E-books have really found a niche on my shelves lately, at least my electronic shelves. Though I still read 'traditional' romance novels, I think the engaging and different story lines plus the hot, hot sex bring an extra zing that a lot of stories are missing now and days.

Shattered is just that type of novel. Alex Houston is a dancer and college student struggling through life when one freak night introduces her to the man of her dreams, Steven Macmillan. They have a passionate (and I mean passionate) interlude that leaves them both yearning for more, but it takes a year for the two of them to hook up again. What follows from there is an engaging tale of how preconcieved notions, fate and great sex can snatch up even the most aware person.

Although I own this book in both formats, I was really amped to see it on Amazon and I purchased my copy because it's definitely one for both my shelves.

A great read by Karen Monroe

Wow, what a great story. I purchased Karen Monroe's story, Shattered, when a friend recommended it to me. I'm a huge fan of erotic romance, but I love a great story as well. Ms. Monroe has the recipe for a spicy and quality read in Shattered.

Alex, an exotic dancer, instantly enthralls Steve, a millionaire, upon their first meeting. While the plot is great, the chemistry between Alex and Steve steals the show. Ms. Monroe uses great imagery to draw us into Steve and Alex's world. They are both complex persons who are battling with past demons and current struggles, but who can't deny their attraction. Steve will move mountains to get Alex, and she's overwhelmed at times by his intensity. However she realizes that true love can be deep, emotional and steadfast. I enjoyed Alex and Steve's journey towards their HEA, and I highly recommend this story for those who enjoy a good erotic story.

Additonally, the secondary characters, Jake (Steve's brother) and Ameril (Alex's friend), have a hot relationship as well. I certainly hope Ms. Monroe will write their story...SOON! Bravo to Karen Monroe for a winner with Shattered!

Although relatively small (75 pages), this paperback covers a little bit of everything pertaining to Sibes. From breed standards to training to breeding. For it's price it covers a lot of ground but might not go into the detail one might expect from a larger book. However, for it's size and price I feel it is an excellent book worthy of purchase for any owner of the Siberian Husky.

A general guide to the Husky-a must for first time owners.

This small book could not have hoped to cover "Everything..." as it claims, but I have found it to be useful on many occasions. It provides a general guide to almost every conceivable situation and concern, providing the quality of advice a new owner needs. An owner of a new sibe puppy will want to supplement this book, so they should consult their breeder-use an established husky kennel, not a backyard breeder-other texts, and their vet. Other topics, like medical/health and diet, will likewise be covered in more detail in other places. Don't stop with this book but do get it if you are with sibe. And hang on to that leash!

This is the first to examine the works of Ammann, one of the finest modern bridge designers of modern times. This uses over 200 archival photos to present displays of his New York bridges, their construction, and the development of his ideas. The in-depth details on bridge designs of the times and Ammann's place in the world of bridge designers makes for excellent coverage.

Not just for Engineers: A Love-song to New York City Bridges
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2000-08-27
This book is as special to New Yorkers as it is to Engineering Enthusiasts. As New Yorker in Exile, I now live a life where if I traverse one major bridge a year, it's an event. When I lived in New York City (Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and Stane Island at various times), the crossing of these major Bridges was a daily event. Not a day went by when I didn't listen to the Traffic reports and have to quickly calculate my Commute strategy in order to choose the most efficient Span to cross. When going Upstate to visit the parents, I often crossed The Whitestone, Throgsneck or Tri-borough if traffic was too congested in Manhattan. Sometimes, I'd cross the Verrazano, The Brooklyn and the George Washington. This book honours the creation of the modern bridges, their design, construction, completion and functionality as well as describing the political and economic climate in which they were conceived and completed. It answers many of the passing questions that came to my Driving Mind as I stalled in traffic at the Tolls of these Bridges and it brings back memories of my life in the City of Islands. As I mentioned in the title of this review, while kinda technical and history-laden, this is a love song to the Bridges of New York City. Buy it, read it and you'll learn to be grateful for living in a time when these bridges ease travel and not curse them as I used to do occaisonally during Jams. Before reading this book, I never bothered to imagine New York before them and now I appreciate them all the much more.

A Great 20th Century Bridge Engineer's Work

"Six Bridges - The Legacy of Othmar H. Ammann by Darl Rastorfer is a very well written book about a great 20th Century engineer and his engineering feats in long span suspension bridges. This is a must read for everyone for it reveals the trials and tribulations of a man who made history by using scientific principles to design world record breaking bridges.

With his European education Ammann sought out a dream to come to America and seek opportunities in the new country. Within two weeks he started his first position. The early years of Othmar Ammann's career are clearly outlined showing how he gained his knowledge with diligence in various career positions. His thoroughness and dedication to hard work is demonstrated by the trust, faith and confidence of the people who hired him. His reputation was building.

I enjoyed the stories which tell of his character building during hard times also. After his plans for a bridge challenged his future with an employer, he was able to move on and demonstrate his convictions with successful accomplishments. Interesting political considerations are also profiled in the important decisions of costly construction and pressures from public opinion. Ammann's skill to work with people results in many obstacles being overcome.

When the trials and tribulations of office competition evoled, Ammann had the fortitude to break away and start anew. He was a man of visions and had dreams to fulfill. He was a man of principles and nothing could sway him. He was confident his engineering background and skills could lay a path of successful bridge design and construction.

No other bridge engineer has influenced one city more than O.H. Ammann. The history of the planning stages of the designing and construction of these six bridges is well written and interesting for all readers. These six bridges: Georg Washington, Bayonne, Triborough, Bronx-Whitestone, Throngs Neck, and Verrazano-Narrows all are beautifully photographed. A chapter for each bridge outlines their construction with great description and many breathtaking photographs. If you have never been to New York Ctiy this author will certainly take you there with beautiful photos and interesting, informative narrative. Another book including O.H. Ammann's life is: Henry Petrosky's - "Engineers of Dreams: Great Bridge Builders"

Engineering as an experience in beauty

Review Date: 2000-09-05
During the first half of this century, American bridges became the largest and most beautiful structures ever built; Othmar Ammann, a Swiss engineer who came to New York in 1904, was the quiet genius who built six of the very best.

George Washington, Bayonne, Triborough, Bronx-Whitestone, Throgs Neck and Verrazano-Narrows are his monuments; like the skyscrapers, literally "invented" in New York, the builders of suspension bridges perfected their art in the US. It shows what can be accomplished with new wealth, pride and vision. One of the finest is the Verrazano-Narrows bridge; the towers for the cables are as high as a seventy story building. To put this in perspective, that's twice as high as the tallest "skyscraper" in Phoenix.

Each tower was assembled with 10,000 steel cells, fastened with six million rivets and two million bolts. The Empire State Building has 365,000 tons of steel, the bridge has 1,265,000 tons. Like the Parthenon, where the pillars were sculpted to present the most pleasing appearance, the bridge towers are tapered from top to bottom. The two towers are plumb, but the curvature of the earth means the tops are one and five-eighth inches further apart than the base. Since metal expands in hot weather, the roadway at the center of the span rises or falls by 12 feet during a temperature change of 100 degrees.

Bigger bridges will be built. Some will be more beautiful. But these six are the ones that set the standard. Everything from now will be an adaptation of them. It's like the Golden Age of radio, or television, or movies, or the Internet; experimentation and innovation is always greatest when technology is new.

A suspension bridge is truly an artistic sculpture, because it is based on natural curve of a cord strung between two points. Look at a spider's web, the curve of a bird's wing, or wheat bending in the wind; there is a contrast between nature and the massive stone blocks of earlier bridges. The book is admirably illustrated with more than 200 photos; they show the artistry, and the incredible labor that went into the construction of each.

In today's society, when lowest cost seems to be the only consideration, some wisdom from Ammann in 1958 stands out, "In fact, an engineer designing a bridge is justified in making a more expensive design for beauty's sake. After all, many people will have to look at the bridge for the rest of their lives. Few of us appreciate eyesores, even if we should save a little money by building them."

It shows good design is possible, and adds a great deal to a community. Like Will Bruder's design of the new Phoenix library, skillfully described in the book "Phoenix Central Library" by Oscar Riera Ojeda, et al, this book is a must for anyone interested in better communities.

A delightful compilation of the best representatives of Spurgeon's wisdom and expositions of how to use God's Law (Ten Commandments) in evangelism.
There is little original writing by the author other than his preface. However, Ray has provided some commentary after certain quotes which does not serve to detract the reader from Spurgeon's topics. This is a smart approach to this collection. Spurgeon was such an inspired rhetorist, gifted with an imcomparably rich vocabulary that demands little or no explanation, which is a testament to Spurgeon's ability to preach to all levels of human intellect. There's not much to expound on the fact that all mankind is under the curse of sin having violated God's holy standard and the need for salvation from eternal damnation through the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ on Calvary.
A required edition for anyone involved in evangelism.

A great novel with (at the time) revolutionairy ideas of travel via 'wormholes'. The character is typical of Sci-fi writing of the time, and there is a leading character that has to be an early personification of 'Giles Habbibula'.
Well worth the read, and great book from THE Grand Master of Sci-fi.

According to Alexei and Cory Panshin, in the critical work The World Beyond the Hill, Star Bridge's genesis goes back to 1944 or so. Jack Williamson, inspired by Isaac Asimov's Foundation stories, decided to do his own "managed history/galactic empire" novel, with the working title of Star of Empire. Williamson had problems making the idea work, so that it took 10 more years plus James Gunn's assistance to finally make a story out of the idea.

And what a story! I first read this novel at the age of 9, just a few years after it came out, and have periodically re-read it every so often since then. I outgrew much of what I read in my teen years and before, but this book is one of those stories that I still enjoy now as much as I did then.

This story succeeds on more than one level. Most obviously, it is a fastpaced adventure story. On another level, it's one of those stories where things aren't quite what they seem at first glance. Or at the second (third? fourth?) glance. That, I think,is what keeps me coming back to this novel -- the thought that I may see something in it that I missed on the previous reads.

One thing that completely perplexes me is how unknown Star Bridge is, even among science fiction fandom. It is in the top rank of Williamson's work (that goes for Gunn, too), yet I find that even big fans of Williamson often have never heard of it. Hopefully there will be enough demand for used copies of this book that someone may do another reprint. I think it's about time -- and it would really be cool if it were to be made into a movie.

One of the all-time great SF books

Why has this book never been made into a movie? It has it all...adventure, romance, a Metropolis-like futuristic empire, the idea of near-instantaneous space travel.
Well, that part of the book was probably the inspiration for the original Star Gate movie. But this book's plot was much more coherent than the revolt against the sketchy, androgynous tyrant of Star Gate. The character of Wu is one of the best executed and most thoughtful in the history of the SF genre, IMHO.

This opened the door into hard SF for me

I first read "Star Bridge" in sixth grade at the age of 11; I'm now almost 43, and I still hold this as one of the greatest SF books I've read.

Williamson's imagery and wordcraft set the standard for many of today's modern masters. His antihero Horn, the eccentric man-with-a-secret Wu, and his decaying human empire are shown in high relief, and the imagery evoked burns itself into your mind permanently.

Find and read this book; do what you must to acquire a copy, and savor it slowly. Horn's passage through the Tube and hyperspace is one of the most stirring examinations of consciousness I've yet to read; it still moves me.

Find out why one man can move an empire...

Imangine reading a book, and forgetting what you had just read?
Or trying to "get" what the author was saying, or falling asleep after reading a book. This happens all to often. It's observable it all schools, and in most everyone, reading almost anything.
I grew up knowing this technology, and recently starting fully using it in my everyday life.
I used it to get to new heights, in playing chess. I always wanted to be a good chess player, but felt frustrated by the many books, and what-not out there, that seemed over my head, or too confusing. Finding the right chess book, led me to owning almost 300 books! and still not getting better.
I recently went back, and used this study tech, on a piticular tough chess book, and to my amazement, I learned something! and still remember it to this day. Now i'm ready to get through the whole book, and get to new heights in chess.
With this data by Mr Hubbard, anyone can learn what ever they set out to!

Clarifies study enormously!

I wish I had been given this book before I started college - it would have made my studies much easier.

This book covers the basic technology of successful study.

Did you ever get to the bottom of a page and realize you don't know what you just read?

Have you ever gotten headaches or stomaches while studying?

Have you ever felt frustrated by study materials?

Did you ever just want to throw a textbook away and quit the class?

I, like probably most everybody, have experienced all these things. This little book explains what EXACTLY happens to cause these different phenomenon. Not only does it explain the cause, but it gives very simple - VERY simple - ways to handle them!

I use these study techniques with my children. My 12-year-old just read the whole set of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and is now reading "Runaway Jury" - not something most 12-year-old kids can do. He's been reading high school science books for a few years now, and he uses these techniques himself in his study.

This study technology makes it possible for anyone able to read to be able to read anything. Legal documents, scientific texts, whatever -- if you use the techniques as laid out in this book, you can learn anything.

Unlike the "how to study" course I took my first semester in college, this book actually covers basics of learning that EVERYONE runs into, whether they are an engineer, or writer, or artist.

It breaks down basic barriers to learning and explains clearly how to overcome each one.

This is not dry theory - it's practical application that the student APPLIES. I have gotten SO much out of this material already!

I got this lil pamphlet thing from this yellow tent in my city.

Guess what: I CAN FIALY UNDERSTAND PHYISICS! Although my teachers and family dis the guy who wrote this book, the book kicks ass all the same. The idea of clearing words up while studying is SOOOOO GOD DAM TRUE! Just try it out! There is no psychobabble about brains and nerve pulses, just 3 study steps. You really can conquer any subject by applying the oh-so-simple techniques outlined.

The reason I never liked physics and got 'bored' or 'wooden' was through no pictures in the school text book. I now draw a diagram for every concept in all my lessons and clear up EVERY word I don't understand in English class.

I really really recommend you get dis book.

I have been street witnessing for the past 5 years. I am by nature a shy, introverted Christian woman, so if I can do it, everybody can.

Ray Comfort's ministry at livingwaters.com has been very useful in training me in how to come up to complete strangers and open a conversation with them so that they will be receptive to a presentation and explanation of the Gospel. I have witnessed face to face to well over 1000 people over the year and I'd say that at least 95% of them enjoyed the conversations and thanked me for talking to them about God. And I owe much of that to the training I got from Ray Comfort's teachings and example.

Ray Comfort is himself a very shy man (I know I've met him several times), and it's just out of love for the Lord that he witness to people in spite of his fear of rejection.

I don't have the 'gift of evangelism', just as I do not have the gift of speaking English. It's just something I've learned to do by doing it over and over. And I got good at it simply because I've been doing it regularly. It's like learning to play the piano: it's about practice, practice, practice.

"Thanks A Million" will teach you how to use tracts as ice breakers to initiate conversations easily with complete strangers. It teaches you how to direct the conversation toward spiritual things, and how to explain the Gospel in a language that people can understand and remember. The book gives plenty of illustrations and analogies that you can use to share the gospel in more a vivid and memorable way.

I recommend this book along with Mark Cahill's "One thing You Can't Do In Heaven" for those who want to learn how to turn almost any conversation into an evangelistic discussion.

Adrenaline Filled (yet, simple and everyday) Adventures in Biblical Evangelism

If you want to share your faith but don't know how, this is a great book, reading like a collection of case studies (or real-life examples) of how to actually do it, most in simple everyday scenarios, such as witnessing to people you meet at work, around your street, service workers that come to your house, colleagues, etc. It also contains some less everyday witness encounters, such as witnessing to prisoners, famous celebrities, "open-air" preaching at a High School, witnessing to psychics, gang members, and more.

Biblically sound, lasting conversions come when sharing your faith the way Jesus did it, using the law to show sinners their sins, so that they can truly appreciate Jesus' sacrifice on the cross (the grace part). Biblical-based witnessing is guaranteed to give you joy and drama in life!

This book is sure to help you increase your zeal for evangelism, as well as train you in the practical how-to's that can often be intimidating to Christian believers. Matthew Henry states (book quotes him): "I would think it a greater happiness to gain one soul to Christ than mountains of silver and gold to myself."

This is an excellent follow up book after you have read the more introductory book that has more Biblical exposition as to the way of witnessing, why it is done in this way, and similar questions, see The Way of the Master by the same authors from the Way of the Master ministry.

I suppose I shouldn't be surprised, given the title...but somehow I thought the author might have at least attempted to be somewhat balanced. 'Hatchet Job', 'Slanted', PMS-NBC like' - choose the one you like - they all apply.
I gave the work one star, only because the publisher at least had the integrity to not 'spin' the sample in order to suggest that it was an even handed piece - in order to sell full editions.
Rather typical of the left blogisphere writing...possibly even well done if you are into that left wing propagander...but not for most thinking voters.

Didn't Expect Love Poem But Also Not a Vitriolic Spewing

I'm sorry I can't agree with the other reviewers. By the title, I didn't expect a love poem to Sarah Palin; but I also didn't expect a vitriolic spewing against her. I expected a fair rendition of facts "so vigorously researched." Apparently Ms. Katz doesn't like Sarah Palin because Sarah Palin is a conservative, Christian, anti-feminist, the exact opposite of Sue Katz. While Ms. Katz' own words seem to indicate that she does not believe in Jesus ("Oh, I forgot, I'm one of the heathens who, for too many reasons to list, is simply not going to be among those with god-given visas to Alaska"), she doesn't hesitate to invoke Jesus' name when it suits her ("Jesus was a Community Organizer, Pontius Pilate was a Governor.) She talks about "the truth," but then praises Hilary Clinton. Does anyone remember "the truth" of the Clinton presidency?

Let me say that I am a white female. Most of my friends consider me a liberal. I think of myself as a moderate but not a feminist. I believe in gay rights, civil rights, pro-choice and Jesus. While Ms. Katz would require that I produce them, I do have good friends of both sexes who happen to be gay.

I volunteered to read this book and write a review. By doing so, I got a free MSWord copy e-mailed to me. I preferred to buy it from Amazon so I could read it on my Kindle. I now feel cheated.

I've been reading Sue Katz's blog for a year or two, so I was really glad to see she wrote this book. It's a fast read, smart, and cleared up all the questions I had about Sarah Palin. I'm not surprised it seems to be an instant hit.

In less than a month, Sue Katz turned out a searing look at Sarah Palin. Katz shows us the inconsistencies, the inaccuracies, the confusions that come out of Palin's mouth. We see the influences on this candidate (and we cringe--at least, I did). And some of us wonder if she actually has the strength of conviction to stand up to some of these influences. But wait! Just what ARE her convictions? Palin has not spelled that out for us, has she? Or perhaps I have been unable to find them buried under the inaccuracies.

Sue Katz's book has been helpful to me. Not in the least because of the extensive bibliography she has included. Katz did her homework here, and I doubt many readers have found the time to do this for themselves. I sure haven't had time! I can use Katz's bibliography to lead me quickly to what I need to read. I didn't need this book to form an opinion about Palin, but it certainly helped organize my thoughts between reality and emotion.

I wish Katz had had time to add thoughts about the Biden-Palin debate (at this writing, that debate is this evening), and perhaps to have one more look by a proofreader. But we are getting close to election day and there was no more time.

The bottom line is that Sue Katz does not think Palin is capable of leading the country, and she tells us why -- AND backs up her decision with research. Thank you for this, Sue. And Sarah? Thanks, but no thanks!

INSIGHTFUL AND INFORMATIVE

I've been hoping for many weeks that the McCain camp would have provided more background information on Gov. Palin by now to help voters better understand who she is and what she's done. What's happened to date is sad and unfair to voters: she's given few interviews and gives a lot of canned comments when campaigning and speaking in public. This has really bothered me because I consider myself a moderate so I try very hard to learn what both sides are like in any presidential campaign and I don't always vote in lock-step with my party. Thankfully Sue Katz has written an informative guide to help people like me learn more about the candidate and help me make a better decision next month when I vote. It's a good read, and just in time for the vice presidential debate tomorrow. Definitely worth the price and more.

The infernal view of the title is that of Frances Treadwell, fleeing New York and the overmany fictions she told down there. Her old family place in Maine, however, offers a prickly refuge. Indeed, Sarah Goodyear's first novel spendidly upsets expectations at every turn. It's a story of seeking peace and quiet that gets disrupted by the crash of a meteorite, of renewing love that drops the lover into a deeper and scarier murk than before. Throughout, too, we're never far from good-humored insight, though always at arm's length from treacly sentiment. Perhaps most impressive is how Goodyear sticks close to her protagonist yet exposes all the young woman's contradictions. For aren't Frances' more dubious choices rooted in trepidation about what's new and revitalizing? And in that, doesn't she shares a potentially fatal flaw with the ingrown rural place around her? A debut to celebrate, "Burning Bridge" bears out the ancient wisdom that you can't go home again -- but proves as well that there's no other way to achieve wisdom yourself.

...if you've ever thought about leaving New York. I felt as if these people could be me or any of my friends. FINALLY, here's a contemporary book that shows wonderful, flawed but sympathetic characters in believable, complex relationships. To me, it recalled "Rashomon" and "House of Sand and Fog". Great book!
