This book is for beginners. Just for beginners. It has lots of "nice" positions but it's _too_ easy and obvious. I didn't like the comments on each problem - sometimes Bruce is very ironic and looses the _real point_

An excellent exercise for honing and beginning chess skills

Bruce Pandolfini shows his true abilities as a chess coach and player by writing this introductory/continuation of the ancient game chess. The book covers every square of the board, going over such battle tactics as the more obvious skewer, fork, basic trapping, to the subtler pin and Zugswang. He shows and teaches the player how to recognize the piece to be exploited, and how to do it quickly and visciously, leaving your opponent floundering in your mighty wake. I highly recommend it as a starting point for anyone wanting to beat their opponent.

great for 1000-1500, good for 1500-1700, not for 1700+

Review Date: 2005-05-16
I would like give this book 4.5 stars.

It has 200+ puzzles, basically. Majority of them are good
for 1000-1500. 1500-1700 rated people will benefit b/c
of the practice, b/c there are definitely some tough ones.

negative point:

this idea of "target" really does not work evry well
in real life. These should have been presented in
different context. e.g. What is white's best move?
Then, each could have been explained in terms what
should have tipped off the reader to the break
through tactics.

It still deserves 4.5 stars b/c they are so many
to practice with and they are all good ones (some
are easy, sure, but not all).

If you are over 1700, most likely you will not benefit
from this.

Too Bad and Basic...

This book is just too basic to be of any real use... The comments that Bruce makes are also a bit annoying on a few problems etc... Also I think they fail to capture the real point sometimes as well. If your rated about 800 and wanna make it to maybe 1000. Thats about as far as this book can take you at best to be honest. Try a book like The Mammoth book of Chess, or Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess. Just to name to starter books that would help you more. If you wanna be another stepping stone for someone. Then by all means invest and waste your money in this book.

Antimatter in Amsterdam

Review Date: 2008-08-11
This Target book is a novelization of the Doctor Who serial "Arc of Infinity", which was first broadcast in 1983. This book was published the same year and features the Fifth Doctor, Nyssa and Tegan.

The Doctor, after repairing the audio for the TARDIS monitor, is attacked by an antimatter being. It seems it was trying to merge with him, which means trouble, because matter and antimatter coming into contact would lead to serious destruction. The Time Lords find out about this and force the TARDIS back to Gallifrey, where they plan on killing the Doctor and severing the link with the antimatter being. They soon discover this is all part of somebody's plan, someone the Doctor has encountered before...

Meanwhile, on Amsterdam, a pair of travellers encounter something horrible in the crypt of a mansion...

For me, it was a very quick read, and Terrance Dicks describes the story well. I really would like to watch the TV version to see the ending, which I enjoyed most of all. There's a little too much pondering about on Gallifrey for my liking, but it's all right. It's a reasonable addition to any Doctor Who book collection.

Good adaption, decent story, hooray!

A good old Target Novel. I love how quick everyone is to kill the Doctor in the "enlightened" society that is Gallifrey. I hate to admit it, but the best part is the last bit. A chase around Amsterdam between the Doctor and Omega in the style of Benny Hill finishes this literary masterpiece. Chalk another one up for Terry Dicks!

Evil Time Lord

Next up in the never ending stream of evil doers who wish to conquer the universe is none other than a Time Lord. The Doctor must again save the day, and he has Nyssa as his companion in this one. Tegan, a prior companion also makes an appearance and at the end it seems as though she will also be again joining the Doctor in his travels.

The Doctor finds himself summoned to Gallifrey and sentenced to death for a crime he had nothing to do with. After getting that little problem taken care of, he must stop a banished Time Lord from stealing the Matrix. All in a days work I guess when you are the Doctor.

A well paced book and a quick read.

Strange plot from Amsterdam

Review Date: 2001-01-01
A shadowy meeting on Gallifrey, backpackers seeking cheap accommodation in Amsterdam, and a strange force invading the TARDIS mark the beginning of a story which sees the return of an old foe and substantially threatens reality as we know it.

This story is the first of the twentieth season of Doctor Who, and like every story of this season features something from the Doctor's past. This story acts as a sequel to one of the stories in Doctor Who's tenth season, but sadly an imperfect sequel.

Like any story set, to whatever extent, on Gallifrey, it looks backwards at the Time Lords history. I certainly welcome the return of Borusa, the Doctor's old teacher, who is now President of the Time Lords. Borusa is a very strong character (and events in 'The Five Doctors' have always seemed out of character to me) who enlivens the stories in which he appears.

The story is interesting enough, but could have been better if it was either no a sequel to an earlier story, or if it had been more consistent with that story. There is also some strange physics, which seems largely to justify setting the Earth portion of the story in Amsterdam. Terrance Dicks adaptation is quite straightforward, but it is a pity he didn't try to include additional bits to make it more consistent with the earlier story.

Omega, one of the greatest Time Lords, was believed to have been destroyed by the matter/anti-matter explosion in The Three Doctors. But suddenly someone has stolen the Doctor's bio=print from Gallifrey and the Doctor is forced to return to his home planet to save himself and the Time Lords. A good adventure that shows us a rare early glimpse at Gallifrey.

I wanted to learn about guns and shooting sports.
I thought to start with a .22 cal weapon, rifle or pistol, because it appeared that .22 ammunition was the cheapest, most available ammo by far. I didn't know whether I would like the shoorting sports.
This book was an EXCELLENT introduction. Starting with the basics of history from a gun and ammunition point of view. What an education in basics of ammunition in general and the .22 LR Rimfire and its like (.22 WMR, .17 HMR, etc). You learn WHY a rifle has to account for sights 1.5 inches above the muzzle center and so much more.
The author's experiences and recommendations are just like sitting down with your Uncle who was a former instructor in the Marines... For the uneducated, this book will help you look at ammunition effectively, and guns - various rifles and pistols - with new found understanding. I hope this author has done a book for some other calibers so I can get the same understanding once I get some more experience with my 10/22 rifle.

This book has almost the same title as one written by John Lachuk and published in 1978. Since I consider John Lachuk's book to be the best written on this subject, it makes for a good reference and source to compare to. In my opinion James House has done a very good job writing this book. It is sort of an updated version of the 1978 book. Very informative with lots of information on past and current 22's with test firing results. There isn't an area that James House doesn't touch on. Even though he has written other articles and books on weapons, I did not know of Mr. House before this book. Don't let that fool you. This book is well researched, well thought out, well laid out and well written. It might not overtake John Lachuk's book as the best on the subject, but I'd hate to have to live on the difference. Highly recomended.

An excellent all round review of what modern rimfire sport shooting is all about if you are interested in getting aquinted with that, and I would have given it 4 stars if it gave a more comprehensive review of past rifles and handguns manufactured since the cartridge evolved. But it succeeds 100% as an introduction for laymen starting out.

I am an avid .22 rimfire fan. I've bought books on the .22 rimfire years ago and have been waiting for something more current. Good book covering some of the .22's out there and ammo testing along with info on the new .17HMR and .17M2 calibers. The author repeated himself over and over across several chapters the same information. A lot of the photos were reprinted across several chapters. This book could have been about half the size if the author had not repeated information throughout the book. Most of the guns covered in the book were from the author's own collection and did not really cover the various manufacturers offerings. Several good chapters on sighting in and ammo ballistics but overall I was disappointed in this book. If you are looking for a "little new" information on the .22 rimfire there is some here. If you are looking for more in depth information you will have to wait until someone else comes along and writes a better book.

For background, I am a rifleman of sorts as well as a ballistician.I also have a Ph. D. James E. House has a Ph. D in Chemistry and his extensive technical background is evident all through this work. This book is encyclopedic in scope and I have found no significant errors in it. I would observe that he does not discuss nor explicate ballistics tables from which ballistic coefficients are derived. I would have preferred that at least some of his more accurate rifles were tested using ten round groups at 50 yards but his use of five round groups is reasonable (multiply five round group size by 1.414 to estimate ten round group size.) I also wish he had devoted (more) attention to rimfire bench rest competition. This may be a bit more detail than the beginner will wish but for anyone with a serious interest in rimfire cartridges and shooting, this book is a must-have. Doc D.

I could not put this book down, the charactors were so believable
and the descriptions of true events that lead up to the fictional ones
are amazing. The reader will enter the minds of men who though have deep
belief's have the wrong way to carry them out. It will also give the
reader a chance to enter the world of the anti terrorist groups and how
they prevent terrible events from ever taking place.
Even if you do not like this kind of book you will not be able to put it
down. I can see a best seller and an oscar winning feature film in the future.

I bought this book in an amazon deal, along with the second book in the series, and Lee Child`s Nothing to Lose. I didnt finish the latest Reacher novel, but I was kept awake all night reading Soft Target, it is a real page turner in the true sense of the word. Each chapter ends on a cliff edge, forcing you to read on to find out what happens. The author has written the book from the terrorists point of view, adding many facts into the narrative which strengthen the characters and make the reader emphasise with their plight, not agree with their actions of course but it does give you the reasons behind why each man made his choices. It uses real scenarios to describe how and why each individual is where he is in the novel, and I have to applaud the author for this.
The action is kept going at lightening speed all the way through the book with more than a tadge of suspense to keep you on the edge of your reader`s seat. This guy is a great thriller writer, if you like action thrillers then give this a whirl. Excellent.

I agree with the previous reader. I am 33 pages into this book and I can't enjoy the story for all the errors, typos, and bad grammar. If there is another edition that is readable, I would like to buy it. This is my favorite genre and I bought the book because I read a review that said if I like Lee Child (my opinion: he and Harlan Coban can do no wrong), I would like Conrad Jones. However comma I can't read this the way it is. There should have been a warning to let people know that this is an unedited, unproofed work. So far, the most glaring error is that one of the terrorists drinks, smokes, gambles, and solicits prostitutes. That's just so against the Muslim religion that I can't wrap my brain around it. Funny how the fact that he's a cold-blooded mass murderer is acceptable but the drinking, smoking, etc., is against his religion. If you can overlook all the errors, I'm sure its a good read.

Hi, this is a note from the author. This a selection of the reviews from amazon.co.uk

Conrad Jones, Biography.

Conrad Jones is a 42 year old Author from the Welsh port of Holyhead, who lives in Warrington, Cheshire. He worked in senior management at McDonalds Restaurants Ltd from 1989-2002. On march 23rd 1993 he was managing the Restaurant in Warrington`s Bridge St when two Irish Republican Army bombs exploded directly outside the store, resulting in the death of two young boys and many casualties. Along with hundreds of other people there that day Conrad was deeply affected by the attack, which led to a long term interest in the motivation and mind set of terrorists.
Later years turned his focus to tensions in the Middle East and beyond. The rise of Islamic Extremism and its determined Mujahideen fighters is the focus of Soft Target, which was published and is selling well despite not being represented. The title and the Author have been featured in six regional newspapers, and three BBC Radio interviews.
The Soft Target novels are based around a character called John Tankersley, nicknamed Tank. He is the lead agent of the Terrorist Task Force, which is an elite Special Forces group tasked with wiping out terrorist attacks internationally. One novel is selling but is still the property of the Author. Soft Target Two is now published, and three has been completed, and is in the publication process. Conrad feels that `Tank` has any number of potential plots left, and will have completed volume four before Christmas,2008.
In June 2007 the author and his wife, Ruth were enjoying an extended holiday in Florida, USA. The trip was interrupted by the shocking news from home that their home had been burgled, and everything had been stolen. At that time the author was self employed, and his work van, tools, and essential machinery had been lost to the thieves. The UK at the time was suffering from severe flooding in York, and the South West, making insurance claims extraordinarily difficult. Rendered unemployed Conrad and his wife took the gamble of a life time, and agreed that the author should start writing `Soft Target` while they were still abroad. Bearing in mind that the author had never written so much as a letter for years, by the time they arrived back in the UK eight chapters had been penned by hand. Twelve months later three novels have been completed, and a fourth is in progress. More to the point its readers are enjoying the novel !!

Good starter for five, 30 April 2008
By Michael Watson "skirrow22" (Elland, England) - See all my reviews

A new author, a current terror topic and a fast-moving storyline. As a debut novel, the author has managed to create a scenario, mainly set in the UK which conveys to the reader just how easy it would appear to be to put in place a plan to hit 'soft targets' to cause maximum injury to innocent people.

That his team of anti-terrorist members deals with these so-called 'freedom fighters' in as harsh a way as possible seems a reasonable and appropriate response! The body count is enormous and perhaps glossed over a little too easily but, nontheless, I enjoyed the book and hope that the author can develop his characters as we progress through the next stories he has lined up for us.

I believe there are to be three books featuring this elite team. I look forward to the next.

As a practicing Muslim I`m sometimes deeply ofended by the number of books being written about radical Islam. This book however is brilliantly balanced, it tackles the root causes of terrorism, the formation of the Middle East, the partition of Pakistan and the trouble that has raged ever since. The book is packed with well researched information that is weaved into a very addictive story line. Well done Mr Jones, I was most pleasantly surprised. I bought this book by chance based on the subject, it is a well researched well written book, and a very good read. It is the only book I have read that I can remember recently that can really be described as a" page turner". I would recommend it to anyone, and am very much looking forward to the next part of the story. Great debut novel, 2 April 2008

I think was a good debut novel from a new author. I found each chapter left you wanting to know what happens next which a skill in itself. The main character Tank has plenty of milage in him I think. It reminded me of a Jack Reacher type character, if you like that type of story. The manuscript was a little rough but the book quality is excellent. I have seen this in Waterstones and Borders books for sale at £13.99 which is pricey for a paperback, but thats not a problem for us Amazon shoppers. Great read 10/10 debut. There are still some first edition unedited proofs around, which explain the review given re the manuscript. The new edited edition is released, however there may still be some in warehouses out there!! Please look at the UK web site for reviews, amazon.co.uk . Thank you for looking at my title, it`s the first of a series of at least four novels. I hope you enjoy the story.
I have recently uploaded some of the press coverage that the book has recieved in the UK, which has been very encouraging. The title has been nominated for a couple of awards, and a film script competition too on a TV show over here. Most readers think it would be a good action film, it wasn`t top of mind as I was writing it but I have to agree now!!!
Part two is available right now, called,
`Soft Target II`,`Tank` and the third part of the trilogy about September time. Thanks again for the interest in my novel, Let me know if you like the story.........Conrad

PS If anyone does get the crappy manuscripts, and it has spoiled the read I will send you a signed edited version in return for your first editions....just leave me a message I check them every day or so, thank you, and take care.

I bought this book along side two Lee Child books in an offer from Amazon. If you are thriller fans then I cant recommend this new author enough, as you can tell from my reviews, I like to point out new talent to people who enjoy the same genre. It is a real page turner in every sense of the word, I couldnt put it down. The author has crammed oodles of recent historical events into the fiction making the story line even more hard hitting. You feel excited by the story and educated by it at the same time. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
The plot is based around a terrorist task force, made up of American Delta force and British SAS units. They are created to track down an Islamic Extremist leader called Yasser Ahmed (a bin-Laden type)who sets out on a Soft Target campaign of suicide bombings which attack famous tourist destinations across the US and UK, killing hundreds of innocents. The story starts when bombers walk into downtown Disney restaurants dressed as characters, then Vegas, the Grand Canyon and Pier 39 at San Francisco are all attacked.
The taskforce leader is an ex-SAS member called John Tankersley, AKA, `Tank` as he is called by his colleagues. Tank is a new frighteningly addictive character, tougher than Jack Reacher and smarter than Harry Bosch, supported by a high-tec unit of the worlds best elite forces.
The plot is an absolute rollercoaster of a story, every chapter ends on a cliff hanger forcing you to read on. The author has a talent to make you desperate to know what happens next. There are more twist and turns in the book than you can shake a stick at. It is very rare that a book can be called a true `page turner` but this absolutely one in that exclusive book club. You will be shocked and disturbed by this story, it makes you almost paranoid, but the characters are deep and well researched, every terrorist has a detailed life history which describes why they chose to become soldiers of Islam, nothing is taken for granted......give it a read, you will not put it down until it is finished, and when you do you will want to but part two straight away!!

The plot of TARGET ACQUIRED sounded interesting--the reason I bought the book--and another author probably could've pulled it off. It is about the testing of 'Tiger', a revolutionary UAV(Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) for the government under The Patriot Act. The technical team has a traitor in its midst, and you can guess the rest. Acronyms abound in this book to the point of distraction. There's so many that I doubt this entire page would hold them all. Makes for boring reading. In addition, the prose is choppy at best, the characters paper cut-outs, and the conclusion was rushed. I wanted to quit halfway through, but decided to finish it, thinking I would find a reason why the book was published. A real stinker here.

Narlock's first book, aptly entitled "50-D", and now sadly out of print, was a cult classic amongst the telecommunications techies of the 1980s. In "Target Acquired" Narlock branches out in a new direction entirely. His readers benefit as "50-D" was considered a bit of a sleeper by the USOAR cognoscenti.

I thought the book was well written and suspenseful. There was good character development and the subject matter was something I've never seen before. It's a little too close to possible and that was somewhat disconcerting. I've never heard about this type of weapon system before. An interesting subject, especially in this day and age.

Another try at using Kaplan & Norton's great two masterpiece books. If you love to buy every book in the field get this book. Otherwise, do not waste your money because there are newer and more updated books. The Balanced Scorecard is already in its third generation, using Systems Modeling with I THINK or POWERSIM, and this book is already past its glory.

Knowledge-worker productivity is the biggest of the 21st century management challenges. Companies can do a great deal to improve it. This book exemplifies a key element: the measurement of non financial drivers of financial success. The 'Initiatives Grid' (Table 8-1) provides guidelines how to review strategic performance measures with the board of directors or parent organization. The process of cascading the measures throughout the organization and embedding the measures into the leadership process is key. The text gives a clear view of the bricks that put together a balanced set of performance indicators, that any organization could use to focus executive teams and human resources on a unified strategy. Companies may benefit from strict use of this system, readers will gain much from applying the insights without complete implementation.

I've been consulting for 30+ years and find the concepts in this book refreshing. In fact, the problem with most scorecards is that they miss the linkages that Dr. Schiemann and Dr. Lingle address in this book: People, Culture and Discipline.

I especially like the detailed evalution of important linkages to make measurements work. These authors write clearly and succinctly with real case studies, not theory.

Use this book as a reference guide of what to do when Norton and Kaplan fails.

The original Dalek story

The second televised Doctor Who story introduced one of the most important elements in the show's history: the Daleks, the most constant opponents of the Doctor through his many lives. So popular were they that this novel was published in 1964. Written by the show's original script editor, it is not a straight adaptation of the show it is based on.

Mr Whitaker starts the novel with a variant version of the first episode of the series, although Ian is not a teacher and Susan has a different surname (English instead of Foreman). This version is rather more atmospheric than the equivalent in the novelisation of An Unearthly Child. In fact, writing the book in the first person (narrated by Ian) is an excellent device in this book.

Moving on into the story proper, it is again not a simple adaptation of the televised story. While fairly faithful, some of the deviations (like the glass Dalek) add interest in a way that the show could not actually portray at the time. The Thal characters are fairly well outlined (given that they are quite flat in the original serial), and the descriptions of the planetary environs is also good.

Way back when, Doctor Who books included line drawing illustrations. I've never been impressed with these, but those in this book are among the best, and obviously based on stills from the original.

An excellent, if inaccurate, adaptation of an important story. A pity they aren't all this good.

This is where it all started....

_This is where it all starts, on a foggy night out on Barnes Common. I really identified with the opening of this story- a teacher with a science degree driving back from a failed interview for a research scientist position finds himself swept into adventure beyond his wildest dreams. Turns out that not getting that job was the best thing that ever happened to Ian Chesterton.

_It is fitting that this very first Doctor Who novelization is the one that links his fate with that of the Daleks and their home world of Skaros. It is the Doctor's instinctual opposition to these inconceivably evil obominations that immediately defines him for what he is. This is THE DOCTOR, the cosmic foe of all that is monstrous and evil. This is the Time Lord who saw the suffering and injustice in the universe and refused to remain a detached, objective observer like the rest of his kind.

_And so the good doctor, his grand daughter Susan, her tutor Barbara Wright, and Ian Chesterton start on their adventures.

_It seems to me that the Doctor need not have dispaired that there was no force in the universe looking out for the weak, the helpless, the innocent. Afterall, SOMETHING seems to guide that unsteerable old Mk.40 TARDIS to exactly where and when it is needed most....

This is the first doctor who book featuring the daleks. It suffers from the fact that it was written before the daleks as a race were fully developed so it suffers from some severe inconsistincies. Having said that there is some good imagary like the petrified forest (being a product of the kaled/thal war). It is also interesting just to see where these well known creatures began.

I love training books, but I love them more if they tell me step-by-step how to train a behavior! Even better, how to then expand on a basic behavior to make it more complex.

There's instructions on teaching behaviors that will help in canine sports - agility, flyball (paw touch on a contact similar to agility for learning a box turn) and freestyle.

There's also fun stuff like teaching your dog to skateboard, hug, crawl, bow, kiss, etc. I'm also curious to try out the loose leash walking by targeting the leash - not for competition behavior, but nice for companion walking.

We had an awesome visit at CSDogBookReview (YahooGroups) in April 2006 with Mandy and Cheryl - check out our archives!

I made the mistake of thinking this book would contain some advanced training techniques. Boy was I wrong...
I was very disappointed. It would be a good book for beginners just getting into training more than basic obedience. But for experienced dog trainers, its a snooze, and some of the techniques I actually disagree with. Not to mention the fact that their whole system depends upon a dog who is highly food motivated. Consider carefully before purchasing.

This book has a lot of valuable information for the beginningfarmer, but don't let the price fool you! The type is *very* small, the graphics lousy and many of the pages are only photocopied (badly) and un-readable. I would recommend you think twice before sinking $ into this book...

I'm mainly a bird hunter and shoot clays to improve my chukar odds. This book covers each topic of interest to shotgun shooting in a concise, direct, and insightful style. It helped me in my first reading, but will be most useful as a reference to brush up on fundamentals and to diagnose shooting problems. I'd recommend it as a text for new shooters and as a reference for those who do not regularly break 98 out of 100 clays - that 1% don't need any help!!

Very impressive book. As a new shotgunner, I have bought a lot of shotgunning books that go over and over the same ground. This one is different! I needed to find POSITIVE methods to practice to IMPROVE, rather than a billion small "don't do this" recommendations, and I got some very interesting recommendations here. There are a few pages in this book which to me by themselves completely repaid its cost. See "NPA" and "follow the chip" for two examples. I recommend that you "Google" B. J. McDaniel if you are still in doubt about this purchase.

The authors use rationale to explain technique, problems, and fixes. It's apparent early in the reading that their background is in instructing and coaching. It is not a "my way or the highway" approach. What they pass along can be applied to most any individual's style of shooting. Perhaps most amazing is that they cover most, if not all, of the clay shooting disciplines. Well done gentlemen.
