This book is wonderful! I loved reading about how Michael Turner became an artist, his sad struggle with cancer, and the capturing of some of the best work and sketches that he did. I would recommend anyone who has a deep love for stories and comic books to buy this book to remember such a creative beautiful soul. The comic book world will not be the same without him.

A Must Read

Samuel Robinson's Wizard Of Bars is a brilliant must read about an almost ignored disease that continues to plague our society... Alcoholism. It is the true story about a young promising art student who fell victim to alcohol while still in High School. Mr. Robinson takes the reader on a very intimate journey into hell from beginning to end. Giving a detailed account of all his torment and suffering. He does so with harsh candid language, that never lacks warm humor and humanity. He begins by describing how "the monster-- his term for alcoholism" beckoned him suductively, while still a teen. How it slowly begin to rob him of his gifts as well as his self respect. While a homeless drunk he explains how he got his moneker. He was exceptionaly articulate and persuasive, and had the uncany ability to talk almost anyone into buying him a drink. As a result, his peers (other drunks)started saying he was casting a spell on his would be benifactors and that he must be a wizard. The Wizard of Bars. Mr. Robinson gives, what reads as an almost effortless simple but triumphant saga of his many (for lack of a better expression)adventures. I laughed, cried, cheered, and in the end soluted this brave author...... I knew Mr. Robinson personaly, and in one coversation with him years after the book had been published. He explained how, many incidents were left out of the book because he was too drunk to remember them. With a smile he told me how his sister once asked why he did not put the pork chop incident in the book. When he asked her what she ment, she described how one sunny afternoon he was being chased by the police. Because it was so warm, she (his sister) had both her front as well as her back doors open to cool the house... While being chased Mr. Robinson ranned through her front door past the living room into the kitchen grabbed two pork chops off the kitchen table and commenced eating them while running out the back door with the police still chasing him.

I spoke with Mr. Robinson a few weeks before he passed, I was visiting my mother in Baltimore, Maryland where I grew up with his children. Mr.Sam as we called him back then was always a generous and caring father figure for those of us who didn't have a father in the home.

He spoke of new projects he was working on, and of his paintings. At the time in his sixties he spoke with a vibrance and exitement that I truly admired, he will be missed.

There is nothing I could say about this remarkable and wonderful book that hasn't been said already. But I can say that this version that is illustrated by Ruth Robbins and Gail Garraty is simply special. The cover is beautiful and the illustrations inside are like wood cuts. It's a magical book and this version is the best representation of how special it is .

This book is simply amazing. It is a story about a quest to be returned to normal, helped by the Wizard of Op -- a wizard who uses optical illusions and effects to do his work. Some of the effects are so effective that when I checked this book out of the library as a child, many adults refused to look at certain pages, complaining of headaches. Now that I'm an adult myself, I want my own copy! Five stars to Mr. Emberly!

The problem with illustrating a classic with an expired copyright is that the book can get lost in the shuffle, especially if it's The Wizard of Oz or Alice in Wonderland. Every time a new edition of The Wizard comes out, there's about a 75% chance that I'll pass on it. Every time I do buy one I think, well, this will probably be the end of it. And then a new edition comes out--like this one. All one has to do is look at the cover to see that the reader is in for a fiendish ride indeed. Dorothy's a pretty little doll and Toto rides around on his little cart and doesn't move a muscle. The flowers and plant life look like things that would grow in Pepperland. The Scarecrow's face is drawn on with a red magic marker; the Tin Man looks like he was assembled from odds and ends one would find under the sink. The Lion doesn't look well at all and the Winged Monkeys look like bombers. The picture of the Wizard on page 204 resembles Donald Rumsfeld (but I suspect that's a coincidence; this book is hardly political.)
Well, I think you get the idea. This edition reminds me of those cute little furry yellow chick books by Sloane Tanen who are so full of angst.
A cautionary reminder--this book is the original text by L. Frank Baum. If you've only seen the movie, then some of these pictures may not make sense. Now for the teasers--both Glinda and the beautiful lady whom the Scarecrow sees as Oz during his private audience have the faces of two very famous ladies. See if you can figure out who they are.

Beautifully Illustrated - Timeless story.

Graham is brilliant, both in thought and design. This is a great interpretation of a wonderful story - as originally written - colorfully illustrated by the imaginative Graham Rawle. Experience Oz again and dance with delight as both Toto and Dorothy safely arrive back home. This book is a great size too, larger than I expected. This allows for simply fantastic illustrations of which there are 100. Great gift idea too.

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz
In 1900, Baum and Denslow (with whom he shared the copyright) published The Wonderful Wizard of Oz to much critical and financial acclaim. The book was the bestselling children's book for two years after its initial publication. Baum went on to write thirteen other novels based on the places and people of the Land of Oz. The book was heavily influenced by landmarks in Holland, Michigan where he would stay with his great-grandfather. In fact, the Yellow Brick Road was named after winding cobblestone roads in that town.

Two years after Wizard's publication, Baum and Denslow teamed up with composer Paul Tietjens and director Julian Mitchell to produce a musical stage version of the book. It ran on Broadway 293 stage nights from 1902 to 1911, and also successfully toured the United States. The stage version starred Dave Montgomery and Fred Stone as the Tin Woodman and Scarecrow respectively, which shot the pair to instant fame at the time. The stage version differed quite a bit from the book, and was aimed primarily at adults. Toto was replaced with Imogene the Cow, and Tryxie Tryfle, a waitress and Pastoria, a streetcar operator were added as fellow cyclone victims.

A timeless classic that should be read by all.

The favorite children's classic author of many and the favorite illustrator of many combine to produce a truly gorgeous book! It's a wonderfully surreal shock to see the familiar story with pictures that seem straight out of Tolkien!
