This is an absolutely wonderful story. My 5 year old daughter wants to read it over and over again. It provides a positive father/child image. The illustrations are beautiful. The story talks about various countries in Africa and their particular specialty (i.e. basket weaving/kente cloth, etc.) The story is told in such a way that even young children can easily remember and associate the places and tribes in Africa with their trades. It also has a beautiful picture in the back of the continent of Africa that lends itself well for copying to use in discussions about geography.

My 5 year old received this book when she was 3 years old and we still enjoy reading it as do her friends at school.

The rise and fall of the steel and mining industry

After The Smoke Clears: Struggling To Get By in Rustbelt America by Steve Mellon (a journalist and staff photographer for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette) is an informed and moving chronicle of the rise and fall of the steel and mining industry in America. A tale of the communities surrounding the employment bounty of the steel mills, and the struggle to survive when the closure of this employment bounty left a void in people's ability to support themselves, After The Smoke Clears is a compelling and highly recommended saga of twentieth-century American history enhanced with black-and-white photography.

I read this book ten or more years ago and honestly can't remember the details. What I do remember is the hope and encouragement I felt reading about brave people who cared deeply and passionately about their faith, yet felt compelled to follow a liberal path. As Americans of faith seem to slip farther and farther to the right, it encouraged me to continue to stand firm, both in my faith and in my liberal ideals.

Excellent Resource for Baby Boomers Caring for Parents

I had acquired this book when it first came out and put it in the bookcase. As my parents got older, I found myself pulling it off the shelf more and more. It is a great resource. It answered questions I hadn't even thought of. A tremendous amount of research and work went into this book and I'm really disappointed that it's not being published anymore. If you are finding yourself starting to do more things for your parents, I would highly recommend getting a "used" copy of this book.

Publishers' notes on the 2007 edition by Clearfield Publishing:

Goochland County, Virginia, was carved out of Henrico County in 1728 and was the parent, direct or indirect, of the following nine other Virginia counties arranged in order of formation: Albemarle, Cumberland, Chesterfield, Amherst, Buckingham, Fluvanna, Powhatan, Nelson, and Appomattox. The Goochland County marriage register upon which this work is based was originally compiled by the staff of the Virginia State Library from marriage bonds and ministers' returns, with an admixture of marriage references in Deed Books and Order Books for the period concerned.

Mrs. Williams' transcription of the register is a convenient reference tool, referring to some 3,000 brides and grooms and to another 2,000 associated persons (parents, sureties, and witnesses) mentioned in the register. The marriages are arranged alphabetically by the surname of the groom, with the date of the bond, name of the bride, names of parents, witnesses, and sureties, date of the marriage, name of the officiating minister, and page number of the original marriage register. There is a separate index to brides and another to all other persons mentioned in the text, so that, for research purposes, virtually nothing is wanting.

AIDS: Deadly Threat
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2000-06-14
This book is very straightforward, no sugar coating. Describes in detail what AIDS is, those who are at risk of contracting AIDS, symptoms of AIDS, and the social, political and medical aspects of the disease. Gives case histories involving people who have been denied their given rights because they are infected with the AIDS virus. Gives accounts of the major research and medical break throughs that are being conducted continuously in hopes of stopping the widespread and looking to a cure for this deadly virus. This book is a definite must for teenagers or anyone who is thinking of becoming sexually active or who is already sexually active. Makes you stop and think really hard about the possible consequences of your actions--be them well thought out or carelessly made.
