The Quest of a Lifetime

I had begun this series more than a decade ago, and foolishly allowed the books to go out of print before collecting them all. Elizabeth Boyer is a great spinner of plot and character development, even if the writing does not immediately reach out and snatch away your attention. It was because of her characters and the storyline itself, that I began a search for all of her books, taking the better part of a decade to find them all.
Finally reunited with the Alfar Wizard Thurid, the Scipling Warrior Leifr, and their fight against the original dark elves, I found myself unable to break from reading the entire series again.

A great series of books!

All the books in this series are a great read and worth the effort to find. Leifr and Thurid are delightfun characters. Similar to Hambly and Deitz.

Dungeons and Dragons Deluxe Dice Set

These are an excellent set of dice for someone who is in need of a set. They are green with some bluish highlights and the set contains 10 dice. The bag, black with red D&D logo, that comes with the dice is a very nice bonus and has plenty of room to expand your dice collection. The dice are a little on the light side,I would prefer them to weigh a little more. The set I bought rolled great right out of the bag and I will probably keep them with me for a long time.Hope this helps.

Ready to roll!

I really love this dice set. It is dark green with gold numbers, very well made. The little bag can carry the dice set and even more (the bag that comes with the multicolored D&D dice set is smaller). Just waiting to use it for the first time. Highly recommended!

One More Great Fantasy Book

Being the second one in the series, I had my doubts about this book.
The first opened so well with so many characters being introduced and being made interesting. This one did not disappoint. I read it in two days and the villain is one of the most evil I've seen. Sampson does a good job of handling a main hero that is a kender. I've read bad kender books (Kendermore) and this is not a worry.

One of the best points in the book is the underground maze and the main hero Tayt. SHe shone in this book as a spellflich and I cannot wait until the next read.

Overall, great second venture into the world of Dragonlance.

As General Elsdragon carries out his emperor's orders and makes new plans for the world, Tetsuo the champion suspects that evil is brewing in the maniacal assasin Lord Dark. What will become of the world?
Emperor's Fist is a great book that I would highly recommend to anyone with a lust for magic and monsters. A great storyline, awesome battle scenes, terrible and great magic, and fanstasticly descriptive landscapes make this book a great read. Check it out!

While technically not perfect, The Faith Of Legacy (odd title, but makes sense after you read the story) is a magnificent piece of storytelling. It's quite a breath of fresh air to a genre full of cardboard cutout stereotypical characters. These are real people, complex and flawed, cast into a lush world of fantasy. It's full of the usual wizards, magic, and monstrous beasts, but it is the characters who are the stars (as they should be) and you will find yourself identifying with them in ways that I've never before seen in a fantasy genre story. It has obviously been well thought out and great attention was paid to the details. There are a lot of twists and revelations as the story progresses that aren't forced or invented on the spot for effect. Everything seems preplanned and after finishing the book you'll find that it's part of a much bigger world and a much bigger plan than you originally thought.

Can't wait for the sequel

Brandon Begley has created a fantastic world of fantasy for his beloved characters to interact. I felt myself rooting for the character early on and yelling at him when he made stupid mistakes. Some chapters provide great comic releif from the action while others bring tears to your eyes. The villians are really evil and destructive, which stacks the odds against "Fireheart".

If you liked Lord of the Rings, The Chronicles of Narnia, or Xanth then you will like this book.

I only wish a map was included. I contacted the author and he provided me with a copy of his personal map, which cleared up some of my directionally challenged moments.

Jimmy Died a Broken Man
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-08-23
A very interesting book on an icon. Jimmy was a broken man, who felt that he had lost his self-respect, after he was fired by CBS. Jimmy was a sacrificial lamb in an early poltical correct world. Jimmy ultimately filed lawsuits for wrongful termination against CBS, but most were past the statute of limitations. He died in Las Vegas. His daughter and a friend that he met late in his life were his best friends in his last years. Reading between the lines Jimmy must have had a strained relationship with his wife. The book talks of his fight with Brent Musberger and how he hated Phyllis George's then husband John Y. Brown, even though Jimmy was the catalyst in them meeting. Jimmy had sued John Y. over money that Brown had owed him from a business deal, then withdrew the lawsuit because he felt it would hurt his on-air relationship with George. Again reading between the lines, it is interesting that neither Musberger, George, Irv Cross, or any CBS executives attended his funeral. Although Jimmy had three children who were buried in Las Vegas, he chose to be buried in his hometown of Steubenville, OH. I've only been in Steubenville once in my life, but if I get near there again I'll stop and see Jimmy.

An intriguing look behind the man who caused such controvery

More than a biography, this books reads like a novel--deftly written with narrative pinache. I entered the book with reservation since I didn't particulary care for the man, but left with an appreciation for him and the writer of the book. Ms. Wadsworth is a talented researcher, interviewer, and writer. She engaged me from the beginning and then guided me through the gaming jargon in the middle. By the end I felt I knew Jimmy the Greek personally.

dangerous!

Review Date: 2002-10-06
This is an excellent adventure. It is very different to others of it's era in that the PCs are expected to do a reconaissance mission rather than just kill everything in sight. The PCs have to map the lair of a tribe of Sahaugin who have occupied and altered the former home of a tribe of Lizardmen (who were met in the previous adventure, U2 - 'Danger at Dunwater'). The Sahaugin are planning to wipe out the town of Saltmarsh (module U1 - 'Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh') and the PCs have to map the lair in preparation for the assault later.

I played this game years ago with my cousin and we were just blown away how one room had like 64 Sahaugin in it each with claw/claw/bite attacks... We didn't know how we could possibly kill them all!

I recently found a module 'night of the shark' that was written for 2nd edition rules. With a tiny bit of tweaking it makes an excellent sequel to U3 and you can wipe out even more of the Sahaugin and pick up some cool loot. I highly recommend both modules.

Spectacular end to the classic Greyhawk trilogy

The final chapter in the Saltmarsh series continues the legacy of grim, dangerous adventure (for thinking players only!) with this well-plotted, intense foray into the lair of the Sahuagin! The overmatched heroes (levels 3-5) will find themselves in an horrific underwater adventure that plays more like an espionage movie than an AD&D adventure - flashing blades and spells will get them all killed in a matter of minutes. Instead, they need to skulk through the ruins learning everything that they can, in the desperate hope they might return with enough information for the hopelessly overpowered Saltmarsh militia to save them from inevitable destruction.

Excellent prequel

Review Date: 2004-06-04
"The Forging of the Dragon" explains why Vicia-Heinox came to be -- and is an excellent prequel to the three books Hughes wrote earlier about the One Land (and its various "fragments").

If you read "The Prophet of Lamath" or "The Power and the Prophet" or "The Wizard in Waiting," you're sure to like this book, as the few flaws in those books (mostly dealing with how Hughes dealt with his minor characters) have been rectified.

It's not a really highbrow book, by any means, but there is a solid moral and ethical basis that makes this book truly engaging.

Only authors I can think of that might be like Hughes are the current team of LaHaye and Jenkins -- but this is far less heavy-handed and far more lyrical to read.

Five stars. Highly recommended.

Barb Caffrey

Why doesn't Hughes get more credit?

Like the Pelewan series, this series is absolutely stellar. A little light, but you won't find a better told story than this series. Isn't that what is all about? If you like Lawrence Watt Evans, you'll love Hughes fantasy books. Just fantastic stories with believable and real characters.
