Like most of the Sabrina books I've read this one was outstanding! Sabrina has to do a science assignment that will help people improve their lives. She decides to ask her Aunt Zelda for advice, but she's working on a little project of her own, so she suggests that Sabrina visits the Wizard of Menlo Park and the Wizard is none other than Thomas Alva Edison himself! Poor Tom thinks that his inventions will never help people and feels really down, so Sabrina decides to cheer him up and takes him to the 21st century! Tom loves it so much that he doesn't want to go back to his time! The funniest part, for me, was when he saw Morgan with a green, mudlike mask, and asked "Have we actually made contact with Martians?" A must read for anybody with a good sense of humor, not only Sabrina fans :)

The Absolute BEST!!!

Old Empires has to be the BEST Forgotten Realms accessory ever made! It sheds light on the exotic southern lands and proud nations of Chessenta, Mulhorand, and Unther; lands that very much resemble Ancient Greece, Ancient Egypt, and Ancient Mesopotamia (Babylon), respectively. Their distinct culture, history, and civilization will win you over for sure!
I have been playing D&D since 1989 and I am proud to say that I have in my collection every Forgotten Realms book/manual/adventure/module/novel that has been published.
Let me tell you, NOTHING, I say NOTHING, compares to the endless hours of gaming enjoyment that I have experienced playing on material presented within the pages of Old Empires!
Ranging from background history, to city and social descriptions, to important people and characters, to the respective gods and pantheons, to adventure hooks and encounter tables, to magical items and artifacts, to new spells and monsters, this accessory has it all and more.
For other FR references/adventures, I STRONGLY recommend: the Dreams of Red Wizards accessory on Thay, the Moonsea accessory, the Ruins of Myth Drannor Box Set, and the Ruins of Zhentil Keep Box Set (they are Second Edition AD&D, out of print and it will take a bit of searching, but it's well worth it). For an updated edition of events in the Old Empires see the Third Edition Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting, which even though is quite expensive, it is still very useful to all FR fans!
In short, if you love Chessenta, Mulhorand, and Unther, try and get your hands on a copy of Old Empires. You will not regret it! Trust me on this one!

Still Ahead Of Its Time

Although OVER THE RAINBOW first appeared in print almost a decade ago, it continues to have no equal in the interdisciplinary study of religion, film, and popular culture. Nathanson's subtitle is THE WIZARD OF OZ AS A SECULAR MYTH OF AMERICA. He takes great care to define terms such as "secular" and "myth," as well as that elusive but crucial word "religion." Thus the reader is engaged in a stimulating conversation with theorists like Gregor Goethals, John Wiley Nelson, Clifford Geertz, Victor Turner, Robert Bellah, Roland Barthes, Elaide, John Dominic Crossan and many others around a familiar -- but via Nathanson, always surprising -- common text, the 1939 film THE WIZARD OF OZ.

While Nathanson himself is a great admirer of the film, the importance of this study goes far beyond that particular production; it sets a standard of scholarship that is unrivaled in the field.

I have used this book in undergraduate religion and popular culture courses at two colleges in the northeast and also at the University of Alabama. It has been exceedingly helpful in introducing students to the religious character that lurks just below the surface of secular American culture -- what some scholars have called the "implicit" religiosity of popular culture. The book has opened students' eyes to religion in places they least expected to find it (indeed, some students even expect to encounter the Devil in productions that emanate from Hollywood). But it has also introduced them to perennial religious themes and enduring problems in the study of religion, thereby demonstrating to them that the academic study of religion is not only fascinating, it is also fun.

This book has art and stories from some of my most favorte children's book creators--people like Madeleine L'Engle, Eric Carle, Paul Zelinsky, Chris Van Allsburg. All of them show how Oz entered their imagination and influenced them. You can really see how passionate about it they are--plus they donated their work (to support Reading Is Fundamental). It's a great gift for anyone who likes Oz.

Wizards, Sorcerors, and Bards take note
Helpful Votes: 18 out of 19 total.

This is a great supplement for anyone playing a wizard, bard or sorceror. It is also a great supplement if you'd like to make Magic a more interesting part of your campaign.

The prestige classes are, for the most part, pretty good and the inclusion of whole organizations behind them amkes them even better. The Feats are also good even though there are similarities with feats in existing products (independent development by the looks of it). They are well thought out and balanced well enough to avoid being either worthless or indispensible.

The best parts of the book though are the extended rules for bardic performances and the magical traditions. The extended rules allow for bards performing in modes other than music (like dance or poetry) and there are also rules for allowing the quality of performance to influence the bard's effects. With the new rules bards are finally more than wizards who happen to play guitar (or lute).

The magical traditions are similar to those in Path of the Sword (also by FFG) and allow arcane characters to acquire some feat-like bonuses to skills and abilities at the cost of some experience points. The traditions are a great way to make your wizard different than the wizard next to you.

The true measure of a book like this is excitement. As a player, I'm excited about the new options available to my favorite wizard (as soon as I convince my GM to let us use them). As a GM, I'm definitely going to include the traditions, feats, and bard rules in my next campaign. Some of the prestige classes will make it too.

THE FIRST OF THE AWARD WINNING "WILL HE MAKE IT SAGA"
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2006-06-06
Brian Wizard is one of a kind. He is an artist, a poet, a novelist, a song writer, singer, an award winning film maker, and most of all -- a Vietnam Veteran. If you want to discover what makes him tick and why he feels about things then a good place to start is with his first novel about his war--The Vietnam War. He thinly clothes his novel, "Permission to Kill," with his own experiences and memories. The Huey that he flew on is like the one in his story. The people he has in this tale are analogous to the many that he has known in his life and in combat. The realism of this novel is uncanny and will resonate with those veterans who actually were on flight crews in Nam.

His book which is the first of his trilogy featuring his lead character Willie Maykett who goes from civilian to a helicopter door gunner; it is not only a physical journey but one of the spirit as he deals with the emotions of war and friendship and loyalties. This book will grab you like no other Vietnam story has. The author uses good descriptive phrasing to paint a mental image of what is going on. You will feel as if you are flying with Willie and feel your own heart pounding a little louder as the action gets heavy.

This book will also educate you about the real world of those small aviation units that did the bulk of fighting in the war. What the author talks about is very close to the real thing and in some cases is a retelling of actual facts covered up as a work of fiction.

Reading this book should logically lead to discovery of the other two books in his series. The whole series of books was nominated for the 1998 Pulitzer Prize and the second book in this series was nominated for a Noble Prize. I cannot make any stronger case for reading a classic war book than that!

The Will He Make It Saga (trilogy) (contender 1998 Pulitzer prize)

Permission to Kill, 1985

Permission to Live, 1992 (Nobel Prize for lit. nominee 2000)

Back in the World, 1995
