If you're looking for an accessible, casual introduction to the subject, look elsewhere (I highly recommend David Bird's _Bridge Squeezes for Everyone_). It's also not suitable for beginning players. This is a book for serious study but is well worth the effort.

Seeing things AnewReview Date: 2004-06-05
Mr. Cortright's book highlights the most beautiful and unusual bridges from around the world, covering a span of nearly 3000 years. They're all here, from ancient Roman arches to extravagant futuristic showpieces. Whether the locale is Buenos Aires or Shanghai, you'll find yourself daydreaming about who built these bridges and what it would be like to cross them. I picked up this book in an odd moment and found myself captivated for hours.
Ideal for bridge fans, but even better for those who simply like to travel in their imagination. Highly recommended.

Whether it be a multi-century old stone bridge in the old world or a recently built cable-stayed structure, you can't help but pause to admire the hundreds of examples of man's handiwork in Bridging the World.
Grouped by the method of construction used, these bridges are a tribute to man's ingenuity and his need to communicate. Featuring bridges from almost 30 countries and from 6 continents, the book is guaranteed to leave you wanting to see more, perhaps even in your own locale.
Absolutely beautiful.Review Date: 2004-12-18
The photography is exquisite -- you can see the individual cables, the shadows on the water or canyon beneath the structure, and the texture of the stones and other materials used in the bridge construction. The book arranges the bridges more or less chronologically or by length of span. The photos are divided by method of construction used in the bridge -- beam, arch, suspension, cable-stayed, aqueducts and special bridges. The book begins with structures built in ancient times and moves on to huge, modern works of art. To see several of the photos, visit www.bridgeink.com. Strongly recommended, especially as a gift.

The upside: This will really help you to understand not just overcalls, but hand evaluation, bidding, opening leads, defense, and what in general is going on. Who holds what, etc.
Its a study of whats going on in all 4 players hands, given the information of a single bid, or one round of bidding. Why, with the exact same hand, you can overcall with one sequence, and pass with the other. I spent a few weeks reading this, going over the hundreds of sequences and hands. I'm now more aware of certain lurking dangers, and what to look out for.

Don't talk, walkReview Date: 2004-01-10
Interesting to place this book's approach alongside more modern bridge textbooks. Take the likes of Cohen's 'Law of Total Tricks'. It expounds the 'Law' and then illustrates how a player should use it via a modest selection of example hands. By contrast, Mike Lawrence bombards the reader with every conceivable hand and explains (albeit in logical order) how you should be thinking about these along the way.
This hardly SEEMS a sound teaching approach: the type is small, there is loads of repetition (Lawrence admits it), and the 'quizzes' at the end of each section are not organised in a 'reader-friendly' way.
But where this book succeeds and some modern books fail, is curiously in its insistence upon looking at each hand in a strictly individual way, as opposed to selling out to easy mnemonics or rules.
While more modern books (take one of Eddie Kantar's books on defence, which I also think are excellent) are nicely presented, contain witty 'after-dinner' asides, and have an interactive feel, their neatness sometimes makes me feel that bridge is all clearcut rules and decisions, hard for the beginner, easy for the expert.
But Mike Lawrence seems to be experiencing real pain on many of his example deals! You will frequently see him write, 'I don't know what to do with this hand', not because he's not a good player, but because he understands the difference, for a bridge player, between 'knowing the path' and 'walking the path'.
The writer of this book won't sit on his pedestal and lecture you with rules, he will walk the path WITH you. If you will take the time to let him lead you, it should prove time well spent.

Truly Communicate!Review Date: 2005-02-14
A Powerful ToolReview Date: 2005-05-05
What I WOULD like to stress is that this is a book that puts a very powerful tool in the hands of anyone who is honest enough to use it without having some other axe to grind. The communication principles outlined by Mr. Hubbard can be used (easily!) to analyze and improve every area your life, and to remedy many common problems.
Are there areas in which you are waiting anxiously for someone else to communicate something or to do something you want? Are you hoping for some sort of acknowledgement that you're not likely to get? Do you have unanswered letters around, or things you've wanted to do or agreed to do but haven't yet found time for? Is there someone around who keeps talking to you or directing some other communication your way, and it's driving you nuts? Are there people around you who just don't seem to listen?
If the answer to any of these questions is "yes" (and this is not by any means a complete list--I just took these off the top of my head), or if you're having any OTHER kind of problem in life, YOU NEED TO READ AND APPLY THIS BOOK.

Barabra Cameron is a kindred spirit in Christ.Review Date: 2007-10-20
What makes Barbara Cameron's story exceptional is that anyone can relate to her. We're able to see her adult relationship with God begin with her simple belief that He is our Creator who helps us when we pray. Then we're able to see Barbara's realization that He is Everything and there is nothing without absolute Trust in Him, and the changes in her life that ensue.
The feelings and emotions described in this book are the feelings and emotions so many of us deal with everyday and are left wondering how to deal with issues of faith and submission to God.

But their amazing transformation into Born Again, on fire for Jesus Chrsit and their passion that none should miss out on Heaven is so honest, and pure, and indeed rare in a Hollywood where it's hip to be anti-Christian, anti-morals, and whatever goes is OK. Praise God for this family and I know that He is indeed Blessing us with this most excellent book. Thank you Ray Comfort for inspiring Mrs. Cameron. Thank You Mrs. Cameron for sharing your life with us, and thank you Jesus for loving and dying for all of us so that we may be saved!

The Beautiful GospelReview Date: 2008-07-01
A New Christian Classic?Review Date: 2008-02-05
The authors are firmly convinced that the message of the cross is central to true faith. You can't read more than a few pages of The Great Exchange and not clue into how much these two gentlemen cherish the doctrine of the atonement. Over and over, page after page, they show us from numerous texts that the apostles are teaching us a precious truth:"..[T]he Great Exchange that results from the death of the perfect sacrifice is a twofold substitution: the charging of the believer's sin to Christ results in God's forgiveness, and the crediting of Christ's righteousness to the believer results in his justification."
There you have it--the great exchange of Christ's atonement. If you desire to better understand and appreciate this great exchange--and we all should, shouldn't we?--this book is the right place to start. It's good theology coupled with writing that anyone can understand. I plan to add it to my short list of theology books for the lay person, but it would be well-suited for any pastor or teacher, too.
I have just a few very small complaints, too small to mention were this an ordinary book. But it's not ordinary; it ought to be a classic based on the depth of content. It's that depth of content that makes some of the awkward phrasing, like "equally as", for instance, worthy of mention. There are also a few factual errors that I found as I read and studied along. The text says, for example, that the phrase "in him" occurs twice in 2 Corinthians 5:21 and it's only there once. (It occurs occurs once more in verse 19, and this is probably the second occurrence intended.)
In addition, there are more than a few places where statements are made that are undoubtedly correct, but that I'd like to see defended more explicitly. Let me show you what I mean. The book states, "As God, and as co-maker of the law, Christ was under no obligation on his own account to be under the law or to obey the law, and, as a result, he is capable of giving his voluntary obedience away." I don't disagree, but I couldn't give the reasons why this statement is right. I wish the authors had given the reasoning behind this statement and several others like it, perhaps not in the text, but in endnotes or appendices.
I do hope The Great Exchange becomes a classic, because it is a wonderful tool for expanding the reader's understanding of Christ's work and increasing their love for Christ himself. I highly recommend it, and if enough of you buy it, maybe they'll take care of my quibbles in the second edition.
A Thorough and Accessible Treatment of Christ's AtonementReview Date: 2008-05-30
'The Great Exchange' is, in simple terms, a book about the gospel. More specifically, it is a book that explains what the Bible teaches about Christ's substitutionary atonement, and how this atonement makes us right with God. The theme verse of the book is II Corinthians 5:21, "For our sake [God] made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God." In chapter after chapter, Bridges and Bevington explain, from from many Old and New Testament passages, what it means that Christ became sin on our behalf so that we could become the righteousness of God. In a word it means that Christ, the sinless one, was charged with our sin, while we, in the Great Exchange, received Christ's perfect righteousness.
Bridges and Bevington also focus on the representative life of Christ, explaining that the fullness of Christ's atonement not only happened at the cross; it was occurring over the course of his whole life, while Christ was walking in perfect obedience to God's law on our behalf. Christ was our substitute, not only in his death, but also during his life--he lived a perfectly righteous life in our place and died the death we deserved. As a result, God can now justify those who trust in Christ because he credits Christ's righteousness to them, while transferring all their guilt to Christ; a guilt that has been fully paid for at the cross. God remains just and we receive pardon from sin and perfect righteousness.
Bridges and Bevington also emphasize the truth that the work of Christ's atonement is not a work that happens on the inside of us (although it is the grounds for God's work on our hearts), it is an external, finished, objective, historical work that has already fulfilled the law of God in our place. There is no work left to do; that is why faith is the instrument by which we receive the benefits of this great atonement.
In the latter two-thirds of the book, Bridges and Bevington take the reader through every major passage in the New Testament that speaks of Christ's work of representation and atonement, mining each text for precious truth. Major passages from the book of Acts, all of Paul's epistles (excluding Philemon), Hebrews, I Peter, I John and Revelation are examined and proclaimed. The final product is a Scripture saturated exposition of Christ's work for our salvation (there are over 1000 Scripture references in the book, and only five references from other sources). Well-written and throughly grounded in Scripture, this book is one that deserves to be read and reread.
I know how easy it is to be tempted to think that we, at some point in the Christian life, get beyond the gospel. When I oblige this temptation, I am usually led into paths of self-righteousness and spiritual frustration. On the other hand, when my mind is enraptured by the fullness of Christ's work on my behalf, I find what Christ calls, "rest for [our] souls" (Matthew 11:29) and power for obedience. For these and other blessings, I recommend this book to you.

and the book is not published by the author but by the

is a [type of religion]corporation.
There are many references in the book where you can go for further services--however, you might search out alternatives on the Internet, because there are individuals in what is called the "FreeZone" who can deliver services, too. If reading this book makes you want "more" then shop around.
In this Handbook for Preclears the dynamic principle of existence, which is "survive" is introduced. It is an important datum, because it is what all things have in common...it is the common demonator of existence. Of course, there are degrees of survival from bare to successful, but the datum gives one a way to look at things.
That isn't the only datum that is useful in this book. It isn't a good book for someone who just skims the reading material and doesn't throughally apply the exercises. That is why I rate it a 4 star instead of 5--...

Heart of A Soldier Review Date: 2008-07-03
Boarding a plane to Germany to attend her best friend's wedding, Stacy ignores her misgivings about flying and falls asleep soon after take-off. She wakes up misplaced, confused, and in 1963!
Military Police Sergeant Douglas Bradley, III, is going to re-enlist in the U.S. Army and hopefully attend Officer Candidate School. With less than a month to go in his current enlistment, he chokes down his dreams of attending college, and follows the family military tradition. His domineering father has made it quite clear that this is what is expected from him.
Brad is assigned to pick up a possible Russian spy at the airport. With no passport or identification, the woman's odd clothes and speech make her a prime suspect. When she starts spouting outlandish tales about being from the future, Brad figures she is either delusional or a very badly trained spy. The more he talks to her, the more he wants to believe her.
Torn between his duty to the Army, and his growing feelings for Stacy, Brad soon faces the choice of whether to do as his father wants and lose Stacy for good, or take the chance to follow his heart and possibly win the woman of his dreams.
Heart Of A Soldier has heart, body and soul. When all that Stacy has ever known is suddenly gone, she is placed in a time and situation where everything she says and does is analyzed, and suspect. To take the chance for a love of a lifetime and risk losing, or take the safe way and guard your heart from hurt, but never experience your full potential, either in life or love, is an age-old question that the author answers in a unique way. The choices that Brad and Stacy make are unforgettable and poignantly relevant, both in the 1960's and today.
Grab this book with both hands quickly--before time runs away from you. I loved it!

Terrific Romantic Time TravelReview Date: 2007-08-21
Stacy Webber should be working on her college research paper. Instead, she's taking time out from her part-time job and her full-time studies to head to Europe. Stacy really can't say no since her best friend, Cari, is getting married to Art, who's stationed in Germany, and she wants Stacy to be her maid of honor. Not only is Stacy's elderly neighbor, Dorothy, taking care of her apartment (including feeding her beloved cat) while she's gone, but she also gives Stacy her own special good luck charm to help with panic attacks during the flight. Stacy needs that charm more that she ever imagined when she wakes up after taking off from Jacksonville in 2006 and realizes that she's landed in West Germany in 1963!
Not certain if Anastasia Webber is a mental case or a spy, the US Army assigns MP Sergeant Douglas Lee Bradley III ("Brad") to what amounts to babysitting duty while they figure out what to do with her. Despite the fact that Stacy is the ultimate weird girl (according to Brad) and Brad looks like a handsome dork (according to Stacy), there's some definite chemistry happening between the two of them. Brad, who wants to be a writer, is also intrigued by Stacy's tales of the future and finds it increasingly difficult to dismiss them. On her part, Stacy realizes that Dorothy may be the key to everything that has happened and that she didn't meet Brad by accident.
What can I say about this book? There were so many aspects I enjoyed that it's hard to know where to start. Stacy and Brad were terrific characters both individually and together. In addition to a genuine budding relationship, there were really hot sex scenes between the two of them that were well done and integral parts of the story. Secondary characters weren't given short shrift, either--they were equally well-drawn and interesting.
There are so many medieval time travel books out these days that it was very refreshing to come across one that takes place in 1963 West Germany. Having lived on a US Army base in West Germany not too many years after this period (even though I was *very* young, naturally), I found little to fault with Ms. Hart's research and attention to detail. I also liked the fact that she didn't ignore or gloss over all of the time travel dilemmas. She may not have had answers or explanations for all of them, but she addressed them.
I enjoyed Ms. Hart's first book, LOVE LESSONS, with the only small caveat that I thought there were a lot of similar stories like it out at the time. The same can't be said about HEART OF A SOLDIER--it's enjoyable, well-written, and unique. I highly recommend it to readers looking for something entertaining and different.
* * * * *
As a total digression, I tend to pay a lot of attention to things like artwork and paper quality, but I guess I'm entitled to given the price of books these days. That said, this is another great cover for Ms. Hart.

Wow! What a treat!Review Date: 2006-05-19
Ms. Hart's grasp of the issues and tensions of the 1960s is amazing, and she used the setting of an army base in a divided Germany to full effect. Beyond the sensitive political situation, Ms. Hart proves once again that she knows how to write believable, likeable characters. Brad's conflict as he tried to determine whether Stacy is a clever spy or a crazy woman (because she absolutely CAN'T be from the future) is so well-written we feel and understand his frustration. The same is true with Stacy's terror in finding herself under guard in a decade about which she knows little.
With such deep emotion, how can Stacy and Brad's physical relationship be anything less than explosive? It is, in a way only Ms. Hart can accomplish.
I love reading Ms. Hart's books, and Heart of a Soldier is one I'll keep!
