild creature. But there are many hunters who don't notice or care, and who treat this most awesome and mysterious thing as a sport like golf or car racing. The best part of "A Hunter's Heart" was spending time, so to speak, with others who see more and deeper things in hunting, and who can express it more vividly and truthfully than I have been able to. Each story is beautiful and eloquent and impactful in its own way. I reread the book often, enjoying it more each time, which is the best compliment I can give.

As a woman, and one who does not hunt, I found the essays in A Hunter's Heart intelligent, thought-provoking, and often moving. They suggest a complexity and ethic which underlie a sport often seen as cruel and mindless. They make a convincing case that those who hunt are more likely to respect nature than are those who buy their meat neatly packaged in plastic. The writers voice a genuine regard, even love, for the environment and for their prey. The authors may be more articulate and philospohical than those many of us think of as "typical" hunters, but if we admit that one may subscribe to an ethic without being able to articulate it, may live out a philosophy rather than expound it, the essays may make us rethink the motives and morality of those who take to the woods during hunting season.

Excellent!

This is an excellent collection of essays. The essays are honest, forthcoming, and thoughtful. I enjoy hunting not as a "sport" but as an activity that simply transcends sport. I love the environment, and perhaps this is why hunting is not merely sport to me. This work by Mr. Petersen is rare because it reflects the fact that many hunters do, in fact, love the environment and wildlife more than they love the hunt.

A few of the hunter-authors featured in Mr. Petersen's work don't hunt anymore, because they (like many sportsmen and sportswomen) have reached the "limiting out" phase of hunting, when a hunter no longer cares so much about bagging game, but cares mostly about the teaching of ethics and conservation to a younger generation of hunters. But when you read their essays, you can feel how much they loved the hunt and how much hunting taught them about the need for healthy ecosystems. On the other hand, some of these essays were written by active hunters. If you are a hunter, these essays will make your heart swell with anticipation for your next hunt.

Contrary to the review posted earlier by Mr. Seshadri, this book directly confronts irresponsible hunters. Admittedly, a few hunters do not love the environment and wildlife. Several of the essays confront unethical hunting practices head-on, including the use of overwhelming modern technology in the pursuit of trophy animals. Likewise, one essay condemns the use of live animals merely for target practice, undoutedly refering to the hunting of predators such as coyotes and wolves. Yes, this work is very honest. You get the good and the bad.

I am a 4th generation deer and elk hunter from the Rocky Mountains, and I think this book is a must-read for all hunters. My hope is that our wild lands, and our wild animals will be preserved for the enjoyment of future generations. We will need more conservation-minded hunters like Mr. Petersen if we are to be successful. Why? Because the golfers and couch potatoes don't care if another valley is buldozed for commercial developement. Habitat destruction is the threat to wildlife and wild land. The hunting community must stand up and make its voice heard, and this book is a good start.

A Spirited Defense Of The Hunter Ethic

I am not a hunter. I bought this book out of an intellectual curiousity of what it is that drives some people to kill and enjoy the pursuit of killing. The essays within - while plain spoken, well written and introspective - tend to be repetitive around some common themes:

1) It is no less ethical to hunt your own food than to buy meat in a supermarket
2) In nature, very few animals die of old age anyway
3) Humans are genetically programmed to hunt; hunters are just following their inner, atavistic calling
4) City folk who disdain any type of hunting are hypocritical and should pay a visit to their local slaughterhouse
5) Hunters actually love the animals they kill

I am compelled to agree with most of the above reasoning, although #5 is a tough act to follow. That said, where the essays fail is in their inability to confront the irresponsible hunters who kill just for the thrill of it. There is no mention of the moral deficiency of those "hunters" who kill not for the meat, but for the bragging rights of having shot a (mostly tame) lion or (farm raised) trophy ungulate. Likewise, the authors carefully avoid taking on the barbarism of "sports" like fox hunting. It's almost like these good hunters are ashamed of all those black sheep lurking within their fraternity, although not without good reason. All that said, this is nonetheless a good read that can be enjoyed by all thinking people - hunters and non-hunters alike.

This book is a collection of essays on hunting by some excellent outdoor writers, including former President Jimmy Carter. The writers talk about why they hunt. This book examines that question and finds that there are many reasons different people give to that same question. You may agree with some or disagree, but you'll definitely think long and hard about the answers given.

This book's thought provoking essays also force all of us to think about our own carnivorous instincts. Since almost all of us eat meat from the supermarket the book takes cows as an example and asks non hunters if the castration of bulls, the branding, the feeding of them in outdoor, closed in, excrement filled pens and the eventual slaughter of them is really somehow better than the hunter who shoots and kills a deer in the wild? It seems we all live with blood on our hands. But not to let you think this book is simply cut and pasted from the pages of American Hunter. The book also questions trophy hunting and whether hunting should even be considered a sport.

Since many hunters spend a good deal of time defending what they love to do, I would recommend that they pick up a copy of this book in order to be able to answer the question "why do I hunt?"
