Sorceress must protect her amulent from falling into the wrong hands. She has a mission and she ends up falling in love during her mission. A great book, I would give more details if I could remember them now after 10 years. A great strong female character who possesses magic abilities is always a great read for females.

This book took my breath away. NJW Mitchell has taken the Kingdom of Milara, added unicorns, and succeeded in writing an original, entertaining Milaran tale while transforming her most enigmatic character, Hannah War-Daughter, through adversity and danger. This the third in the series, and the author continues to surprise and delight.

"It's true then, Harry Potter has come to Hogwarts."
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-09-03
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, by JK Rowling, is a delightfully warming, mystical, and times frightening tale of a young boy who suddenly finds out there is much more to him than he ever dreamed!

Harry has spent ten years of his life in the grudging care of his Aunt and Uncle, living a miserable life. Then on his 11th birthday everything changes, when an enormous man, named Hagrid, turns up to inform him that he is a Wizard, and further more he has been accepted to learn magic at the school of Hogwarts.

Once Harry leaves his Aunt and Uncle, the world that he is introduced to by Hagrid is the stuff of magic and dreams. An enchanted ceiling, staircases that change about on you, portraits that move and talk to you, a talking hat, a teacher who turns herself into a cat, and a three headed dog are just a few of the things that await Harry during his first year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

A History of Free Climbing in America: Wizards of Rock

Valuable Contribution to the Library of Climbing Literature
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2003-03-25
Pat Ament obviously did a prodigious amount of research for Wizards of Rock, as it is a veritable encyclopedia of who climbed what, where, and when in America. It is eminently readable and entertaining, as well, although (as a reviewer in Climbing magazine noted) it isn't the sort of book you can sit down and read cover-to-cover. Furthermore, as is the case with Ament's biographies of Royal Robbins and John Gill, this book contains a treasure trove of interesting and rare photographs; two examples are (a) a photo of Warren Harding, Jerry Gallwas, Royal Robbins, and Don Wilson after their aborted attempt on Half Dome in 1955, and (b) a shot of Jim McCarthy leading a face climb in the Gunks that makes a gumby like me wonder how the heck he stayed on without sticky-rubber shoes.

Ament isn't shy about his own free-climbing accomplishments, which naturally makes one wonder if his motivation in writing this work wasn't partly to help secure for himself a place in the pantheon of 1960s-era rock "wizards." However, the fact remains that he was a cutting-edge free climber at the time, doing routes like Supremacy Crack and the Normal Route on the Slack in Yosemite when 5.11 was still a baseless rumor for most climbers. As the saying goes, when you can walk the walk, you can afford to talk the talk!

Nonetheless, Ament gives out plenty of credit where it is due, and, being from Colorado, he isn't completely fixated on climbs done in California, which truly makes Wizards of Rock a climbing history of the entire country.

This book gave me nightmares...
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-09-01
When I bought the first edition of this book as a kid back in the 1980s, I didn't know what I was getting myself into. The book was titled, "House of Hades," as evidently its American publisher thought using "Hell" was too harsh. Now the title "House of Hell" has been re-instated, and that's just what you'll have to go through in order to survive the gamebook without cheating.

For young readers, the story is chilling. You play as a person whose car breaks down on an unused, desolate road. The only refuge from the storm is a crumbling old house. Nobody appears to be home at first, but soon you are welcomed inside by the master of the house - the sinister Earl of Drumer and his butler, Franklins.

The Earl is seeminly a generous host, but what he doesn't tell you is that the house is a den of evil. Innocents who accidentally enter the house are quickly captured and sacrificed in occult rituals, and many of the rooms that await discovery are inhabited by gruesome creatures and sights guaranteed to send chills up your spine.

As a kid, it blew my mind that this gamebook escaped the notice of censors (especially with its unabashed usage of satanic symbols, names and instances of devil worship) and was published with just the title changed. Many of the names used in the book are the actual names of demonic entities that serve as the lieutenants of Hell. Much of the subject matter is quite disturbing...especially the descriptions of your fate should you fail to escape from the house.

Needless to say I was addicted to playing through the book as a teenager, but I had many sleepless nights as a result of doing so. Even as an adult, it's still nearly impossible to escape from the house.

It's a sinister little adventure not for the faint of heart, and I recommend it for more mature readers. If you're up for a challenging gamebook, and enjoy a good horror story, I highly recommend it.

Even better, read this book on a dark and stormy night with a flask of brandy...and avoid white wine at all costs!
