Calhoun tells a gripping, disturbing and ultimately empowering story. As Rose confronts her worst fears she finds much more than her personal nightmares ever conjured, yet she also discovers more resolve within herself than she had expected. Although Rose has lived a life of bondage that makes her nearly incapable of claiming "mine," her values and the incredibly difficult circumstances she faces eventually enable her to assert herself more generously than those born to privilege might do. The mystical and fantastic elements of this story balance well alongside the practical details of orchard husbandry.

Wonderful Book!

I absolutely loved this book and highly recommend it--one of the best young adult book's ever. I probably read 40-50 books a year and this is onmy favorites list along with Jane Eyre, Poisonwood Bible, Crispin, Inkheart and books by such authors as Dean Koontz and Anne Perry.

I fell in love with the main character, Rose. Her personality is well-developed and she is very likeable. There are questions which develop in your mind as you read and, one by one, they are addressed. You find yourself cheering for Rose and heartbroken right along with her. She has some tough decisions to make and you are not always so sure she's doing the right thing.

I hope you will read this book. I think you'll be glad you did.

Capturing the Child in All of Us
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2002-10-12
As author of THE LITTLE TOY SOLDIER ON THE COVERED BRIDGE,I'd suggest that it is most suitable for those with unfettered imaginations disposed to flights of Christmas fancy, particularly for ages 12-97. Betsy Johnson wrote: "This story captures the child in all of us." TOY SOLDIER is a fantasy, a vehicle of imagination that allows one to experience Christmas from the inside out. It acknowledges the mysterious dynamic of transcending, which usually occurs wittingly or unwittingly during the Christmas season, when many of us imagine entering one of numerous miniature Christmas villages set up in our living room or on the fireplace mantel. TOY SOLDIER is a Christmas tale about three children, a toy soldier and a dog who enter one such village (the New England Village of Duxbury) in search of a lost boy (Little Boy Blue). In their extensive odyssey, the Little Company faces Nature's winter ferocity, experiences a series of extraordinary adventures, and meets unusual characters who inhabit this fantastical account of Christmas happenings in the miniature village of Duxbury Sea Town. My fondest hope is that, as you read the story, you will insert yourself into Christmas and experience it from the inside out . . . lest I remain the only gray-haired "child" lost in flights of fantasy during the Christmas season, this "hallow'd and gracious time."

In The Little Toy Soldier On The Covered Bridge: A Christmas Encounter In The Miniature New England Village Of Duxbury, author Coolidge Wilson takes his young readers on an exciting adventure in a tale of three young children, a toy solider, and a toy dog who are all transported to the miniature village of Duxbury Sea Town. There they search for a lost boy and encounter a host of unusual and memorable characters along the way. The Little Toy Soldier On The Covered Bridge is a welcome and highly recommended addition to the growing library of classic Christmas literature with its underlying message that grace and faith live within us all -- and sometimes revealing itself in rusted tin toys and floppy-eared dogs!

He speaks the truth in plain English that everyone can clearly understand. Read this book for yourself and share it with others. I would highly recommend it to anyone.

A Maxwell's Demon on the brink of collapse.

'London Bridge' continues the misadventures of Ferdinard, anti-hero of 'Guignol's Band' and altar-ego of Celine. Exiled in the London underworld during the Great War, having served at the front and been decorated for bravery, a shellshocked Ferdinand, shrapnel in his brain, prone to fits and blackouts and a gammy left arm, on the run after the violent death of an associate, has hooked up with Sosthene de Rodiencourt, an aging Orientalist mystic. To finance a trip to Tibet, both have offered their services to a wealthy baronet, Colonel O'Collogham, who is testing military gas-masks in the hope of landing a lucrative contract. While Sosthene and O'Collogham test the masks, rattling the large house with bombs and chemicals, Ferdinand attempts to resist the lure of his host's angelic, underage, skimpily-dressed ward, Virginia, whom the Colonel humiliates by whipping in front of the servants. Terrorised by paranoia (that both the police and his old cronies are after him), a trip into the city for supplies sees Ferdinand confronted with unwelcome shades from the past.

The exhausting, febrile, exclamatory style of 'Bridge' takes its cue from its two protagonists, the mentally disoriented Ferdinand and the rythmically possessed Sostehme, with his epileptic Eastern dances. Comprising a handful of extended set-pieces, Celine doesn't so much describe the action so much as circle around it like a deranged vulture, skirting it with an excess of repetition, obscenity and slang. Ferdinand's 'reportage', coloured by paranoia, hallucination, spasms, fantasy, desire, dream, rage, confession, frustration, guilt, fear and shellshock is further disoriented by the skittish rhythms of his partner, whose possessed, frenzied dances imitate cod-Oriental texts. Many of the teeming set-pieces reveolve around literal dances - the acrobatic choreography of a ghost in a pulsing nightclub; the attempts by Sosthene to stop traffic in Picadilly with a ritualistic dance - and the style mimics their wild, jerking, swaying movements. The novel's coup-de-grace is an astonishing 100 page parody of Proust's 'Time Regained', using the same subject matter - Zeppelin air-raids, a phantasmagoric social occasion in which the hero meets figures from his past; the disorienting mix of aristocracy and criminality - but grinding it through a snarling demotic, brutal lowlife energy and slapstick violence, culminating in the arrival of a four months-long decomposing corpse.

This misanthropic catalogue of degraded and violent, if vibrant, human interaction finds room for some of the most vivid, hyperbolic and poetic descriptions of (a re-imagined) London in literature, with its labyrinthine back-streets, infernal hideouts and hangouts, and the teeming, larger-than-life activity of its ports, just as England's imperial glory is coming to an end.

The compulsive present-tense immediacy of the narrative is occasionally broken off by reminders of the narrator's vantage-point in the hell of World War 2, with the full knowledge of civilisation's embrace of the abyss. This twisted nostalgia, complete with incredulous winkings with the reader, mixed with Shakespeare, fairy tale and the Arabian Nights, illuminates the violence and grime with a genuine enchantment.

The full flavour of Celine's complex, neologistic verbal onslaught can never be caught in English, but translator Dominic di Bernardi comes closest yet, capturing rhythm, pace and the sheer overabundance or words, and is a vast improvement on the existing version of 'Guignol's Band' (any chance of having a go at that now, Mr. di Bernardi?)

On the Bridge...

The manuscript was found in the ruins of a post war Europe, "London Part 2" was the continuation of "Guignol's Band"...set in England amidst the lower denizens of the underworld during World War One, Celine invites us to walk down the dark paths once again...

This book is so much more than a manual on self-realization. It is a manual for living. In clear, concise language the Shivapuri Baba relates very practical advice for putting your day-to-day affairs in order, thereby creating the leisure to focus your energy on your spiritual endeavors with your free time. I highly recommend this book to everyone seeking to create a balanced structure for their daily life, a structure which will serve as a strong edifice upon which to build the temple of their spirituality.
One note to buyers: The book I purchased has 8 blank pages where there should be text. It looks like a publishing error. Before purchasing, I recommend contacting the seller to check if their copy has the same problem.

Jenny Eriksen had some unplanned surprises for her kidnapper. and they turned out to be a bit humorous. Never before had she seen a man's naked chest.

Someone has just stolen 10,000 dollars from her fiance and then she meets a wounded man on his doorstep.
Olivia wanted to run.
You have to love the first meeting of Jenny and Luke McLintock.
and it just keeps getting better.

Luke was raised with Daniel but now there were no brotherly feelings between them as Daniel keeps denying little Adam and his responsibilities.

Jenny is taken on a journey that ends up revealing Daniel as so very different from what she had been lead to believe. Daniel was determined to have Jenny as his bride to solidify his connections with her father.
It sure takes daddy long enough to put in an appearance.

And then Daniel's thug, Harley shows up - now no one is safe. Harley's orders are to recapture Jenny and eliminate Luke.

Although Jenny can't believe Luke's tales of Daniel she soon falls in love with little Adam and is worried what will happen to him.
The child can't live in a saloon.

This is a very captivating - moving story - and this author is a keeper.

Kate Bridges writes fantastic americana romance!

Kate Bridges found a fan in this reviewer with her first book, THE DOCTOR'S HOMECOMING. She continues her streak of great books with her second release, LUKE'S RUNAWAY BRIDE.

Jenny Eriksen was content with her life in Denver. In four months she would be married to Daniel Kincaid-the epitome of whom she wants in her life. He organizes charity events and does what he can to further the community. But Jenny's life changes when Luke McLintock appears in her life.

Luke can't believe that the Daniel he grew up with could turn into a man who would shirk his responsibilities and lie to everyone he knows. Luke sets out to force Daniel to take care of his five year old son since the boy's mother has died. Daniel refuses so Luke takes action and kidnaps Daniel's fiancé. He plans on taking her back to Montana so that Daniel will come after her and be forced to see his child. What Luke doesn't plan on doing is falling in love with Daniel's fiancé.

Jenny is hard pressed to trust Luke, but she has a hard time denying what he says when she is faced with so many questions about Daniel's lifestyle. How could she have been so blind about who he really is? And maybe Luke isn't the bad guy in this situation?

Jenny and Daniel are brought together by an unlikely circumstance, but the end results are beautiful indeed! Kate Bridges has a way of bringing to life the time period but still filling it with beauty and humor and love. Kate Bridges is now on my must read list and I believe that she is one of the best writers of Americana romance today.

This book is a quick read and great fun! In fact, it's a hoot! The main characters are quirky and off-beat. These eccentric ladies are a refreshing change from the typical murder mystery cast. Unexpected revelations abound and you never know where they are headed next as they take dangerous matters and morality into their own hands.

How to survive your bohemian, artistic or activist lifestyle

We've all come across starving artists, musicians, and creative types whose personal affairs are in such shambles that they may never realize their talent, but what to do? You can't marry all of them, and they steadfastly resist sound business advice.

Ms. Bridges gets past that resistance by devising visualization techniques for sound business practices based on the symbols and archetypes of the Tarot deck's major arcana. Non-linear types will be relieved to discover that it's not necessary to work through all the steps in exact order.

And she counters the thorny question of "aren't I selling out?" by appealing to the reader to bring their gifts into the world in harmony, just like the Indians did.

After the usual soul searching about "am I doing the right thing for the planet?", being in business for yourself turns out to be exactly what you expected-- developing the habits of personal organization and initiative necessary to carry out an original project.

This good-humored approach to banishing chaos and impoverished despair will have a rather unique charm for certain out-of-the-box thinkers.

Although many Native Americans are justifiably appalled at the expropriation of indigenous spirituality by flaky suburbanites, I'd urge them to cut Ms. Bridges some slack regarding this book. It's exactly the sort of practical survival information we need so that our alternative communities can thrive and grow.
