I consider myself to be a well educated, caring person with a lot of common sense, however this book has been a real eye opener on human nature and how to nurture our children to grow to their greatest potential. I'm only on page 50 but I feel compelled to write a review already!

This is easy to read, well laid out and is packed with useful tips on how to help kids be their best selves. It's a real 'how to' guide, with lots of examples of actual situations & what to say to help your child overcome specific difficulties & be more successful. I like it so much I've ordered another copy to share with friends (gently & tactfully, of course!) Every parent should read this book - it's not about pushing your kids to achieve & driving them to prove what a great parent you are - this book is about nurturing their strengths & helping them believe in themselves & be more confident in who they are, just so they can be happy & enjoy life more.
Definitely worth the money & time spent reading it & putting it into practice. Does what it says on the cover!

This book is one of the gems -- a diamond in the rough -- on parenting. Written in simple language, it's the "basic course" on "HOW TO RAISE KIDS WITH SOLID CHARACTER, STRONG MINDS, AND CARING HEARTS". So read, use, and understand. Hmm. Understand? What do you do when the kids ask, "WHY?"! Hmm. You'll need a book that makes you understand -- in simple language -- the philosophy of WHY character counts, of right and wrong, of good and evil, of moral and immoral, and of ethical and unethical. The school that exists to teach the "advanced course" in "HOW TO RAISE KIDS WITH SOLID CHARACTER, STRONG, MINDS, AND CARING HEARTS" is West Point. The only book that explains the philosophy behind all the "WHYS" -- in simple language -- is the book titled "WEST POINT", by Norman Thomas Remick. It's THE companion book for all how-to books and "courses", basic or advanced, on parenting and character. It will become kind of an encyclopedia that you can refer to for explaining "WHY?" to your kids. And it will give Borba's diamond in the rough its required polish.

This was a particularly enjoyable read for me because I am a huge fan of both Rich Mullins and C.S. Lewis. I also have a disabled daughter, which helps me relate to the author. But I have passed this book on to several people who don't share those interests, and they all loved it! I look forward to reading it again as I think there is much to be learned here.
This is one the BEST books I've read.

I have ordered this book for Christmas gifts for at least 15 friends and family members.
I'm an avid reader (at least 1-2 books a week) and I usually forget about the books shortly after I've read them. This book is hard to forget. Weeks later I can still recall whole chapters. It has touched my life so much and I want to share it with as many people as possible. I highly recommend this book.

I read (and lived) this book a couple of days after the death of a dear friend while on a personal retreat. In a retreat setting much like Tim's in the story, I discovered that God had much more for me than the grieving for my friend who I know is enjoying her own Room of Marvels. Through laughter, tears and gentle nudges in my spirit, I came to a new understanding of what it means to live in the Kingdom of God, of the transition from time into eternity and the conversation between the two that begins in this life. Hope, grace, forgiveness, joy and a new sense of what it means to be a follower of Jesus emerged as I followed Tim's journey of reconciliation and understanding to hope and joy. James Bryan Smith's writing is exquisite and inviting. This book is not to be missed.

"Room of Marvels"
Author: James Bryan Smith
I received this book after church today and read in one seating! Not only could I not put in down, I couldn't stop crying -- overwhelmed by the reminder of God's love, overwhelmed by self-reflection, and overwhelmed by the journey through Heaven. This is a novel based on the death of the author's 3 closest people in his life. After struggling with grief and anger, Tim attends a 5 day silent retreat at a monestary which starts his inward journey to understanding his relationship with God. Tim has a dream to deal with love, forgiveness, masks, and control. Wait until you find out the concept of the "room of marvels" in Heaven. It is so awesome!!
I have one copy that needs to go into circulation but we need to get more. We have now bought a total of 16 books as gifts! That is how good this little book is! We hear that there is going to be a new release in the Fall with a new cover. Not sure if that is true or not!

Sabrina Monroe inherits her family's Maple Inn in Vermont, but has found the work difficult but rewarding in spite of her financial concerns. Her customers are interesting bunch of eccentric characters, but Lucinda of "sole" repairing takes the halo with her magical ability to fix dead cars and her leaving behind a book that she insists is a loaner aptly named SABRINA'S DESTINY.
Colonial Golf-Resort businessman Jason O'Neill wants to buy Sabrina's property to build a resort there. However, upon arrival she thinks he is a handyman in spite of his Mustang and puts him to work when he fails to correct her mistake as he figures he can find a way to bring the price down. Though he is under tooled and not handy at least with repairs, they fall in love healing their hearts and souls, but each has issues with an emotion neither trusts. Her former fiancý Rodney used her to further his career and covets her inheritance while he was hurt badly by his one so called lasting relationship Chloe. He knows he must tell her the truth, but fears her reaction.
SABRINA'S DESTINY is a terrific whimsical paranormal romance starring two wonderful skeptics struggling not to fall in love in spite of their mutual destiny. The support cast is an eccentric delightful group especially Lucinda the angelic matchmaker. Readers will enjoy this fine romantic fantasy and hope Lucy has more destinies in store for Selena Robins' appreciative fans.

Genre: Romance/Chick Lit
SABRINA'S DESTINY
AUTHOR: Selena Robins
Fans of the new sub-genre: "Chick Lit" will love this book. Romance, guardian angels and the battle of the sexes all make this, the perfect take along for the ladies.
Sabrina Monroe is an independent, stubborn and determined young woman who bears an unhealthy guilt over her parent's death. She is determined to repair and operate the family inn, but luck has not been on her side. Along comes the handsome, Jason O'Neill, "acquisition king", just what the doctor ordered. The impatient Sabrina mistakes him for the handyman and is soon enamored. Jason on the other hand has come to negotiate for his investment firm. They want to turn it into a golf resort and along with several unsavory towns people, they are determined to buy Maple Inn. Jason goes along with the mistaken identity and soon finds himself taken with Ms. Monroe. The plot thickens as the firm puts pressure on Jason to close the deal but his personal feelings are getting in the way. Sabrina is fighting her attraction to Jason, as the past comes back to haunt her. She has been hurt before and trust is not something that she gives willingly. Can these two opposites come to an agreement? Is romance possible or will the past get in the way? Who is this kooky pink haired character that keeps popping up?
Author, Selena Robins has captured the essence of the modern day romance in Sabrina's Destiny. The addition of the guardian angel Lucy, adds just enough fantasy to give the book a touch of mysticism without detracting from the plot. Interaction between the characters is believable and lifelike. Dialogue flows well from page to page.
Selena Robins lives in Ottawa, Ontario Canada with her husband David. She is presently working on a romantic comedy and intends to write a sequel to Sabrina's Destiny. Reviewer: Shirley Roe, Allbooks Reviews.

Sabrina's Destiny is a fun story that will make you smile, laugh out loud and will tug on your heartstrings. Sabrina and Jason are both injured souls needing to be healed. Through the help of a guardian angel with cotton candy pink hair and a magic snow globe, along with other heavenly beings and well-developed secondary characters, we are reminded that love is the ultimate healer. With a secondary romance and a satisfying ending, I am left waiting impatiently for more about these unforgettable characters.

I found it to be full of anectdotes and an honest retelling of a very rich and rewarding personal story. It is sure to please people of all ages and backgrounds.

This well written memoir is a must read. It is frank, funny and filled with amazing insights into the life of a middle-aged woman. I did question her reasons for staying in an Arab country but in the end was happy she remained. The author catches hold of your interest from page one and leaves you wanting a sequel at the end of her story. It is a quick read and guaranteed to hold your interest. I highly recommend it.

"Shalom in my heart, salaam on my lips" - dieses Buch ist ein wirklich sagenhafter Reisebericht.

I have found the book's format particularly convenient. I can easily pick the book up, open to any page, and start learning. No need to read it from start to finish if that's not your style. Gallo shows considerable insight into what makes for success. Buy it!

I both enjoyed and learned a great deal from reading Carmine Gallo's 10 Simple Secrets Of The World's Greatest Business Communicators.
Carmine's words and sentences are "turbo-charged" with right-on-target examples and no-nonsense information from page 1 through page 226. I strongly recommend this book to my family members, friends, colleagues ... and, yes, even to my "enemies." After all ... who wants to sit through another presentation that's more "sedative" than "seductive.!!

After all ... who wants to sit through another presentation that's more "sedative" than "seductive.!!

Interesting treatment on some of the age-old principles. Some chapters tend to over explain the concepts with too many examples.

This book was filled with excitment, mistery, strength, triumph, and personel growth. With this combination there was no way for me to put it down. I only stopped reading to relieve myself and there were times when I put that off. I am not a person who loved to read; but with this book, I read it until I finished. My family was glad to get me back. What an adventure it was to read "Afterwhile".

Since I grew up in the South, I found this book to be a nostalgic walk down Memory Lane. It is rich with true to life vignettes about being Black in the '50's & '60's in America. I particularly enjoyed the role the family played in the absence of her mother, documenting the sense of community that formed a nurturing womb for our growth and development.

I enjoyed Afterwhile because it was written from the world view or you could say the universal view of an African American Woman. I also liked it because it was a coming of age book for a Black Woman growing up in the 6o's, 70's through the 90's and so I could relate to it. It shows how you can persevere, love, and remain optimistic through all types of challenges. I also appreciated the part where Mary J. outlined ways of how she cared for and raised her children and how she was devoted to her family as well as her community. Thanks to the author for sharing this story with us.

"AFTERWHILE in it's content is an intriguing look back of a woman's past that also speaks loudly to the power of her character. This book from an exciting new author searches the debt of purpose, reconciliation and the high calling of a woman of power. Giving names and expressions to a small Southern town, AFTERWHILE pulls you into their lives with realism, accuracy and emotion...You'll want to repeat the journey...A inspirational affecting first novel."

The book "Afterwhile" did contain some juicy and revelaing stuff. But is was also full of typos and I found to be too full of characters whose profiles were not adequately developed. The author made a good attempt at organizing the book via the opening and closing with the letter to her friend. However, the table of contents suggested more insightful development of the plot or more spiritual development of the main character. Neither was achieved in my opinion. The author may have written an Iyanla Vanzant-style book of self disclosure, but she forgot to show adequate personal growth of the main character. Or perhaps the point is that the main character is still struggling with these issues. A good first try. Next time have a better proof reader and an exeperienced editor to strengthen what potentially could be a good book.

If you've heard of alpha-lipoic acid and its being extremely helpful in treating diabetes, liver illnesses, mercury intoxications, or as an anti-oxidant, you may want to know more about it before taking it. This book, by Burt Berkson (MD, PhD) is an excellent answer to your worries. Berkson describes how he got to be interested by alpha-lipoic acid, it's safety record ("FDA"-approved in Germany for 50 years), it's uses, and, perhaps most interesting, his views on medicine.
Not only does Dr. Berkson come across as a very competent and compassionate physician, especially in regards to lipoic acid, on which he is America's leading expert, he is also an outspoken critic of what he correctly sees as problems in modern American medicine. In the first chapter, he describes how he almost ended his career when he saved the life of a dying patient against the wishes of his boss, and how he would do it again. No insurance policy and few doctor's visits can provide the benefits of his invaluable candor, which serves to immunize his readers with a large and healthy level of cynicism about medicine as it is practiced in the United States today.
One thing that this book does not contain is advice on what dosage of lipoic acid to ingest. This may be a sign of great wisdom; in Germany, where Dr. Berkson worked at the Max Planck Institute, and where lipoic acid has been on the market for decades, neurologists who exclude a potential heavy metal poisoning in their patients are not regarded with the sort of wonderment that mermaids and unicorns otherwise garner. Those with a heavy metal problem can suffer some extremely unwelcome and perhaps permanent side-effects if they take the sort of dosages that others easily tolerate. By not giving any advice on this subject, Dr. Berkson certainly isn't giving any bad advice on this subject.
I heartily recommend this book.

If only the author had used twenty pages to say what he has said in whole, long, 155 page book. It is too laborious to get essential facts- like optimum dosage for example is nowhere to be found easily, if at all. He knows his stuff, but must it take so long and why no summary page? Also it is a one size fits all- how do people survive all the diseases he outlines without this potion?

Serioualy, I've dog-earred some of the recipes that have become family traditions since I first got this book. I've learned how special it is to replace all sheets with fun holiday flannel sheets. I do much more than simply put up a tree these days. In short, I must attribute my refreshed zest for holiday living to re-reading this book every year before do anything else. That's what I told myself a few months ago. I like to feed my family good food. We eat lots and lots of vegetables. The price of groceries is going out of sight! I don't plan to stop feeding my family as many vegetables as they will eat. Just as I am needing to spend more money at the supermarket, the price of gasoline is crazy.
A friend of mine told me about The Collard Patch by Cheatham and Elliott. This book is the answer to my problem. It seems so simple. The Collard Patch is teaching me to take a new look at everything my family does with food. I read in the book about ways I could grow food in my own yard. We went to work planting collard greens in our front yard flower bed. We put gardening boxes in the back yard.
We put collard greens all around the front. The back yard gives us as many vegetables as we can eat. We've got collard greens, turnip greens, beets, carrots, onions, tomatoes, zucchini squash, and watermelons. We even put stuff in the freezer. My children love all this fresh food.
We've lost weight at our house. All the work in the yard garden is giving us good exercise. Another thing that's helped us is the way The Collard Patch is showing us how to cook. We don't use nearly as much fat meat and bacon grease as we used to. Now we use olive oil and canola oil, and not much of that. The book is teaching me how to make stuff taste good a whole new way.
I recommend this book to anybody who needs to eat better for less.

I don't think I've ever had collards the same way twice. I've tried to cook them, and I've been less than happy with the results. Well, here is a book with much about collards (headless cabbage.) There is plenty of lore on growing, cleaning and cooking these healthful and delicious staple of Southern cooking. I am sure if I don't find a way to make them come out to the elusive way I like (cooked down, not greasy, a bit of sweet and sour) then this book wasn't at fault. There are hundreds of recipes, from basic greens a la various Southern cooks to sides like cornbread and biscuit. One thing I didn't know; pot likker (the cooking liquid) is not a feature of collards. That is for turnip or mustard greens. Collards are cooked in a minimum of water. Hmmm.

This sunny and delightful book will guide you along to the collard patch. Not a rushed introduction to the collard green, but a nice long and friendly visit to the rearing up of seedlings and growing up with collard greens in the backyard.
This is not just a recipe book but a book with lovely and fun farm stories, some Biblical quotes, recipe contributions from some of Mary Lou and Pauls many friends.
This book features many nutritional facts, fun facts and historical facts on this vegetable. It induces the reader into a relaxed, pleasant smooth ride into the country.
I read this book slowly, devouring a distinct southern flavor. It is written in a easy friendly style.A book being friendly ? You will quickly grasp the authors love for sharing recipes, stories of their friends meeting at the grocers or at church and exchanging recipes and suggestions for cooking collard greens in recipes they acquired from famous restaurants including appetizers and snacks, which was my favorite.
This is a book you will want to spend one long, lovely summer afternoon with, maybe beside a brook or under a shady tree.Although I didn't read the book in such a sweetly pleasant environment,I felt as though I had.
One suggestion I enjoyed and like to share is "don't discard the leftover liquid, instead make the easy soup", since the pot is already flavorful, you don't rinse and waste any precious flavors.
One of my favorite recipes was The Glorious Collard recipe and The Collard Green Puffs. I am looking forward to baking Apple Collard Raisin Pie.
This is a quality piece of work and I enjoyed every minute reading it.You'll love it for its healthy recipes, fun stories and joining the authors in a nostalgic look back with their childhood stories and pets.
Highly recommended ! Read slowly and enjoy.

Long a mainstay of America's southern cuisine, collard greens are becoming popular nationwide as it can be grown in many different horticultural zones across the country. Indeed, about half of all commercially available collard greens are now grown in Californian fields. For those unfamiliar with the culinary uses of collard greens there is now available a cookbook dedicated to this nutritious, dark green, leafy vegetable. "The Collard Patch: Collard Country Cookbook and Reader, Collards and Cornbread Y'all Will Love" is the cooperative work of Mary Lou Cheatham and Paul Elliot. The first section explains the history, handling, nutrient values, and other issues relevant to collard greens. Then presented is an impressively diverse series of 'kitchen cook friendly' recipes featuring an Ingredients list, Preparation instructions, and Equipment/Utensils required. Of special note for each recipe is an 'info block' of Nutrition Facts that includes the number of servings, as well as calories, total fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, sodium, total carbohydrates, dietary fiber, protein, and miscellaneous additional information of value to health conscious consumers. From Perfect Collard Greens; Spinach and Collards; Netherland Salad; and Mexican Collard and Black Bean Soup; to Huevos Collards Picantes; Collard and Shrimp Quesadillas; Collard Biscuits; and Apple Collard Raisin Pie, "The Collard Patch" is a compendium of recipes offering gourmet quality dishes suitable for any dining occasion. Of special note are the various cornbread recipes that are also featured, making "The Collard Patch" a very special addition to personal and community library cookbook collections.

I love the stories as well as the blank pages with the wonderful quotes that gets the creative process flowing. I feel "Coming Home to Ourselves" is an important tool for the novice as well as the more seasoned wife, mother, daughter, worker, etc. Jan gives very helpful suggestions for assessing just where we are in our self-nurturing, which is an area we neglect in our increasingly hectic lives. She then unfolds how we may begin to better care for ourselves, that in so doing, we can offer better care, not to mention empowerment, to all around us. We don't need to be over-achievers; we must take time for us. Jan, and her book, is a blessing for us all to enjoy.

This wonderful book has been a perfect tool for my group of women friends who enjoy getting into in-depth conversations on personal growth. The author touches on topics and situations that seem to be pertinent to every one of us. Her manner of communicating through print seems to open up long-locked doors, helping us look inside and discover who we really are...and how very "worth it" we are to know. On a personal level I really enjoy the journaling section. I can look at a situation in a totally different light when I reread my entries. Through my written words I finally "say things out loud" that have been rattling around in my brain, undefined and without direction. It's a great book for group or individual exploration.

For thousands of years, woman has been the primary caregiver, not only to her children but to everyone in her world as wife, daughter, sister, neighbor and friend. We were taught to suppress our own needs in order to have more to give to others. In Coming Home to Ourselves, we discover that in fact the opposite is true. When we give from a place of emptiness we just become more empty. We must first create and maintain a reservoir of love and life energy from which to draw. Then we can give to others with joy and love, from a place of abundance. Jan Forrest shows us that by making small changes in our daily lives we can find the time to reawaken the spirit of joy within by giving ourselves the gift of ourselves.
