I have been reading books by Flannery/Hagberg for years now and it is amazing watching an author improve with time.
This one is one of his best and ensures that I will continue to read any more book he writes.

This book was published as the Post Cold War world was becoming a fact of life. Certainly, the story of die-hards in the KGB wanting to hang on to the old ways isn't exactly new, but it still makes for compelling human drama. A variety of characters is introduced, each of them truly human, in their own ways as opposed to being cardboard characters that are to be knocked down or left standing when the shooting starts.

It all started about 2 years ago when Chris gave a talk at my company to about 2,000 people. At the time I was lazy, obese, and didn't know the first thing about true health and well-being. I was just like most everyone else there, I thought all fat was bad, carbs were bad, and didn't even realize the PH imbalance due to my diet was what was causing my acid reflux. I used to lift weights when I was younger and I had done some dieting in college and lost a lot of weight, but it soon came back and I was nearing my all time high of 240 and 40 inch waists were only a few weeks away.

So after Chris spoke to us I had some really conflicting concepts, he made me question what I thought about eating healthy. I ended up buying his first book (Meal Patterning: Developing Healthy Nutritional Patterns for a Lifetime) and applied a few of his ideas from the seminar to my daily life...but for some reason I still didn't get around to reading the book for almost a year so not much really changed for me in that first year. Then I read the book and all of those seeds of knowledge that he had planted the year before began to grow and I couldn't believe how clearly I was starting to see things. Don't get me wrong there is no one thing that just clicked, we are talking about extensive diet changes, but if you make them a few at a time they are entirely attainable.

So over the last year I started riding bikes, lifting weights again and trying to eat healthy. I went from 240 in January to about 210 in October and then my weight leveled off for a few months. Then I heard that there was a new book out (On Target Living Nutrition: The power of feeling your best), so I got it as soon as I could and read it. This time around the seeds that started to grow when I read his first book (which is very much the same as his second) really took off. As I read a chapter about fat or protein or what we drink I actively applied that to my life. I now try to eat much closer to whole unrefined foods and try to make sure to eat 5-7 smaller meals a day and many of the other things outlined in the book. I am now down to 192 and falling fast and the great thing about this whole thing is that it is NOT A DIET...I am not hungry, I have lots of energy, I feel great. I simply replaced crappy low quality refined foods with balanced, high quality, whole foods that taste great and make me feel better than I have ever felt.

So I knew of these healthy foods and knew what they could do, but I am not a chef and neither is my wife so we really didn't know how to make meals with this new found knowledge. Then the cookbook became available! So now we just have to look in the section we want to eat (soup, sacks, breakfast, entrees, desserts) pick something that sounds good and make it. Since it is based on whole foods and some of the healthiest choices you can make all of these recipes are much better for you than just about anything you can get in a box or a restaurant, and they test better too. I can tell now when something is refined and low quality it doesn't taste as fresh or make me feel good afterwards. If you really want to know what meals are going to help you look and feel better get this book.

I no longer take my acid reflux pills, I don't get headaches anymore, I'm not always tired like I used to be, I need to buy new clothes because mine are too big instead of the other way around and my overall outlook on life has never been better, words can't say enough about how much this series of books has changed my life, it has been a 2 year process so far, and things just keep looking better.

There is nothing complicated about this book, all of the chapters are very well organized and easy to understand and relatively short and to the point. There is also a food target in the back of the book that gives great examples of poor, fair, good, better, and best food choices from fats, carbs, and proteins...the closer to the center of the target you eat the healthier you become I have done this and it is amazing. So if you really want to know how to be healthy and don't want any gimmicks or fluff this book is by far the best thing I have ever seen or heard on the topic. I hope you can benefit from it as much as I have and continue to do, it is my one and only reference when I have questions about food. I think about the only thing that would be better is if Chris were my own personal trainer so I could get constant feedback and updates on what he has learned. I really hope he does more books in the future to keep things updated.

Read this book and take some of the steps it outlines, you will not be disappointed.

I bought this book and was hoping it wouldn't be one of those very complicated diet books that I have so many of. The buzzword these days for diets is "it's a lifestyle change" - so many times I haven't been able to sustain those "lifestyle changes" because I bit off (pardon the pun) more than I could chew. Each time I thought "this is IT" - I get it now and now I've got the magic key to get healthier.

As Chris says, there is no magic key here. That's another thing I've heard before. What's nice about this though is he gave me enough nutritional knowledge in layman's language to really get the effects of my current lifestyle. I know intuitively why want to get healthy more clearly - I can imagine having more energy now in a way that I couldn't before because he gives lots of options for "baby-stepping" your way through this. Many of them are such common sense and things we have to do anyway.

One of those common sense options is breathing. We have to breathe anyway as long as we're living and it doesn't take any longer or cost anything to take deeper breaths. That increases our metabolism as well.
Such a simple thing. . . .I'm doing it anyway. . . . and so are you if you're reading this. So, take a deep one right now. . . see, doesn't that feel better!

It puts exercise, lifestyle and nutrition all together in simple layman's terms and takes out the overwhelm replacing it with sensible alternatives that you can choose based on whatever suits you.

Well done, Chris!! Thank you for a priceless addition to my library.

Wow what a fabulous read. Great action and sizzling sexual tension as Miranda Carrington flees for her life with a commanding stranger, Sandro, who saves her from death or worse at the hands of a viscous crime lord. These two are on the run, and not sure who to trust in a world of cross and double cross as the story races to a climax. Couldn't put it down, this one is a roller coaster ride from start to finish.

Miranda Carrington likely never cared for the song "Me and My Shadow". For her, the words had a different connotation. A shadow was her perpetual bodyguard that dogged her every step. Miranda was the free spirit, the youngest of the Carrington children, and ever since the death of Katrina, the eldest daughter of Senator Carrington, she'd been forced to live under the watchful eyes of her paid protector...the whole time itching for the elusive taste of freedom. For a fleeting moment, she thought she caught the wonderful feeling. In a blond wig, living in a small town in Portugal, she felt "normal"...
just like everyone else. Then he spoke to her shattering the illusion.

Alessandra Vellenti, heir the Vellenti Vineyards died five-years before, died in a horrible bomb-blast that claimed his two best friends. Now only Sandro exists. And Sandro is a man who does what he must. He does the balancing act upon the tightrope, so deep undercover he fears he may as well be dead as everyone believes him to be. A man serving two masters. He is sent by the "guys in the white hat" to protect Miranda Carrington. The son of General Viktor Zhukov was captured crossing from Canada to the US, and Miranda father claims he will stand trial for his crimes. Only Viktor sees Miranda as a pawn, a hostage to be traded for his son. Sandro has sent five years in hell trying to get close to Zhukov, and handing Miranda to the evil dictator would be the ticket.

Miranda is attacked to the handsome stranger who approaches her on that sunny afternoon. But soon, she discovers, in the same instant, her supposed freedom is a myth as she spots her bodyguard rushing toward her. Suddenly, he is gunned down and Sandro is pushing her to run. So begins a chase, with Sandro dragging Miranda across Portugal one-step ahead of those chasing them. Despite her growing desire for the dark and deadly Sandro, is he her savior or her capture?

Jenna Mills gives you a dancer on the razor's edge, in a pulse-pounding story, the first of the Carrington children's tales.

This book outlines in reader-friendly terms what is required to value, sell, purchase, or turn over to family or workers an engineering firm. The authors have years of experience from the standpoint of proper accounting experience and legal experience to coordinate these functions. It is a well written book--from the point of view of people in the engineering and architectural environment.

Fascinating Little Known History

Review Date: 2008-04-08
I read this book years ago and it has always stuck in my mind. I am glad to have found it again.

The story is fiction because it revolves around some Americans who supposedly found themselves in von Lettow's army. But the historical setting and many of the characters and events are real.

When WWI broke out, the small number of German troops in German East Africa (now Tanzania) rallied and trained the local tribes and the resident German farmers into a guerilla force to resist the much larger British army to the north in Kenya. The book details some of the tactics used, as well some remarkable inventiveness.

Paul von Lettow, the commander, had an ensemble of talent in his army's baggage train that proved very handy. There was a German fellow named Ersatz who invented a lot of things out of local ingredients. (Because the Royal Navy pretty much owned the seas, there was no resupply for the German soldiers in Africa.) Everyone knows what "ersatz" means now - but this campaign is where the concept got its name!

Like a medieval army, this one had no formal logistical support. It relied on many camp followers, including women and children, to keep the army fed and supplied. Many of these womens' efforts and what life was like for them in the field are described.

One incredible tale told of an Imperial Navy vessel marooned in the Rufiji Delta. Some of the German farmers had domesticated African elephants, and used then to haul guns off the ship up the slopes of Kilmanjaro to shoot at the British army. It sounds highly implausible, but Stevenson gives evidence for many of the points in his story at the end of the book.

This is one of those books where you learn a lot while reading a great story. Stevenson claims that von Lettow knew that the Germans couldn't hold East Africa, and that he felt he was just laying the groundwork for an African country free from future British rule. Whether this is true or historical revisionism I don't know, but the Tanzanian people did build a statue honoring von Lettow in Arusha several years later.

"Ghosts of Africa" is a great title, as it refers to an incredible story that not many people know - at least in the USA. It is the reverse of "the African Queen" - and far more interesting!

An incredible adventure based on a true story

This novel really captures a lost part of Africa. It details the German resistance in Africa during WWI. The germans were led by german noble named Paul Von Lettow. For four years they tied down nearly half a million british troops with barely 12,000 of there own. Von Lettow wrote the book on guerilla warfare although he is largely forgotten today. The book contains a great cast of characters in addtion to Von Lettow, many of whom were based on real people. The book has plenty of action and romance. I highly recommend it.

I agree with the authors review. They always tell the story of the Army or the Marines after they land on the beaches, but little has been written in book or script form as to how the Hell they got to the beach's and crossed rivers. Mr Witter is to be commended on collecting and publishing the Naval Amphibious Force side of the story. They have been ignored for to long.

This is a group of personal narratives of veterans of the US Navy Amphibious Force of WW II. These are the bluejackets who stood up under fire in the assault waves carrying the soldiers to the beach and without hesitation went back for more. This has the kind of first hand detail seldom found elsewhere or in news accounts on how it actually was to trim ship, beach, and handle the Landing Ship, Tank (LST) and the small ones which they carried along. LCVPs, LCVP(R), the Higgins boats developed by the Marine Corps for beach assault, that were so highly praised by Eisenhower LSTs are flat bottomed so they can be run up on a beach to unload. They are shaped like a bathtub in cross section, have a high freeboard and a shallow draft; you can readily imagine how they roll unmercifully in any sea condition above a gentle breeze. No gracefull hull configuration like that of the Iowa class of battleships, the last of their kind in service. LSTs have proved to be much more durable than first planned. Many "soldier" on in tropical backwatrs. (You think I maybe should say "sailor" on? No such expression in my lexicon! :o))
The sailors picked up their LSTs just downstream from Pittsburgh, Pa, sailed down the Ohio to the Missisippi and thence via the Gulf and the Atlantic to Britain. After the June Normandy invasion many LSTs sailed to Italy and North Africa for the Southern France invasion. Then some went around to the Pacific and landed at Leyte, Luzon, and Okinawa, and went to China after the war.
All of this trave; in a high sided, flat-bottomed. prone to rolling, and slow tub. One narrative described the crossing of the Rhine River, for which cosl shovel shaped LCMs were trucked across Belgium and France into Germany. They also helped assemble the pontoon bridges on which the Army crossed.
This is one small part of the huge story of how the personal efforts of millions combined with American industrial might, training and organizational skills enabling the United States to project its national power clear aroound the world. Nothing like this massive effort has been seen since. Even the great British Navy needed to be equipped with US built landing craft and landing ships, being unable to turn them out in necessary quantities.

One of the best books on the subject of terrorism and intelligence "Still the Target" is a very interesting read. The authors are well-respected authorities in the intelligence arena and come with impressive credentials. Theodore G. Shackley retired in 1979 from his position as the CIA's Associate Deputy Director for Operations where he was responsible for worldwide foreign intelligence collection, clandestine counter intelligence, and covert action. Richard A. Finney retired in 1978 from his position as an operations and training officer for the CIA. Together they have produced a book that examines the current world situation as it relates to terrorism and crime. They examine the use of bombs and why they have become the weapon of choice for terrorists, the use of guns, and other common weapons, ambush techniques and avoidance, kidnapping and similar crimes, and a whole host of other topics of importance to international travelers. Through the use of various real-life illustrations they bring to life the problems, mistakes, and successes of terrorism prevention and offer various ways to keep yourself as safe as possible. This is a recommended read for anyone interested in terrorism and personal security.

I enjoyed the work from a number of angles. First, Charles Frontenay had to have burned the midnight oil on his extensive research into the Civil War in general, and this particular focused location/period especially. The merging time line approach is difficult to handle for many, but Charles pulled it off adeptly. Keeping the characters believable instead of heroic was to my liking as well. The story line prevented much by way of predictability, but not so much that it was unpleasant or confusing. All in all, a very good read, especially for people interested in this historical time frame.

TARGET GRANT, 1862 is a fast paced time travel thriller. Harry Vick, a present day Southerner believes the South should have won the Civil War. He assumes that had General Grant of the North been killed, the course of this country's history would have been changed so that the South had won. Vick finds a way
to go back in time with an M1 rifle to assassinate Grant. This is the novel form of a short story Fontenay wrote that ran in ANALOG a few years ago. Fontenay has expanded the premise and given the ending a twist that adds to the work.
TARGET GRANT, 1862 is a great "what if " novel.
