Easy to read!Review Date: 2007-04-02
An excellent introductory book!!!Review Date: 2006-05-05
It's an excellent book to start learning about cancer. It's well updated and includes all the recent advances. It could have included some extra stuff in my opinion, but anyway it's a great book. I like the "future therapeutics" part at the end of each chapter.
An Introduction to the Biology of Cancer - and MoreReview Date: 2007-01-11
First, as to technical level: This is very much what one expects in an undergraduate science text, with lots of section headings, lots of diagrams, and lots of boxes highlighting important points. If, like me, you're a non-student and non-scientist but interested in the subject, you'll probably find it very readable. You'll need to have some experience of reading diagrams in which symbols (squares, circles, etc.) represent molecules interacting with each other. And you'll have to be comfortable reading books with plenty of technical language. The terms specific to cancer biology should be no problem since they are well-explained and the terms that are in the glossary are printed in red in the text. You won't need to know anything about the chemistry involved in the molecular interactions (nothing about hydrogen bonding or redox, for example).
Some single-celled organisms can simply grow and divide as fast and as long as their food supply allows. Those that live in colonies must have chemical signals to regulate each cell's growth and activity. Mammals, being enormously more complex, need much more sophisticated communication between cells. That means, of course, that there are many things that can go wrong and many mechanisms to fix things that go wrong. And therefore, there are many things to be considered when diagnosing and treating cancer. Pecorino chooses particular examples to explain general principles.
First, a cell normally doesn't divide until a signal from outside sets off a chain of events that leads to division. An error in this chain, caused by an abnormal protein, can cause the cell to divide without the external signal. Pecorino chooses epidermal growth factor (EGF) to show the working of such a chain. When a cell does start to divide out of control, there are mechanisms which try to stop the reproduction, or to kill the cell. Pecorino focuses mostly on one molecule, called P53, which is involved in a number of such mechanisms and is abnormal in a majority of tumors, including mine. Most cells are fastened in place, so it takes a further abnormality for them to break loose. Since most cancers are caused by abnormal or inappropriately expressed genes, DNA repair and regulation are important. Here, Pecorino mentions the BRCA genes, which turn up often in articles about breast cancer. These are major topics, but there is much more than I can mention in an Amazon-size review.
So many genetic flaws don't show up all at once; a cancer is the product of evolution within one body. This is implicit in Molecular Biology of Cancer, but it is more developed in another book, Darwin in the Genome. (See my review for more info; click above on "See all my reviews".)
Given that there are so many molecular systems involved in cancer, one can see why there are many points at which drugs may inhibit or kill cancer cells. Pecorino points out a number of these. She even flags many these with red target icons, symbolizing potential drug targets. Perhaps by the time a student gets to be a researcher, most of these will be passé - a lot of people are working hard on them -- but her aim is to teach them how to spot potential target molecules and interactions and I think she succeeds.
Cancer can be of interest to people who aren't affected by it because, by showing what happens when things go wrong, it gives new insight into how these systems work in general. For those interested in developmental biology, it shows what happens inside a cell in response to a signal whereas most of the books I've read just mention the cellular interactions. Pecorino also gives examples of how a large variety of molecules may be created by mixing and matching a much smaller collection of simpler molecules or domains; this modularity is important in evolution.
So this book will be of interest to a variety of readers for a variety of reasons. Pecorino is particularly interested in students and hopes that some will be inspired by this book to take up cancer research. I second that and I hope that some will find metastatic prostate cancer to be a worthy field.

a great readReview Date: 2008-08-13
wonderful descriptions of places, people and situations you feel like you are really there sharing in the excitement and fear. Can't wait for book 3.
A sequel that is as exciting as the first book, if not better!!Review Date: 2008-08-08
`Tank`, (John Tankersley) and the terrosit taskforce have to deal with the kidnap of a Saudi Princess from a university in Chester, England. She is taken from a summer ball on a floating riverboat venue, which is blown up to cover up the kidnap plot. The blame is put square at the doorstep of Islamic terrorists, however all is not what it seems. The plot twists through every chapter at breakneck speed, completely unput downable !! The nefarious terrorist leader Yasser Ahmed is located in the mountains of Daghestan, and Tank and the taskforce have to make a secret operation incursion into the Soviet Block to try to bring the terrorist to task. The taskforce characters are becoming like old friends as the `Soft Target` trilogy reaches its second edition. Although the books follow a common thread, they also stand alone as novels. Seldom are sequels better than the first book, but I`m hard pushed to say which one was the better read, one thing is for certain, if you read the first book then you will read this one, and the third one cannot be published quickly enough for me. Conrad Jones is currently sitting as my number one thriller writer, without a doubt.

Good starter for five, 30 April 2008
By Michael Watson "skirrow22" (Elland, England) - See all my reviews
A new author, a current terror topic and a fast-moving storyline. As a debut novel, the author has managed to create a scenario, mainly set in the UK which conveys to the reader just how easy it would appear to be to put in place a plan to hit 'soft targets' to cause maximum injury to innocent people.
That his team of anti-terrorist members deals with these so-called 'freedom fighters' in as harsh a way as possible seems a reasonable and appropriate response! The body count is enormous and perhaps glossed over a little too easily but, nontheless, I enjoyed the book and hope that the author can develop his characters as we progress through the next stories he has lined up for us.
I believe there are to be three books featuring this elite team. I look forward to the next.
I couldn't in all honesty knock off a star for the terrible proof-reading within the book but it does rankle when you're trying to follow the story and basic editing mistakes crop up. I did, at first, think I'd bought an uncorrected proof but apparently not! Help other customers find the most helpful reviews

Balanced and entertaining, 16 May 2008
By Melad (Sheffield) - See all my reviews
As a practicing Muslim I`m sometimes deeply ofended by the number of books being written about radical Islam. This book however is brilliantly balanced, it tackles the root causes of terrorism, the formation of the Middle East, the partition of Pakistan and the trouble that has raged ever since. The book is packed with well researched information that is weaved into a very addictive story line. Well done Mr Jones, I was most pleasantly surprised. To real, 21 Jan 2008
By Mr. Stanley T. Jones (Brighton UK) - See all my reviews
I always like fiction that has an element of factual information. The author has an in depth knowledge of the Islam situation, and states this from a number of perspectives. It results in a fascinating in-sight into the attitude and possible causes of the tension between Islam and the western world. The Anti-terrorist characters are authentic and the loci different from the norm -10/10. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews

A Williams Holyhead, 24 Jan 2008
By Mr. A. J. Williams (Holyhead UK) - See all my reviews
I bought this book by chance based on the subject, it is a well researched well written book, and a very good read. It is the only book I have read that I can remember recently that can really be described as a" page turner". I would recommend it to anyone, and am very much looking forward to the next part of the story. The author obviously has a great interest in the background of terrorism, and this results in a detailed picture which makes the story facinating. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews

Great debut novel, 2 April 2008
By Red (Aberdeen) - See all my reviews
I think was a good debut novel from a new author. I found each chapter left you wanting to know what happens next which a skill in itself. The main character Tank has plenty of milage in him I think. It reminded me of a Jack Reacher type character, if you like that type of story. The manuscript was a little rough but the book quality is excellent. I have seen this in Waterstones and Borders books for sale at £13.99 which is pricey for a paperback, but thats not a problem for us Amazon shoppers. Great read 10/10 debut. Conrad Jones, Biography.
Conrad Jones is a 42 year old Author from the Welsh port of Holyhead, who lives in Warrington, Cheshire. He worked in senior management at McDonalds Restaurants Ltd from 1989-2002. On march 23rd 1993 he was managing the Restaurant in Warrington`s Bridge St when two Irish Republican Army bombs exploded directly outside the store, resulting in the death of two young boys and many casualties. Along with hundreds of other people there that day Conrad was deeply affected by the attack, which led to a long term interest in the motivation and mind set of terrorists.
Later years turned his focus to tensions in the Middle East and beyond. The rise of Islamic Extremism and its determined Mujahideen fighters is the focus of Soft Target, which was published and is selling well despite not being represented. The title and the Author have been featured in six regional newspapers, and three BBC Radio interviews.
The Soft Target novels are based around a character called John Tankersley, nicknamed Tank. He is the lead agent of the Terrorist Task Force, which is an elite Special Forces group tasked with wiping out terrorist attacks internationally. One novel is selling but is still the property of the Author. Soft Target Two is now published, and three has been completed, and is in the publication process. Conrad feels that `Tank` has any number of potential plots left, and will have completed volume four before Christmas,2008.
In June 2007 the author and his wife, Ruth were enjoying an extended holiday in Florida, USA. The trip was interrupted by the shocking news from home that their home had been burgled, and everything had been stolen. At that time the author was self employed, and his work van, tools, and essential machinery had been lost to the thieves. The UK at the time was suffering from severe flooding in York, and the South West, making insurance claims extraordinarily difficult. Rendered unemployed Conrad and his wife took the gamble of a life time, and agreed that the author should start writing `Soft Target` while they were still abroad. Bearing in mind that the author had never written so much as a letter for years, by the time they arrived back in the UK eight chapters had been penned by hand. Twelve months later three novels have been completed, and a fourth is in progress. More to the point its readers are enjoying the novel !!

It was startling to learn that Islamic terrorists in Iran, Syria, and other places, were practicing the simulated flying of large airplanes into skyscrapers in the 1980s. Sure this book and its facts are fictitious!
The book refers to numerous Islamic terrorist organizations indoctrinating expendible youths with the glory of suicide and dying for the Jihad. The fact that Arafat has said that he "would be willing to expend 65 Palentinian lives to kill one Israeli" is a prime example of the glory and emphasis placed on dying for the cause; of course, when it is not he who has to die. The incessent bombing and murdering of Jewish and other infidels, more than 10 years after the book was written, further substantiates the fictional aspects of this book.
The book clearly describes the incarnation and growth of the "axis of evil" and the people who orchestrate the diabolical show. There can be no doubt that the axis consists of Iran, Iraq, and North Korea, as has finally been attested to by our politicial leaders. Of course there are the "axis of evil" supporters in Europe, the US, Libya, Syria, Yemen, Jordan, Morocco, Algeria, Egypt, Djibouti, Eritrea, Sudan, Chad, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malaysia, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Afghanistan, adnauseumstan, and frankly, I'mtiredofthemallstan. The capture of a shipload of arms from Iran to the Palestinians and the selling of SCUD missiles to Yemen by North Korea are excellent examples that the axis of evil is alive and well and living on planet earth.
Wake up America. Turn the TV off. Read, educate yourself. Find out what our enemies are saying and doing. This book is a good place to start. It's so out of date, it's scary!
EARLY WARNINGS OF TERRORIST ATTACKS ON U.S. SOIL BEFORE 9-11Review Date: 2006-01-21
Since the late 1980s, Yossef Bodansky had been Director of the Republican Task Force on Terrorism and Unconventional Warfare of the United States. He worked very closely with Congressman Bill McCollum (R-Florida), Chairman of the Task Force to develop plans for effectively dealing with terrorist attacks on American interests domestically and overseas. McCollum wrote the Introduction to TARGET AMERICA: TERRORISM IN THE U.S. TODAY. In it he concluded: "It is only by publicly exposing this threat to America and through educating our citizens that we can stop the terrorists from carrying out their nefarious plans and protect our freedoms."
The Task Force on Terrorism and Unconventional Warfare was formed because Republicans believed, president Bill Clinton's administration was not doing enough to protect the United States against threats on American soil by Islamist terrorists. The first terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in 1993, master-minded by Sheikh Umar Abd-al-Rahman seemed to justify the Republicans' concerns.
TARGET AMERICA (aka "Target the West") is well organized into eight chapters, beginning with Chapter 1 "Radical Islam Against the U.S" and concluding with Chapter 8 "Islamist Terrorism in America (II)". More than fifty pages of notes and references support the arguments presented in this book. The section, "The New Islamist International in America," tells us:
" ... between March and December 1992, the Islamist terrorist network conducted actual preparations for a major terrorist strike against the Great Satan. Initially, the bulk of the work was done clandestinely by expert terrorists, both in New York and overseas, who conducted a survey of potential targets. Specific planning, such as bomb design, followed.
" ... They took advantage of the main lesson learned from the Kikumura operation, namely, that one can get everything in the U.S. A major sabotage operation can be carried out with little or no need for smuggling tremendous amounts of explosives, especially the tell tale plastiques."
In TARGET AMERICA, there is little mention of Osama bin Laden. This was corrected by Bodansky in 2001 when he wrote his more narrowly focused, BIN LADEN: THE MAN WHO DECLARED WAR ON AMERICA. But lately, President George W. Bush said that he didn't have adequate warnings of the 2001 attacks on American soil. The facts are that he had a plethora of warnings by the Director of the Republican Task Force on Terrorism, outlined in TARGET AMERICA.
Bodansky's book on bin Laden came out in September 2001, just ten days after nineteen Islamist skyjackers executed their spectacular suicide attack on the United States. Possibly, one reason bin Laden could so quickly be targeted by Bush after the September 11th attacks is from the work of Bodansky's Task Force. Eight years earlier, Bodansky wrote in TARGET AMERICA:
"By the end of the (1980s), Iran and the U.S. were, in effect, involved in a very intense, yet secret, war in the Persian Gulf and Lebanon, where Syria was actively involved. ... The three phases of the Iranian-Syrian long-term terrorist strategy were as follows:
1. Use of local expendable assets to carry out operations while creating problems for the local security forces;
2. Quality attacks by operatives already on-site, living off and gaining operational support from the locally-based dormant networks.
3. Spectacular strikes, including suicide attacks, by specially placed expert terrorists in order to demonstrate the global of the Iran-led Muslim Bloc and to avenge the Muslim world ..."
Bodansky argues in TARGET AMERICA that the 1993 truck bomb attack on the twin towers of the World Trade Center was the opening skirmish in the Islamist terrorists' war inside the United States. America's leaders can expect more, larger and protracted battles. The small group of New Jersey-based Islamist terrorists led by Abd-al-Rahman were apprehended and punished for their crimes. But those with responsibility for America's security didn't clearly communicate to the rest of us that this terrorist cell was merely one platoon in Al Qaeda's widespread international army.
Republican and Democratic leaders could have and should have issued clear warnings to the American people about imminent attacks on us by Islamist suicide platoons. Yet the Bush-Gore debates during the 2000 American presidential election failed to raise the issue of terrorism on United States' soil. This issue needed to be publicly debated long before the September 11th attacks forced Bush to declare his "war on terrorism." TARGET AMERICA concludes:
" ... Islamists are convinced that they are on the verge of a marked escalation in their fateful Jihad aimed at demonstrating the Islamists' reach and announcing the opening of a new escalatory phase in their war against America.
"The [1993] bombing in New York was merely a prelude to a new terrorist campaign in which America is the target."
Well, that was what Bodansky warned us about in 1993. Now, we all know what happened after 9/11 and how an aging Yale cheerleader turned failing president managed to create an historic career out of it with his "war on terrorism."
